CALVIN M. FOX

COLUMBIA -- Calvin Morris "Red" Fox, of 2270 Haywood Choice Road, Wedgefield, died Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

He was born Dec. 28, 1938, in Newport News, Va. He was the son of the late Junious R. and Ollie C. Banks Fox. He was educated in the public schools of Newport News. He was an automotive technician. He enjoyed motorcycle riding and was a member of the Black Falcon Motor Club, Bronx, N.Y.

Survivors include his wife, Ida Coice Fox of the home; two daughters, Angela Fox of Newport News and Janice Perry of Hampton, Va.; four sisters, Aretha Banks, Carrie Blair, Nancy Nicholson and Dorothy Evans, all of Newport News; three brothers, Henry of Newport News, Robert Fox of Hampton and Charles Fox of New York City; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Jean Robinson; and a grandson, Robert Jamel.

Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today in the chapel of Community Home with the Rev. Robert Cleckly officiating.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.

ETHEL JOHNSON

Ethel Johnson, of 4855 Mt. Sinai Church Road, died Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

The family is receiving friends at the home.

Funeral plans will be announced by Community Funeral Home of Sumter.

STELLA C. MAINES

Stella Carter Maines, 85, widow of Frank Maines, died Sunday, May 23, 2004, at her home.

Born in Glassboro, N.J., she was a daughter of the late Albert E. Carter and the late Reba Smith Key. Mrs. Maines was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church. She was an honorary member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She was a retired nurse.

Surviving are two daughters, Muriel Waninger and her husband, George A., of Sumter and Frances Tozer of Maple Shade, N.J.; a brother, Nelson Carter of Pennsville, N.J.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Andrew Basham officiating.

Buiral will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Laurete Phi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of her daughter, 2650 McCrays Mill Road.

Memorials may be made to Tri-County Hospice, 2650-B Hardee Cove, Sumter, SC 29150 or to cancer research.

DAVID B. REMBERT

MANNING -- David Brent Rembert, 20, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at his home.

Born Nov. 16, 1983, in Sumter, he was a son of Henry D. Rembert and Glenda Wells Hawkins. Mr. Rembert attended Trinity United Methodist Church as a youth. He was a 2002 graduate of Laurence Manning Academy and was presently attending Newberry College, where he was a member of the baseball team. He was a former member of the P-15's baseball team for two years.

Surviving are his father of Sumter; his mother and stepfather, Donnie Hawkins, of Manning; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph R. Wells of Pinewood; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Julian Rembert of Oswego; two brothers, Henry D. Rembert III of Sumter and Joseph Ryan Rembert of Charleston; a stepbrother, Gregory J. Hawkins of Pinewood; a stepsister, Krystal E. Hawkins of Sumter; two aunts, Brenda W. Simpson and her husband, Radi, of Sumter and Dawn W. Clough and her husband, Steve, of Pinewood; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by a grandmother, Carolyn Bickler.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Bridges and the Rev. Dick Broomall officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jason Brunson, Jason Shumpert, Rhett Beard, Matt Cody, Harvin Hall, Mark Furse, Chris Skinner and Tommy Whampler.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Newberry College baseball team.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Laurence Manning Baseball Program or to the Newberry College Baseball Program.

ALBERT GORDON Sr.

Albert Gordon Sr. died Friday, May 21, 2004, at his home in Sumter.

He was born Oct. 24, 1948, in Sumter to the late Mr. Steady Gordon and Katie McFadden Gordon. He was a member of Mulberry Baptist Church, where he sang on the adult choir. Albert was educated in Sumter County schools and was employed as a supervisor of production with Korn Industries.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mattie Mae Perry and Ethel Lee Woods; and one brother, Steady Edward Gordon.

Surviving are his wife, Martha Gordon of the home; eight children, Velvery (Charles) McCoy, Marcell Bradley, Albert Gordon Jr., all of Sumter, Jerome (Maria) White of Charlotte, N.C., Reginald Maurice Gordon and Marvin Dwayne Gordon of Sumter, Sheena Shaw of Cocoa, Fla., and Walisha Sharlene Gordon of Sumter; eight grandchildren; and four brothers, Manning (Janie Mae) Gordon, Ervin (Delphine) Gordon, William (Katrina) Gordon and Jasper Gordon, all of Sumter.

Services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Mulberry Baptist Church, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Otis S. Scott Sr., pastor, assisted by the Rev. Donald Amis, the Rev. Dr. Charles H. Davis, Elder Carnell Dukes and evangelist Betty Dukes.

The remains will be placed in the church from 3:30 p.m. until the hour of service.

Burial will be in the Mulberry Church cemetery, Sumter.

