PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Martha Capers Scott, widow of Kise Ever Scott, died May 27, 2004, at Frankfort Medical Center.

Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late James Capers Sr. and Martha Parker Capers and sister of Rosa Clea of Sumter.

G. Choice Funeral Chapel, 2530 N. Broad St., Philadelphia, Pa., is in charge of these arrangements.

ROSEZELL G. PORTER

Rosezell Gibson Porter, 73, widow of Joseph Porter, died May 27, 2004, at Mariner Health of Sumter East.

Born Nov. 2, 1930, in Richland County, she was a daughter of Joe Gibson and Bertha Mae Simon Gibson.

The family will receive friends at the home, 104 W. Moore St., Sumter.

Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

CHARLIE EDWARDS

REMBERT -- Charlie Edwards, 82, of 7245 Youngs St., Rembert, died Saturday, May 29. Plans will be announced by Collins Funeral Home.

BISHOPVILLE -- James Pearson died Wednesday, May 26, 2004, in Palm Beach, Fla.

The family will receive friends at the home of his brother, Reese Pearson, at 520 Third St., Bishopville.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Boatwright Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

AIKEN -- Terry A. Barnfield, husband of Elease Spann- Barnfield, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, at Aiken Regional Medical Center.

Services are incomplete and will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc.

MATTIE MAE TAYLOR PITTMAN

HEMINGWAY -- Mattie Mae Taylor Pittman, 87, widow of Eugene Pittman, died Thursday, May 27.

She was born in Georgetown County the daughter of the late Mose and Janie Eaddy Taylor.

She was a member of Jerusalem AME Church, where she served as president of Stewardess Board No. 2, a member of the pastor aide, in the senior and gospel choir, was an usher and member of the Chavis Chapter 328 OES, the Home Charity Lodge and Jerusalem Tent 206.

Survivors include three sons, Lewood (Margaret) Pittman of Georgetown, James A. (Marva) Pittman of Hemingway and Robert (Ollie) Pittman of Camden, N.J.; four daughters, the Rev. Harriett P. Massingill and Wihelmenia Pressley of Hemingway, the Rev. Bernetha (Jerry) Wynn of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Lucretia Hughes of Sliver Spring, Md.; three brothers, Lorris Taylor of Hemingway, Timothy Green of Johnsonville and Joseph Green of Hemingway; one sister, Leatha Mae Taylor of Brooklyn; 24 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be today at 1 p.m. from Jerusalem AME Church on County Line Road, Hemingway.

The Rev. James Frost will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The funeral procession will leave at 12:30 p.m. from the home of her daughter, the Rev. Harriett P. Massingill, 17 Magnolia St., Hemingway.

Green's Funeral Home of Lake City is in charge of arrangements.

RACHEL A. BALLARD

BALTIMORE -- Rachel A. Ballard, 89, widow of Henry Ballard, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at Manor Care in Baltimore.

She was born March 25, 1915, in the Camp Bob Cooper section of Clarendon County the daughter of the late James Dukes and Julia Hammett.

She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and joined Mt. Zion AME Church in her youth. After moving to Baltimore, she joined John Wesly Methodist Church, serving as an usher. Later, she moved her membership to Lewin United Methodist Church, serving on the senior usher board and a member of the Methodist women. She was a retired employee of London Fog.

Survivors include one son, Eugene Ballard; one daughter Irene Dingle; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.

The remains will be placed in the church at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Funeral services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Historical Mt. Zion AME Church, 6547 Rickenbaker Road, Summerton. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The Rev. Dr. Willie J. Heggins II, pastor, will officiate.

Pallbearers and floral bearers will be friends of the family.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

W.L. WATTS

Warren "W.L." Watts, 60, husband of Karen Runberg Watts, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, in North Carolina.

Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late William "Rufus" Watts Sr. and the late Beula Marrie Canty.

He was a member of Memorial Chapel Church at Ashwood and was retired from the U.S. Air Force as NCO Club manager.

