HENRY BROWN

Henry Brown, 58, died July 28, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born April 7, 1946, in Sumter, he was a son of Mary Murray Brown and the late Thomas Brown.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 5605 Ray Brown Drive, Sumter, SC 29154.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

JULIA MAE D. BOWDEN

Julia Mae Durant Bowden died Saturday, July 24, 2004, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

Born in Aynor, on Sept. 24, 1954, she was the daughter of the late Louise Gaskin and Albert Moore. She was affiliated with the Jehovah's Witnesses. She was a devoted mother and grandmother until her death.

Surviving are two sons, Willie Andrew Russ and Christopher James Russ of Sumter; two daughters, Melissa Russ and DeShaunda Russ of Sumter; four brothers, Anthony Brand and Tyrone Brand of Sumter; Charlie Gaskin of Queens, N.Y., and Willie Durant of Germany; four sisters, Linda Wilson, Sandra Wells, Valerie Brand of Sumter and Pansy Gasque of Middletown, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; three special nieces, Patricia Gasque, Jennifer Gaether and Ethel Gasque, all of Middletown, N.Y.; a special friend, Joe Taylor; and a host of nieces, nephews, special relatives and friends.

Her mother and father and a brother, James Conyers, preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today in the Chapel of Scriven Funeral Home with the Rev. Levern McKenny, pastor of The Love Center Nondenominational Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Bradford cemetery.

Pallbearers will be nephews and friends of the family.

Floral bearers will be nieces and friends of the family.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Melissa Russ, 350 Harmony Court, Apt. 41.

Scriven Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

MEGAN ANNE BEVAN

MAYESVILLE -- Megan Anne Bevan, 46, wife of Darryl J. Hatheway, died Thursday, July 29, 2004, at the McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, after an extended illness with cancer.

Born in Charlotte, N.C., she was a daughter of Louise Dabbs Bevan and the late John M. Bevan.

Upon graduating from Swarthmore College in 1980, Megan joined the staff of National Geographic, beginning as a writer-researcher in educational media and then in educational films. She came to National Geographic Television in 1984 as a senior scriptwriter for the newly launched National Geographic Explorer series and was quickly promoted to associate producer for Explorer's host studio shoots.

Known not only for her personal integrity, but also as an embodiment of the National Geographic institutional ethos, Megan was the logical choice to create, then direct Explorer's Research Department from 1986 to 1990. In 1991, she took over management of Explorer studio production, a complex job involving studio production between Washington, D.C. and New York, directing a crew of directors, script writers, and set designers.

She was promoted to vice president for all National Geographic broadcast and syndicated series which included numerous series domestically and extensive international distribution in a period of worldwide expansion for National Geographic Television. Megan became an integral part of the programming team that developed the schedule line-up for the launch of the National Geographic Channel, now one of the fastest growing cable channels in the U.S. market.

Besides her husband and mother, Megan is survived by two stepsons, Dylan and Nigel Hatheway, and a stepdaughter, Colette Beers; two sisters, Brenda Bevan Remmes and her husband, Bill, of the Salem Black River community and Elizabeth Bevan and her husband, Dan Clodfelter, of Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, John Bevan Jr. and his wife, Kathryn, of Great Falls, Va.; and six nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Salem Black River Presbyterian Church, Mayesville.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. today at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the Bevan home on Brick Church Road, Mayesville.

Memorials may be made to Salem Black River cemetery Association in care of Mrs. John Wilson, 81 Nash St., Sumter, SC 29150; to the Brick Church Building Fund in care of the Treasurer, 26 W. Sumter St., Mayesville, SC 29104; or to the Bevan Scholarship Fund at Eckerd College, St. Petersburg, FL 33733.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St., Sumter, is in charge of the arrangements.

ELIZABETH ALLEN

Sarah Elizabeth "Lib" Nelson Allen, 83, widow of Herbert Richard Allen, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Edgar Nelson and the late Floride Oliver Plowden. Mrs. Allen was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Dr. Herbert Richard Allen Jr. and wife, Jill, of Clarkesville, Va., and Robert Steven Allen and wife, Mary, of Greenville; a daughter, Elizabeth "Libby" Newton and husband, Bill, of Tampa, Fla.; and six grandchildren, Aaron Newton, Emily Newton, Richard Allen, Sarah Allen, Daniel Allen and Katharine Allen.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Sumter cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Louis D. Jamison officiating.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Memorials may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 211 Alice Drive, Sumter, SC 29150 or to a charity of one's choice.

