ALVI T. TWING Jr.

GULF SHORES, Ala. -- Alvi Tabor Twing Jr., 80, former resident of Camden, born Nov. 13, 1923, son of the late Alvi Tabor Twing Sr. and Alcenia Fenimore Twing, died July 30, 2004, at South Baldwin Regional Medical Center in Foley, Ala., after a brief illness.

He was a civil engineer graduate of Lafayette College. He was a World War II Naval officer, having served in the Pacific, followed by a 30 year career in Wilmington, Del., and Camden with E.I. DuPont as a quality control engineer. After his retirement, he served several years as past chairman of the S.C. National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Surviving are his two daughters, Nancy Twing Bryant and husband, David, of South Port, N.C., and Pamela Twing West and husband, Alex, of Sumter; his two sons, Alvi Tabor Twing III of Enid, Okla., and Dr. Stephen Wainwright Twing and wife, Christina, of Frostburg, Md.; a stepson, Donald Todd Baker and wife, Jeannette, of Flagstaff, Ariz.; a sister, Peggy Twing Simson and husband, Jim, of Gulf Shores, Ala.; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Mr. Twing was predeceased by his first wife, Marjorie Ann Mason Twing of Buffalo, N.Y., and by his second wife, Rhoda Ann Duddleston Baker Twing of St. Petersburg, Fla.

A private family memorial service was held in Gulf Shores.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be made to Grace Episcopal Church, Lyttleton Street, Camden.

ROBERT E. CAGLE

MOUNT GILEAD, N.C. -- Robert Edward Cagle, 54, husband of Linda McCaskill Cagle, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.

A native of Montgomery County, he was the son of the late Daniel James and Ruth Dunlap Cagle.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Union Grove Baptist Church, Seagrove, N.C., with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Phillips Funeral Home.

The family is being served by Phillips Funeral Home of Star, N.C.

FRANCIS CHANEY Jr.

Francis "Frank" Chaney Jr., 57, died Aug. 4, 2004, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center.

Born Feb. 23, 1947, in Sumter, he was a son of Estelle Ballard Chaney and the late Francis Chaney Sr. He was a faithful member of St. Jude Catholic Church and was a 1967 graduate of St. Jude High School. He also attended Sacred Heart College, Wichita, Kan. A sergeant in the United States armed forces, he served two years in Vietnam. He was employed by Sumter Petroleum Co. as a truck driver.

Survivors besides his mother include one sister, Celestine (Mitchell) Jackson of Sumter; three brothers, Melvin J. Chaney, Charles C. Chaney and Donald Chaney, all of Sumter; two aunts, Dorothy B. Robinson of Sumter and Wilhimena (Walter) Joyner of Philadelphia; two uncles, Salters (Gertrude) Ballard of Sumter and John Chaney of Florida; nieces, Natasha, Ebony, Michelle, Celena, LaStelle and Sherena; nephews, Keith, Travis, Franco and Donald Jr.; former wife, Mary Davis Chaney; a special friend, Nora Anthony, and her children, Robert and Lucy, all of Sumter; a host of other aunts and uncles of Bessemer, Ala.; loving relatives and friends.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Shervy Lee Chaney.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Jude Catholic Church, 611 W. Oakland Ave., Sumter, with Father Alistair McKay.

Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 232 Purdy St., Sumter.

Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

GEORGIA MAE J. DURANT

Georgia Mae Jackson Durant, widow of John Durant Jr., died Aug. 5, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born March 29, 1935, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Rueben and Janie LeGrant Jackson.

The family will receive friends at 10 Republic St., Mayesville.

Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. of Sumter.

LINDA MARIE C. HUMPHRIES

Linda Marie Cook Humphries, age 55, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Bullock Funeral Home.

JANETT C. JOHNSON

The late Mr. Tal Canty of Summerton and Mrs. Janie E. Fleming Canty of Turbeville united in Sumter to have a child brought to them by God, Mrs. Janett "Peeny" Canty Johnson, on April 29, 1949.

