THOMAS A. JOHNSTON Sr.

Thomas A. Johnston Sr., 82, husband of Mamie Louise Kolb Johnston, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Turbeville, he was the son of the late Henry Lee Johnston and the late Hattie Holliday Johnston. Mr. Johnston was a member of New Salem Baptist Church, Jamil Temple, past president of the Sumter Shrine Club, a member of the Sumter Masonic Lodge, a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the American Legion Post No. 15, the Woodmen of the World, and was a member and past president of Riverside Hunting Club. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, retired from Shaw Air Force Base civil service after 29 years of service, and was retired from Central Carolina Technical College after 30 years of service.

Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Thomas A. "Tommy" Johnston Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Sumter and Terry L. Johnston and his wife, Barbara, of Charlotte, N.C.; four grandchildren, Thomas A. "Bubba" Johnston III and his wife, Kim, of Sumter, Tracy L. Schillinger and her husband, Marty, of Greenville, Trenton H. "Trent" Johnston and Travis B. Johnston, both of Charlotte; a sister, Billie J. Rabon of Sumter; and two great-grandchildren, Ashton and Jaimee.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Rivers officiating.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Roy Alsbrooks, Grady Wilson, Chuck Mangham, Sid Young, Frank Burrows and Rick Lyles.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the McDonald's Breakfast Buddies and the Cuttino Bible Class of New Salem Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Johnston, 601 Cardinal St.

Memorials may be made to New Salem Baptist Church Building Fund, 2500 W. Oakland Ave., Sumter, SC 29150.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

A. MARIE R. THAMES

MANNING -- Alice Marie Ragin Thames, 91, widow of Rufus Boyd Thames Sr., died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at NHC of Sumter.

Born Feb. 2, 1913, in Kingstree, she was a daughter of the late William Edward and Fanny Alice Bradham Ragin. She was a retired nurse's aide from Clarendon Memorial Hospital and a member of Manning First Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, R. Boyd Thames Jr. of Columbia and Charles R. Thames Sr. of Boiling Springs; a sister, Edna Ward of Manning; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Manning First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Paul M. Sullivan officiating. Burial will follow in Manning cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

ROSA FORTUNE

LYNCHBURG -- Rosa Fortune, 95, widow of Murray Fortune, died Nov. 2, 2004, at her residence, 2385 U.S. 76 West, Lynchburg.

Born Oct. 10, 1909, in Lynchburg, she was a daughter of the late Edmond and Leola Wells Melton. She attended the Lee County public schools and was a longtime member of Mt. Pleasant AME Church, Lynchburg.

Survivors include one daughter, Rebecca Melton of the home; two sons, Bernie Fortune of the home and Jesse (Shirley) Fortune of Columbia; two sisters-in-law, Susanne Addison of Sumter and Maggie McFadden of Bishopville; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter, Jatavia A. Woods; 14 nieces and nephews; a special, adopted niece reared as her own, Ruth McKnight of Columbia; three special grandnieces, Loretta W. Deaner of Kuwait, Georgena M. Johnson of Columbia and Delphine Woods of the home; a special, lifelong family friend, Lillie Mae China of Lynchburg; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Olivia M. Woods, Maxine M. Clavon and Louise M. Joe; and two brothers, Lisch Melton and Robert Melton.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Mt. Pleasant AME Church with the Rev. Alfred Bradley, pastor, assisted by the Rev. C.N. Howard. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 2385 U.S. 76 West, Lynchburg, SC 29080.

Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

GERALD B. HARDIN

ROWLAND, N.C. -- Gerald Bainard Hardin, 55, died Oct. 31, 2004.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Bainard Lawton Hardin and Betty A. Hardin Hodge of Sumter.

Services will be announced by Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter.

MARY LEE J. SINGLETON

Mary Lee James Singleton, 75, wife of Allen "Lucky" Eugene Singleton, died Nov. 2, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 28, 1929, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Isaac and Bertha Taylor James. Mrs. Singleton attended the public schools of Washington, D.C. After returning to Sumter, she attended the public schools and was reared by Berlie James and the late Alex James. Reared in a Christian home, she accepted Christ as her personal savior and joined St. Paul AME Church. She later moved her membership to Congruity Presbyterian Church, where she served as a trustee and deacon until her health failed.

Survivors besides her husband of 57 years include four children, Mary Goodley, Barbara (Lewis) Williams, Jimmie Singleton and Deloris Lesesne, all of Sumter; a loving granddaughter, Jacqualine Taylor, and great-granddaughter, Sharnell Commander, both of the home; a granddaughter reared as her own, Lucretia Singleton; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; three adopted children, Willie Goodley and Freddie Goodley, both of Sumter, Melvin Goodley of Columbia; six sisters, Gladys Brook, Frances Smalls, Mary D. Reed, Shirley L. James, all of Sumter, Gladys James and Cora Stanley, both of New York; one brother, Richmond James of Sumter; one uncle, Frank Williams Sr. of Sumter; one special and dear friend, Della Holmes of Sumter; a daughter-in-law, Pauline Singleton; five sisters-in-law; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by two children, Corean James and Bertha L. Taylor.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Congruity Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Williams Jones Jr., pastor, assisted by Elders John Davis and Sarah James, the Revs. Alvin Webb and Cassandra James. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 1025 Plowden Mill Road, Sumter.

