KINLOCH BULL

Kinloch Bull, 78, died Oct. 20, 2004, at Georgetown Retirement Residence in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Bull was a native of Sumter and a son of the late Francis Kinloch Bull and Julia Ball Bull.

Mr. Bull received his education from Edmunds High School in Sumter, the University of South Carolina, the University of Chicago and the University of Paris. He was an Army veteran.

Most of his adult life was spent in the Foreign Service with the Department of State, with assignments in the Far East, Africa and South America. A graduate of the War College, Mr. Bull held the Medal of Merit of the Central Intelligence Agency.

A lifelong student of history, he was the author of "The Oligarchs in Colonial and Revolutionary Charleston: Lieutenant Governor William Bull II and His Family."

Surviving are a brother, DeSaussure Bull of Palmer Lake, Colo.; a sister, Julia Bull Aymonier of Little Silver, N.J.; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Wilson Bull Amato, and a brother, Elias Ball Bull.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Church of the Holy Cross with the Rev. Dick Archer officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Historic Preservation Trust, Church of the Holy Cross, 335 N. Kings Highway, Sumter, SC 29154.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St., is in charge of arrangements.

DORA DONALD

Dora Helen Hatfield Lee Donald, 69, widow of Victor Hazen Donald, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter, she was the daughter of Mary Ellis Hatfield and the late Lucian Herbert Hatfield Jr.

She was a member of Wise Drive Baptist Church.

Survivors, besides her mother of Sumter include three daughters, Mary Shirley and her husband, Jeffrey, of Sumter, Donna Gray of Marshall, Texas, and Susan Oldhouser of Sumter; a son, Matthew Donald and his wife, Deanna, of Sumter; three stepchildren, Florence Cribb of Florence, Victor Donald Jr. and Mildred "Toots" Branham, both of Sumter; two sisters, Rose Spradley of McBee and Susan Saunders of Fla.; a brother, Mike Hatfield of Greenwood; 18 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Herbert Hatfield III.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Hatfield officiating.

Burial will be in Sumter cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jeffrey M. Shirley, Jeremey "Boogie" Shirley, Jonathan Shirley, Josh Cannon, Adam Hawkins and Jessie Rodriguez.

Honorary pallbearers will be Matthew Donald, Eric Castro, Jamie Shirley and Charlie Brutsch.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home, 104 Hasel St.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

JIMMIE R. CURETON

Mr. Jimmie R. "JC" "Bubba" Cureton, 71, husband of Mrs. Martha J. Leneau Cureton, died Nov. 6, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 25, 1932, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Mr. Henry and Mrs. Lucille Dicks Cureton. Mr. Cureton was reared by the late Mr Stephen and Mrs. Sara Bradford. He attended Sumter County public schools, graduating from Lincoln High School Class of 1951. He received an associate of science degree in business management from Sumter Area Technical College. In 1951, he joined the United States Air Force and did a tour of duty in the Philippines and Germany. After 24 years of service to his country he was honorably discharged in 1974. He received numerous decorations and awards including the Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal with oak Leaf Cluster, for his outstanding service. He was the first African-American supervisor at Becton-Dickinson in Sumter. Jimmie followed the example of Jesus by service faithfully in Emmanuel United Methodist Church for 60 years as chairman of the Finance Committee, chairman of the Trustee Board, member of the Council on Ministry, Pastor Staff Parish Relations Commitee, United Methodist Men, and male and combined choirs. He was also affiliated with several civic organizations where he held leadership roles including Veterans of Foreign War Fraternity Inc. and The Masons Consistory and Shrines Fraternity.

Survivors besides his wife include one son, Steven G. (Tresia B.) Cureton; three grandchildren, Steven G. (Emily), Jessica N. and Deryck J. Cureton; two great-grandchildren, Shakir G. and Ella G. Cureton, all of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Clara M. Chambers and Nevetta C. (William) Ferguson, both of Sumter; an adopted sister, Sara L. Walker of Sumter; one adopted son, the Rev. Curtis Lee (Pearl) Vann of Tallahassee, Fla.; eight sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; two aunts; one foster sister; three foster sons, 10 special friends; and numerous nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents and adopted parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Reginald T. Cureton, and a great-grandson, Shamar G. Cureton.

A wake will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary Inc., 312 S. Main St., Sumter.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Emmanuel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Willie Wilson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. James Blassingame and the Revs. Kay Best, Willie Wright and E.W. McDowell Sr.. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.

Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 2437 Derwent Drive, Sumter.

Job's Mortuary Inc., 312 S. Main St., Sumter, is in charge of the arrangements.

JIM H. GALLOWAY

Jim Henry Galloway, widower of Helen Parrish Galloway, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at his home.

Funeral services will be announced by Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St., Sumter.

EUNICE LUCKEY

BISHOPVILLE -- Eunice Luckey died Nov. 9, 2004, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center, Hartsville.

The family will receive friends at 408 Felder St.

Square Deal Funeral Home will announce the funeral services.

JIM HENRY GALLOWAY

Jim Henry Galloway, 73, widower of Helen Parrish Galloway, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at his home.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Joseph Edward Galloway and the late Elease Ward Galloway. Mr. Galloway was a retired painter.

