TERRY ELMORE

Terry Elmore, age 49, formerly of Bishopville, passed away on Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at Homestead Hospital, Homestead, Fla.

She is survived by her lifetime companion, Frank Dennis; mother, Olive K. Crews; and sister, Julia Hucks.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a service of remembrance at Dennis Farms, 872 Five Bridges Road (Jones Road), at 11 a.m. Saturday.

GILBERT NELSON

Gilbert Nelson died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at the Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

The family is receiving visitors at the home of his brother, Elijah Nelson, 101 Orange St., Sumter.

Services are incomplete and will be announced by Community Funeral Home of Sumter.

THEOLA R. HORTON

Theola Ragin Horton, daughter of the late John Ragin and Minnie Ida Watson Ragin, was born in Summerton, Clarendon County, on Aug. 23, 1928, and departed this life on Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Theola attended Robert Smalls High School in Holly Hill. She accepted Christ as her personal savior at an early age and joined Liberty Hill AME Church and remained a member until her death. In 1947, Theola married the late Sam Horton Sr. and to this union five children were born: one daughter, Minnie; and four sons, Sam Jr., George, Roosevelt and Alvin. Sam Jr. and George preceded her in death.

In 1966, Theola moved to New York City for a better life for her and her family. Her children remained at home with her mother. While in New York, she joined Second St. John Baptist Church and served as a member of the Harmoniers. Theola was employed at various jobs in New York while also attending Apex Beauty School.

In 1976, she received her certificate to become a licensed beautician and continued this profession until she moved back home in 1980 to help with raising her grandchildren. Upon returning home, she began attending St. Phillip RMUE Church as a watch care member under the leadership of the Rev. Joseph Gadsen. Theola served as a member of the senior choir, kitchen committee, missionary society and stewardess board. Theola was a faithful and loving person who never let her illness get in the way of her serving the Lord. She was a wonderful person and will truly be missed.

She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Minnie Junious of Pinewood; two sons, Roosevelt Horton of New York and Alvin Horton of Pinewood; one daughter-in-law, Williene Briggs Horton of New York City; two sisters, Ruby Martin and Willie Bell Frierson of New York City; three sisters-in-law, Annie Mae (Emmanuel) Benjamin of Sumter, Jean Ragin and Lovie Ragin, both of New York City; one brother-in-law, Felix Wright of Summerton; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family will receive friends at the home of her son and daughter, Alvin Horton and Minnie Horton Junious, 1129 Armour Hill Road, Pinewood, River Road community.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Liberty Hill AME Church.

The body will be placed in the church at noon Friday.

Fleming Funeral Home of Summerton is in charge of arrangements.

DOROTHY G. ROSE

KINGSTREE -- Dorothy Gean Rose, 49, died Oct. 26, 2004, at Williamsburg Regional Hospital, Kingstree.

Born April 1, 1955, in the Barrineau community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Dorothy Mae Blackwell Rose and the late Clyde Dell Rose.

The family will receive friends at the home of her mother, Dorothy Mae Rose, 67 Lattimore Ave., Kingstree.

Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

VISTA G. HUDNALL

Vista Griffin Hudnall, 95, widow of James McQueen Hudnall, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Brown, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Rosetta Virginia Robinson and James Griffin. Mrs. Hudnall was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church since 1973 and a member of the Golden Age Club.

Surviving are one son, John Michael Hudnall and wife Gloria of Sumter; one daughter, Almira A. Papierniak and husband William of Bracey, Va.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Lona Harbert, Freda Griffin and Esther Griffin; and four brothers, Cline Griffin, Lester Griffin, Hobart Griffin and Ben Griffin.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Eubanks officiating.

Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to St. Mark's United Methodist Church.

ELIJAH BENNETT

MANNING -- Elijah "Son" Bennett, 86, widower of Mary Ethel Gipson Bennett, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born May 16, 1918, in the Potato Creek community, Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Moses Bennett and Mary Session Bennett. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a retired farmer. He was a lifelong member of St. James AME Church.

Survivors include two sons, Willie E. (Darlene) Bennett and Floyd Bennett, both of Baltimore; six daughters, Lizzie Stephens and Barbara Thompson, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., Fannie (Thadeus) Davis of Baltimore, Sylvia (Velta) Wright and Shirley James, all of Manning, and Lucille (Norman) Canty of Summerton; one sister, Hattie Gerow of Summerton; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one adopted son, Jessie Cain of Davis Station.

He was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.

The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at House of God Miracle Temple, Davis Station community, with the Rev. R.L. Brown officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. James Gibbs, Pastor Gwendolyn Taylor and Elder Frank Taylor. Overseer O'Celia Blue is the pastor of the church.

Burial will be in the St. James AME Church cemetery.

The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the residence, 1743 W. Rickenbaker Road, Davis Station community.

The family will receive friends at the residence.

