THOMAS MOSS

Thomas "Tommy" Moss, 83, died Nov. 16, 2004, at CM Tucker Center, Columbia.

Born Aug. 3, 1921, in Sumter, he was the son of the late Myers and Celeste White Moss. Mr. Moss attended the public schools of Sumter County. An Army veteran, he served in World War II. He retired from the McLaurin and Nettles Co., Sumter.

Survivors include two brothers, Willie "Billy" (Janie) Olden Jr. of Sumter and Charles (Shirley) Olden of Capital Heights, Md.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Mozelle M. Spears.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday in the Parlor of Job's Mortuary Inc., 312 S. Main St., with the Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr. officiating, assisted by the Rev. Hazel Charles.

Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at the home of his brother, Willie "Janie" Olden Jr., 23 Van Buren Drive, Sumter.

Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

JOHN A. PARKER

John A. Parker, husband of Betty Parker, died Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Bullock Funeral Home.

ROLAND JOHNSON

HARTSVILLE -- Roland Johnson, 72, husband of Almena Bradford-Johnson, died Nov. 15, 2004, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence.

He was a son of the late Henry and Lou Haynesworth Johnson. Roland received his education in the Florence County public school system.

Survivors include one daughter, Tiller (Robert) Genovese of Baldwin, N.Y.; three brothers, Jimmie Johnson of Baltimore, Md., Fred and Walter Johnson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one sister, Betty Diggs of Rembert; his mother-in-law, Ida P. Bradford of Hartsville; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Mt. Olive AME Church, Woodrow, with the Rev. Timothy A. Johnson Sr., pastor, eulogist.

Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery, Hartsville.

Young and Young Funeral Home, 711 S. 6th St., Hartsville, is in charge of arrangements.

MAE BELL SMITH

SUMMERTON -- Mae Bell Smith, 70, wife of Charles Earl Smith, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, in Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.

Born Aug. 26, 1934, in Chesterfield, she was a daughter of the late John and Nettie Jones Wright. She was a former waitress and cook and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving besides her husband of West Columbia are a daughter, Brenda (Kyle) Hanna of Gulfport, Miss.; a son, Donald Whittington of McHenry, Miss.; two brothers, Frank Wright of Kershaw and Edward Wright of Jefferson; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday in Shiloh United Methodist Church in West Columbia with the Rev. Michael Smith officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Shiloh United Methodist Church, 547 Gardner's Terrace, West Columbia, SC.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

MATTIE SINKLER

WEDGEFIELD -- Services for Mattie Sinkler, 85, will be held 2 p.m. Sunday in the Nazarene Holiness Church with burial in the church cemetery.

Leevy's Funeral Home, Lower Richland Chapel is in charge.

Surviving are her daughter, Loretta Williams; son, Robert Sinkler; sisters, Hattie Duffie and Nora Johnson; and brother, George Clines.

JONATHAN BENNETT

MANNING -- Jonathan Bennett, 76, husband of Henrietta Pompey Bennett, died Wednesday night, Nov. 17, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born June 19, 1928, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late James Bennett and Irene Reid Bennett. In his youth, he accepted Christ and joined Pine Grove AME Church. After relocating to Philadelphia, Pa., he united with the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army. He retired from ITE Circuit Breaker Co. after 33 years. He was a member of the Shriners and past grand master of the St. John Lodge No. 44. Upon returning to South Carolina, he joined the Pride of Forreston. After marriage, he joined LaMott AME Church.

Survivors besides his wife, Henrietta P. Bennett of the home, include three daughters, Linda, Gail and Jacqueline; two grandsons, Robert and Julian; four sisters, Queenie (Chester) Pompey, Ella Bennett, Leona (Joseph) Robinson and Creola (Paul) Newman; three aunts, Sarah Bradley, Rosa Frierson and Lila Crawford; and one uncle, Richard Reid.

He was preceded in death by a brother, George, and a sister, Shirley.

A wake service will be held with Masonic rites beginning at 5 p.m. today at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Pine Grove AME Church, Kenwood Road (Old River Road), Greeleyville, with the Rev. Melvin Wilson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Rufus Gaymon and the Rev. Frances Gathers.

Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery with Military Detail.

Pallbearers will be Pride of Foreston Masonic Lodge No. 296.

Floral bearers will be Pride of Foreston Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 131.

The family will receive friends at his residence, 403 Gibbons St., Manning.

ABBEGALE G. BILLUPS

SUMMERTON -- Abbegale "Shortcake" Green Billups, 37, wife of James Billups, died Nov. 18, 2004, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital, Columbia.

