MATTIE MAE T. PITTMAN

HEMINGWAY -- Mrs. Mattie Mae Taylor Pittman, 87, widow of Eugene Pittman, died Thursday, May 27, 2004, at Carolinas Hospital System, Florence.

She was born Sept. 18, 1916, in Georgetown County.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, the Rev. Harriette Massingill, 17 Magnolia St., Hemingway, SC 29554.

Services will be announced by Green's Funeral Home of Lake City.

LELLA MAE MERCHANT NELSON

MANNING -- Lella Mae Merchant Nelson, 65, wife of the late Jeremiah Nelson, died May 26, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

She was born April 11, 1939, in Clarendon County the daughter of the late Peter "Sonny" and Ida Mae James Merchant.

She was educated in the schools of Clarendon County. In her youth, she worshiped at the Mt. Calvary Fire Baptize Holiness Church in Manning. Then, she moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., and pursued a career as a nursing attendant for many years. After retirement, she returned to Manning and united herself with Trinity A.M.E. Church. Lella Mae was a very nice, caring and giving person. She gave her heart and love to everyone who came in contact with her.

She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ida Lee and her husband, Reginald Hunter, and Mrs. Annie Mae Nelson and her husband, Nathaniel Edmondson, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one brother, Mr. Henry Merchant and his wife, Barbara, of Columbia; a loving special niece, Caroline Brown and her husband, Jerome, of Blacksville, S.C.; several aunts and uncles and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and special friends.

Viewing will be held from 2:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. today. The remains will be placed in the church 10 a.m. Monday, May 31.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, May 31, at Trinity A.M.E. Church, 39 W. Rigby St., Manning.

The Rev. Dr. Bennie Colclough will officiate.

Funeral procession will leave at 10:15 a.m. from the home of her niece, Mary Ann Brown, 1104 Heriott St., Manning.

Blackwell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

GLORIA SNELL

BISHOPVILLE -- Gloria Snell died at Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia on Thursday, May 27.

The family will receive friends at the home, 533 James St., Bishopville.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Boatwright Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

DARLINE CECILLE CHAMBERS

NEWARK, N.J. -- Darline Cecille Chambers, 49, wife of Robert Lee Chambers, died May 25, 2004, in Irvington, N.J.

She was born Aug. 4, 1954, in Boydton, Va., the daughter of the late Ned and Louise Moore.

At an early age, she and her family moved to New Jersey where she resided until 2002. She attended the Newark School System until she graduated in 1972. She was gainfully employed at Comcast Cable until April 2002. At some point in the year 2000, God fulfilled one of her greatest dreams. She was reunited with the love of her life, Robert Lee Chambers, and in December of that year, she became his wife. Shortly after, they relocated to Bishopville, S.C., where she made a new home. She joined the Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church and became a member of Benjamin Chapter 346 OES.

Survivors beside her husband include one daughter, Roshonda D. Mullings and her husband, Wesley; two sisters, Emmily Johnson of Newark, N.J., and Catherine Williams of Irvington, N.J.; and one grandchild.

She was preceded in death by five siblings, Norman, Ned Jr., James, Mary Ellen and Wallicia.

The remains will be placed in the church 1 p.m Monday.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 31, 2004, at Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church, Hwy. 441, Woodrow, S.C.

The Rev. Timothy A. Johnson, Sr. will officiate.

Burial will be in Mt. Olive Memorial Gardens, Sumter.

Pall bearers will be the Masons. Floral bearers will be members of Benjamin Chapter 346 OES.

The funeral procession will leave at 1:20 p.m. from 1698 Green Lane, Bishopville.

ANNIE BELL STUCKEY LEWIS

BISHOPVILLE -- Mrs. Annie Bell Stuckey Lewis, wife of Deacon Fate Lewis, died May 29, 2004, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. Services are incomplete.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 512 Red Hill Road, Rembert.

Services will be announced by Wilson's Funeral Home.

NELL COMMANDER MILLING

Nell Commander Milling, 95, widow of David Edgar Milling, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, at her home.

Funeral services will be announced by Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory.

KEMPER EUGENE HIll Jr.

CADES -- Kemper Eugene "Bubba" Hill Jr., 83, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

He was born March 13, 1921 in Cades a son of the late Kemper Eugene and Alice Rebecca McElveen Hill. He was the widower of Jacqueline Wilson Hill.

Mr. Hill was a WWII U.S. Army veteran, a POW and a member of the American Legion. He was a retired farmer and a member of Cades Methodist Church. He had been a resident of Soloman's Home in Sumter for the last four years.

