THOMAS MOSS

Thomas Moss, 83, died Nov. 16, 2004, at C.M. Tucker Center, Columbia.

Born Aug. 3, 1921, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Myers Moss and Celeste White Moss Olden.

The family will receive friends at the home of his brother, Willie (Janie) Olden, 23 Van Buren Drive, Sumter.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

HARRIET M. SPANN

EDISON, N.J. -- Harriet Murphy Spann, 92, died Nov. 11, 2004, at JFK Hartwyck, Oaktree Nursing Facility.

Born Aug. 5, 1912, in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late William and Miley Murphy. Mrs. Spann attended Kendall Institute and Lincoln High School, Sumter. Advanced studies were received from Barber Scotia College, Concord, N.C., and Bennett College, Greensboro, N.C. A longtime resident of Sumter, she was a member of Sumter Second Presbyterian Church, where she served in different capacities to include the usher board, willing workers club, United Presbyterian Women Association, senior choir, a deaconess and an elder. Due to her illness, she relocated to Edison in 1989.

Survivors include one daughter, Harriet Loretta (LeVert) Thomas; two grandchildren, Melissa Thomas (Darrell) Newell and Michael K. Thomas; a sister-in-law, Mattie Montgomery of Philadelphia; two nieces, Ruth Murphy of New York City and Helen Woods of Baltimore, Md.; two nephews, Benjamin (Florence) Glover of Bronx, N.Y., and Carl A. (Josephine) Sumter of Eastover; several grandnieces and grandnephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hillside Memorial Park.

Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

BERTHA P. SAMUEL

Bertha "Sweet" Pringle Samuel, 79, widow of James Samuel Sr., died Nov. 12, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born Jan. 13, 1925, in the Britton Brogdon section of Sumter, she was the daughter of the late Sammie Lee Pringle and Rebecca James Pringle. She received her education at Salvage Glover, Lincoln High, William Penn Business School of Philadelphia and Garners Beauty School, where she became a licensed cosmetologist. She was also owner of Samuels Residential Care Facility. She was an active member of Mt. Pisgah AME Church, where she served as class leader, trustee board, president of the pastor's aide club and member of the gospel and mass choirs. She dedicated her life at an early age and accepted Christ as her personal savior and had been a lifelong member of Mt. Pisgah AME Church.

Survivors include three sons, James (Margratte) Samuel of New York City, Willie L. (Pam) Samuel and Rayford (Shirley) Samuel, both of Sumter; one daughter, Shirley Scott of Sumter; 18 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by seven siblings and one son, Ralph Samuel.

The remains will be placed in the church at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Pisgah AME Church, West Bartlette Street, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Juenarrl Keith, pastor, officiating, assisting the Rev. S.R. Miott, the Rev. Edward Roberts and the Rev. Dr. E.W. Palmer.

Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 956 Samuel St., Sumter.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

JAMES ALLAN BROOKES

J. Allan Brookes, age 95, beloved husband of Helen B. King-Brookes for eight beautiful years, entered into eternal paradise Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

J. Allan was the son of the late James Brookes and Mary Elizabeth Purseglove Brookes. He was born into the Episcopal faith, the Parish church in the Parish of Handsworth Woodhouse, a coal mining community near Sheffield, England, on Dec. 31, 1908.

J. Allan came to America at the tender age of 4 so that his father could follow the trade of J. Allan's grandfather in the coal mines located in Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Kentucky.

He rode a train to attend Belaire High School and graduated from Tri-State University of Engineering, located in Angola, Ind., with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering in 1930. J. Allan was a noted member of Tri-State Legacy Club, an honor bestowed upon him to show Tri-State's appreciation for his generosity in establishing the J. Allan Brookes scholarship fund to provide a solid education and make a difference in someone else's life.

Impressed with the trade of his father and grandfather, he took a position with Duquesne Light Company's Warwick Mines. He became associated with Pecand's Mather in 1946 and, at retirement, held the position of general manager of coal operations and his duties included locating and engineering coal properties and construction and operations of deep mines in this country and abroad.

Another title held by J. Allan was director emeritus of the Gallatin Bank in Pennsylvania, where he was a director for 23 years. He also served as director and vice president of the Board of Jefferson National Bank before it was acquired by Gallatin Bank. He also served on the advisory board of Penn State Fagette Campus for an extended time.

J. Allan was active in many Masonic and civic organizations. He became a Mason on Sept. 7, 1944, at Valley Lodge No. 459, Masontown, Pa. He served as master of this lodge in 1950 and received his 50 year pin in 1994. J. Allan was the oldest living past master of his lodge for 54 years. He was a Shriner and member of the Syria Shrine Temple A.A.O.N.M.S at Cheswick, Pa. J. Allan was also a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Uniontown, Pa., and the Council Chapter Consistory, Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Pittsburgh and Uniontown Lodge of Perfection 14 Degree, Uniontown, Pa. He was honored with life memberships from Syria Shrine Temple, Valley Lodge No. 459, and the Scottish Rite. He received an honorary life membership from Sumter Lodge No. 364 A.F.M., Sumter, in 1998.

J. Allan was active in Boy Scout work and was awarded the Silver Beaver for his endeavors. He also was a former member of the Rotary Club and a current member of Kiwanis. He was a member of Sunset Country Club and the Godfather's Golfing Group. He also enjoyed his designation as a Tennessee Squire and he was grateful to Governor Brenthitt for making him a Kentucky Colonel for the part he played in advancing coal mining in that state.