The funeral procession will leave at 3:30 p.m. from the residence of 1430 Woods St., Sumter.

The family will receive friends at 1430 Woods St., Sumter.

ANABEL C. BROWN

BISHOPVILLE -- Anabel Cogburn Brown, 96, went to be with our Heavenly Father on Tuesday, May 25, 2004.

Born in Orangeburg County, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin Still Cogburn and the late Annie Miller Cogburn. She was the widow of E.H. "Brownie" Brown Sr., who was the superintendent over the Lee County S.C. Highway Department. Mrs. Brown resided in Bishopville for the last 75 years and spent her early years in Bamberg. She was a graduate of Columbia High School and attended Winthrop College. She was a buyer for Belk's Department Store for many years before she retired and became the Lee County librarian. Mrs. Brown was a member of First Baptist Church of Bishopville, where she was superintendent of the Sunday school classes and taught Sunday school. In her later years, she became a member of the adult ladies Sunday school class. She was an active member of the community, serving as secretary of the Bishopville Rescue Squad, a member of the Pilot Club, the Iris Garden Club, and several bridge clubs.

Survivors include two sons, Dr. E.H. "Buster" Brown Jr. and his wife, Alice Wells Brown, of Columbia and Retired Lt. Col. Ben Brown and his wife, Evelyn Vickers Brown, of Surfside Beach; her loving sister, Lois Cogburn Jones of Pinewood; grandchildren, Ruth Ann Ingham, Mary Elizabeth "Beth" Meyer, E.H. "Buck" Brown III, Jennie Cooke, Anna Petitgout, Benjamin "Bo" Brown Jr., and Laura Haselden; and she was blessed with 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Eunice Wingate, Angus Cogburn, Sudie Hewett, Sara Gunn, Thomas Cogburn, George Cogburn and Elmer Cogburn.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in First Baptist Church, Bishopville, with the Rev. Dale Warren officiating.

Burial will be in the Piedmont cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 144, Bishopville, SC 29010.

LEOLA CHOICE

Leola Choice, 89, widow of Joseph Choice, died May 26, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 23, 1914, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Emmaline Howard Croom.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 4870 Cane Savannah Road, Wedgefield 29168.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

BRYANT J. DOZIER

SUMMERTON -- Bryant J. Dozier, 19, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at his residence.

Born May 22, 1985, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Janice Dozier.

The family will receive friends at the home, 1729 Urbana Road, Summerton.

Services will be announced by King Funeral Home of Summerton.

DARLINE CHAMBERS

IRVINGTON, N.J. -- Darline Chambers, wife of Robert Lee Chambers, died May 25, 2004, in Irvington, N.J.

The family will receive friends at 1698 Green Lane, Bishopville.

Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

JAMES E. HERRINGTON

WAYNESBORO, Ga. -- Mr. James E. "Jimmy" or "Pete" Herrington, 65, died Thursday, May 6, 2004, at the Burke Medical Center.

Jimmy was a lifelong resident of Burke County. He was a member of the American Registry of X-Ray Technicians, Society of X-Ray Technicians and past president of the Augusta Society of X-Ray Technicians. He retired after 29 years of service at Thermal King, Louisville, Ga. He was an X-ray technician at University Hospital, Augusta and chief X-ray technician at Fairview Hospital in Dublin, Ga. He served with the Georgia National Guard. He graduated from Waynesboro High School, attended Georgia Southern University and graduated from the University Hospital School of Radiology. He was a Methodist and a member of the First United Methodist Church, Waynesboro, former member of Pastor Parrish Committee, member of Scrapp Gresham Sunday School Class and taught sixth grade Sunday school class.

Mr. Herrington was preceded in death by his parents, Henry C. and Clyde Hankerson Herrington; sister, Jewell H. Drew; and brother, Robert C. Herrington.

He is survived by his wife, Faye Flakes Herrington of Waynesboro; three sons, Britt Herrington of Waynesboro, Jeffery Herrington of Statesboro and Michael Herrington of Myrtle Beach; and his cocker spaniel, Heidi Herrington of Waynesboro. Also survived by a brother, Carroll (Khaki) Herrington of Statesboro; sister, Rose Herrington Jones of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today at the First United Methodist Church, Waynesboro, with Dr. David Carter and the Rev. Henry Erwin officiating. Interment will follow at Burke Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Bolton, David Drew, Russell Flakes, Gary Flakes, Shawn Black, Seebie Kirkland, Bill Tinley and Tim Flakes.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Scrapp Gresham Sunday school class, Herbert Mobley, Preston Purvis, John Bearden and Billy Joe Johnson.

Memorials may be made to one's favorite charity in his honor.
