NELLIE S. MAYFIELD

Nellie Irene Sheppard Mayfield, age 98, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, at the Eastern Star Home in Sumter, under Hospice care.

She was born in rural Simpsonville, the fourth of seven children of Hester Hall and Henry Vance Sheppard. She moved to Washington, D.C., and worked for the FBI during World War II while married to Herman D.L. Duncan. She later married Ben Grogan Mayfield and moved to Asheville, N.C. He ran a weather stripping business and was an active Masonic lecturer who traveled extensively throughout the state. Later they moved to Greenville, where he continued his business and she became a traveling salesperson for Luzier's Cosmetics. She was very talented in the arts; she sang, played the piano, organ, and Hawaiian guitar; and, until she lost her sight, was an excellent ceramics artist and tatter. Nell was very active in the Order of Eastern Star. She was a past worthy matron of her chapter in Simpsonville, a district deputy grand matron and was the grand representative to North Carolina. She had been a resident of the Eastern Star home since 1988, where until her health failed she was often called upon to plan, organize, and run special events. An active Christian all her life, she was a member of Welcome Baptist Church in Greenville and Northside Memorial Baptist Church in Sumter and taught Sunday school for more than 50 years.

She is survived by one sister, Virginia Hodnett and her husband, Russell, of Ithaca, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Helen Sheppard of Rocky River, Ohio; three nephews, James R. Ruckman and his wife, Joan, of Sumter, Robert E. Ruckman and his wife, Gail Gavlock, of Arlington, Va., and Gerry Hodnett of Ithaca, N.Y. Also surviving are Lois Ruckman of Shinnston, W.Va., Sandra Arden and her husband, Erik, of Ithaca, N.Y., and Jean Cooke of Lakewood, Ohio; and numerous cousins disbursed throughout the United States.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Holley officiating.

Burial will be at Greenville Memorial Gardens at 4 p.m. Saturday.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m., one hour prior to service, at Bullock Funeral Home and other times at the residence of her nephew, Jim Ruckman.

Memorials may be sent to The Eastern Star Home, 1267 N. Main St., Sumter, SC 29153.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter for the arrangements.

LIZZIE MAE B. FLEMING

Mrs. Lizzie Mae Barno Fleming departed this life on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born June 27, 1949, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of Mr. Jeremiah Barno and Mrs. Elizabeth McFadden Barno of Easton, Pa. She received her education in the public schools of Sumter and also attended Central Carolina Technical College, where she obtained an associate's degree in industrial technology. "Lizzie Mae," as she was affectionately called, was a member of the Joshua Outreach Deliverance Temple, where Elder Margaret Richardson is the pastor.

"Lizzie Mae" leaves fond memories to be cherished and will be sadly missed by all, but especially her parents, Mr. Jeremiah and Mrs. Elizabeth McFadden Barno of Easton, Pa.; her husband, Mr. James Fleming of Sumter; four sons, Mr. Donald Barno of Easton, Pa., Mr. Tyrone (Sheryl) Barno of Winston-Salem, N.C., Mr. Antonio Fleming and Mr. Teddy Fleming, both of Sumter; three sisters, Mrs. Mary (Bobby) Robinson and Mrs. Lillie (Henry) Barno, both of Sumter, and Ms. Delores Barno of Easton, Pa.; three brothers, Gerald Barno, Gary Barno and Isaiah Barno, all of Easton, Pa.; three grandchildren; four uncles; five aunts; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and dear friends that are deeply grieved by her passing; and two special friends, Ms. Eartha Mathis and Ms. Geneva McFadden, both of Sumter.

A son, Mr. Eric Fleming, preceded her in death.

Funeral services for Mrs. Fleming will be held at 1 p.m. today at First Baptist Church, Sardinia, where the Rev. Sallie Burgess is pastor, with Elder Wayne Brunson delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Mrs. Mary and Bobby Robinson, 114 E. Bee St., Sumter.

The funeral procession will leave from the same residence at 12:15 p.m.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. is in charge of the arrangements.

WILLIAM FREEMAN

William Freeman, 76, died Aug. 13, 2004, at his residence. Freeman was born in Greensboro, N.C. Services will be announced by Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter.