J. Allan was an elder emeritus in Trinity Presbyterian Church in Pennsylvania. Upon relocating to Sumter in 1980, he joined First Presbyterian Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one son, Richard L. Brookes and his wife, Jean, of Sumter; extended family members are Charles and Joan Gibbs, Sharon Brunson, all of Sumter, Matt and Michel Brunson of Pinewood, Lewis and Lisa Brunson of Manning; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one niece, Mary Hillis Pierrier of Pittsburgh; and two cousins, Margarite Weimer and her husband, Dr. Bob Weimer, of Greenwich, Conn., and Col. David Purseglove and his wife, Paula, of Palm Desert, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Hillis C. Brookes; his second wife, Mary Pollock Brookes; one brother, Kenneth David Brookes; and a sister, Mary Elizabeth Brookes.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church in Sumter with the Rev. Dr. William Holmes and the Rev. Dr. Zane Moore officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in Smithfield, Pa.

Pallbearers will be Chuck Fienning, Jim Thornton, Judge Jeffery Young, Herb Laird, Charles Gibbs and Tom Waters.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Mitchell W. Jacocks, Dr. Charles H. White Jr., Dr. Jerry E. Jackson, Dr. Alton Jordan, Dr. Ansel R. McFaddin, Jack Erter, Sheryl Pack, Barbara Waters, Judy Coonce, Lisa Bailey, Minnie Britton, Sheryl Plowden, Ron Prosser, members of the Masonic Order, nobles and their ladies, current and former members of the Godfather's Golfing Group and members of the Kiwanis Club.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Bullock Funeral Home with Masonic Rites at 7:45 p.m. and other times at the residence.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Sumter, 9 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150 or Manning Presbyterian Church.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home for the arrangements.

TONEY REAMES

BISHOPVILLE -- Toney Reames died Nov. 13, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

The family will receive friends at the home, 3945 St. Charles Road, Bishopville.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at New Zion AME Church. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens cemetery.

Boatwright Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

JAMES W. ROBINSON

James W. Robinson, 72, died Nov. 16, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 28, 1932, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Deacon David Robinson and Sarah Dow Robinson.

The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Magnolia R. Williams, 821 N. Main St.

Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

E. DuBOSE BROGDON

E. DuBose Brogdon, 50, husband of Vivian Atkinson Brogdon, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, at Palmetto Health Baptist in Columbia.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of Elizabeth DuBose Brogdon and the late Frederick Earle Brogdon Sr. Mr. Brogdon was president of Sumter Machinery Co. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon, elder and Sunday school teacher. He attended Presbyterian College and the University of South Carolina.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; his mother of Sumter; a daughter, Katherine Stewart Brogdon and a son, Edward DuBose Brogdon Jr., of the home; a brother, Dr. Fred Brogdon Jr. and wife Laura of Sumter; a niece, Meg Hill of Sumter; and a nephew, Tripp Brogdon.

Burial will be private in Hebron Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Zane Moore and the Rev. Mike McGehee officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Fraser-Edmunds Sunday School class, present and former employees of Sumter Machinery Co. and Dr. Charles White.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 9 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC or to Wilson Hall School, 2801 Wise Drive, Sumter, SC 29150.

ROSANNA MARTIN

BISHOPVILLE -- Rosanna Martin died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center, Hartsville.

The family will receive friends at the home, 408 Piedmont Road, Bishopville.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

MARTHA ANN M. OWENS

MANNING -- Martha Ann Mouzon Owens, 55, wife of James Owens, died Nov. 15, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born Feb. 10, 1949, in Manning, she was a daughter of Sallie Williams Mouzon and the late Rev. Johnny Mouzon Sr. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County, graduating from Manning Training School. In her youth, she was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Manning. Later in age, she joined Fellowship Baptist Church on Huggins Street. She was a chef at the Wee Academy on Sunset and Huggins streets.

Survivors besides her husband, James E. Owens of Newark, N.J., and mother, Sallie W. Mouzon of the home, include two sons, Derrick Owens of Newark and Dennis (Natasha) Owens of Manning; three brothers, Robert (Mary) Mouzon and the Rev. Jonathan (Beatrice) Mouzon, both of Manning, Walter (Miriam) Mouzon of Stratford, Conn.; two sisters, Mary (Moses) Wright of Manning and Deloris (Jim) Ganzy of Winter Haven, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Mouzon Jr.

The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Fellowship Baptist Church with the Rev. Jonathan Anderson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Curtis Cantey, the Rev. Carnell Witherspoon and the Rev. Eddie Lesaine. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.

The family will receive friends at her residence, 307 Lantern Lane, Manning.

RUTH P. COLCLOUGH

HIGHPOINT, N.C. -- Ruth Porter Colclough, 73, widow of Phillip "P.C." Colclough, died Nov. 15, 2004, at Sunbridge Nursing Home.

Born June 18, 1931, in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late Deacon David and Annie Sumpter Porter. At an early age, she accepted Christ and later attended Holiness Church in Greensboro, N.C. Her formal education was received in the public schools of Sumter.

Survivors include one son, James (Rosa May) Colclough of Tucson, Ariz.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four sisters, Alma Mitchell of Jersey City, N.J., Rosa Lee Ballard, Aggie Bradley and Nancy Porter, all of Sumter; one brother, Isaih Porter of Sumter; four sisters-in-law, Carrie Mae Colclough, Esther Lee Porter, Doretia Porter, all of Sumter, and Alma Colclough of Philadelphia; two brothers-in-law, Harold Colclough of Layton, Fla., and Clifton Peterson of Sumter; one aunt, Phyllis Sumpter of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one son, Roger Colclough; one sister, Pauline Andrew; five brothers, Thomas, John, James, Joseph and Dave Porter.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in the Parlor of Job's Mortuary Inc., 312 S. Main St., Sumter, with the Rev. Dorothy Maple officiating.

Burial will be in Joshua Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of Virginia Ardis, 19 Newman St., Sumter.

Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.
