MARY MAGDALENE McFADDEN

Mary Magdalene McFadden, age 82, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter County, she was the daughter of the late Stroy and Elizabeth Smith Scriven. The family will receive friends at the home, 26 White St.

Funeral services will be announced by Scriven Funeral.

CECELIA McCRAY

MANNING -- Cecelia McCray, 46, died May 30, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born May 17, 1958, in New Zion, she was the daughter of the late Willie "Son" McCray and Lugenia Eaddy McCray and stepdaughter of Josephine Dickey McCray. She was also the sister of the Rev. Jerome McCray of Manning.

The family will receive friends at the home of her stepmother, Josephine D. McCray of 1531 Little Star Road in Manning. Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home.

JESSIE WILSON

MANNING -- Jessie Lee Burgess Sharpe Wilson, 72, died Friday, May 28, 2004, at her home.

Born Nov. 15, 1931, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Leroy and Ella Lee Burgess.

Mrs. Wilson was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. She received her nursing certificate and training from Sumter Technical College. In 1998, she devoted herself to volunteering as a foster grandparent to children in Clarendon School District 2. Mrs. Wilson received several awards for her outstanding and dedicated service in nursing and caring for youth.

Mrs. Wilson was first united in holy matrimony to the late Mr. Julian Bubba Sharpe Sr. This union was blessed with five children. She was later married to the late Rev. James M. Wilson.

She joined St. Martin Church of Christ in Baltimore, where she received salvation through the preaching of the Gospel. In 1971, she relocated to South Carolina and joined Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Paxville. She served faithfully with the Minister's Wives Ministry of the Black River Association, Adult Sunday School Class and Missionary Department. She was also affiliated with Macedonia F.B.H. Church in the Silver community.

Survivors include two sons, Ramon Boyd of the home and Amos Sharpe of Chicago; three daughters, Dorothy (Maris) Singleton of Pinewood, Elouise Boyd of Sumter and Caro (Garfield) Jackson of Baltimore; one brother, Elder Amos Burgess; three sisters, Daisy Pearson, Elder Cassie Mithcell and evangelist Elizabeth Blanding; three additional brothers, Frank Brunson, John Brunson and Wilbur Brunson; three additional sisters, Shirley Ann McCray, Ella Mae Brunson and Martha James; 18 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three devoted caregivers, Barbara Huggins, Barbara McConico and Marylin Billups; two sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by one son, Julian Sharpe; one grandson, Andre Sharpe; one granddaughter, Ashley Sharpe; two brothers, Alfred Burgess and Willie Burgess; and two sisters, Delois Burgess and Marie Servance.

The wake service will be held today from 6 to 7 p.m. at Job's Mortuary, 312 S. Main St. in Sumter. The remains will be placed in the church Wednesday at 1 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Paxville with Elder Steve Burgess officiating and the Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty, Minister Wanda Williams and Elder A. Burgess assisting.

Burial will follow in Macedonia F.B.H. Church cemetery in Silver.

Job's Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

MARY ED GRAHAM STOKES

BISHOPVILLE -- Mary Ed Graham Stokes, 85, widow of Francis Emory Stokes, died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center in Hartsville.

Born in Rock Hill, she was a daughter of the late James Edward Graham and the late Mary Williamson Graham.

She attended Columbia College and was a former owner of Stokes Ladies' Wear in Bishopville. She was a member of the Bethlehem United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Harriette Yarbrough and her husband, Ron, of Pensacola, Fla.; a son, Bill Stokes and his wife, Angela, of Hartsville; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Stokes of Columbia; grandchildren Allysa Clay and her husband, Jim, of Marietta, Ga., Bryce Yarbrough of Marietta, Kimberly Stokes of Greenville, Will Stokes of Hartsville, and Trey Stokes of Hartsville; and a great-granddaughter, Cathryn Riley Clay.

She was preceded in death by a son, Edward Graham Stokes.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Bethlehem United Methodist Church cemetery with the Rev. Ken Phelps officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Memorials may be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 167, Bishopville, SC 29010, or to the Bishopville Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 927, Bishopville, SC 29010.

Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

JULIUS BURROUGHS

Mr. Julius Burroughs of Timmonsville died on Saturday, May 29, 2004, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence after an illness.

Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Frank and Josephine Burroughs. The family is receiving friends at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Lawrence Lowery of 1917 Backswamp Road in Lynchburg.

Services will be announced by Jefferson Funeral Home in Lynchburg.

LESLIE J. PHILLIPS Sr.

Leslie J. Phillips Sr., 97, died Monday in Kingstree. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Williamsburg Funeral Home.

MARION A. DUNHAM

Mr. Marion Anthony Dunham, 44, of 260 Sandy Run Drive, entered eternal rest on Sunday, May 30, 2004, at the Dorn Veterans Medical Center, Columbia.

He was born in Sumter County on July 26, 1959.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home.

Funeral plans are incomplete and will be announced by Community Funeral Home of Sumter.

WILLIS SAMUEL Sr.

MANNING -- Willis "Bo Bo" Samuel Sr., 75, husband of Lou Ella Bradley Samuel, died June 1, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Sept. 2, 1928, in the Foreston section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Tom Samuel and Ella Matthews Samuel.

The family will receive friends at the home of his wife, Lou Ella Samuel, 1151 Innbrook Drive, Manning.

Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

JAMES PEARSON

BISHOPVILLE -- Mr. James Pearson, the son of the late Rev. Sammie and Sallie Pearson, was born Nov. 11, 1922, in Bishopville. He was called to eternal rest on May 18, 2004, in West Palm Beach, Fla.

He attended the public schools of Lee County. He was united in holy matrimony to Azalee Johnson. To this union, one daughter was born.

He is survived by one daughter, Beverly Pearson of New Jersey; three brothers, Deacon Reese (Lula) Pearson of Bishopville, the Rev. Willie Arthur (Gladys) Pearson of Sumter and Henry Pearson; two grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Bishopville with the Rev. Gregory Jackson Sr., pastor.

The procession will leave at 2:30 p.m. from the home of his brother, Deacon Reese Pearson, 520 Third St., Bishopville.

Boatwright Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

LILLIE MAE S. DURANT

FLORENCE -- Lillie Mae Scott Durant, aka "Mrs. Bill, the Hammer Lady," 72, died May 28, 2004, at McLeod Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 14, 1931, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Willie and Marie "Fant" Scott Wilson. She attended the public schools of Lee County. At an early age, she joined St. Paul United Methodist Church, Elliott. After moving to Florence, she attended New Ebenezer Baptist Church, Florence.

Survivors include six children, Charles D. Durant Sr. of Camden, Darnell D. Laws of Long Island City, N.Y., Gerald L. Durant of Elliott, Cynthia Durant and Theresa Durant, both of Darlington, and Deneen Durant of New Haven, Conn.; one uncle, Sam Scott Sr. of Elliott; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law; a close cousin, Addie Lee Wilson McCray; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Durant; and one brother, Willie Guy Wilson.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Savannah Grove Baptist Church, Effingham, with the Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr., pastor.

Burial will be in Florence Memorial Gardens.

The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 109 Clants Drive, Darlington 29532.

CHARLIE EDWARDS

REMBERT -- Charlie Edwards, 82, husband of Lillie Mae Edwards of Rembert, died Saturday, May 29, 2004.

Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Dan and Mattie Hollimon Edwards.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

Collins Funeral Home of Camden is in charge of the arrangements.

In 1971, she relocated to South Carolina and reunited herself with Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Paxville, where she served faithfully with the Minister's Wives, Ministry of Black River Association, Adult Sunday School Class and Missionary Department. She was also affiliated with Macedonia F.B.H. Church, Silver.

She was preceded in death by one son, Julian B. Sharpe Jr.; one grandson, Andre' Sharpe; one granddaughter, Ashley Sharpe; two brothers, Alfred Burgess and Bishop Willie R. Burgess Sr.; two sisters, Delois Burgess and Marie Servance.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Paxville, with the Rev. Clifford Gaymon, pastor, Minister Wanda Williams officiating, assisted by Elder Steve Burgess, Elder A. Burgess and the Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr.

Burial will be in Macedonia F.B.H. Church cemetery, Silver.

The body will be placed in the church at noon.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 6203 Summerton Highway, Manning 29102.