Survivors include a son, Kemper E. Hill III and his wife, Sherry, of Daytona Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Mrs. Charles B. (Janet) James Jr. of Sumter; four grandchildren, Charles Burgess James III and his wife, Rebecca, of Sumter, Jacquelyn James Galloway and her husband, Clint, of Irmo, and Norman L. Yelverton and Cindy L. Yelverton, both of Daytona Beach; and two great-grandchildren, Sara Rebecca James and Wells Kemper James of Sumter.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Graham cemetery in Cades. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Brockington Funeral Home in Lake City and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles B. James Jr., 150 Tradd Circle, Sumter.

Memorials may be made to Soloman's Home in Sumter or to Cades Methodist Church.

Brockington Funeral Home of Lake City is serving the family.

DEACON WILLIE JAMES SEALS

MANNING -- Deacon Willie James Seals Sr., 89, widower of Eloise Bickerson Seals, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

He was born Sept. 16, 1914, in the Zoe Hill community of Clarendon County the son of the late Elijah Seals and Florence Richburg Seals.

He was baptized at a young age at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Manning. After moving to Brooklyn, N.Y., he joined and was ordained a deacon of Bethany Baptist Church of Brooklyn. He later served as vice chairman of the board of deacons at Bethany Baptist Church, David Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Austin, Texas, and Elizabeth Baptist Church in Manning. He retired after 34 years with New York City Transit Authority. He served his country in the U.S. Army National Guard and the U.S. Air Force Reserves and retired after 20 years of service.

Survivors include a son, the Rev. Willie James Seals Jr. of Rochester, N.Y.; two adopted sons, William F. Faines Jr. of Bronx, N.Y., and Gary (Mary) Faines of Brockton, Mass.; two daughters, Dr. Florence J. Cherry of Ithaca, N.Y., and JoAnn Seals of Queens, N.Y.; a special daughter, Suzanne Gist; and two sisters, O'Neal Mariner of Oceanside, Calif., and Josephine White of Westbury, N.Y.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Lee Ernest, Alver, Leroy and Lincoln Seals.

The remains will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday at Elizabeth Baptist Church, Highway 301 South, Manning with the Rev. Dr. Ashley B. Vaughn, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will deacons and trustees of the church. Honorary pallbearers will be be the U.S. Air Force honor guard. Floral bearers will be deaconesses and ladies of the church.

The family will receive friends at his residence, 2018 Old Georgetown Road, Manning.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

HELEN L. RICHARDSON STRAW

Helen L. Richardson Straw, 76, wife of John W. Straw, died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at a local nursing facility.

Born in Warren, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Elliott Richardson and Mildred Batchelder Richardson.

Mrs. Straw was retired from Speeds Selector Inc. in Auburn, Ohio. She was a Lutheran.

Surviving are her husband of Sumter; three brothers, Donald Richardson of Sumter, Robert Richardson and Edward Richardson, both of Geauga Co., Ohio.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.

Entombment will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and at other times at the home, 13 Cecil St.

ROSEZELL GIBSON PORTER

Rosezell Gibson Porter, 73, widow of Joseph Porter, died Thursday, May 27, 2004, in Sumter.

She was born Nov. 2, 1930, in Richland County the daughter of the late Joe and Bertha Mae Simon Gibson.

She received her education from the public schools of Lower Richland County.

Survivors include three daughters, Annie Lee Richardson, Maryann (Warren) Singleton and Joan (Johnnie) Gore, all of Sumter; one son, James (Rosa Lee) Porter of Sumter; three adopted children Marcus Garrick and Latoya (Johnnie) Rush, both of Sumter, and Derrick Garrick of Eastover; two brothers, Purnell (Rosa Mae) Gibson of Sumter and Lewis (Susie) Gibson of Eastover; two sisters, Catherine (Sam) Jackson of Gadsden and Lillie Bell Miles of Eastover; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Johnny Porter, and one daughter, Rosetta P. Carter.

The remains will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday from the New Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter.

The Rev. Hazel Charles, officiating eulogist, will be assisted by the Rev. Henry Presley and the Rev. Dr. L.W. Walker Sr.

Burial will be in Walker cemetery in Sumter.

Pallbearers will be her nephews and floral bearers will be her nieces.

The funeral procession will leave 104 W. Moore St., Sumter, at 1:20 p.m.

Family will receive friends at 104 W. Moore St., Sumter.

Williams Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