WILLIAM L. WELLS

MANNING -- William Lucas "Bill" Wells, 78, widower of Bessie Earlene Leonard Wells, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 8, 1926, in the Silver community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Dewey and Ester Canty Wells. He was a former member of Friendship AME Church. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a mechanic, carpenter and brick mason. His hard work can be found on many buildings in the surrounding areas.

Survivors include one daughter, Ruth Leonard of Silver; one brother, Dewey Wells of Pinewood; one sister, Sally Crosby of New York City; three stepbrothers, Moise Pack of Columbia, Elijah Pack of New York City and Berney Green of Evergreen, N.C.; one stepsister, Queen Ester Thomas of High Point, N.C.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Sarah Doughty.

He was preceded in death by four sisters and five brothers.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ivory cemetery, Davis Station community, with the Rev. Joseph Postell officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Summerton Funeral Service and other times at the home of his daughter and granddaughter, Ruth and Bessie Leonard, 9688 Silver Road, Manning.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton is in charge of arrangements.

RUEBIN BROWN

SUMMERTON -- Ruebin Brown, 64, died Monday, Sept. 27, 2004.

He was a son of Inez B. Coutrier.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. James AME Church, Potato Creek community of Summerton, with the Rev. R.L. Brown, pastor, officiating.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

ERNEST BILLIE

PINEWOOD -- Mr. Ernest Billie, of 3233 Elliott Road, entered eternal rest at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital, Columbia, on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004.

Born in Clarendon County on April 27, 1946, he was a son of Mr. Alphonso Billie Sr. and the late Mrs. Carrie Jackson Billie. Ernest was educated in the public school system of Clarendon County and was a member of Mt. Pleasant UME Church. He moved to Thomasville, N.C., and worked for many years in the furniture industry at Thomasville Furniture Co. and later returned home to Pinewood, where he resided.

Survivors include his father, Alphonso Billie Sr. of the home, Pinewood; one son, Timothy Billie and wife, Cherlisha, of Charlotte, N.C.; three daughters, Jacqueline Skeen and husband, Eric, Cynthia Rogers and husband, Timothy, both of Charlotte, and Sabrina Billie of Lexington, N.C.; four brothers, Moses Billie of Greenville, Alphonso Billie Jr. and wife, Ruby, Henry Billie and wife, Brenda, both of Thomasville, N.C., and Isaac Billie and wife, Karen, of Bavaria, Germany; six sisters, Emma Tate and husband, Edward, of Thomasville, N.C., Susie Billie of High Point, N.C., Juanita Green and husband, the Rev. Willie, and Mildred Billie, both of Sumter, Ruth Ann Carr and husband, Spencer, of Columbia and Carrie Moore and husband, Theodore, of Pinewood; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Pleasant UME Church in Pinewood with the Rev. James O. Robinson, assisted by the Rev. Willie Green, the Rev. Jonathan Smith, Elder Roosevelt Boyd and the Rev. Lawrence Myers. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Viewing will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Community Funeral Home and the body will be placed in the church one hour before the service on Saturday.

The family is receiving visitors at the home, 3233 Elliott Road, Pinewood, where the procession will also leave from on Saturday at 12:15 p.m.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.

WARREN HOUSE Jr.

Warren "Booney" House Jr., 62, husband of Dorothy Walker House, died Sept. 27, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born July 23, 1942, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Warren House Sr. and Minnie Sue Clark House. Mr. House attended Lincoln High School. In his early years, he was employed by Georgia Pacific until his health failed. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

Survivors besides his wife include two daughters, Adrienna F. House and Minister Cynthia House (Jimmie) Golden, both of Sumter; one son, Warren House III (Victoria Sinkler) of Sumter; one sister, Georgiamae Abrams, and one brother, Sammie Lee (Ida) Gregg, both of Sumter; 10 grandchildren, Jimmie Golden Jr., Lamoshia L. Jackson, Jokettia R. Jackson, Marcellous Sumpter, Breanna Q. Jackson, Kristopher W. House, Nicole Golden, Jasmine Carter, Dawaun A. House and Alexa Blair, all of Sumter; one great-grandchild, Travion T. Jackson; two brothers-in-law, Willie Walker Jr. and James (Josephine) Walker, both of Sumter; one devoted nephew, Staff Sgt. Antwaun (Kristy) G. Abrams of Columbus, Miss.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Minnie Lee Steele and Annie Mae Watson.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Baptist Church with the Rev. L.W. Barnes, pastor, assisted by Co-Pastor E.G. Barnes, Pastor Stanley E. Hayes, Ministers A. Hill, L. Frances and James Goodman. Burial will be in Smith cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 109 Brand St., Sumter.

