Dyson's Home for Funerals sorrowfully regrets to announce the passing of Sonya Riley-Cooper, age 40, who entered into eternal rest on Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, at her residence, 3135 Tamarah Way, Sumter.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Aug. 30, 1963, she was the wife of Melvin Cooper.

The family is receiving friends at the home of her brother and sister-in-law, Bernard and Brenda Cooper, 2485 Lorentz Drive, Amhurst Subdivision, Sumter.

Arrangements entrusted to Dyson's Home for Funerals of Summerton.

SAMPSON DIGGS

Sampson "Peter" Diggs, 55, died Oct. 31, 2004, in Washington, D.C. Born in Sumter County on April 20, 1949, he was the son of the late June Diggs and Mary Ellen Diggs Moody and the stepson of the late Oliver Moody.

He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. He was a loving and devoted father of eight children and 11 grandchildren who will always cherish his memory.

Survivors include a devoted friend, Rosa "Linda" Green of Washington, D.C., four sons, Peter Green of Veko Beach, Fla., Sampson Green of Newport News, Va., Doug Diggs of Alexander, Va., and Amos Green of Washington, D.C.; four daughters, Melvenia Diggs, Monet Green, Linda Wade, all of Washington, D.C., and Tamika Diggs of Maryland; one brother, Junior (Annie Mae) Diggs; six sisters, Mary (Hilliard) Osborne of Washington, D.C., Bellma Davis of Patterson, N.J., Virginia Wade, Carolyn Diggs, Marilyn Diggs, Beulah Diggs, all of Rembert, S.C.; and 11 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at the Rafting Creek Baptist Church on S.C. 261 North, Rembert, with the Rev. Dr. Charles H. Davis, Pastor, Eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Brudell Hill, the Rev. Lillian Reynolds and Pastor Greg Dennis. The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Burial will be in the Rafting Creek Baptist Church Yard cemetery, Rembert. The procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the home of his sister, Virginia Wade, 6375 T.B. Wright Road, Rembert.

Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

WAYNE D. WATSON

MIAMI -- Wayne D. Watson, 59, husband of the late Estelle Bowman Green Watson, died Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at Regional West Medical Center. Born on Sept. 5 1945, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of Elijah Watson, Sr. and Mary Sheridan Watson.

Mr. Watson grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., and was later employed by the New York Transit.

Survivors beside his parents include two sisters, Joyce Holden of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Clara Lynn of Philadelphia; one brother, Charles Watson of Brooklyn; two step-sons, Wayne Green, Sr. and Ronald Green; one daughter-in-law, Marlene Green; two grandsons, Wayne Green, Jr. and De'Andre Green; six brothers-in-law, Nelson Lynn of Philadelphia, Nivel Holden of Brooklyn, N.Y., Walter Bowman, Preston Bowman, Jr., Oscar Hopkins, Sr., all of Long Island, N.Y., and MacKinley Bowman, Sr. of Sumter; three sisters-in-law, Bernice Bowman, Novell Hopkins, both of Long Island, N.Y., and Ethel Lee Bowman of Sumter, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday at Job's Mortuary Inc., 312 South Main Street in Sumter.

Burial will be at the Friendship A.M.E. Church cemetery, Silver.

Job's Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

LEONARD LYNN RADCLIFFE

Mr. Leonard Lynn Radcliffe, 74, husband of Patricia Ardis Radcliffe, died Friday, Nov. 5, 2004.

Born in Lee County, he was the son of the late Benjamin J. and Geneva Brown Radcliffe. He retired from E.I. DuPont with 35 years of service. Mr. Radcliffe was a member of New Salem Baptist Church. He was a 32nd Degree Master Mason, a member of The Jamil Shrine Temple, Columbia; a member of the York Rite, and the Sumter Masonic Lodge #301 Af&M.

