BROOKS THOMAS

Brooks Leon Thomas, 20, died Oct. 5, 2004, at Lieber Correctional Center, Ridgeville.

Born Feb. 20, 1984, in Sumter, he was a son of David White-Bey and Selenia Thomas McKnight and stepson of Fredrick Thomas McKnight and Sheila Boykin.

He attended the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age, he accepted Christ and attended New Life and Jehovah Baptist Churches. He enjoyed basketball, football and boxing.

Survivors besides his parents and stepparents include his grandparents, Mary Frances June Thomas of Sumter and David Williams of Greensboro, N.C., Peggy and Alphonzo Young Sr. and Olivia Brock, all of Sumter; two sisters, Brittany Brewer and Denniero McKnight of Sumter; seven brothers, Brandon Thomas, Rayshawn Brewer, Dimone McKnight, all of Sumter, Quentin D. Moore of Ridgeville, Raheem White-Bey, Stephen White-Bay, both of Baltimore, and John Rogers of Columbia; one nephew, Malik Frierson; seven aunts; nine uncles; three special cousins; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Brooks and Hattie Mae June; a grandmother, Janie Mae Harvin; grandfather, Robert White; one uncle; and one aunt.

A wake will be held today from 7 to 8 p.m. at Job's Mortuary Inc., 312 S. Main St., Sumter, 29150.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 3 p.m.

The body will be placed in the church Monday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church.

Officiating ministers are the Rev. Dr. Larry C. Weston, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Richard R. Baxter.

Burial will be in Walker cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the home of his grandmother, Mary Frances June Thomas, 1120 Flamingo Drive, Sumter, 29150.

Job's Mortuary Inc., 312 S. Main St., Sumter, is in charge of arrangements.

BERTHA L. CROOM

Mrs. Bertha L. Weathers Croom, wife of the late Lewis Croom, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2004, at Mariner Healthcare System of Sumter.

Born in Sumter County on Oct. 13, 1923, she was the daughter and youngest child of Louise Weathers. Bertha attended the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age, she joined High Hills AME Church and later became a member of the Greater Refuge Temple in New York City, where she served as an usher until she relocated to Sumter in 1990. She worked as a nursing assistant at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City and as a laboratory technician at Harlem Hospital. She was united in marriage to Lewis Croom in July 1951.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mazie Williams and Epsie Washington; and one brother, Jimmy Weathers.

Survivors are three daughters, Delores Choice of Bronx, N.Y., Stephanie Croom (Dwight) Williams of Tacoma, Wash., and Wendy M. Croom of New York City; four grandchildren, Rodney Choice of Washington, D.C., Holly Croom of Dalton, Mass., Andrew S.P. Williams and Rachael Williams, both of Tacoma, Wash.; and two great-grandchildren, Desiree and Monet Croom of Dalton, Mass.

Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at High Hills AME Church, Dalzell, with the Rev. M. Charmaine Ragin, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Laddie N. Howard, the Rev. Arthur R. Williams, the Rev. Linda Richbow and the Rev. Jeffrey Wilson.

The remains will be placed in the church from 2:30 p.m. until the hour of service.

Burial will be in the Wayman Chapel AME Church cemetery in Stateburg.

The funeral procession will leave at 2:30 p.m. from the residence of her niece, Marie Wiley, 5480 Keith Road, Sumter.

The family will also receive friends at 5480 Keith Road.

Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

IMOGENE TURNER

Imogene Scott Turner, 69, widow of Saul S. Turner, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Services will be announced by Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St.

J.L. HARRISON

TURBEVILLE -- J.L. Harrison, 65, husband of Ethel Goodman Harrison, died Oct. 10, 2004, at 2102 Plantation Village, Apt. 6-B, Turbeville.

Born Oct. 31, 1938, in the Turbeville section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Pearl McDowell and Sam Harrison.

The family will receive friends at his residence, 2102 Plantation Village, Apt. 6-B, Turbeville.

Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

JENNIVE THORNE

DALZELL -- Jennive "Ma" W. Lanham Thorne, 96, widow of Nelson M. Thorne, passed away Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, in Franklin, Wis.

Born in Queene, Upshur County, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Nona Mae Lanham.

