LEOLA 'LO' CROOM CHOICE

Leola "Lo" Croom Choice, 89, wife of the late Joseph Choice, died May 26, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 23, 1914, in Sumter, the daughter of the late Frank and Emmaline Howard Croom.

At an early age, she accepted Christ as her savior and joined Wayman Chapel A.M.E. Church where she served on the Gospel Choir. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was supportive in teaching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren their elementary education. She often sang songs and expressed her spirituality aloud, giving no doubt to her true belief. She instilled value and spiritual growth in those who graced her presence. She enjoyed sewing, cooking and gardening, but most of all, she enjoyed sharing her mastered techniques with relatives, neighbors and friends.

Survivors include two daughters, Jannie C. Francis and Queen C. Mack, both of Wedgefield; three sisters, Amelia C. James of Yonkers, N.Y., Mary C. Hines of Washington, D.C., and Geneva C. Montgomery and her husband, Robert, of Irvington, N.J.; four brothers, Henry Croom and his wife, Inez, James Croom and Samuel Croom all of Sumter, and Willie Croom and his wife, Delia, of New York, N.Y.; 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Deloris Choice of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one son-in-law, Jervia Alston of Dalzell; two sisters-in-law, Bertha Croom of Sumter and Mary Croom of Harrisburg, Penn.; a special niece and caregiver Francis Norfleet; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by six children, Ruth Choice, Joseph Choice, Jr., Rosa Lee C. Bowen, Manning Choice, Ida Mae C. Alston and Charlie Choice.

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 31, at 1 p.m. at Wayman Chapel A.M.E. Church. The body will be placed in the church at noon Monday, May 31.

The Rev. Laddie N. Howard, pastor, will officiate.

Burial will follow in Wayman Chapel A.M.E. Church cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the residence of Queen C. Mack, 4870 Cane Savannah Road, Wedgefield.

Job's Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

PAULINE FRANCIS

Pauline Francis, 93, died May 26, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

She was born Aug. 15, 1910, in Sumter County the daughter of the late Walter and Florence Francis.

At an early age, she left the Congruity Church and community and stayed in Sumter in the home of the late Rev. and Mrs. James McKay where she attended kindergarten at Kendall Institute. Later, she joined an uncle in Augusta, Ga. She was an outstanding student at the boarding school, Haines Institute, until her junior year and the passing of her parents.

After their death, she returned to Sumter and enrolled in Kendall Institute under the pastoral leadership of the Rev. J.J. Foster. Upon graduation, she was desirous of further education and fulfilling her dream of attaining higher academic achievement and goals.

She then moved to Philadelphia and did private duty nursing. Later, she moved to New York, made application for the New York Board Examination of Nursing, passed and applied for a job at the City Hospital, Kings County, Brooklyn, N.Y., where she remained until World War II began. She then decided to serve her country and joined the Signal Corp for a three-year tour of duty.

Tiring from traveling from New York City to Long Island, she transferred and worked on Long Island at one of the leading nursing homes as supervisor of nurses until her retirement in 1980. Her love for youth and mankind continued to keep her out of retirement, which was shown through her long hours of service given at the Salem Memorial Center in Sumter and as a volunteer for Lemira Elementary School. She was a member of the Sumter Music Guild and attended Santee Senior Citizen Center regularly until her health began to fail.

Survivors include Ella Mae Berry and Dr. Barbara E. Foxworth of Philadelphia; a host of friends; the Congruity Church family and Santee Senior Citizens.

The remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday from Congruity Presbyterian Church (USA) in Sumter.

The Rev. Williams Jones Jr. will serve as the officiating eulogist.

Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park in Sumter.

Pallbearers will be family and friends. Floral bearers will be United Presbyterian Women.

The funeral procession will leave at 10:15 a.m. from 727 Winlee St., Sumter.

Family will recieve friends at the church following the services.

JESSIE ROSE HARVIN

HENDERSON, N.C. -- Jessie Rose Harvin of Henderson, N.C., died peacefully at her home Saturday, May 29.

Born Jessie Myrick Rose on Jan. 16, 1916, in Henderson, she was the second of four daughters of Paul H. Rose and Emma Myrick Rose. Her father founded Rose's Stores in 1915 and served as chairman of the corporation until his death in 1955.

Mrs. Harvin attended local schools in Henderson and also Gunston Hall in Washington, D.C., and Sweet Briar College and graduated from Martha Washington Seminary in Virginia. She adored her sisters, friends, family, traveling, boating on her father's yacht "Emrose" and filling her dance card.

