JOE A. BAYS

Joe Alfred Bays, age 72, beloved husband of 50 years to Carolyn Grace Chassereau Bays, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at his residence.

Mr. Bays was born in Trosper, Ky., the son of the late Fred Bays and Mossie Carter Bays Downey. He was retired from Lockheed and the U.S. Air Force as a master sergeant. He was a member of the Midland Retired Military Association and a former Mason and Shriner. He attended Shaw Heights Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Timothy Bays and his wife, Deborah, of Sumter and Joe A. Bays Jr. and his wife, Chris, of Rouge Mont, N.C.; two daughters, Shelby L. Mills and her husband, Harold, of Sumter and Jennifer B. Tankersley and her husband, Ronald, of Gilbert; three brothers, Fred Bays Jr., Kenneth Hembre and Jerry Bays; four sisters, Mildred Kronenbitter, Jeanette Moran, Geraldine Smith and Joanne Bruner; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Earl Downey; stepmother, Edith Bays; two brothers, Charles W. Willis and Robert Bays.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with the Rev. Victor Cheek, the Rev. Dale Myers and the Rev. Olin Chassereau officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Daniel Chassereau, Henry J. Chassereau, Roger Hood, David Hood, Mike Ray and Don Forsberg.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bullock Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Harold and Shelby Mills.

Memorials may be sent to the Alzheimers Association, Mid-State S.C. Chapter, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202-7044.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home for the arrangements.

ALICE G. JUNIOUS

SUMMERTON -- Dyson's Home for Funerals sorrowfully regrets to announce the passing of the late Alice Green Junious, who entered into eternal rest on Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Marion Green and Camilla Thomas Green. She was the wife of Alec "Sonny" Junious.

The family will receive friends at the home, 2159 Lilly Martin Road, "River Road Community, " Summerton.

ST. CHARLES -- Yancy Paul Kirven Sr., 52, husband of Pranee Rangdit Kirven, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Robert LaCoste Kirven Jr. and the late Harriett Cummins Kirven. He was a member of Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church.

Survivors besides his wife of Mayesville include a daughter, Laura Kirven of Mayesville; a son, Staff Sgt. Yancy Paul Kirven Jr. of Fayetteville, N.C.; a sister, Lynn Mathis and her husband, David, of Bishopville; four brothers, Robert LaCoste Kirven III of Ohio, Mason George Kirven Sr. and his wife, Rita, of Mayesville, Timothy Kirven Sr. and his wife, Debbie, of Mayesville, and Harry C. Kirven of Lynchburg; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Suzette T. Kirven.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church.

Burial will be in the Bethany cemetery at Turkey Creek.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home and other times at the home, 5631 St. Charles Road, Mayesville, and at the home of his daughter, 243 Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Road, Mayesville.

Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

CHRISHONDA W. VAN BUREN GREGG

Chrishonda Willet Van Buren Gregg, 31, died Nov. 27, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 8, 1973, in Sumter, she was the daughter of Willie and Patricia Van Buren Gregg. Chrishonda was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. A 1992 graduate of Sumter High School, she sang on the choir and played the cello. At the age of eight, she had her first encounter with the Holy Spirit at Samaria Temple and continued her worship at Fellowship Outreach Ministries under the leadership of Pastor V.J. Bennett. For 11 years, she was employed by Santee Print Works.

Survivors besides her parents include two children, Keonia Hunter and Clifford R. Jenkins; one sister, Laschelle Simon; two brothers, Michael (Lillian) Harvin of New York, N.Y., and Willie Wilson of Mayesville; maternal grandparents, Willie (Modestine) Van Buren Sr.; paternal grandmother, Sara Gregg; seven aunts, Pastor Katie (Ronnie) Heyward, Pauline (Michael) Anderson, Assistant Pastor Frances (Willie) Washington Jr., Hattie (James) McFadden, Evangelist Gloria Smalls, all of Sumter, Mablene Goodley of Philadelphia, Pa., and Evangelist Lori (Elder Patrick) Hayes of Carrollton, Md.; 10 uncles, Joe (Connie) Van Buren, Willie (Elsie) Van Buren of Philadelphia, Pa., Allen (Deloris) Van Buren of Jacksonville, Fla., Larry (Deloris) Vanburen of Tyler, Texas, James Smith of Decatur, Ga., Henry Gregg, Robert (Bernandine) Gregg, Perry Van Buren Sr., all of Sumter, Tommy Gregg of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Alphonza (Cassandra) Van Buren; foster brother, Tony Myers; devoted cousins, Tammie (Sampson) Maxfield, Vikki Zubaly and Lamecha Johnson; extended family members, Bobby (Ruby) Hunter and Kevin Hunter, both of Columbia, Larry (Deloris) Myers of Bishopville, Minister Willie (Daisy) Baxter; special friends, Will Earl Baxter, Minister Melissa Baxter and Eric Baxter, both of Manning, Viola Van Buren of Columbia and Patricia Van Buren of Sumter; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, George Gregg Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Beulah AME Church with the Rev. O'Neal Miller, pastor, assisted by Elder Essie L. Bolden, the Rev. Larry Barnes, Pastors Katie Heyward and Virnetta J. Bennett, Assistant Pastor Frances Washington and Evangelist Betsy Watlington. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 36 Neal St.