JEWELL E. JACKSON

Jewell Elaine "Pinky" Jackson, 45, died Nov. 1, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 26, 1959, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Deacon Lizzie Lee Archie Jackson and the late Elder Ryttenburg Otto Jackson. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age, she joined Ebenezer Presbyterian Church (USA), Dalzell. She was a very soft spoken person and always did what she could to help with church affairs. Jewell was a well-liked person to all who knew her. She was employed at Becton Dickinson for more than 25 years until her health failed.

Survivors include one son, James Whitfield Jackson of Sumter; two daughters, Lashawnda Hope (Lenue) Richardson of Irmo and Shante' Charmaine Jackson of the home; one brother, the Rev. Dr. Ernest (Julia) Jackson of Sumter; four sisters, Cora Archie, Bernice J. (Randolph) Smith and Edith V. (Gail) Jackson, all of Sumter, and Janette J. (John T.) Spencer of New Market, Ala.; one grandson, Lenue Samuel Otto Richardson III of Irmo; a special niece, Kim Archie of Sumter; one uncle, Colclough Jackson of Dalzell; and a special friend, Roosevelt Durant of Sumter.

She was preceded in death by her father, Elder Ryttenburg Otto Jackson; and a nephew, Sean Randall Smith.

The remains will be placed in the church at 11 a.m.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday from Ebenezer Presbyterian Church (USA), 4620 Queen Chapel Road, Dalzell, with the Rev. Dr. Lutrelle Rainey Sr., pastor, eulogist.

Burial will be in Ebenezer Presbyterian Churchyard cemetery, Dalzell.

Pallbearers will be friends and relatives.

Floral bearers will be friends and relatives.

The procession will leave at 11:20 a.m. from the home of her mother, Lizzie A. Jackson, 325 Sandy Run Drive, Sumter.

LEROY STARKS

ST. ALBANS, N.Y. -- Leroy "Roy" Starks, 60, husband of Sandra Allen Starks, died Oct. 29, 2004, at Mary Immaculate, St. Albans.

Born Nov. 28, 1943, in Manning, he was a son of Frances Starks and Lila Hilton Starks. He received his formal education in the public schools of Darlington County and attended Mayo High School. He worked as a forklift operator at Tulnoy Lumber Co. and retired after 30 years of service.

Survivors besides his wife, Sandra A. Starks of St. Albans, include one son, Trevis, and a stepson, Derrico, both of St. Albans; two daughters, Donna and Kammie (Evan), both of St. Albans; two brothers, Johnny Starks and Henry (Essie Mae) Starks, both of Manning; six sisters, Ada J. Hilton of Manning, Mildred Ferguson of Jamaica, N.Y., Audrey Richardson of Timmonsville, Willive Rouse of Darlington, Margie Tindal and Loretta Starks, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning, with the Rev. O'Donald Dingle, eulogist, the Rev. James Hudley officiating, assisted by the Rev. W.J. Frierson and the Rev. Kay Frierson.

Burial will be in Union Cypress AME Church cemetery, Jordan community of Manning.

The family will receive friends at the home of his brother, Johnny Starks, 5618 Moses Dingle Road, Davis Station community of Manning.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

JULIE LEE EBORN

MOBILE, Ala. -- Julie Lee Eborn, 65, wife of Joe Murray, died Nov. 4, 2004, at USA Medical Court, Mobile.

Born in Harlem, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Lee Summers and Lillian Bowman Frierson.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

ANTONIO VAUGHN

Antonio Vaughn, 17, died Nov. 4, 2004, at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Born Sept. 4, 1987, in Sumter County, he was a son of Charlie Vaughn and Rebecca McDowell Vaughn.

The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, 1017 Acers Ave.

Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

WADDELL COOKE

BISHOPVILLE -- Waddell Cooke died Friday morning, Nov. 5, 2004, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center, Hartsville.

The family is receiving friends at the home, 513 Mickel St.

Funeral services will be announced by Square Deal Funeral Home of Bishopville.

JERRY W. BASS

Jerry Wayne Bass, age 62, husband of the late Carolyn Reid Bass, died on Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at his residence.

He was born in Tennessee, a son of Dolas Irene Murray Bass and the late James Henry Bass. He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 24 years of service and served during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Elks Club Lodge No. 855 and was a Mason.

Surviving are two sons, Jerry Mark Bass of Dalzell and Thomas Scott Bass of Dalzell; two brothers, Jack Bass of Indiana and Jim Bass of Tennessee; one sister, Mary Ruth Bass of Tennessee; two grandchildren; and his fiancée, Linda Wilson.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at The Hillcrest Funeral Home in Shelbyville, Tenn., with the Rev. David Wall officiating. Burial will follow in the Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Shelbyville.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Hillcrest Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends locally from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday with a memorial service at 5:30 p.m. at Bullock Funeral Home with Chuck Trotter and Linda Wilson officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Elks Lodge No. 855 and the Masons.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home for the local arrangements.