She met Lucius Herman Harvin Jr. of Manning, S.C., in Henderson during his employment with Carolina Power nad Light Co. The two married March 8, 1938. Mr. Harvin subsequently joined Rose's Stores Inc. and served as president of the corporation. Mr. and Mrs. Harvin, more fondly remembered as Jessie and Lu, had five children, Lucius Herman Harvin III, Paul Rose Harvin, George Myrick Harvin, Jessie Rose Harvin and Emma Katherine Harvin.

Absolutely devoted to her husband and children, Mrs. Harvin shared with them her love of laughter, humor and charm. Her children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren all inherited Jessie's innate sense of family and appreciation of life.

Her family gatherings were delightfully noisy and confusing and exuded the warmth and love of home and hearth. Jessie loved the beach, sharing it with her family. Many vacations were spent at Virginia Beach until she and Mr. Harvin built a home on Figure Eight Island in Wilmington. With the hospitality of a true Southern gentlewoman, Jessie shared the beach she loved with her family and friends.

In addition to her successful role as wife and mother, Mrs. Harvin was active in family business and the community. She served as president of Emrose Corporation, a real estate development company, from 1937 to 1995 and as president of HHC Co. Inc., a real estate development company, from 1989 to 1997. Mrs. Harvin was chairman of the 1988 Capital Campaign of the Henderson Family YMCA, responsible for raising the funding for the community's first indoor pool and full-service recreational facility. She was a charter member of Contemporary Book Club, a lifelong member of the Henderson Garden Club, and a generous contributor to local organizations and charities. Mrs. Harvin was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Henderson and served on numerous women's circles. Mrs. Harvin and her husband, Lucius, were major contributors to the Harvin Clarendon County Library. Jessie will always be remembered for her strength of character, hospitality, charm and sense of humor.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Henderson with the Rev. Richard Brand.

Mrs. Harvin is survived by her children, Lucius Herman Harvin III and wife Rebecca Lane Harvin of Henderson, George Myrick Harvin and wife Agnes Thorne Harvin of Henderson, Rose Harvin Long and husband Dr. Walker Anderson Long of Chapel Hill and Emma Harvin Currigan of Wilmington; and by her grandchildren, Emma Katherine Louisa Currigan, Jessie Rose Madison Currigan, Paul Rose Harvin, Samuel Thorne Harvin and wife Julie Kilpatrick Harvin, Rebecca Harvin Wotz and husband Edwin Moore Woltz Sr., Virginia Harvin Pitler and husband Dr. Thomas Anthony Pitler, Lucius Herman Harvin IV and wife Ellen Olender Harvin; her step-grandchildren, Joshua Forrest Pescud Long and wife Boyd Anthony Long, Dr. Millie Dascomb Long Barritt and husband Dr. Alfred Sidney Barritt IV, Hadley Pirkko Long; and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters in law, Kitty Sue Harvin Bullock of Sumter and Margaret Barnwell Harvin of Columbia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lucius Herman Harvin Jr., by her son Paul Rose Harvin, and by her sisters Virginia Rose, Emma Rose Church and Alice Rose Vaughan.

Serving as active pallbearers will be her nephews: William J. Vaughan Jr., John T. Church Jr., John R. Harvin Jr., Joseph B. Harvin, L. Scott Harvin, Lucius Harvin Bullock, Dr. J. Paul Bullock and Alexander M. Bullock.

The family will receive friends at the home, 305 Beechwood Trail, immediately after the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, the elevator fund, P.O. Box 726 Young St., Henderson, NC 27536.

ELIJAH WASHINGTON

The relatives and friends of Mr. Elijah Washington are invited to attend his funeral services on Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Greater Goodwill AME Church, 2818 U.S. 17 North in Mount Pleasant.

Interment will be in the church cemetery.

His wife, Mrs. Corinthia Washington, survives Mr. Washington, along with five daughters, Ms. Gwendolyn Washington, Mrs. Cynthia Thompson and husband Frankie, Ms. Stephanie Washington, Mrs. Cassandra Huger and husband Nell, and Ms. Nicolette Witherspoon; five sons, Mr. George Washington, Mr. James Washington, Mr. Terry Washington, Mr. Stephen Washington and wife Toni, and Mr. Carlos Washington; three sisters, Mrs. Rosa Lee Coaxum; Ms. Alma Washington and Mrs. Leola Wright and husband Edward; four brothers, Mr. David Washington Jr., Mr. Isaac Washington, Mr. Abdul Hansan and wife Khalia, and Mr. Fred Washington; one brother-in-law, Mr. Isaac Wright; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Evelyn Washington. He is also survived by a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews and of other relatives' friends.

