Popie Coleman Harps
May 16, 2007

Popie Helen Coleman Harps, wife of the late Col. Joseph F. Harps, died on May 16, 2007. Born in Newberry County, she was a daughter of the late Patrick Gary Coleman and Popie Webb Coleman. She was a l941 graduate of Furman University.
She is survived by her son, Joseph Patrick Harps, daughter-in-law Ellenor McCaughrin Harps, granddaughter Sidney Hesley Harps, and grandson Patrick McCaughrin Harps, all of Alpharetta, Georgia. Also surviving are her sisters Jeanne C. Robinson of Columbia, and Mary Frances C. Lown of North Augusta.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday May 26, 2007, at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry and the family did receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Interment, at Chestnut Hill Baptist Church in Chappells, South Carolina, did follow the service.
Memorials may be made to the Connie Maxwell Children’s Home, P. O. Box 1178, Greenwood, South Carolina, 29648.

Vivian L. Johnson
May 14, 2007

Vivian L. Johnson, 69, formerly of Newberry, died Monday, May 14, 2007 in Ridgeway, SC.
She was born on July 13, 1937 in Henderson Co., NC, a daughter of the late William E. and Velma Bone Johnson.
Graveside funeral services were conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday at Shepherd Memorial Park in Hendersonville NC.

Elizabeth Hopke Clarkson
May 10, 2007

Elizabeth Hopke Clarkson, formerly of Charleston and Newberry, widow of John F. Clarkson, died Thursday, May 10, 2007.
Mrs. Clarkson is survived by her daughters, Mrs. John Templeton of Highpoint, NC and Mrs. Richard H. Ivester of Greenville; five grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services were at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, June 2, in Rosemont Cemetery.

Rosa Mae Roddey Faile
June 20, 2007

Rosa Mae Roddey Faile, 82, formerly of Newberry, wife of the late John Ghonzelee Faile, died Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at Eden Garden in Rock Hill.
She was born on September 3, 1924 in Chester County, a daughter of the late William H. and Rosa Curry Roddey. She was a member of Queens Memorial Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by two sisters, Ruth R. Worthy and Frances R. Woodrow and two nieces, Helen Weir and Betty Fleming, all of Chester.
Graveside funeral services were conducted at 3:00 PM Friday at Evergreen Cemetery in Chester.

Lewis J. Shealy
June 19, 2007

Lewis J. Shealy, 91, of 1352 Wilson Road, Newberry, died Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at the J.F. Hawkins Nursing Home.
He was born on Dec. 3, 1915 in Little Mountain, the son of the late Ervin L. and Elizabeth Shealy Shealy. He was an Army veteran of WW II. He was a Vice President and Loan Officer with South Carolina National Bank and retired from there after more than 30 years of service.
He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church where he was a former congregational council member, a member of the Adult Sunday School Class and the Leisure Club. He was the treasurer at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer for 40 years and was a former member of the Newberry Civitan Club. He was a passionate gardener who loved to share the fruits of his labor.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Lester Shealy of Newberry; a daughter, Mabel (Alan) Reighley of West Lawn, PA; a brother, Herman L. Shealy of Laurens; three grandchildren, Kimberly (Doug) McNames, Donna (Juan) Ayala, and Christopher (Melody) Reighley; and five great grandchildren, Margaret Ayala, Aaron Ayala, Shannon McNames, Connor Reighley, and Delany Reighley.
Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 AM Friday at Faith Lutheran Church by the Rev. Charles Aurand and the Rev. Pierce Evans. Entombment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 6:30 to 8:00 PM Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family was at the residence, 1352 Wilson Road.
Memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church, 1505 Wilson Road, Newberry SC 29108.
Active pallbearers will be Dale Eargle, Johnny Stevens, Herman Lee Shealy, Everett Shealy, Eddie Shealy, Biemann Othersen, John Wheeler, and Mike Dawkins.

