ANNA BELLE B. STUKES

SUMMERTON -- Anna Belle Barnett Stukes, 82, widow of Thomas E. Stukes, died Monday, July 19, 2004, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia.

Born Dec. 21, 1921, in Russellville, she was a daughter of the late John and Flossie Lambert Barnett. She was retired from Summerton Dry Cleaners and was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Davis Station.

Surviving are three sons, Robert E. Stukes and wife, Martha, of Big Pine Key, Fla., E.G. Stukes and wife, Noonie, and Timothy R. Stukes and wife, Davett, of Summerton; two sisters, Sarah Brinkley and Stella Butler of Charleston; two brothers, Richard Barnett of Charleston and Norman Barnett of Jedburg; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today in the Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning with the Rev. Bob Allen officiating.

Pallbearers will be Van Stukes, James Stukes, Mitchell Richburg, Thomas Barnett, Bob Patrick and Gene Wells.

The family will receive friends at the home of E.G. and Noonie Stukes, 38 S. Duke St., Summerton.

Memorials may be made to Summerton United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 35, Summerton, SC 29148 or to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, c/o Gladys Griffin, 1372 White Oak Drive, Manning, SC 29102.

RITA F. CAOUETTE

SUMMERTON -- Rita Flora Caouette, 80, widow of Louis Caouette, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born March 17, 1924, in Southbridge, Mass., she was a daughter of the late Edouard and Clara Desautels Lizotte. She was a retired lens inspector.

Surviving are a son, Robert R. Corriveau and his wife, Deb, of Manning; a sister, Lucille Surprenant of New Jersey; a brother, Gerald Lizotte of Southbridge, Mass.; a grandson, Shawn Corriveau of Goose Creek; and a great-granddaughter, Courtney Corriveau.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. July 30 in St. Joseph's cemetery, North Grosvenordale, Conn.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning is in charge of the arrangements.

WILLIAM PLAYER

HILLTOP LAKES, Texas -- William "Bill" Player, age 76, husband of Jean Player, died on Sunday, July 18, 2004, in Arlington.

He was born Dec. 20, 1927, in Georgia. He retired from DynCorp after 16 1/2 years. He then started his own trucking business in the early 1970s. After retiring, he began working at Ameriquest Field (Ballpark in Arlington), where he worked for nine years.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, William Thomas Player Jr. and Russell Scott Player and his wife, Irma, all of Ft. Worth, Texas; one daughter, Lisa Ann Jansen and her husband, Kurt, of Boulder, Colo.; one sister, Mary Nell Davis of Lady Lake, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Michael Wayne Player.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Greenwood Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Greenwood Funeral Home.

ETHEL BURGESS

ALCOLU -- Ethel Annie Mae Preston Burgess, 77, widow of the Rev. Golden Burgess Jr., died July 18, 2004, at Hopewell Healthcare Center, Sumter.

Born Aug. 26, 1926, in Kingstree, Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of the late Walter Preston and Rebecca Redden Preston. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. She accepted Christ as her personal savior and joined Cypress Fork AME Church, where she served faithfully in many capacities. In 1961, her husband was called into the ministry and she then served as first lady at the following churches: White Oak AME, Shiloh AME, Union Cypress AME, Circute and Santee and Oaks AME churches.

Survivors include two sons, Roy Lee (Sarah) Burgess of Chesapeake, Va., and General Lee (Lorraine) Burgess of Alcolu; one daughter, Renee (Welvin) Starks of Alcolu; two brothers, Walter Preston of New York City and Leroy (Annie) Preston of Darlington; two sisters, Lubertha Hendry of Coatsville, Pa., and Malvenia (James) Hammett of Miami; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Livingston and Shakespear; and three brothers, James, Cleo and Clarence Preston.

The remains will be placed in the church at noon Thursday.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Trinity AME Church, 39 Rigby St., Manning, with the Rev. Leroy Green, pastor of Cypress Fork AME Church, officiating, assisting the Revs. Rufus Gaymon, Franklin McCants and the Rev. Dr. George Hicks.

