LEE H. THOMAS JR.

ROCK HILL -- Lee H. Thomas, 84, husband of Susan Bynum Thomas, died July 15, 2004, in Rock Hill.

Born in Wedgefield, he was the son of the late Lee H. Thomas, Sr. and the late Dorothy Parkin Thomas.

Mr. Thomas graduated from the Boys High school in Sumter and from The Citadel Class of 1942. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and retired owner of his construction company.

Surviving are his wife of Rock Hill, four sons, Lee H. Thomas, III, Headen Thomas both of Charlotte, Cherry Thomas, and Alvis Thomas both of Mt. Pleasant; a daughter, Alice Faircloth; two brothers, Dr. Rawling Pratt-Thomas of Charleston and Frank Parkin Thomas of Sumter; a sister, Dorothy Hunter of Columbia.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill.

Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Laurelwood cemetery.

The family will receive friends following the service.

Greene Funeral Home of Rock Hill is in charge of the arrangements.

KENNETH BASSARD Jr.

CLINTON, Md. -- Kenneth Michael Bassard Jr., 23, died Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Born March 14, 1981, in Clinton, he was a son of Kenneth Michael Bassard Sr. and Mary White Bassard.

A graduate of Oxon Hill High School Science and Technology Program, he was awarded the prestigious Merhoff Scholarship for academic excellence. He enrolled in the University of Maryland Baltimore Campus to pursue a degree in computer graphics and animation.

Survivors besides his parents of the home include a brother, Ryan Bassard; a sister Sarina B. Marshall; and an uncle and aunt, John B. "Skip" Bassard and his wife, Mary, of Manning.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today in the Chapel of Lee Funeral Home in Clinton with Donnie Simon officiating. Burial will follow in the Resurrection cemetery.

MARIE HUNTER

Marie Hunter, 97, wife of Wyatt Hunter, died July 17, 2004, at Palmetto Richland Hospital.

Born Feb. 20, 1907, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Mack Kirkland and Ella Alston.

The family will receive friends at the home, 5300 Cimmaron Road in Rembert.

Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St.

PRINCESS WILLIAMS

Princess Arline Diggs Williams, 37, wife of Anthony Williams of Oxen Hills, Md., died July 11, 2004, at her residence, 7450 Coon Ridge Road in Horatio.

Born Sept. 17, 1966, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Alexander Diggs and Mamie Osborne Williams.

She attended the public schools of Sumter County and graduated from Hillcrest High School. Princess was a member of Rafting Creek Baptist Church, Rembert.

She is survived by three maternal brothers, Jackie Lee Williams of Salisbury, Md., Eric Diggs of Elizabeth, Md., and Tyrone (Sharon) Williams of Bishopville, three paternal brothers, Richard Diggs of Newark, N.J., Don and Ioudi Diggs, both of Rembert, Johnnie (Mary) Diggs of Camden; eight paternal sisters, Cynthia Cunningham, Maybeline Torres, Patricia Diggs, Linda Diggs, Windell Diggs, all of Newark, Bertha Drakeford of Rembert, Jessie Mae Pollard of Augusta, Ga., and Terry Ellington of Columbus, Ga.; her maternal grandmother, Rita Diggs of Rembert; her mother-in-law, Hester Williams of Horatio.

She is preceded in death by one brother, Gary Diggs.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rafting Creek Baptist Church in Rembert with the Rev. Dr. Charles H. Davis, pastor, eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Burdell Hill, the Rev. Sharon Boyd and the Rev. Lillian Reynolds.

Burial will be in Rafting Creek Churchyard cemetery.

Pallbearers will be friends of the family.

Floral bearers will be friends of the family.

The procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the home of her aunt, Mrs. Fannie Mickens, 6755 Richbow Road, Rembert.

CORNELIA WESTERN SOUTER

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Cornelia Western Souter, 75, 8421 Little John Drive, Columbia, wife of the late Malcom Souter Sr., died Saturday, July 17, 2004, at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Ga.

Born in Sumter County on June 9, 1929, she was a daughter of Pauline Austin Western and the late Anderson Western.

The family will receive friends at 8421 Little John Drive in Columbia.

Services will be announced by Summerton Funeral Services of Summerton.

PAMELA COKER

Pamela Delores Ann Coker, 49, wife of Larry W. Coker, Sr., died Saturday, July 17, 2004 at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Jackson W. McElveen, Jr. and the late Adele Sports McElveen.

She was affiliated with the Sumter Full Gospel Church.

Survivors besides her husband include a daughter, Tara Beaver of Sumter; a son, Freddie Truesdale, Jr. of Sumter; a sister, Shirley M. Mitchum of Sumter; and a brother, Donald A. McElveen of Sumter.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Jackson W. McElveen, III.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Monday in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with Rev. Tyrone Mitchum, Rev. Kenneth Truesdale, and Rev. Jamie McElveen officiating.

Burial will be in the Sumter cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Matthew Mitchum, Paul Mitchum, W.J. Coker, Wayne Greene, Buddy Page, and Donnie McElveen.

