JOSEPH MONTGOMERY

Joseph "Dook" Montgomery, 63, husband of Frances Prescott Montgomery, died Oct. 6, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born June 8, 1941, in Sumter County, he was reared by the late Willie Montgomery Sr. and Marie Montgomery. He attended the public schools of Sumter and graduated from Lincoln High School. He worked many years as a truck driver for a local building supply company in Sumter before becoming disabled. He remained in Sumter until heaven decided it needed another angel.

Survivors include one son, Ricky Montgomery of Sumter; four brothers, Willie Montgomery, Patrick Davis and Isaiah McDuffie, all of Sumter, and Abraham McDuffie of Tampa, Fla.; four sisters, Lilly Smith of Phoenix, Ariz., Savanna Greene of Manhattan, N.Y., Mary Butler and Ruth McDuffie, both of Sumter; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Davis.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday from the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., with Bishop Jeffrey Johnson officiating, eulogist.

Burial will be in Antioch United Methodist Church cemetery, Sumter.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Floral bearers will be family and friends.

The procession will leave at 11:15 a.m. from 22 Oakview Drive, Sumter.

The family will receive friends at 22 Oakview Drive, Sumter.

Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

ELIZABETH TINDAL

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Elizabeth "Mert" Tindal, 55, widow of Willie C. Tindal, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Brooklyn Medical Center.

Born in the Rimini community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late David Gillard and Millie Ann Canty Gillard. She attended Scott's Branch High School and was employed by Goldwater Hospital.

Survivors include two sons, Alexander Tindal of Brooklyn and LeAndre (Miriam) Tindal of Atlanta; a brother, Leroy Canty (Darryl) of Wilmington, N.C.; two sisters-in-law, Roberta Tindal and Bertha Slaughter; a brother-in-law, James Tindal; four aunts, Susan Clark (James), Bertha Gayman, Annie Mae Simmons and Julia Phillips; four uncles, Aaron Canty, Boston Canty (Luvenia), Buster Bowman (Minnie Bell) and Hazel Junious; two goddaughters, Deloris Parson and Kelia Slaughters; a godson, Anthony Ragin; a host of first cousins reared as her sisters and brothers; a close friend of 35 years, Virginia Canady; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Oak's AME Church, North Santee, with the Rev. Nathaniel Bookhardt officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.

The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the home of her aunt, Julia (Lelia) Phillips, 1188 Clifton Road, Summerton.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton is in charge of arrangements.

KEVIN N. MICKENS

HIGHLAND, Calif. -- Kevin Negelle Mickens, 31, died Oct. 1, 2004, in Highland.

Born Nov. 13, 1971, in Ancon, Panama Canal Zone, he was a son of Margaret Brown Mickens and the late Robert Mickens.

The family will receive friends at the home of his grandaunt, Mamie Jackson, 609 W. Bartlette St., Sumter, SC 29150.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

IRIS MacLAUGHLIN

Iris Evelyn Kelley MacLaughlin, 77, widow of Robert George MacLaughlin, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Services will be announced by Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St., Sumter.

MERTIE H. TORREY

McCOMB, Miss. -- Mertie Hood Torrey, 69, a resident of McComb for the past three years and a former longtime resident of Sumter, S.C., died Oct. 5, 2004, at Hardy Wilson Hospital in Hazelhurst, Miss.

Born Nov. 25, 1934, in Cannon, Ga., she was a daughter of Fred and Lois Phillips.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Franklin County with the Rev. Marvin Howard officiating.

Catchings Funeral Home in McComb is in charge of arrangements.

JENNIVE THORNE

Jennive Thorne, 96, widow of Nelson M. Thorne, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, in Franklin, Wis.

Services will be announced by Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St., Sumter.

IRIS MacLAUGHLIN

Iris Evelyn Kelley MacLaughlin, 77, widow of Robert George MacLaughlin, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Ashtabula, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Lyle Myron Kelley and Freda Dorsey.

Mrs. MacLaughlin was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church and was a retired real estate agent.

Surviving are one son, Scott K. MacLaughlin and wife Allyson of Sumter; two daughters, Deborah VanAntwerp and husband Dan of Doylestown, Pa., and Cynthia McKenley and husband Wayne of Newburgh, N.Y.; one sister, Lois Kreisher of Scottsdale, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Andrew Basham officiating.

Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of her son, 1101 Meadowcroft Drive.

WILLIAM HILL

William F. "Skeeter" Hill, 59, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004.

Born in Sumter, he was the son of the late J.C. Hill and the late Mary Liza Fleming Hill.

He was a member of the True Way Holiness Church and was formerly employed by Southeast Paint and Body Works.

Survivors include two sons, Willie Hill and Jamie Hill, both of Sumter; a grandson, Willie Hill Jr.; two brothers, Raymond Hill of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Charles Hill of Sumter; and a special sister, Brenda Cribb of Sumter.

He was preceded in death by a brother, John Wesley Hill.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in Green Acres cemetery with the Rev. Kevin Cribb and the Rev. Donnie Collins officiating.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home.

KATHRYN W. ATKINSON

Kathryn W. Atkinson, 77, wife of James P. "J.P." Atkinson died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Lee County, she was the daughter of the late Arthur J. Windham and the late Ella Mae Nesbitt Windham.

She was a member of Faith Baptist Church.

Survivors besides her husband include a son, H. Wayne Atkinson of Sumter; a daughter, Kathy Couch and her husband, George, of Sumter; two grandchildren, Joseph Sapp and James Sapp; and two sisters, Betty Welch of New Zion and Lillie Welch of Sumter.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank Windham, Harvey Windham, and Ernest Windham.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Victor VanRas and the Rev. Terry Byrd officiating.

Burial will be in Sumter cemetery.

Pallbearers will be John Thomas, Anthony Harper, Charlie Galligan, Jimmy Welch, Whit Newman and Jesse Norfleet.

Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Faith Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Couch, 22 Glenwood Drive.

JUNIOUS ABRAM

Junious Abram, 84, died Oct. 3, 2004, at National Health Center of Sumter.

Born Jan. 8, 1920, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Senious Abrams and Delia Pinkney Abrans.

He received his education in the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age in joined Ebenezer Presbyterian Church (USA), Dalzell.

Survivors include one brother, Elijah Abrams of Sumter; three sisters, Mollie (James) Mickens of Irvington, N.J., Rosa (Richard) Blanding of Sumter, and Katie Rembert of Summerton; and one sister-in-law, Thomasina Abrams of Sumter.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, William Arthur, Richard and Edward Abrams; and three sisters, Dora Abrams, Mary Abrams and Thelma D. Jenkins.

The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Monday.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday from Ebenezer Presbyterian Church (USA), 4620 Queen Chapel Road, Dalzell.

Officiating minister is the Rev. Dr. Lutrelle D. Rainey Sr., pastor, eulogist, assisted by Elder Susanna J. Isaac.

Burial will be in Ebenezer Presbyterian Churchyard cemetery, Dalzell.

Pallbearers will be family and friends. Floral bearers will be family and friends.

The procession will leave at 1:15 p.m. from the home of his sister, Rosa Blanding, 1070 Habitat Drive, Sumter.