Pallbearers will be grandsons.

Floral bearers will be granddaughters.

Burial will be in Cypress Fork AME Church cemetery, Cypress Fork community of Alcolu.

The family will receive friends at her residence, 8036 Juneburn Road, Cypress Fork community of Alcolu.

ISABELLA M. SHARPE

Isabella McCants Sharpe, 56, died July 20, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 8, 1947, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late William McCants Sr. and Isabelle Britton McCants.

The family will receive friends at the home of her brother, William McCants, 1335 Salterstown Road, Sumter, SC 29153.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

MARIE K. HUNTER

Marie Kirkland Hunter, 97, widow of Wyatt Hunter, died July 17, 2004, at Palmetto Richland Hospital, Columbia.

Born Feb. 20, 1907, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Mack Kirkland and Ella Alston Kirkland. She was educated in the Sumter County public schools. She accepted Christ as her Lord and savior and was a faithful member of the Greater Mount Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, Sumter, where she served diligently until her health failed. Marie, "Piggie," as she was affectionately called, was a very loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and aunt. She was loved by everyone who knew her. She lost her husband at a young age and raised her 13 children on her farm that she worked to pay for with the help of her children.

Survivors include three daughters, Ella Bell Boykin of Camden, Marie (Clemon) Felder and Mary McCleese, both of Newark, N.J.; two sons, Charles (Gloria) Hunter of Patterson, N.J., and Mack (Irene) Hunter of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a grandson whom she raised, Anthony (Sandra) Hunter of Camden; two sisters, Mamie Pollard of Camden and Bernice Dinkins of Rembert; a daughter-in-law, Mary Hunter of Borden; a son-in-law, Louis Grant of Brooklyn, N.J.; a special niece, Ida (Sue) Clea of Rembert; 29 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by six sons, Harrison, Robert, Wyatt, Henry, J.C., and Joseph Hunter; one daughter, Carolyn Grant; three sisters; two brothers; and a great-granddaughter, Katrice Gardner.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday from the Greater Mount Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, Miller Road, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Marvin Hodge, pastor, eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Mary Harvin and Minister John W. Lee. Burial will be in Mt. Pisgah Baptist Churchyard cemetery, Rembert.

Pallbearers will be grandsons.

Floral bearers will be granddaughters.

The procession will leave at 2:20 p.m. from the home, 5300 Cimmaron Road, Rembert.

ROY J. CHAPMAN

Roy Jackson "Jack" Chapman, 80, husband of Ruth Wagner Chapman, died Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at a local nursing center.

Born in Portsmouth, Ohio, he was a son of the late Luke A. Chapman and the late Blanche Lykins Chapman. He attended Crosspoint Baptist Church and was retired from CSX Railroad. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a 33rd degree mason and was a member of the Sumter Braves Advisory Board.

Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include three grandchildren, Matthew Chapman and his wife, Mandy, Melissa Chapman Bailey and her husband, Wayne, and Daniel Chapman and his wife, Jane Marie, all of Sumter; six great-grandchildren, Ashton Yarborough, Dillon Chapman, Dane Bailey, Luke Chapman, Emily Bailey and Davis Chapman.

He was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Allen Chapman.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Richardson officiating.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Matt Chapman, Danny Chapman, Wayne Bailey, John Davis, Melvin Worley and J. Allen Prescott.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Sumter Masonic Lodge No. 364.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today with Masonic rites at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at 6 Fern Court.

DAVID C. JOLLY

Retired Col. David Chester Jolly, age 86, beloved husband of 61 years to Mary Elizabeth Carrolan Jolly, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at Covenant Place.