RUTH BELL

Ruth Bell, wife of Clarence Bradford, died Sept. 29, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born May 3, 1942, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Nathaniel Bell and Ethel Green Bell.

The family will receive friends at 415 Geddings Road, Sumter.

Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. of Sumter.

KATIE A. DWYER

Mrs. Katie Andrews Dwyer, of 208 King St., died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home.

Funeral plans are incomplete and will be announced by Community Funeral Home, 353 Manning Ave., Sumter.

THEO W. MOSS

FLORENCE -- Theo William Moss, husband of Frances Clark Moss, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at the Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Born in Columbus, Ga., on Sept. 30, 1930, he was a son of the late Eddie Moss and Mary Lou Fowler Moss.

The family will receive friends at the Moss residence of 728 Estate St., Sumter.

Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. is in charge of funeral services.

BEN G. ALDERMAN Jr.

MANNING -- Ben Geer "B.G." Alderman Jr., 65, chief summary court judge of Clarendon County, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born Jan. 4, 1939, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Ben Geer Alderman Sr. and the late Mary Jones Alderman. He was the great-grandson of David Wells and Martha Priscilla Alderman, founders of the Alcolu community. He graduated from Manning High School and Wake Forest University with a bachelor of arts in business. He was a former schoolteacher, manager of the Alderman Wood Preserving Co., owner of Geddings Hardware, and founding owner of The Alderman Agency. He served on the NBSC Manning Advisory Board, the S.C. Public Service Authority and the Santee Cooper Dams Committee as chairman. He also served on the board of the Children's Bureau of S.C. and Clarendon Memorial Hospital. Mr. Alderman was the 1999 Clarendon County Business Person of the Year, former member and past president of the Manning Rotary Club and a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award. He was a member of the Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce and the Sumter Board of Realtors. He was a member of Manning United Methodist Church.

Surviving besides his wife, Ann Taylor Alderman of Manning, are a daughter, Guerry Alderman Kirkland and husband, Dr. Keith Kirkland, of Charleston; a son, Ben Geer Alderman III and wife, Ashley, of Mt. Pleasant; three brothers, Dr. Robert L. Alderman of Roanoke, Va., David C. Alderman of Litchfield Beach and Dr. James F. Alderman of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Mary Geer Clark of Roanoke, Va.; four grandchildren, Patricia Ann Kirkland, Bailey Henry Kirkland, Mary Geer Kirkland and Ben Geer Alderman IV.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Manning United Methodist Church with the Rev. Debra Quilling and Dr. Robert Alderman officiating. Burial will follow in the Manning cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 1308 Hickory Ridge Circle.

Memorials may be made to Healing Properties, Manning United Methodist Church or Clarendon County Habitat for Humanity, all at P.O. Box 68, Manning, SC 29102.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

ANGELA McCULLOUGH

COLUMBIA -- Angela Campbell Anderson McCullough, age 41, died Monday, Sept. 27, 2004, at her residence.

Ms. McCullough was born in Landstuhl Rhernland Tpfalz, Germany, the daughter of the late Andrew and Barbara Ann Campbell. She was the manager of the Pit Stop Convenience Store.

Survivors are two sons, Jimmy Lee Anderson and his wife, Keynna, and David Michael Anderson and his wife, Uneda, all of Columbia; two brothers, William Campbell and his wife, Donna, of Bishopville and Dennis Campbell and his wife, Lisa, of Mary Esther, Fla.; one sister, Victoria Moroz of Lapalma, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Michelle Campbell of Sumter; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Roger Campbell.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Chapel of Bullock Funeral Home.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter for the arrangements.
