Leonora Cox Epting
December 9, 2006

Leonora Louise Cox Epting, 87, formerly of Newberry, died, December 9, 2006 at Bishop Gadsden Nursing Home in Charleston. She has been a resident of Charleston, SC for the past seven years.
She was born on December 1, 1919 in Alleghany County, Virginia, a daughter of the late Hubert E. and Mary Emma Dressler Cox. She had a younger brother George Edwin Cox, (now deceased) and sister Nancy McCormick Cox. Their childhoods were spent on the dairy farm near Covington, Virginia, but as teenagers, they moved with their parents to town and lived on Prospect Street.
After high school, Leonora went to National Business College in Roanoke, Virginia. While she lived there, she met her future husband Hugh M. Epting at a wedding. Because Hugh lived in South Carolina, they did most of their courting the next year through the U.S. Mail. After they married in 1940, Leonora moved to Hugh’s family farm on Bush River Road near Newberry, SC where she began a small egg business. She also taught piano lessons.
She had a special talent for music and, at one time, played the organ at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Newberry where the family attended services.
She was a good mother and taught her children, Anne and Jean, how to do many things around the house. She also made sure they got a good education, had piano and art lessons, and sang in the youth choir at church.
She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, the George B. Cromer Sunday School Class, WELCA, and the Garden Study Club.
Even though her health has failed her in the past few years, she has still enjoyed hearing the stories about her grandchildren Chris and Kirk Blackmon and the funny stories we all told her about the beloved family pets. She always laughed the most at the things they did.
She had a fiery spirit and a good sense of humor, and she will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her two daughters Dr. Anne C. Epting (Bill Capehart )of Charleston, SC and Jean E. Blackmon (Fred Blackmon) of Roswell, GA; her grandchildren and their wives are Chris and Maura Blackmon of Athens, GA. and Kirk and Heather Blackmon of Marietta, GA; a survived by a sister Nancy Kruszyna of Covington VA; three sisters-in law, Dr. Sue Cox of Chattanooga, TN (widow of Dr. George E. Cox, deceased); Lula Mae Epting of Charleston, SC, and Marguerite Amick of Columbia, SC; and many nieces and nephews in GA, S C, VA, and CA..
Her funeral services were conducted at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer at 3:00 p.m. Sunday December 10, 2006 by the Rev. Steve Counts. Private interment services were in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to Boys Farm, PO Box 713, Newberry SC 29108. or to a charity of your choice.