Summerton Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

CLARA BELL P. GAMBLE

NEW ZION -- Clara Bell Pearson Gamble, 60, wife of Centry Gamble Sr., died Oct. 25, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born Oct. 21, 1944, in the Davis Crossroads section of Summerton, she was a daughter of the late Willis Pearson and Sarah Harvin Pearson James and stepdaughter of Bennie James. She began her education at Resseville Elementary School and, after relocating to Bridgeport, Conn., she attended Central High School. In her youth, she joined Mt. Ivery Baptist Church, where she accepted Christ as her personal savior. After marrying, she joined Friendship Presbyterian Church (USA), where she was active until her health failed. She was a member of the usher board, deaconess board, trustee board, Presbyterian Women, adult choir and St. Mary Chapter 156 Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors besides her husband, Centry Gamble of the home, include two sons, Centry (Donna) Gamble Jr. of Shelton, Conn., and Eric (Cheryl) Gamble of Taylor; three stepsons, Centry J. Samuel and Terry (Janice) Baker, both of Manning, and Irwin Baker of Bridgeport, Conn.; one daughter, Lorraine (James) of New Zion and Michelle Mattocks of Brooklyn, N.Y.; stepdaughter; one sister, Madison Lee Williams of Bridgeport, Conn.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Larry Pearson and Truman Jimmie James.

Rites will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today, St. Mary Chapter 156 Order of Eastern Star, Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning.

The remains will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Friendship Presbyterian Church (USA), S.C. 527, Black River Road, New Zion, with the Rev. Stanley Jones I, pastor, officiating, assisting the Revs. Herbert Shackleford, Carnell Hampton, Jerome McCray, Rufus Gaymon and the Rev. Dr. Franklin Colclough.

Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Golden Gate Lodge No. 78.

Floral bearers will be St. Mary Chapter 156 Order of Eastern Star and the usher board of Friendship Presbyterian Church.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 1118 Black River Road, New Zion.

GILBERT NELSON

Gilbert Nelson was born Oct. 27, 1931, in Clarendon County. He was the son of the late Julius Nelson and Rosa Lee Rhames Nelson. Gilbert was educated in the public school system of Clarendon County. He was employed in the furniture industry as a packer for many years while living in Florida. After he retired, he moved back home to Sumter and he joined Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church.

Gilbert was married to Delores Nelson and this union was blessed with one child, Gilbert Lee Nelson, and five grandchildren.

He departed this life on Oct. 26, 2004, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Gilbert Nelson leaves to cherish and mourn his passing one son, Gilbert Lee Nelson of Norfolk, Va.; two brothers, Deacon Elijah Nelson and his wife, Elizabeth, and Joseph Nelson and his wife, Sarah, both of Sumter; one sister, Ola Mae Williams of Mullins; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton. Burial will follow in the Dicks cemetery.

Viewing will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today.

The procession will leave from the home of his brother and sister-in-law, Elijah and Elizabeth Nelson, 101 Orange St., at 1:45 p.m.

The family will also receive friends at the home of Elijah and Elizabeth Nelson.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

ARTHUR E. CROSBY

COLUMBIA -- Retired Master Sgt. Arthur Etal Crosby, of 529 Bitternut Road, beloved ex-husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, departed this earthly life on Monday morning, Oct. 25, 2004, at the Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia.

Arthur, the eldest son of the late Lee Crosby and Peggie Nelson Crosby, was born July 31, 1932, in Rimini. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church of Columbia, where he was active in Bible study and was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. At the age of 17, he joined the United States Army and began a distinguished career in which he would see action in both the Korean and Vietnam wars, earning no less than 15 medals and citations as well as an eventual ascension to the rank of master sergeant. Shortly after joining the Army, he married Sallie Luedna Wells of Pinewood. From this union, seven children were born.

After serving his tour of duty in the Army, he went from defending his country to nurturing it, working for such charitable organizations like Habitat for Humanity, where he refurbished furniture and appliances for needy families. He also served food to the homeless in various shelters and soup kitchens.

He leaves to mourn, his beloved ex-wife and friend, Sallie Crosby; two daughters, Debra Green of Highland Park, N.J., and Beverley Crosby of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sons, Terry and Kai Crosby of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Two children preceded Mr. Crosby in death, Cassandra Crosby and Cynthia Crosby, and two brothers.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Antioch RMUE Church in Rimini with the Rev. William Polite, pastor, assisting by the Revs. Warren Hatcher, Amos Hatcher, Michael Ross and Arnold Williams. Burial will follow in Spring Grove cemetery.

Viewing will be held from noon until 9 p.m. Friday with a wake service from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

The procession will leave from the home of his niece, Patsy Crosby-Pugh, 1062 Billups Road, Rimini, at 1:15 p.m.

The family is also receiving visitors at the home of Patsy Crosby-Pugh.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of these arrangements.