William Leland “Bill” Canine
June 9, 2007

William Leland “Bill” Canine, 85, died Saturday, June 9, 2007 in Newberry.
Mr. Canine was born May 28, 1922, in St. Louis, Missouri; he was a son of the late William Leland and Martha Newman Canine. He was a graduate of Duke University and the University of Chicago. He was a member of sigma Alpha Epsilon and Beta Omega Sigma, life member of American Philatelic Society, the Duke University Half-Century Club and a life member of the 4th Marine Division Association. He was formerly a member of the English Department at Duke University, director of Development at Hollins College, Va. and Newberry College, SC and of the Nature Conservancy in Washington , D. C. where he was also the editor of ”The Nature Conservancy News”. Mr. Canine published short stories and articles in many magazines and in retirement published some 500 crossword puzzles. He was an officer in the U. S. Marine Corps and a veteran of World Was II, the recipient of the Presidential Unit Citation and the Purple Heart for wounds received as a platoon commander on Iwo Jima. Mr. Canine was a member of St. Lukes Episcopal Church and a former member of Newberry Country Club.
Surviving are his wife Emily Anderson Canine, son David Bryant Canine and his wife Theresa of Dallas, Tx.; son Andrew Leland Canine and his wife Sandra of Chesapeake Beach, Md.; daughter Helen C. Summer of Columbia; daughter Amy and her husband John A. Kissane of Athens Ga.; grandsons Sky, Orion and Colin Canine of Chesapeake Beach, Md.; David B. Summer, III of Columbia; William Kissane of Athens Ga.; granddaughters Nitasha Canine of Annapolis, Md. Emily Summer of Columbia; and Emma Kissane of Athens Ga. and a step-grandson Stephen O’Rourke of Dallas Tx. A sister predeceased him.
Memorial funeral services were conducted 2:00 PM Tuesday at St. Lukes Episcopal Church. Interment was in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
The family wishes to express deepest gratitude to Hospice Care of Tri County.

William Claude Shealy
June 6, 2007

William Claude Shealy, 87, of Hamlet, NC, died Wednesday, June 6, 2007 in Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He was born December 15, 1919 in Little Mountain, SC a son of the late A.H. and Olive Shealy.
Mr. Shealy served in the Navy during peace time on U.S.S. Arizona. He worked and retired from the Department of Navy. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Graveside services were Sunday, June 10, 2007 at 4 P.M. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery in Little Mountain, SC with Rev. John C. Pfisterer officiating.
Surviving are his wife, Lena Mears Shealy of Hamlet, NC; a son, Robert Shealy of Rosemead, CA; daughters, Sandy Harman of Reno, NV and Priscilla Walker of Lake Havasu, AZ; a brother, Paul Shealy of Spring Hill, FL; sisters, Janet Awtrey of Pinson, AL, Janie Azilee Salley, Orangeburg, SC and Eleanor Adeimy of Hamlet, NC; grandchildren, Barbara Cardoza and Joey Shealy of Rosemead, CA.
The family did receive friends Saturday evening from 6-8 P.M. at Watson-King Funeral Home in Hamlet.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 311 Marlboro St., Hamlet, NC 28345.
Watson-King Funeral Home in Hamlet is serving the Shealy family.

Lucy Chapman Graham
June 8, 2007

Lucy Chapman Graham, 85, of 1311 Graham Road, widow of Forrest Lee Graham, died June 8, 2007 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
She was born on December 24, 1921 in Newberry County, a daughter of the late Luther E. and Lena Kunkle Chapman. She was a member of the St. Matthews Lutheran Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Patsy Graham (Rodney) Chapman of Pomaria and Judy Lee Graham of Newberry; a grandson, William Forrest Attaway of Pomaria; sisters, Mary Nelle Lester and Bernice Shealy, both of Newberry. She was predeceased by her first husband, Henry Hendrix; an infant son; sisters: Annie Bell Long, Gertrude Bedenbaugh, Eunice Bedenbaugh, Jennie Oxner; and brothers: Ben Chapman, Ishmael Chapman, Malcolm Chapman, Curtis Chapman, Rufus Chapman, Lewis Chapman and Bud Chapman.
Funeral services were 2:00 P. M. Monday in St. Matthews Lutheran Church with interment in the church cemetery.
The family did receive friends from 2:00 to 3:30 P. M on Sunday at the funeral home.
The family were at her residence, 1311 Graham Road, Pomaria.
Memorials may be made to the St. Matthews Lutheran Church, PO Box 170, Pomaria, SC 29126 or to the Pomaria Rescue Squad, PO Box 153, Pomaria, SC 29126.
Active pallbearers were William Attaway, Doyle Shealy, Dennis Graham, Timmy Graham, Dan Graham, Jay Harley, Chris Rikard, Drew Perry, and Kevin Crumpton.
