LESLIE J. PHILLIPS Sr.

KINGSTREE -- Leslie J. Phillips Sr., 97, died Monday, May 31, in Kingstree.

Mr. Phillips was born Dec. 22, 1906, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Willie T. and Sally Coker Phillips. He was a retired farmer and salesman and a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church.

Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Kathryn McClary Phillips.

Survivors include his daughters, Barbara P. Chandler of Greeleyville and Hazel P. Bradham of Manning; sons, Jervais Phillips of Cookeville, Tenn., Julian Phillips of Florence, Robert Phillips of Andrews and Reuben Phillips of Kingstree; sisters, Virginia Phillips of Florence, Naomi Ward and Ruth Grayson, both of Kingstree; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today in the Cedar Grove Baptist Church, conducted by his grandson, the Rev. Wil Bradham. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Cedar Grove Baptist Church.

MATILDA EPHRON

Mrs. Matilda Ephron, of 18 Shuler, Sumter, died June 1, 2004, at her home.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home.

Funeral plans are incomplete and will be announced by Community Funeral Home of Sumter.

MAGGIE J. POLLARD

Maggie J. Pollard, 56, died June 3, 2004.

Born Sept. 27, 1947, in Sumter, she was a daughter of Lillie Mae Singleton Johnson Robinson and the late James Johnson and stepdaughter of the late James Robinson.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 385 Deschamps Road, Sumter 29154.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

DELLANEY SPIGNER

Grace Dellaney Derrenbacher Spigner, 71, wife of Harry Lamar Spigner Sr., died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at her home.

Born in Lexington County, she was a daughter of the late William Perry Derrenbacher Sr. and the late Merna Grace Lucas Derrenbacher. She was a member of Northside Memorial Baptist Church. She served in church music for more than 30 years, 14 of which were at Northside Memorial Baptist Church.

Survivors besides her husband include three sons, Harry Lamar Spigner Jr. and his wife, Joanne, Michael Perry Spigner and his wife, Colleen, and Drue Everette Spigner and his wife, Dee Dee, all of Sumter; a daughter, Julia Caroline Kirmse and her husband, Kevin, of Mesa, Ariz.; a sister, Susan Perry Branham of Lexington; a brother, William Perry Derrenbacher Jr. of Chapel Hill, N.C.; four grandchildren, Caroline Ropp and her husband, John, of Hartsville, Melissa Dawkins and her husband, Kevin, Jeffrey Spigner and his wife, Tracy, and Sarah-Kathryn Spigner, all of Sumter; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Michelle Dellaney Spigner.

Funeral services will be held at noon today in Northside Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Holley and the Rev. Mark Barnette officiating.

Graveside services will be in the Beulah Methodist Church cemetery in Sandy Run at 3 p.m. today.

Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Lamar Spigner, Dr. John Ropp III, Kevin Dawkins, Matt Derrenbacher, Sam Hawthorne and Ned Davis.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ronnie Atkinson, Robert Blackmon, George Corbett, Benny Hodge, Melvin Holloman, E.W. Lucas Jr., Larry McGee, Alvin Moore, Tommy Rogers, Henry Sievers, Daryle Skey and Carlisle White.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hank Spigner, 521 Godwin St.

Memorials may be made to the Northside Memorial Baptist Church Music Ministry, 1004 N. Main St., Sumter, SC 29150 or to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 1235 B. Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

ROBERT L. HOLLIDAY

Robert Lee Holliday, 45, died June 1, 2004, at Palmetto Richland Hospital, Columbia.

Born Feb. 12, 1959, in Summerton, he was a son of Dorothy Holliday Conyers and Richard Conyers.

The family will receive friends at 863 Griffin St.

Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

DEWEY S. RICKARD

Dewey S. Rickard, 77, husband of 57 years to Betty W. Rickard, died Friday, June 4, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Gilbert, he was a son of the late John T. Rickard and the late Ellie Taylor Rickard.

He was a charter member of Crosswell Baptist Church and a member of the Steadfast Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Claremont Masonic Lodge 64, a member of the York Rite, and a Shriner. Mr. Rickard was the owner and operator of Rickard's Countertops.

Survivors besides his wife include three sons, Pete Rickard and his wife, Ann, of Sumter, Billy Rickard and his wife, Emma Lee, of Sumter, and Mike Rickard and his wife, Diana, of Bear, Del.; a brother, C.W. Rickard and his wife, Ethel, of Sumter; two sisters, Mary Jo Harbin and her husband, Sam, of Canton, Ga., and Edith Baughknight of Gilbert; three grandchildren Robbie Rickard and his wife, Suzanne, Kevin Rickard and his wife, Angie, and Ashlee Rickard, all of Sumter; and four great-grandchildren, Zachary Rickard, Aubrey Rickard, Baileigh Rickard and Harrison Rickard.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in Crosswell Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Owens and the Rev. Charles Clanton officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Tommy Hawkins, Harvey Gainey, Tommy Hickson, Bobby Rabon, Bobby Beatson and Roy Powell.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Steadfast Sunday School Class of Crosswell Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Crosswell Baptist Church, 604 Mathis St., Sumter, SC 29150.

BARBARA ANN BRUNSON

SUMMERTON -- Barbara Ann Brunson, 40, died May 25, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born July 20, 1963, in Summerton, she was a stepdaughter of Morris Jones and daughter of the late Rosa Brunson Jones.