Col. Jolly was born in Wakaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of the late George Washington Jolly and Emma Birdella Hartman Jolly of Salem, N.Y. He attended Washington Academy in Salem and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. While in the military, he attended numerous service schools including the National War College in Washington, D.C. He married Mary E. Carrolan on Nov. 11, 1942. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1941 to 1970. As a command pilot with more than 6,700 hours, he flew bomber aircraft including B-52s, B-36s, and B-24s. He flew more than 67 missions into Berlin during the Berlin Airlift. His decorations included the Legion of Merit, Air Medal, Army of Occupation (Germany), and Medal for Humane Action.

Surviving in addition to his wife of Sumter are one son, Lawrence George Jolly and his wife, Julie, of Henrico, N.C.; two granddaughters, Mary Kimberly Jolly Jackson of Lakeland, Fla., and Koren Jolly Dellinger of Timberville, Va.; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alice Aldrich of Greenwich, N.Y., and Goldie Wands of Cambridge, N.Y.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, George Jolly, William Jolly and Christopher Jolly; and two sisters, Gladys Jolly Dutertre and Ethel Jolly Stout.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Church of the Holy Comforter with the Rev. Mark Riggs officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at 10 a.m. at the church Parish Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Covenant Place "Endowment Fund," 2825 Carter Road, Sumter, SC 29150, or The Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter, 207 N. Main St., Sumter, SC 29150, or a charity of one's choice.

CORNELIA SOUTER

COLUMBIA -- Cornelia Alice Western Souter, 75, widow of Malcolm Souter Sr., died Saturday, July 17, 2004, at Memorial University Medical Center, Savannah, Ga.

Born June 9, 1929, in Sumter, she was a daughter of Pauline Western Haynesworth of Sumter and the late Anderson Western. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Sumter County. Early in life, she accepted Christ as her personal savior and was a faithful member of Bethel AME Church, Sumter, where her duties never seemed a load. She was a member of the choir, Missionary Society, trustee board and usher board. In 1960, Mrs. Souter and her late husband, Malcolm, moved their family to Brooklyn, N.Y. She joined Calvary AME Church, continuing her Christian duties as a member of the Missionary Society, senior choir, Sunday school teacher, director of the young people's choir and the young people's department -- Christian education. Mrs. Souter received numerous awards and certificates for her outstanding work as a missionary. Her Christian duties filtered throughout the community with the distribution of food through the SHARE program. She also worked diligently with voter registration and elections. Mrs. Souter was employed by the Tic Toc Cleaners.

After the death of her husband, Mrs. Souter relocated to Sumter and reunited her membership at Bethel AME Church, continuing her duties as a committed Christian. She was gainfully employed at Sumter Dry Cleaners until her health failed.

Mrs. Souter's loving memories will be cherished by her sons, Paul Wayne Souter, with whom she resided in Columbia, Malcolm (Ruby) Souter of St. Augustine, Fla., Clifford Edwin Souter of Racine, Wis., Freddie Jimmy Souter of Manhattan, N.Y.; daughter, Zenobia Jean Souter of Brooklyn, N.Y.; foster daughter, Madeline Caldwell of Columbia; mother, Pauline Weston Haynesworth of Sumter; brothers, Harmon Weston Sr. (Rosa) of Augusta, Ga., Bobby Eugene Weston Sr. of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Harry Lee Weston of Sumter; sister, Katie Mae Weston of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren, including Paul Wayne Jr. and Brittany of the home; her caretakers, cousin Barbara Martin and family friend, James McGill; nieces; nephews; extended families, the Caldwells and McKnights; and other relatives and friends.

The remains will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Friday.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Bethel AME Church, 218 Calhoun St., Sumter. Officiating minister will be the Rev. R.E. Galloway, pastor, assisting the Rev. Richard McKnight, the Rev. Warren Hatcher and the Rev. Dr. S.R. Miott.

Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Calverton cemetery, Long Island, N.Y.

The funeral procession will leave at 2:15 p.m. from the home of her son, Paul Wayne Souter, 8421 Little John Drive, Columbia.

Viewing for Mrs. Souter will be today in the chapel of Sumter Funeral Service, 623 Manning Ave., Sumter.