Mrs. Johnson found eternal rest at 7:45 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

She received her education in the public schools of Sumter County and was a 1967 graduate of Lincoln High School. After graduation, she attended Tuomey Hospital Nursing School and graduated as a licensed practical nurse. She later attended Sumter Area Technical for other professional courses. She was baptized at Bethlehem Baptist Church. She was a licensed practical nurse at Tuomey Hospital from November 1971 to January 1997, where she worked mainly in the psychiatric field for more than 20 years and other various nursing jobs while employed at Tuomey. She also worked at Hopewell Nursing Home part-time, helping to fund her eldest son's way through South Carolina State University. She continued to work until diabetes partially claimed her eyesight. While retired, she still aided her youngest son through Morris College. Her mission was accomplished when he graduated in May 2004. At that point, she knew everything was alright.

Janett departed with precious memories to be cherished by her husband, Joseph W. "Jody" Johnson Sr. of Sumter; two loving sons, Tal J. "T.J." Johnson Sr. of Columbia and Joseph W. "Joey" Johnson Jr. of the home; a daughter-in-law, Maxine Daniels Johnson of Columbia; two grandchildren that she loved dearly, BriAna "Bri" Cheri Johnson and Tal "Tre" Johnson Jr., both of Columbia; her twin sister, Annette C. Johnson of Sumter; nieces and nephews on the Canty, Fleming and Johnson sides of the family; one goddaughter, Brenda Choice of Sumter; two godsons, Donta Ingram and Mickell Choice, both of Sumter; two god-sisters, Bertie Lou Thomas and Elonda Maxfield, both of Sumter; two uncles, Leroy Fleming of Sumter and Curtis Harrison of Florence; five aunts, Elouise Harrison of Florence, Rebecca Ingram and Bonita Fleming, both of Sumter, Ethel Shaw of Washington, D.C., and Doretha Coley of Baltimore; a devoted family friend, Cassie Bones of Sumter; and a host of cousins and dear friends that are deeply grieved by her passing.

Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by a sister, Rosetta Canty, and a brother, David Canty.

Services for Mrs. Johnson will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Reid Chapel AME Church, Dibert Street, with the Rev. Randolph Black officiating, assisted by Pastor Eliza Black. Burial will follow in the Hillside Memorial Park.

The funeral procession will leave the home, 1049 Acres Ave., at 1:30 p.m.

The family is receiving friends at the home, 1049 Acres Ave.

ALEXANDER SINKLER

Mr. Alexander Sinkler entered eternal rest on Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at his home in Charlotte, N.C.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sept. 20, 1967, he was the son of Mr. William Sinkler and Mrs. Gladys Tindal Sinkler. He attended public schools in Harlem, N.Y., where he graduated from Martin Luther King High School. His compassion for electronics and reading led him to his career as an electrician and construction worker.

Alexander was affectionately known to many as "Blue Eyes" because of the adorable blue eyes that God granted him. He was also known for his adorable laugh and smile that brightened everyone's day.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving mother, Mrs. Gladys Elizabeth Tindal Sinkler of Sumter; three brothers, Kenneth Sinkler and his wife, Juanita, of Jacksonville, Fla., Theodore Sinkler and Bobby Sinkler, both of Harlem, N.Y.; one sister, Donna Sinkler of Harlem, N.Y.; special cousins, Richard and Shirley James; one aunt, Margaret of South Carolina; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Community Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry W. Barnes officiating.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

ELLA MAE M. BROWN

NEW ZION -- Ella Mae McKenzie Brown, 90, widow of Jaris Brown, died Aug. 3, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born May 2, 1914, in the New Zion section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Ezekiel McKenzie and Olivia Rose McKenzie.

Survivors include three sons, Isiah Brown Sr. of New Zion, James Brown of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Jerry Brown of the home; six daughters, Martha (Wesley) Butler Jr., Lettie (Johnny) McDowell, both of New Zion, Louisa Butler of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Celain Jackson of Gable, Verline (Raynold) Muldrow of Sumter and Peggy (Lee Ernest) Hicks of Manning.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Howard Chapel AME, Old Manning Road, New Zion, with the Rev. Edward Roberts, pastor, officiating, the Rev. Jerome McCray presiding, assisting the Revs. Vermell Humes, Eddie Mayes and Bobby McDonald.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

GERTIE MAE J. PINKNEY

Mrs. Gertie Mae James Pinkney entered eternal rest on Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004.