The family will receive friends at the home of her brother-in-law and sister, Anthony and Betty Webb, 1095 Session St., Summerton.

Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

LILA MAE M. BUTLER

MANNING -- Mrs. Lila Mae McKnight Butler, 54, wife of Mr. Tarlton Butler, died May 24, 2004, at her residence.

Born Aug. 7, 1949, in Bloomville County, she was a daughter of the late Mr. Benjamin McKnight Sr. and Mrs. Elouise McDonald McKnight. She was a member of St. John Baptist Church and was director of the youth choir and youth department. Lila was also a professional seamstress for a number of years.

Survivors include one brother, Isaac McKnight of Manning; two sisters, Hazel (Norman) Moorer of Manning and Louise (Lawrence) Bennett of Manning.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Johnson; and three brothers, Luther, Kinley and Benjamin Jr.

Funeral services will be held Friday at St. John Baptist Church, Bloomville community, with the Revs. Otis Wright, Dr. Coakley Richburg, Elder James Leach, Calvin Burgess, Effie Hilton and evangelist Elizabeth Richburg.

Burial will be in Mt. Chapel Baptist Church cemetery, Jordan community.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 919 Branchview Drive, Manning, SC 29102.

Fleming & DeLaine Funeral Home is in charge of services.

MARIE JOHNSON

BISHOPVILLE -- Marie Johnson died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center, Hartsville.

Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Claudie Davis and Wilhelmenia Bracey. She attended the public schools of Lee County. She was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church.

Surviving are three sons, Joe Johnson of Bishopville, Henry Johnson of Columbia and Johnny Johnson of Summerton; daughters, Lillie Mae (Joe) Spann of Philadelphia, Wilhelmenia (Malachi) Reames of Bishopville, Elouise Wright of Bishopville, Isabelle Durant of Bishopville, Mary Lee Holmes of Winston-Salem, Ruby Nell (Robert) Wilson of Bishopville, Jeannette (Jimmy) Miller of Bishopville and Sylvia (Robert) Cook of Bishopville; one brother, Sammie Bracey of Bishopville; three sisters, Rosa Mae (Elijah) Pringle of Sumter, Willie Belle Smith of Bishopville and Abby Lee Williams of Linden, N.J.; 46 grandchildren; and 43 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jerusalem Stuckey Baptist Church with the Rev. Julia Sanders officiating. Burial will be in Jerusalem Stuckey cemetery.

Square Deal Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of the arrangements.

ELIZA B. STUKES

Mrs. Eliza B. Stukes, the daughter of the late Flander and Bessie Sherod Blanding, was born July 23, 1912, in Clarendon County. Mrs. Stukes was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. She was an active member and participated on a number of organizations in Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church for more than 50 years. She was also a member of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Stukes was united in holy matrimony to the late Mr. Jeremiah Stukes.

On Thursday, May 20, 2004, Mrs. Stukes expired at 10:55 a.m., at Inova Hospital in Fairfax, Va., leaving happy. Mom was such a "good trooper." Now she is resting with her Father.

Leaving to remember her in her "good days and good cooking" are many friends and family. To miss her and cherish her precious memories are her four children, Charles Crosby, Frances Montinez, Amelia Waldon, and adopted daughter, Deidre Stukes. She leaves three sisters to remember her by, Emma B. Nelson, Nora Ayers and Catherine Ballard. To remember mom are her son-in-law, Thurston Waldon; daughter-in-law, Mary Crosby; and stepdaughter, Mattie and her husband, George. Mrs. Stukes leaves 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; cousins and dear friends.

Services for Mrs. Stukes will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, where the Rev. M.H. Newton is the pastor, with Pastor Larry Weston officiating, assisted by Minister Irene Anthony and Minister Sheila Murray. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the home of Mrs. Theresa White, 335 South St.

The funeral procession will leave the home of Mrs. Theresa White, 335 South St., at 12:30 p.m.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. is in charge of the arrangements.

ETHEL B. JOHNSON

LYNCHBURG -- Mrs. Ethel Boston Johnson, 88, of 4855 Mt. Sinai Church Road, a daughter of the late Mr. Peter Boston and Mrs. Emily Jackson Boston, was born in Sumter County, on Sept. 15, 1915. She was the widow of Mr. James H. Johnson Sr.

Mrs. Johnson received her education in the public schools of Sumter County and, at an early age, she joined the now defunct Mt. Olive AME Church in Pinewood.

On Saturday, May 22, 2004, Mrs. Johnson entered eternal rest at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

She is survived by one son, Herbert Johnson of Lynchburg; four sisters, Ponese Boston of Minneapolis, Lillian Boston and May Bell Boston, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Sadie Boston of Sumter; one grandson, Harry L. Fulwood of Houston, Texas; four granddaughters, Viola Cyraique and LaTonya Nelson, both of Baton Rouge, La., Sandra Graham of Schwienfurt, Germany, and Shonda Fulwood of Columbia; and four great-grandchildren, Shoncire', Madison, Marcus and Mikayla.

Mrs. Ethel Lee Boston Johnson was preceded in death by a daughter, Sadie Johnson-Fulwood; and a son, Mr. James H. Johnson Jr.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Community Funeral Home with the Rev. Leroy T. James officiating, with the Rev. Alfred Bradley assisting.

Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Florence National cemetery, Florence.

The family is receiving friends at the home.

Funeral procession will be leaving from the home at 1 p.m.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.