Survivors besides his wife include two daughters, Ann Marie Watts and Vicki Watts Morris and her husband, Guy, all of Bishopville; two brothers, Bill Watts and his wife, Mary, of Florence, Steve Watts and his wife, Carol Ann, of Bishopville; three sisters, Rutha Lee Dukes and her husband, J.S., Hazel Rhiner and her husband, Gene, and Ann White and her husband, Jimmy, all of Sumter; a grandson, Brandon Watts of Bishopville; a granddaughter, Emma Morris of Bishopville; a sister-in-law, Joyce Watts of Sumter and a brother-in-law, Jim Winfield of Sumter.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Marion Watts, and a sister, Aurelia May Winfield.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Glass officiating.

Burial will be in Piedmont cemetery with full military honors.

Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Wheeler, Bill Gusman, Chuck Smith, Alvy Ridgeway, Wayne Shiver, and Jack Wilkes.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home and other times at 860 Woodrow Road, Bishopville.

ISACC TOMONEY

SUMMERTON -- Graveside services will be held 10:30 a.m. today for the late Isacc Tomoney at Spring Grove cemetery in Rimini.

He died Friday, May 27, 2004, at his residence. Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of Joe Simon and the late Annie (Mitt) Tomoney Greene.

He attended the public schools of Clarendon County.

He is survived by his father, Joe Simon of Panolo; two brothers, Thomas and Harry Greene of New York.

The procession will be leaving at 10 a.m. from King Funeral Home, 3 Larry King Jr. Highway.

King Funeral Home of Summerton is in charge of arrangements.

CHARLES GERALD BRUNSON

Charles Gerald "Jerry" Brunson, 64, husband of Patricia Marsh Brunson, died Monday, May 31, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Paxville, he was a son of the late James R. Brunson and the late Dena Geddings Brunson.

Mr. Brunson was a member of Jefferson Road Freewill Baptist Church. He was a retired construction superintendent with ECB Construction Co. with 35 years of service and most recently was employed by Hunter Builders for 10 years.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; a daughter, Teresa Denise Brunson of Sumter; two brothers, James R. Brunson of Sumter and William C. Ardis of Charleston; two sisters, Beatrice Broadway of Jefferson and Katherine Mayer of Pittsburgh.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Ashwood Baptist Church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Matt Nuckels, Dean Pack, Charles Pate, Joe Brogdon, Pete Bell, John Alton Privette, McLeod Welch, and Ernie Broadway.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of his daughter, 791 Lang Jennings Drive.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

Grace Dellany Derrenbacher Spigner, 71, wife of Harry Lamar Spigner Sr., died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at her home.

Services will be announced by Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter.

MARY M. McFADDEN

Mary Magdalene McFadden, 82, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born Jan. 28, 1922, in Dalzell, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Elizabeth Smith Scriven. She received her formal education in the Ebenezer school system. At an early age, she connected herself to Four Bridges Baptist Church. After living in New York for several years and returning to Sumter, she joined the Trinity Baptist Church under the guidance of Dr. L.W. Walker Sr. Then in 1988, she became a charter member of New Fellowship Baptist Church with Dr. Walker as pastor.

Mrs. McFadden served faithfully on the senior choir, the Missionary Society and Pastor's Aide, as long as her health permitted. Serving actively in the community, she was a dedicated volunteer for the Memorial Senior Citizen's Center on Sumter Street, a member to the Twelve Tribes of Israel and a member of the Broad Street Burial League.

Survivors include a sister, Ruthie Lee Capers of Union, N.J.; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul Pentecostal Holiness Church, 129 1/2 W. Moore St., where Minister Shirley Holiday is the pastor. The Rev. Hazel Charles, pastor of New Fellowship Baptist Church, will officiate, assisted by Elder Barrington Pierson, the Rev. Dr. Lewis W. Walker Sr., and the Rev. J.C. Walker.

Interment will follow in Hillside Memorial cemetery.

Scriven Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.