Born in Clarendon County on Oct. 30, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Julius and Hattie Richburg James. She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she joined Taw Caw Baptist Church. After her marriage to Mr. Calvin Pinkney, she later joined Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully in several auxiliaries, namely the gospel choir, pulpit aide, Golden Age Ministry and the Missionary Society. She was employed by Sumter County School District 17 as a cook and Morris College.

She leaves to cherish memories six sons, Mr. John Calvin Pinkney and his wife, Mary, of Willow Grove, Pa., Joseph Pinkney and Leroy Pinkney and his wife, Mary, all of Sumter, Gerome Pinkney and his wife, Geraldine, Leon Pinkney and Sammie Lee Pinkney of Philadelphia, Pa.; three daughters, Eva Childrey and her husband, James, and Eleanor Smith of Philadelphia, Pa. and Mildred P. Rogers and her husband, James, of Darby, Pa.; one sister, Mrs. Mattie P. Walters of Summerton; 30 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Pinkney; two sons, Moses Pinkney and James Pinkney; and two daughters, Edith McDaniel and Hattie Epps.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. James Blassingame, the Rev. Shelia B. Neal, the Rev. O.J. Hannal and the Rev. Dr. W.T. Johnson.

Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.

Viewing will take place from 2:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday.

The family is receiving visitors at the home, 51 L St., Sumter, where the procession will also leave from at 1:15 p.m. Monday.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

HATTIE LEE B. BRADSHAW

GREELEYVILLE -- Hattie Lee Benjamin Bradshaw, 73, widow of Udell Bradshaw, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at Mariner Health of Sumter West.

Born May 24, 1931, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Addison Benjamin Jr. and Marie McCoy Benjamin. She was educated in the public schools of Darlington County and formerly employed by Summerton Apparel and retired from the Clarendon County Council on Aging.

Survivors include two sons, Udell (Carolyn) Bradshaw and Aupell (Debbie) Bradshaw, both of Greensboro, N.C.; two daughters, Debra A. Bradley of Greeleyville and Deloris (Charlie) Selvie of Marietta, Ga.; one brother, Wilken (Carolyn) Benjamin; three sisters, Dorothy McCoy of Hartsville, Mollie (Horace) McPhail of Lanham, Md. and Fannie (Johnny) Gibson of Baltimore, Md.; eight grandchildren; special nieces, Sarah Pinkney and Alice Brailey of Columbia; and cousins, Rosa Carr, Rosa Cantey and Linda Pressley, all of Manning.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Jean Benjamin, and a sister, Willie Mae Benjamin.

The remains will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Pine Grove AME Church, Old River Road, Greeleyville, with the Rev. Francis Gathers, assisting the Rev. Eliza E. Black. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.

Pallbearers will be the men of Pine Grove AME Church.

The funeral procession will leave at 2:30 p.m. from 1525 Bradshaw Road, Greeleyville.

The family will receive friends at 1525 Bradshaw Road, Greeleyville.

JOHN E. THOMAS

John E. Thomas, 78, husband of 54 years to Helen D. Thomas, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.

Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late John S. Thomas and the late Thelma Holliday Furse. He was a member of Wise Drive Baptist Church. He was retired from the S.C. State Board of Financial Institutions as the assistant director. He was active in the Elks Lodge, serving as past exalted ruler. He was a Mason, a member of the Omar Shrine Temple, active and past captain of the Omar Color Guard, a member of the Royal Order of Jesters No. 113 Santee Shrine, a member of the Gamecock Shrine Club and Helping Hands, a member of the Eastern Star, and an active member of the Billikins Social Club. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and also served in the U.S. Air Force.

Survivors besides his wife include two sons, John A. Thomas and Richard E. Thomas, both of Sumter; two granddaughters, Kristin A. Thomas of Hartsville and Hannah M. Thomas of Sumter; and two sisters, Billie Bradham of Augusta, Ga., and Helen Owen of Florence.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Dargan Thomas.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Dearld Sterling officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

Pallbearers will be James Barrineau Sr., Dale Harkins, Sam Anderson, Eugene Machen, Burl Alligood and Neil Cobb.

Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Marshall, Dr. Phil Brandt, Dr. Hugh Stoddard and Billy Edgeworth.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Greenville Shriners Hospital, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605-4277.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.