MARY P. WASHINGTON

Mary P. Washington, age 85, died Thursday, July 29, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born May 11, 1919, in Sumter County, she was the daughter of the late Fannie Davis Scriven and stepdaughter of Johnson Scriven.

The family will receive friends at her home, 34 Lakeside Drive.

Services will be announced by Scriven Funeral Home of Sumter.

HOWARD SPANN

Mr. Howard Spann, of 230 Manhattan Ave., died Friday, July 30, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Family and friends will be received at the home of his mother, Mrs. Queen Grady, 2325 Four Bridge Road.

Funeral services are incomplete at this time.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

LIZ R. ROBERSON

BISHOPVILLE -- Liz R. Roberson, wife of Bobby M. Roberson Sr., died Friday, July 30, 2004, at the Regency Hospital in Florence, after a long illness.

Born Aug. 2, 1931, in Coward, she was a daughter of the late Albert Rogers and the late Bessie Sibbett Rogers. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, a member of the Morning Circle and treasurer of the United Methodist Women for many years. She was a retired surgical nurse, having worked at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning and Lee County Memorial Hospital in Bishopville.

Liz will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. Her friendly disposition and caring nature endeared her to all ages, young and old. Her grandchildren were her hearts delight. They spent countless hours with precious "Mema."

Liz enjoyed various activities, especially bridge and shanghi groups. She was a valued member of the American Legion Auxiliary, serving as treasurer for many years.

Survivors include two daughters, Susan Tomlinson and her husband, David, of Kingstree and Sandra Coughlin and her husband, Kevin, of Atlanta, Ga.; two sons, Bobby Martin "Marty" Roberson Jr. and his wife, Gayle, of Columbia and James David Roberson and his wife, Cindy, of Bishopville; six grandchildren, Jason Tomlinson, Lauren Tomlinson, Stacey Tomlinson, Jamie Roberson, Jill Roberson, and Jesse Roberson; four step-grandchildren, Leslie Coughlin, Michael Coughlin, Ashley Knight and Matthew Knight; a sister, Dorothy R. Pate of Coward; and a brother, Joe Rogers of Coward.

She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Michael "Mike" Roberson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethlehem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ken Phelps officiating.

Burial will be in the Bethlehem United Methodist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home.

MARIAM SESSION

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Mariam "Mae" Session died July 27, 2004, in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Albert Wright and Marie Wright.

Survivors include two brothers, Leon Wright of Sumter and Raymond Wright of New Jersey; and two sisters, Flossie Wright Littles of Sumter and Delores Wright Brooks of Columbia.

Funeral services will be held Monday in Brooklyn, N.Y. Burial will be held in Brooklyn.

GLADYS C. DEW

Gladys Corrine Dew, 91, died Thursday, July 29, 2004, at a local nursing center.

Services will be announced by Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter.

HENRY BROWN

Henry Brown, 58, son of Mary Murray Brown and the late Thomas Brown Sr., died Wednesday, July 28 at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born April 7, 1946, in Sumter County, he attended the Sumter County Public Schools of Rafting Creek, graduating in 1965 from Ebenezer High School. As a young adult, he moved to Brooklyn, New York where he was employed by Miller Iron Works. His work projects included installing stairs at the World Trade Center. After returning home, he was employed by Furman High School, followed by Crescent Tools, currently known as Crescent-xcelite Division of Cooper Industries Incorporated.

In addition to his mother, his memory will be cherished by one son, Farion Brown (Yucari); four grandchildren, Kenneth Lavell Kellog, Farion Dominique Brown, Olivia Brown and Janessa Brown; two brothers, Herman Brown (Frances) and Thomas Brown, Jr. (Stephanie); two aunts, Louise Brown and Lanie Brown; adored nieces, SaRoni Loyd (Perry) and Chantelle Loyd); special family members, India Brown, Elease James, Velma Riddy and Addie Holmes; close friends, Cathy Hobby, Raymond Ridgeway and Henry Davis; and a host of niece, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a son, Orlando Brown.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Wayman Chapel AME Church with the Rev. Laddie N. Howard officiating.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 5605 Ray Brown Road, Sumter.

Job's Mortuary, Inc., 312 S. Main St., Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.