ROSA M. HARRINGTON

BENNETTSVILLE -- Rosa M. Harrington, wife of the Rev. Freddie Harrington, died Nov. 28, 2004.

A wake will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at the residence, 2750 N. Main St., Sumter.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Word of Life Christian Center Ministries, 1300 W. Main St., Bennettsville.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 2750 N. Main St., Sumter.

WILLIE LEE NATHANIEL

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Willie Lee "Pee Wee" Nathaniel died Nov. 24, 2004.

He was a son of the late Macdonia and Marie Nathaniel and brother of Elder Robert Nathaniel.

Funeral services will be held today in Brooklyn.

JOE SIMON

PINEWOOD -- Joe "Shing" Simon, 85, husband of Julia Brown Simon, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Nov. 16, 1919, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Alex and Susan Simon. His education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a member of Friendship AME Church. He was a retired farmer and carpenter and was a member of Silver Masonic Lodge No. 35 F&AM.

Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Ricky Simon of Summerton and Nathaniel Simon of Panola; four daughters, Annie Sue Dease of Severn, Md., Julia Reed of Pinewood, Joann Ragin of Alcolu and Deloris Simon of New Haven, Conn.; two sisters, Naomi Neal of Sumter and Sadie Adger of Summerton; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, William Simon and Isaac Temoney; two brothers, Roy and Moses Simon; and a sister, Lillie Griffin.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Friendship AME Church, Silver community, with the Rev. Dr. Henry Cohen, the Rev. Joseph Postell and the Rev. Roosvelt Boyd. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 1360 Hardwood Drive, Panola community, Pinewood.

HORACE E. GREEN

Horace Eddie Green, husband of Anna S. Green, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at Mariner Health of Sumter West.

Born in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Eddie and Nellie Rembert Green.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 512 Dicks St.

Funeral services will be announced by Scriven Funeral Home.

LOUISE OAKES

Mrs. Louise Oakes, 89, departed this earthly life on Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born March 7, 1915, in Dalzell, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Hattie Knox Jackson.

She was united in holy matrimony to the late Mr. Theodore Oakes Sr.

She is survived by five daughters, Ruby (Moses) Graham of Buffalo, N.Y., Thelma Tyre and Mable (Columbus) Smith, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., Juanita Oakes of the home and Louise Williams of Atlanta, Ga.; four sons, Theodore Oakes Jr., Cleveland (Jean) Oakes and Hasper Oakes, all of Brooklyn and Harrison (Ginger) Oakes of New Jersey City; two brothers, Harrison Jackson of Santee and Arthur Jackson of Long Island, N.Y.; 64 grandchildren; 92 great-grandchildren; 47 great-great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Moses and Wiley Oakes; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild and numerous brothers and sisters.

We will miss her greatly and her love will always and forever be appreciated.

She will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.

Services for Mrs. Oakes will be held on Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Sumter Funeral Service with the Rev. M.G. Walters officiating, assisted by Elder Wayne Brunson. Burial will follow in Evergreen cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the home, 26 Rast St., Apt. 6.

The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the home.

Pallbearers and flower bearers will be grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. is in charge of the arrangements.

SARAH HAYNESWORTH

Sarah Haynesworth, 57, wife of Harold Haynesworth, died Nov. 29, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born March 18, 1947, in Camden, she was a daughter of Buster Otis Cooke and Ellen Carter Johnson.

The family will receive friends at her home, 1046 Dibert St.

Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

SALLIE B. CROSKEY

Sallie B. Hunter Croskey, widow of Cleveland Croskey Sr., died Nov. 28, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Horatio, she was the daughter of the late Cordose and Ellen Seawright Hunter. Mrs. Croskey was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior. She was a faithful member of High Hills AME Church and later became a member of Union Station AME Church, where she served on the Stewardess Board and other auxiliaries in the church. For many years, she was employed as a crossing guard for the Sumter school system.

Survivors include three daughters, Julia (James) Robinson of Atlanta, Ga., Flossie (Jim) Hodges and Thelma Morris, both of Sumter; three sons, Eugene (Lena) Hunter of Capital Heights, Md., Cleveland (Ruthie Mae) Croskey Jr. of Laurelton, N.Y., and James (Janice) Croskey of Sumter; one sister, Julia McFadden of Sumter; 25 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Alice Croskey of New York; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Rutherford; a special daughter-in-law, Patricia Croskey; a grandson, James Robinson Jr.; three sisters, Mary Brown, Louise Tompson and Helen Blanding; and two brothers, Cordose Hunter Jr. and John Hunter.

Wake will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary Inc., 312 S. Main St.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Union Station AME Church with the Rev. Friendly J. Gadson, pastor.

Burial will be in Walker cemetery.

The body will lie in state at 1 p.m. Thursday.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 238 Red and White St.

Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.
