BISHOPVILLE -- Mr. Thomas "Boot" Charles Sr. died Monday, July 26, 2004, at his home. He was a son of the late Hattie Wilson Charles and Walter Charles.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at New Zion AME Church with the Rev. F.W. Spears, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The Family will receive friends at 50 John Wesley Road, Bishopville.

Boatwright Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

DOROTHY T. GALLOWAY

Dorothy Thigpen Galloway, 72, widow of Robert Galloway, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at a local nursing home.

Born in Georgetown, she was the daughter of Gladys Thigpen Gibbons and the late Shelley Thigpen. She was previously married to Clarence DuBose.

Surviving are her mother of Sumter; three daughters, Patsy DuBose Garrison of Myrtle Beach, Kathy DuBose Warren and husband, Toby, of Sumter and Pamela DuBose Sharp and husband, Harley, of Cary, N.C.; three sisters, Donna Ray Rabon and husband, George, Brenda Geddings and husband, Ralph and Shelley Bendel and husband, Jim, all of Sumter; two brothers, Bobby Thigpen and wife, Eloise, of Charleston and Danny Thigpen and wife, Shirley, of Columbia; nine grandchildren, Kari Buckner, Tracy Williams, Justin Lewis, Mark DuBose, Missy Gentry, Gary DuBose, Tammy Davis, Eric DuBose and Toby Warren, Jr.; and nine great-grandchildren, Landon, Gabrielle, Zack, Megan, Elizabeth, Brandon, Sawyer, Summer and Savannah.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Wayne DuBose and Ricky DuBose; and a daughter, Beverly Kay.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Huggins and the Rev. Robert Morris officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Justin Lewis, Eric DuBose, Gary DuBose, Billy Davis, Toby Warren Jr. and Donny Buckner.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of her granddaughter Tammy, 1308 Boulevard Road.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Assoc. Columbia Chapter, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202.

KIMANEH A. POMPEY-BROWN

MANNING -- Kimaneh Asante Pompey-Brown, 26 days old, son of Tammey D. Brown and Johnny A. Pompey, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia.

He was born July 1, 2004, in Manning.

Survivors besides his mother of Manning and father of Sumter include paternal grandparents, Johnny and Elease R. Pompey of Greeleyville; maternal grandparents, Marjorie Cooper Brown and the late Frankie Brown of Greeleyville; paternal great-grandparents, Flora J. Pompey of Greeleyville and Isaac Montgomery of St. Stephen; godparents, Hardy (the Rev. Annette) Ragin of Manning; godfather, Wayne Ragin of Sumter; and two sisters, Ka'Mangeneh Z. Ragin and Sy'Andeneh T. Ragin of Manning.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning. with the Rev. Annette Ragin officiating.

Burial will be in McGill cemetery in Kingstree.

The family will receive friends at the home, 1170 Travis Lane, Manning.

ESSEX DURANT Jr.

Essex "Boobie" Durant Jr., 51, husband of Bertha Martin Durant, died Saturday, July 24, 2004, in Rimini.

Born Oct. 10, 1952, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Essex Durant Sr. and Dora Rhames Durant. He received his formal education in the Sumter County District 17 public school system. A man of average height and strong muscular build, he possessed a love for fishing, enjoyed playing baseball with a passion and was a member of several local teams in the Sumter and Pinewood areas. His sense of obligation and love of family and friends made him well known throughout the community. He was presently employed by the Vaughn Bassett Williams Furniture Co. in Sumter for more than 14 years. Prior employment was with the former Exide Battery Co. in Sumter.

Survivors besides his wife include three sons, Tim Martin and Marlon Tyreek Durant, both of Sumter, and Terry L. Durant of Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; a brother, Roger Durant of Sumter; four sisters, Feola Durant, Betty Durant, Beverly (Jerome) Harris and Carolyn Parrott, all of Sumter; an adopted sister, Sardora Nicole Durant of Sumter; an uncle, Pinkney Brunson of Pinewood; three aunts, Johnnie Mae Colclough of Sumter and Louise Prosser and Sallie Rhames, both of Richmond, Va.; a mother-in-law, Rovenia Grant of Sumter; three sisters-in-law; five brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Durant; a sister-in-law, Jean Durant; and a niece, Stephanie Durant.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Grace Cathedral Church with Apostle Sammy C. Smith, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Dr. Leon Winn and R.R. Cooper. Burial will be in Calvary Baptist Church cemetery in Pinewood.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 22 Lakeside Drive, Sumter.

Job's Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

PERRY J. BONAPART

PHILADELPHIA -- Mr. Perry Joseph Bonapart, 79, widower of Jennie Beatrice Bonapart departed this life on Monday, July 26, 2004, in Philadelphia.

He was born Dec. 12, 1924, in Orangeburg, S.C., a son of the late Jeremiah and Rosa Lee Bonapart.

Services will be announced by Sumter Funeral Service Inc.

HUGH E. McCOY

BISHOPVILLE -- Hugh Eugene "Gene" McCoy, 100, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

He was a native Lee County farmer who was very proud of being the world's largest producer of okra from 1950 to 1973. He was blessed with a large, loving extended family and many longtime friends.