Survivors are his wife; a son, Charles J. Radcliffe and his wife, Terry; two step-sons, Gregg Scott and his wife, Sherry, and Clint Scott and his wife, Bonnie, all of Sumter; grandchildren, Joseph Chad Radcliffe, Stacie Lynn Radcliffe, Tyler, Brayden and Bailey Scott; Marie Thompson, Michelle Newman, Lauren and Melissa Scott, Jacob and Rachel Tedder; great-grandchildren, Hanna-Grace Thompson and Hallie Thompson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Radcliffe; a son, Lynn Leonard, Jr. and a stepdaughter, Pam Newman.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Rivers officiating. Burial will be in Sumter cemetery with Masonic Rites. Pallbearers will be Calvin Hodge, Luke Hendrix, Ed Browder, Robert Ardis, Jim Giffin, Joe Ridley and Roy Alsbrook. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Phillip Brandt and members of the Cuttino Bible Class of New Salem Baptist Church. The family will receive friends this afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the home of his son.

Memorials may be made to New Salem Baptist Church Building Fund, 2500 W. Oakland Ave., Sumter, 29150.

PERRY JOHNSON

Perry Johnson, husband of Evelyn Johnson, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at his residence in Sumter. Born in Sumter County on April 12, 1925, he was a son of the late Simon and Jacquelyn Mack Johnson.

Mr. Johnson was a member of Clark United Methodist Church where he served as Trustee and a member of the United Methodist Men. He was employed for many years at the Kinsey Cabinet Company in New Jersey until his retirement in 1982.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Oliver and Walter Johnson and one sister, Rosa Lee Johnson.

Survivors are his wife, Evelyn Reese Johnson of the home; one son, Wilbert Heriott, Sumter; two grandsons, Matthew Mack of Florence and Micheal W. Heriott of Oakland, Calif.; two great-grandchildren: Nicholas and Nicole Mack, Sumter; two sisters: Hanna Johnson and Ora Lee Johnson both of Sumter.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at the Clark United Methodist Church with the Rev. Eddie C. Thomas, Jr., pastor officiating assisted by the Rev. Joshua Dupree and the Rev. Willie Lawson. Burial will follow in the Clark Church cemetery. Mr. Johnson will be placed in the church for viewing at 2 p.m. until the hour of service. He may be viewed by the public from 2 to 5 p.m. today at the Palmer Memorial Chapel. The funeral procession will leave at 2 p.m. on Monday from the residence of 740 Ripper Lane in Sumter.

The family will receive friends at 740 Ripper Lane, Sumter.

JAMES B. GRIFFIN

GARDEN CITY, Ga. -- James B. Griffin, 94, formerly of Sumter, died Nov. 5, 2004, at his daughter's home. He was the widower of the late Jeanette Thames Griffin.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late James N. and Clemmie Ingram Griffin. He owned and operated Griffin's Body Shop for 46 years.

Surviving are a daughter, Jo Griffin Marshall, of Garden City, Ga.; a son, Harold Burns Griffin, of Atlanta; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren; sisters, Mary Lou Truluck, Florence Jackson and Cleo Jackson; a brother, Bernard Griffin. He was preceded in death by brothers, Robert, William, Carol and Charlton.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with burial in Bethel Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.

ROBERTA DENISE BLANDING

Roberta Denise Blanding, 43, died Friday at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born on June 2, 1961, in Sumter, she was the daughter of Robert Blanding, Sr. and Barbara Franklin Blanding.

Family will receive friends at the residence, 604 Atlantic Street. Funeral services are incomplete and will be announced later by Job's Mortuary, Inc. of Sumter.

JIMMIE R. CURETON

Jimmie R. Cureton, 71, husband of Martha Leneau Cureton, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 25, 1932, he was the son of the late Henry and Lucille Dicks Cureton.

Family will receive friends at the residence, 2437 Derwent Drive, Sumter.

Funeral services are incomplete and will be announced later by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

SAMPSON BOWMAN

MANNING -- Sampson "Sammie" Bowman, 87, husband of Ella Johnson Bowman, died Nov. 6, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning. Born April 22, 1917, in the Davis Crossroad section of Summerton, he was a son of the late Arthur Bowman and Corine McCray Bowman.

The family will receive friends at the home, 26 W. End St., Manning.

Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

ANTONIO JAMAL VAUGHN

Antonio "Tony" Jamal Vaughn, 17, died Nov. 4, 2004, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Born in Sumter County on Sept. 4, 1987, he was a son of Rebecca McDowell Vaughn and Charles Vaughn.

He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County, where he was involved in football at Chestnut Oaks Middle School and Sumter High School. In his youth, he joined the Greater Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors besides his parents include two brothers, Donnell J. Vaughn and Charon R. Rhodes, both of Sumter; his grandmothers, Rosa Mae Sigler-McDowell and Martha Melton-Vaughn; his great-grandmother, Jessie Mae Butler-Sigler; eight uncles, Abraham (Shirley) McDowell Jr., Jacob (Rayshel) McDowell, Joseph McDowell, Deacon Willie (Cornelia) Vaughn, Minister Timothy (Marilyn) Vaughn, Lennie L. (Yvette) Vaughn, all of Sumter, Isaac (Roxie) McDowell of Durham, N.C., and Wayne (Juanita) McFadden; three aunts, Lou McDowell, LaShawn McElveen and Lennie Mae Cabbagestalk; and god mother, Patricia Maple.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Abraham McDowell and Lennie Vaughn Jr. and one grandaunt, Mattie McDowell-McKenzie.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday from Greater Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, Miller Road, Sumter, with the Rev. Marvin Hodge, pastor, eulogist, assisted by Minister Mary R. Harvin, the Rev. Ellie Palmer and Minister Shirley Holiday.

Burial will be in St. Paul Holiness Church cemetery, Sumter.

Pallbearers and floral bearers will be classmates and friends.

The procession will leave at 2 p.m. from the home of his mother, Rebecca McDowell Vaughn, 1017 Acers Ave., Sumter.

Dyson's Home for Funerals announces funeral services for Mrs. Sonya Wiley-Cooper will be held at noon Tuesday in the chapel of Dyson's Home for Funerals. The Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson is officiating. Final resting place will be Friendship AME Church, Silver.

Mrs. Sonya Wiley-Cooper, 40, entered into eternal rest on Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, at her residence, 3135 Tamarah Way in Sumter.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Aug. 30, 1963, she was the daughter of Robert Wiley Sr. and the late Mary Ellen Glover Wiley. She was the wife of Melvin Cooper Sr.

She was educated in the public schools of Hollis-Queens, N.Y., where she graduated from Andrew Jackson High School. She attended Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Hollis-Queens, N.Y.

She was employed as a medical record technician at Queens General Hospital in New York City.

She leaves to mourn her passing other than her father and her husband a son, Melvin Cooper Jr. and a daughter, Crystal Cooper, both of the home; one brother, Robert (Debra) Wiley Jr. of Rosedale, Long Island, N.Y., two sisters, Pamela Lewis and Devon Coger, both of Bronx, N.Y., grandparents, Essie Garrett of Bronx and Hester and John Mole of Brooklyn, N.Y.; her mother-in-law, Margie Cooper of Sumter; and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family is receiving friends at the home of her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bernard and Brenda Cooper, 2485 Lorentz Drive, Amhurst Subdivision, Sumter.

WARDELL COOK Sr.

BISHOPVILLE -- Wardell Cook Sr. died Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center, Hartsville.

Born in Lee County, Jan. 1, 1928, he was a son of the late Prince Cook and Mamie Lonon Cook. He attended the public schools of Lee County. He was a member of Mechanicsville United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Gracia Boykin Cook of the home; two sons, Wardell (Frances) Cook Sr. of Hackensack, N.J., and Charles Edward Cook of Englewood, N.J.; six daughters, Mamie Lee (Luther) Wilson of Englewood, Geneva (Sammie) Bowman of Hackensack, Barbara Ann Cook of Hackensack, Pearl M. Cook of Lodie, N.J., Jessie Mae Cook of Englewood, and Janie Mae Jackson of Atlanta; 23 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Mechanicsville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Herbert Fogle officiating. Burial will be in Mechanicsville Church cemetery.