She was a longtime resident of Dalzell and a member of Dalzell United Methodist Church. She was also a former resident of Alterra Sterling House, Sumter.

She was a wonderful lady and loved by many. She will be sadly missed.

Surviving are loving grandsons, Richard D. Hall and wife Jan of Tillar, Ak., Robert E. Hall and wife Juanita of Franklin, Wis., and John Thorne of Florida; loving granddaughters, Debra A. Hicks of Dalzell and Sharon Smith of Maryland; a grandson, William Hicks Jr. of Shaw Air Force Base; nine great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and two loving sisters, Nellie Linger of Ohio and Mabel Sealover of Maryland; special friends Ruth Anderson, George and Margaret Hoffman and Louella Stanley and many other relatives and friends.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Richard Hall, Robert Hall, William, Travis and Justin Hicks, and Paul E. LeValley.

Honorary pallbearers will be Michael J. Hall, George Hoffman and Doug Linton.

Memorials may be made to Dalzell United Methodist Church, PO Box 35, Dalzell, SC 29040.

CLARENCE SINGLETON

Mr. Clarence Alexander Singleton, 39, died Oct. 6, 2004, in Yonkers, N.Y. Born in Sumter County, he was the son of Sarah Richbow Singleton and the late John Singleton Jr.

He was an artist and worked in various locations in Yonkers.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at noon from the Willow Grove AME Church, Horatio. The family will receive friends at the home of his aunt, Francis Dinkins, 6750 Light House Lane, Rembert. Interment will follow immediately in the churchyard cemetery.

Williams Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of these arrangements.

CLIFTON GAINEY

Clifton Gainey, 36, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004.

Services will be announced by Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St., Sumter.

JERVEY BROWN Jr.

COLUMBIA -- Jervey "JT" Brown Jr., 76, husband of Hattie Mae Chestnut Brown, died Oct. 9, 2004, at Richland Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 27, 1927, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Jervey Sr. and Adline Nelson Brown.

The family will receive friends at his home, 154 Keels Road, Sumter.

Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

THOMAS E. HARRIS

MANNING -- Thomas Edgar Harris, age 79, of Manning, died Oct. 8, 2004.

Born in Modoc, Ark., he was a son of the late James Casey Harris and Nannie Carroll Cox Harris.

Mr. Harris was predeceased by his wife, Elise K. Harris.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Meares Funeral Home, Mullins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Meares Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Riverside cemetery.

Mr. Harris is survived by three sons, Jerry Harris of Burbank, Wash., Walter Thomas Harris of Salt Lake City and Cecil Harris of Elko, Nev.; and two brothers, Carl E. Harris of Lehi, Utah, and Robert Eugene Harris.

Meares Funeral Home of Mullins is serving the family of Mr. Harris.

ROBERT JACKSON Jr.

Robert Jackson Jr., 65, husband of Ruth Bowen Jackson, died Oct. 11, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born March 10, 1939, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Robert Jackson Sr. and Willie Mae Pearson Jackson.

The family will receive friends at his home, 2755 Burnt Gin Road, Wedgefield.

Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

IMOGENE S. TURNER

Imogene Scott Turner, 69, widow of Saul S. Turner, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Turbeville, she was a daughter of the late Charles E. Scott and the late Inez Gibbons Scott Barkley. Mrs. Turner was a member of New Start Baptist Church and was retired from Pinewood Manufacturing Co.

Surviving are two sons, Keith Turner Sr. and wife Paula and John M. Turner and wife Patricia of Sumter; two daughters, Faye L. Turner of Sumter and Shirley J. Price and husband Charles of Niceville, Fla.; an adopted daughter, Amy Scott and husband Jimmy Scott Jr. of Sumter; a brother, Charles Scott of Sumter; two sisters, Myrtle Bynum of Sumter and Corrine Lynn of Houston; a stepsister, Hazel Turner of Sumter; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Dale Turner and the Rev. G.W. Harrell officiating.

Burial will be in Calvary Church of the Nazarene cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Keith Turner Jr., Steven Turner, Jimmy Scott Jr., Greg Pittman, Tray Evans and Scotty Ray Geddings.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of her daughter, Faye Turner, 4295 Lisa Drive.