Survivors include two sons, John McCoy of Greenville, N.C., and Gene McCoy Jr. of Indian Harbour Beach, Fla.; three sisters, Mrs. Ada McElveen of Lynchburg, Mrs. Maida Sandel of Columbia and Mrs. Lucile Welsh of Clinton, N.C.; a brother, Emil McCoy of Pageland; five grandchildren, Allyson Hirsh of Myrtle Beach, Phillip McCoy of French Polynesia, Sandra McCoy of Satellite Beach, Fla., Susan McCoy (Mrs. George Allred) of Indialantic, Fla., and Hugh Eugene "Skip" McCoy III of Indian Harbour Beach, Fla.; and three great-grandchildren, Connor Hugh Eugene McCoy IV and Killian McCoy of Indian Harbour Beach, Fla., and Alanna Estelle McCoy of French Polynesia.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Bethany Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends immediately following the graveside service.

CHARLIE WRIGHT

Mr. Charlie Wright, 77, of 7210 Saxon Road, Rembert, died Saturday, July 24, 2004.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Union Baptist Church in Rembert. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Haile's Funeral Home of Camden is in charge of arrangements.

HERBERT J. BURGESS

Herbert James Burgess, age 61, beloved husband of 38 years to Ann C. Hitch Burgess, died Sunday, July 25, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Burgess was born in Baltimore the son of the late Russal Woodrow and Goldie James Burgess. He was a U.S. Air Force retired master sergeant with 26 years of service, serving during the Vietnam era. He worked for the South Carolina Department of Corrections in Turbeville. He was a beloved husband and father. He was of the Lutheran faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife of Sumter are a son, Paul Andrew Burgess and his wife, Joanne Leigh, of Anserson Air Force Base, Guam; two daughters, Rayna Jane Steele and her husband, Bruce Allan Steele, of Ft. Drum, N.Y., and Tara Ann Moore and her husband, Joe Edward Moore Jr., of Dalzell; a brother, Raymond Burgess of Sykesville, Md; three sisters, Goldie Coleman of Gibbsonburg, Ohio, Dorothy Fisher of Sykesville and Pearl Harnish of Manchester, Md.; 10 grandchildren, Staci Cahill, Lisa Moore, Thomas Smith, Alex Adsuara, Bruce Steele II, Christina Burgess, Anthony Burgess, James Moore, Joe Edward Moore III and Camilyn Corley; and a niece, Susan Cohen and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John Thomas.

A memorial service with full military honors will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at the Chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with Chaplain Walter Bean officiating.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home for the arrangements.

ELIZA JANE P. BELSER

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Mrs. Eliza Jane Pugh Belser, of 3118 Wolcott Ave., passed away Thursday, July 29, 2004, at Randallstown Center, Randallstown, Md.

She was born Dec. 20, 1905, in Sumter County.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at 248 E. Red Bay Road, Sumter.

Funeral service is incomplete and will be announced later by Community Funeral Home of Sumter.

ROSA MAE D. WALKER

LYNCHBURG -- Funeral service for Mrs. Rosa Mae Dickey Walker will be 1 p.m. Saturday in the Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter. Burial will be in Goodman cemetery in Lynchburg directed by Bacote-Eaddy Funeral Home of Timmonsville.

Mrs. Walker died Friday, July 23, 2004.

She was born in Sumter County, a daughter of the late Leonus and Ida Keels Dickey. She was a faithful member of the St. Mark Freewill Baptist Church, where she served as president of the Willing Workers Club, secretary of the Pastor's Aid Club, secretary and treasurer of the Baptist Union Association, vice president of the senior choir and secretary of the Community Gospel Singers.

She was married to the late Mr. L.J. Walker and was also preceded in death by a daughter, two brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include seven children, Mary (Alfred) Shaw of Baltimore, Eddie (Deloris) Walker of Lawton, Okla., Esau (Maryann) Walker of Sumter, Jacob Walker, Ramon Walker and David (Annette) Walker, all of Lynchburg, and Annie (Jimmie) Harvin of Sumter; two brothers, Leo (Carolyn) and Leon (Alice) Dickey, all of Baltimore; four sisters, Ida (Charles) Mills of Lynchburg, Evelyn (Wylie) Pendergrass, Kathleen Fullard and Mary Fullard of Baltimore; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family is receiving friends at 4460 Letha Lane, Lynchburg.

Visitation will be held at noon Saturday in the church prior to the service.

ALSTON NIMMONS

SUMMERTON -- Alston Herbert "Al" Nimmons, 80, husband of Carolyn Kilpatrick Nimmons, died Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at Lexington Medical Center.

Born Sept. 8, 1923, in Anderson, he was a son of the late Furman and Mary Hulme Nimmons. He was a retired private investigator, a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving besides his wife of Summerton are a daughter, Sandra Watt and husband, Dean, of Anderson; two sons, Michael Nimmons and wife, Jean, of Anderson and Jerry Nimmons of Anderson; a stepson, Michael Cochran of Conway; a sister, Dorothy Bolton of Anderson; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sullivan-King Mortuary in Anderson with a visitation from 1 to 2 p.m.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

Memorials may be made to Summerton Baptist Church, P.O. Box 98, Summerton, SC, or to a charity of one's choice.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning is in charge of the arrangements.
