DORETHA WHITE

Funeral services for Doretha White aka Pie, maiden name Hammett, sister of Shirley Mae Hammett and the Rev. Milton Hammett of Summerton, will be Monday at Morning Star Baptist Church on Winters Lane of Catonsville, Md.

Viewing will be today from 2 to 8 p.m. at Vaughn C. Funeral Home, Edmondson Avenue & Wildwood Parkway, Baltimore.

Wake will be from noon to 12:30 p.m. Funeral will be immediately following the wake.

PAUL HOLLAND

Paul "Big Bubba" Holland, 66, died June 3, 2004, at CM Tucker Center, Columbia.

Born April 16, 1938, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Nathaniel "Nat" and Rena Wells Holland. He attended the public schools of Sumter County. Later he relocated to Rochester, N.Y. After returning to Sumter, he joined Beulah UME Church.

Survivors include six sisters, Pearl White of Cleveland, Lue Edna Buggs, Lucille Levett, Lousie Hayes, all of Rochester, Carrie Lowery and Bernice Holland, both of Sumter; one sister-in-law, Abbie Holland of Cleveland; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a twin brother, Silas Holland, and four sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at the chapel of Job's Mortuary Inc., 312 S. Main St. with The Rev. Joesph Ricks officiating.

Burial will be in Haynesworth cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the home of his aunt, Sally Holland, 330 Love St.

Job's Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

WESLEY GAINEY

NORTH AUGUSTA -- Graveside services for Mr. Wesley Gainey, 55, of Riverview Drive, North Augusta, who died May 25, 2004, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Westover Memorial Park, Father C. Alexander McDonald officiating.

Mr. Gainey was a native of Sumter, having made North Augusta his home for the past 23 years. He was the co-owner of Hunt-Ho Farm Inc. An avid water fowl hunter, Mr. Gainey was a past chapter president of Water Fowl USA.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Randle Gainey; a daughter, Emily Louise Gainey of North Augusta; two brothers, Larry Gainey of Sumter and Ralph Boatright of the Phillipines; a sister, Kay Edge of Clover; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 115 Greenville St., SW, Aiken, SC 29801.

NAOMI HARRINGTON

Naomi Harrington, daughter of the late Enoch and Aline Hodge, was born April 25, 1924, in Sumter County. She departed this life on May 21, 2004, at her home.

She attended the public schools of Sumter County. She worked outside of the home for many years, stopping only to care for her mother. She dedicated her life to Jehovah God and enjoyed many years of faithful service, sharing her beliefs with others. She married Harmon Harrington Sr. in January 1940 and during this union they were blessed with three children.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories a loving husband, Harmon Harrington Sr. of Sumter; two daughters, Bertha Jenkins of Sumter and Emma Mae Murphy of Staten Island, N.Y.; five sisters, Daisy Neal of New York, Pauline Black of Baltimore, Anna (Frank) China of New Jersey, Louella Grant, Aline (Beck) Spears of Sumter; one sister-in-law, Emma Blanding of Sumter; one granddaughter who was raised in the home, Keshia D. Harrington; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by a son, Harmon Harrington Jr.; three sisters; and one brother.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 99 Oswego Road, Sumter, with Eugene Spann officiating, Wallace Adams and James Tate assisting. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

The family is receiving friends at the home of her grandson, Kenneth Jenkins, 426B Vining St., Sumter.

The staff of James Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

CLEO H. PARNELL

Cleo Hudson Parnell, 88, widow of Eli C. Parnell Sr., died Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Florence, she was a daughter of the late James Albert Hudson and Virginia Thomas Hudson. Mrs. Parnell was a member of Meadowbrook Church of God and was retired from Pioneer Ltd.

Surviving are two sons, Eli C. Parnell Jr. and Jimmy E. Parnell, both of Sumter; one daughter, Alma Sue Yelle of Sumter; one brother, James Hudson of Columbia; two daughters-in-law, Eleanor Parnell and Dotsy Parnell of Sumter; a son-in-law, Kenneth Yelle of Sumter; seven grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren: and numerous great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Louise Parnell Watkins; four brothers, Aaron Hudson, Loman Hudson, Joseph Hudson and Nathan Hudson; and a sister, Sue Bell.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. Tim Henderson officiating.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Meadowbrook Church of God, 920 Meadowbrook Road, Sumter, SC 29153.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

ETHEL JOHNSON

LYNCHBURG -- Mrs. Ethel Lee Boston Johnson, of 4855 Mt. Sinai Church Road, entered eternal rest at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

She was a daughter of the late Mr. Peter Boston and Mrs. Emily Jackson Boston. She was born on Sept. 15, 1915, in Sumter County. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. She was a member of the defunct Mt. Olive AME Church of Pinewood.