Larry W. Coker, Jr. will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

WILLIE WITHERSPOON

Dyson's Home for Funerals and Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Summerton, along with the Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson, pastor, announce funeral services for the late Deacon Willie Moses Witherspoon will be held at 11 a.m. today at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Summerton with the Rev. William T. Johnson, pastor, officiating.

Deacon Willie Moses Witherspoon (age 100) entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born in Summerton, he was the son of the late James and Cary Anna Georgia Witherspoon. He was the widower of Julia "Mable" Blanding Witherspoon. He was preceded in death by three sons, Robert Lee Witherspoon, Ellison Witherspoon and Elijah Witherspoon.

He was a member of Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Summerton, where he served as a member of the trustee board. He served as a deacon for over 60 years, becoming chairman of the Deacon Board in 1983. He retired from chairman in 1996 to care for his wife. He served in the following ministries: Gospel Choir, Helping Hands, Industrial Club, member of the Greater Friendly Union and the Missionary Society. He was instrumental in building the church's Fellowship Hall. He was employed with the South Carolina Highway Department as a builder of roads and bridges.

He leaves to mourn his passing and grow from his memories three sons, Willie Henry Witherspoon and O'Donald Witherspoon, both of Baltimore, Moses James (Mary) Witherspoon of Lancaster, Pa.; seven daughters, Julia (Royal) Holley of Baltimore, Rounette (Carl) Young and Mccolia Richardson, all of Philadelphia, Cary Robinson of Summerton, Ruby Deloris McKinney, Cynthia (Elijah) McConico and Retha Harvin, all of Lancaster, Pa.; four brothers, Elijah Witherspoon of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Nathaniel, Fred (Joann) and John Witherspoon, all of Baltimore; four sisters, Pearl Tindal of Summerton, Susie (Berkley) Calhoun and Catherine (Joseph) Bullock, both of Baltimore, and Frances Conyers of New Haven, Conn.; a god-daughter, Vashtie Hamilton; 46 grandchildren; 74 great-grandchildren; many, many great-great-grandchildren; and host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and close friends.

The family will receive friends at the home, 1294 Urbana Road, Summerton.

EDWIN WILSON

MANNING -- Edwin Wilson, 78, husband of Fannie Billups Wilson, died Monday, July 19, 2004, at the Palmetto Health Richland Hospital in Columbia.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Edwin Wilson Sr. and the late Grace Reynolds Wilson. Mr. Wilson was a retired sales manager with Bill Schultz Chevrolet Co. in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Surviving are his wife of Manning; two sons, Ed Wilson and wife, Sandy, and Jerry Wilson of Sumter; a sister, Pat Brown and husband, Murr, of Sumter; four stepchildren, Paula Bramlett and James Stewart, both of Florence, Beth Bennett and Patricia Holcombe of North Carolina; two grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.

WADE TAYLOR Jr.

LAKE CITY -- Wade Taylor Jr., 51, husband of Catherine Taylor of Hemingway, died Thursday, July 15, 2004.

Born May 17, 1953, in Hemingway, he was a son of the late Wade Taylor Sr. and Corine Taylor. He retired from Royster Fertilizer Co. of Lake City.

Survivors include five brothers, Thomas J. (Elerine) Taylor and the Rev. John Taylor, both of Hemingway, Frank E. Taylor of Brooklyn, N.Y., James Taylor of Hemingway and Richard Allen (Carolyn) Taylor of the U.S. Navy, Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Aldean Barbor of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Helen (Huberrt) Scott of Hemingway.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday from Jerusalem AME Church, Hemingway, with the Rev. James Frost officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The funeral procession will leave at 1 p.m. from the home, 124 Ripple Lane, Lake City.

Green's Funeral Home of Lake City is in charge of arrangements.

PEARL M. WALKER

Pearl Mary Walker died Thursday, July 15, 2004, at her residence.

Born in Mayesville on Jan. 15, 1939, she was a daughter of Nettie Green Johnson and the late Otis Jerome Walker. She graduated from Eastern High School, Mayesville, in 1956. She married Otis Jerome Walker in December 1956, and to this loving union three children were born. Mrs. Walker was employed as a nurses aide at SeaView Hospital for 15 years. She served as chairwoman of the Municipal Union-District 37. She worked and retired as an insurance agent with John Hancock Insurance Co.

Surviving in addition to her mother, Nettie G. Johnson, are three daughters, AnnMarie Walker of Staten Island, N.Y., Kim Walker Darby of Perthamboy, N.J. and Lori Walker McGhaney of Sumter; three grandchildren, Melvin Hinton Jr. of Sumter, Robert Gibson III and Joseph Darby of Perthamboy; one great-grandchild, Jayla Monique Gibson; two sisters, Annette Johnson Alexander of Staten Island, N.Y. and Sallie Johnson of Dalzell; one brother, James Johnson Jr. of Alexandria, Va.

Memorial services were held at 6 p.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness, Rahway, N.J.

Stratford Funeral Home, Staten Island, N.Y. was in charge of arrangements.