Surviving are three sisters, Sallie Mae Barkley and Margie G. Geddings, both of Sumter, and Frances G. Thurston of Manning; a stepdaughter, Misty Parrish of Barnwell; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph M. Galloway, Harts Galloway and Thomas Galloway; and a sister, Sadie Hodge.

Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Green Acres cemetery with the Rev. Dale Turner officiating.

The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Margie Geddings, 2875 Underwood Road.

Memorials may be made to Green Acres Assembly of God Church, 537 Lewis Road, Sumter, SC 29154.

CARL C. PRATT Sr.

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- The Rev. Carl Cordell Pratt Sr., 81, of Columbus, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004, at Columbia Doctor's Hospital.

Born in Hillsboro, Tenn., he was the son of the late Ganeral Jackson Pratt Sr. and the late Lillie Lorraine Pratt. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran and the former pastor of the Macon Road Church of the Nazarene. Rev. Pratt had been an ordained minister for the past 47 years and a member of the Macon Road Church of the Nazarene. Rev. Pratt was the pastor of the First Church of the Nazarene in Sumter from 1964 to 1975.

Survivors include his wife, Mary J. Pratt of Columbus; a son, the Rev. Carl C. Pratt Jr. and his wife, Claudia, of Midland, Ga.; a daughter, Linda Joyce "Joy" Pratt Wells and her husband, Marvin, of Brentwood, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Daniel C. Pratt, Carolyn M. Pratt, William C. Pratt, Lindi R. Wells, and Daren R. Wells; and a granddaughter-in-law, Julie M. Pratt.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, G.J. Pratt Jr., Joseph D. Pratt and Fred O. Pratt.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Macon Road Church of the Nazarene. The Rev. H. Eugene Boyett officiated.

Interment was in Parkhill cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Macon Road Church of the Nazarene, 3574 Macon Road, Columbus, GA 31907.

REESE S. MILES

SCRANTON -- The Rev. Reese S. Miles, 75, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, at Carolinas Hospital System, Florence, after an illness.

Rev. Miles was born in Florence County, a son of the late Bob and Carrie Kirby Miles. He was a graduate of Emmanuel College, Franklin Springs, Ga., with further studies at the University of Georgia. He was an ordained minister of the South Carolina Conference of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church Inc. He pastored the following churches from 1953 to 1998: Willow Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church, Florence; Matthews Tabernacle Pentecostal Holiness Church, Lake City; Sumter First Pentecostal Holiness Church, Sumter; Lancaster First Pentecostal Holiness Church, Lancaster; Socastee Pentecostal Holiness Church, Myrtle Beach; Stone Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, Pamplico; and had served as interim pastor from 2000 to 2004 for Camp Branch Pentecostal Holiness Church, Lake City. He served on the conference board for 21 years and served on the general board of education and the general finance board for the International Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Anderson Miles of Scranton; four daughters, Gloria (the Rev. Mark) Evans of Scranton, Rhetta (the Rev. Ed) Hanna of Turbeville, Marcia M. Ramsey and Nelwyn Miles, both of Florence; four sisters, Buena McAllister of Scranton, Rose Kent of Myrtle Beach, Emmie Coker of Turbeville and Barbara Davis of Florence; and five grandchildren, Matthew D. Evans, Joshua Evans, Daniel Evans, all of Scranton, Meredith Hanna and Whitman Reese Hanna, both of Turbeville.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert Miles and Sam Miles; one sister, Carrie Mae Godwin; and a granddaughter, Dana Michelle Ramsey.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Robinson Memorial Auditorium with burial in the Camp Branch Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.

The family will have visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.

Brockington Funeral Home of Lake City is in charge of arrangements.

ODESSA F. PRINCE

GABLE -- Odessa Fortune Prince, 81, widow of Atlee Prince Sr., died Nov. 9, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 12, 1922, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Torrence and Susanna Toney Fortune.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 120 S. Brick Church Road, Gable, SC 29051.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

ALLAN R. GROTH

Allan R. Groth, 68, husband of Judith Laidler Groth, died Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Enderlin, N.D., he was the son of the late Alfred Groth and the late Estella Berland Groth. Mr. Groth was a retired major with the U.S. Air Force with 26 years of service. He was a recipient of the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross with eight Oak Leaf Clusters, The Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with 24 Oak Leaf Clusters, Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Device with two Oak Leaf Clusters. Mr. Groth was a member of the Special Operations Association, Delta Force, The Sumter Camera Club, Sumter Amateur Radio Association and an avid sail plane pilot. He had a believers baptism at Westside Baptist Church, where he attended, in December 2003.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; two sons, Jeff Groth and his wife, Linda, of Raleigh, N.C., and Kevin Groth and his wife, Maria, of Saginaw, Texas; a daughter, Laura Mossell and her husband, Mark, of Sumter; a sister, Berniece Grubb of Seattle; five grandchildren, Justin Groth, Bradley Groth, Matthew Mossell, Jacob Mossell and Mary Katheryn Mossell. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Barbara Ford and Anne Groth.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Westside Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Bourdeaux officiating.

Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with full military honors.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Special Forces Project Delta and Dr. Billy Clowney and Dr. Thomas Hawkey.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 599 Covington Drive.

Memorials may be sent to the Chester Howard-Delta Memorial Fund, 1430 Billings, Houston, TX 77055, or to a charity of one's choice.