Born Oct. 4, 1967, in Rimini, she was a daughter of the late Roosevelt Billups and Birnather Green.

The family will receive friends at the home, 14 Second St., Apt. E, Summerton.

Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

JOSEPH H. BUYAN

Joseph Howard Buyan, age 50, husband of nine years to Pamela Ann Harter Buyan, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, at his residence.

Mr. Buyan was born in Columbus, Ohio, the son of the late Joseph and Delores Bissell Buyan. He was a retired USAF master sergeant with 20 years of service during the Vietnam Era and Desert Storm, retiring at Shaw Air Force Base in 1996. He was of the Lutheran faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one stepson, Sean Chapman of Sumter; one stepdaughter, Tonya Chapman of Charleston; one brother, Mark Buyan and his wife, Fran, of Elsworth, Wis.; and one granddaughter, Aubrey Chapman.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service with full military honors will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Owens officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Bullock Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Memorials may be made to Tri-County Hospice, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home for the arrangements.

JAMES W. ROBINSON

James W. Robinson, 72, died Nov. 16, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 28, 1932, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Deacon David Robinson and Sarah Dow Robinson. His early childhood education was in the public schools of Sumter County. After becoming of age, he moved to Washington, D.C., and stayed for a few years. Then moving on to New York, there he met and married Barber Goldsburgh. To this union, one child was born. In March 1998, James moved back to South Carolina. Realizing he had a charge to keep and a God to glorify, he joined the Rafting Creek Baptist Church. He attended church as often as possible but, as his health began to fail, he was not able to attend church as he wished. He kept the church on his mind and God in his heart. He touched many lives in this community and will be sorrowfully missed by all. He was affectionately called "Uncle D" by the people in this community. He was loved by all who were fortunate enough to meet him.

Survivors include two sons, Eugene Dennis of Columbia and Perry Robinson of California; two daughters, Louise R. Cooper (Jimmie) and Sharline Robinson of New York City, N.Y.; two brothers, John Robinson (Sandra) of Detroit, Mich., and the Rev. Joseph Robinson (Clara) of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Martha Dinkins (Robert) of Washington, D.C., Magnolia R. Williams (the Rev. Frank E. Williams Sr.) and Edna Goldston of Sumter; a very dear and lifelong friend, John Eli of Dalzell.

The remains will be placed in the church at noon Sunday.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday from the Rafting Creek Baptist Church, S.C. 261 N., Rembert, with the Rev. Dr. Charles H. Davis, pastor, presiding, the Rev. Willie D. Dennis, eulogist, assisted by the Rev. John F. Kennedy, Minister G. Donnell Williams-Miller, the Rev. Frank E. Williams Jr. and the Rev. James E. Williams.

Burial will be in Rafting Creek Baptist Churchyard cemetery, Rembert.

Pallbearers will be friends and family.

Floral bearers will be friends and family.

The procession will leave at 12:15 p.m. from the home of his sister, Magnolia R. Williams, 821 N. Main St.

JANIE MAE DAVIS

MAYESVILLE -- Janie Mae Davis, 43, wife of Robert Davis, died Nov. 18, 2004, at her residence, 5360 Neighborhood Road, Mayesville.

Born May 17, 1961, in Lee County, she was the daughter of the late Eddie Samuel and Everlena Toney and stepdaughter of the late William Fred Toney. Mrs. Davis attended the public schools of Sumter County and was a 1981 graduate of Mayewood High School. She became a diligent Bible student.

Survivors besides her husband include five loving sisters, Pearllena (Aubrey) Lewis of Severn, Md., Annie Bell Montgomery of Mayesville, Evelyn Samuel, Dilene S. (Michael) Hodge and Tiffany D. Samuel, all of Sumter; 13 brothers, James Peterson, Charles Peterson, Paul Toney, all of the home, William Toney Jr., Elijah (Evelyn) Toney, Jerry (Linda) Jennings, Roland Samuel, Iscca Samuel, all of Sumter, Silas (Nyree) Toney of Fayetteville, N.C., Edward Samuel of North Carolina, Dennis Samuel of Mayesville, David Samuel of Bishopville and Willie Samuel of Columbia; one stepson, Rodney Peebles of Tennessee; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Leroy Toney, Eddie Davis and Harry L. Samuel.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Parlor of Job's Mortuary Inc., 312 S. Main St., Sumter.

Burial will be in Goodwill Presbyterian Church cemetery, Mayesville.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 5360 Neighborhood Road, Mayesville.