Viewing for Mr. Washington will be today in the Bryan McNeal Sr. Memorial Chapel, 4129 U.S. 17 North in Awendaw from 5 to 8:30 p.m. The family will be receiving friends at 913 Mathis St. in Sumter, the home of Mrs. Stephanie Washington Billie, and 1950 Jernigan Trail in Sumter, the home of Mrs. Cynthia D.A. Thompson.

MOISE HILTON Jr.

MANNING -- Moise Hilton Jr., 52, husband of Barbara Felder Hilton, died Monday, May 31, 2004, at his home in Manning.

He was born Dec. 28, 1951, in the Foreston section of Clarendon County and was the son of Ruth Murray Hilton and the late Moise Hilton Sr.

The family will receive friends at his residence, 3046 Durant Lane off U.S. 260 South, Manning. Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home of Manning.

MATTIE PLAYER HICKSON

Mattie Player Hickson died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

Services will be announced by Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory.

NELLE COMMANDER MILLING

Nelle Commander Milling, 95, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, at her home.

She was the widow of David Edgar Milling and the daughter of the late Joseph Palmer Commander and the late Leona Smith Commander.

She is survived by one sister, Connie Mathis Spencer. She was predeceased by three sisters, Louise Commander Bochman, Helen Commander Suggs, and Nancye Commander Dunn. She is survived by nieces and nephews John P. Britton of Sumter, Nancye B. Dibble of Columbia, Janis W. Moley of New York, William A. Dunn of Carrollton, Texas, Shepard N. Dunn of Vincennes, Ind., Joseph R. Dunn of Raleigh, N.C., Macy S. Terry of Sumter, and Sara Nelle Abernethy of Newton, N.C. She is also survived by 19 great-nieces and nephews and 12 great-great-nieces and nephews.

She attended the Sumter city schools and Furman University. She was associated with her father in the family business and, upon his death in 1937, she continued the management of the business until her semi-retirement in 1971.

Mrs. Milling was active in civic and community affairs. She was the last active charter member of The Pilot Club having joined the club in 1939. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Genealogical Society, the Gallery of Art, the Historical Society, the Senior Business Women's Club of the YMCA, a former member of the Sumter Garden Club, past director of the Merchants Association, the Chamber of Commerce, the USO, the YWCA, the Vocational Rehabilitation Board and was the first lady to serve on the planning commission. She was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Sumter.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Sumter cemetery with the Rev. Don Hansen officiating. Sufficient seating will be available at the graveside for family and friends.

Honorary pallbearers will be O.V. Player, J.T. "Bubba" James III, Roger Long, Frank Edwards, Jonathan Bryan, Walter McGee, James D. "Jimmy" McElveen, E.J. "Tim" Rowland, Louie L. Lucas, L.D. Rivers, Otis Geddings, Joe Dean, Henry Holland, John McCoy, Edward M. Harrison Jr., Jerry Conners, and Dr, Hugh Stoddard.

The family will receive friends following the graveside services at the Milling home, 21 Maplewood Drive.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 107 E. Liberty St., Sumter, SC 29150, or to the charity of your choice.

Denny Daniel Bowman, 73, husband of Barbara Campbell Griffin Bowman, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Services will be announced by Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory.

WILLIAM A. HAYDEN Sr.

William Albert Hayden Sr., 62, husband of Beatrice Ray Hayden, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at the Dorn Veterans Medical Center, Columbia.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home in Sumter and at other times at the residence, 120 Phifer St., Sumter.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced by Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning.

JULIUS BURROUGHS

LYNCHBURG -- Julius Burroughs, age 46, was born Oct. 12, 1957, to the late Franklin Burroughs and Josephine Hansworth Burroughs in Sumter County and departed this earthly life on May 29, 2004, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

He was a 1977 graduate of Mayewood High School. He was employed with Hercules Contractors and Engineer until his health failed two years ago.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories a devoted and faithful friend, Patricia Toney of Timmonsville; three daughters, Clarrisa, Julia and Beatrice of Timmonsville; five sisters, Shirley (Lawrence) Lowery of the home, Billy Jean (Lucious) Toney, Marie (Grandason) Toney, Lutricia (Roy) Kennedy, all of Lynchburg, and Annie Lee (Eddie Lee) Robinson of Sumter; one brother, Bernard Goodman of Charleston; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Earline Davis; and three brothers, Martain, Edward and Nathaniel Burroughs.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday from the Goodwill Presbyterian Church USA, Mayesville, with the Rev. Richard R. Baxter officiating. Burial will be in Goodwill cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Lawrence Lowery, 1917 Backswamp Road, Lynchburg.

Jefferson Funeral Home of Lynchburg is in charge of arrangements.