Survivors include one son, Herbert Johnson of Lynchburg; four sisters, Ponese Boston of Minneapolis, Lillian Boston of Brooklyn, N.Y., Sadie Boston of Sumter and May Bell Boston of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one grandson, Harry L. Fulwood of Houston, Texas; four granddaughters, Viola Cyreaque and LaTonya Nelson, both of Baton Rouge, La., Sandra Graham of Schwienfurt, Germany, and Shonda Fulwood of Columbia; and one grandchild.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Community Funeral Home with the Rev. Leroy T. James officiating, assisting by the Rev. Alfred Bradley. Burial will follow in Florence National cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the home.

Funeral procession is leaving from the home at 1 p.m.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

LILA MAE M. BUTLER

MANNING -- Mrs. Lila Mae McKnight Butler, 54, wife of Mr. Tarlton Butler, died May 24, 2004, at her residence.

Born Aug. 7, 1949, in Bloomville County, she was a daughter of the late Mr. Benjamin McKnight Sr. and Mrs. Elouise McDonald McKnight. She was a member of St. John Baptist Church and was director of the youth choir and youth department. Lila was also a professional seamstress for a number of years.

Survivors include one brother, Isaac McKnight of Manning; two sisters, Hazel (Norman) Moorer of Manning and Louise (Lawrence) Bennett of Manning.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Johnson; and three brothers, Luther, Kinley and Benjamin Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today at St. John Baptist Church, Bloomville community, with the Revs. Otis Wright, Dr. Coakley Richburg, Elder James Leach, Calvin Burgess, Effie Hilton and evangelist Elizabeth Richburg.

Burial will be in Mt. Chapel Baptist Church cemetery, Jordan community.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 919 Branchview Drive, Manning, SC 29102.

Fleming & DeLaine Funeral Home is in charge of services.

RACHEL H. BALLARD

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Rachel Hammett Ballard, 89, widow of Henry Ballard, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at Manor Care.

She was a daughter of the late James Dukes and Julie Hammett.

Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

JESSIE WILSON

FLORENCE -- Jessie Burgess Sharpe Wilson, 72, widow of Julian Bubba Sharpe and James M. Wilson, died May 28, 2004, at her residence, 6203 Summerton Hwy., Manning.

Born Nov. 15, 1931, in Paxville, she was a daughter of the late Leroy and Ella Lee Holliday Burgess.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 6203 Summerton Hwy., Manning, SC 29102.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

LILLIE MAE S. DURANT

FLORENCE -- Lillie Mae Scott Durant, 72, died May 28, 2004, at McLeod Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 14, 1931, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Willie and Marie Scott Durant.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 1024 Clement St., Apt. 4, Florence, SC 29501.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

LUCILLE FARMER

BISHOPVILLE -- Lucille Farmer, 76, wife of Johnny C. Farmer, died Friday, May 28, 2004, at McCoy Memorial Nursing Center.

Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late George Caples and the late Mary Brown Caples. She attended Mt. Pleasant Primitive Baptist Church at Browntown and was retired from Bishopville Manufacturing.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Alice Farmer and Ann Farmer, both of Bishopville; four sons, Douglas Farmer and his wife, Crystal, of Hartsville, Marvin Farmer and his wife, Ronda, of Alcolu, Donald Farmer and his wife, Elaine, of Bishopville and Art Farmer and his wife, Bonnie, of Bishopville; a brother, Jack Caples and his wife, Mary, of Bishopville; and 13 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Jackson; and two brothers, Arthur "Bubba" Caples and Ed Capell; and a grandson, Perry Munn.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Wilt officiating.

Burial will be in the Mt. Pleasant Primitive Baptist Church cemetery at Browntown.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home and other times at 227 Cousar St., Bishopville.
