Ollie Morris Perry, 83, of Newberry, formerly of 2444 S.C. Highway 395, Newberry, widow of Thomas B. Perry, died Tuesday, August 14, 2007, at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
She was born on March 18, 1924 in the Stoney Hill Section of Newberry County, a daughter of the late John Vernon “Bud” and Leona Livingston Morris.
She was a homemaker and a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Perry is survived by a daughter, Lucy P. Moates of Pomaria; four sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald T. and Joan Perry of Newberry, Robert S. and Francelle Perry of West Columbia, James V. and Sara Perry of Chester, and Danny L. and Karen Perry of Mt. Pleasant; a sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Preston Kunkle of Newberry; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a grandson, Michael Perry; a sister, Mary Kinard; and two brothers, Ned Morris and Richard Morris.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 PM Thursday at Bethany United Methodist Church. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.

Dorothy “Dot” Wade Watson

Dorothy “Dot” Wade Watson, 87, of Springfield Place, Newberry SC, widow of J. Drake Watson, died Tuesday, August, 7, 2007 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
She was born on April 15, 1920 in Timmonsville, SC, a daughter of the late Jesse Deshields and Dorothy Virginia McCormick Wade. She was a graduate of Timmonsville High School and a 1942 Graduate of Lander College. She was a member of Aveleigh Presbyterian Church and was a strong supporter of the Newberry YMCA.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, J. Drake Watson Jr. and Katharine Richards Watson of Richmond VA; and three grandchildren, James R. Watson, Dorothy A. Watson, and J. Drake Watson, III.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday at the Aveleigh Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Dr. Mitchell VanMeter.

Juanita Hunter Long, 88, of Newberry, widow of L. Hubert Long, died Saturday, August 4, 2007 at Springfield Place.
Mrs. Long was born on July 28, 1919 in the St. Luke’s Community of Newberry County, a daughter of the late J. Raymond and Sue Lester Hunter.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law,, Jennie L. and Jackie Runyan of Simpsonville; five sons and three daughters-in-law, Elliott Long of Cross Hill, Gerald Long of Chapin, Derald and Ruth Long of Flowery Branch, GA, and Heber and Margaret Long and James and Janet Long all of Newberry; a sister Suzette Frick of Chapin; a brother, Ray Hunter of Prosperity; 19 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a brother, Lester Hunter and her step-mother, Jennie L. Hunter.
Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 AM Wednesday at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 6:30 to 8:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.

Ernest C. “Chris” Crumpton

Ernest C. “Chris” Crumpton, 69, of 916 Lindsay Circle, Newberry, died Tuesday, September 25, 2007 at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.
He was born on March, 3, 1938 in Newberry, a son of the late H. Luther and Lorene Wicker Crumpton. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, retired long haul truck driver and was a member of the Cayce Moose Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Raynell Rinehart Crumpton of the Newberry; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Ernie Crumpton and John Crumpton both of Pelion and Rev. Mark and Natalie Crumpton of Lexington; four grandchildren, Tyler Crumpton, Meghan Crumpton, Emmaly Crumpton, and Alexandria Douberley; three sisters; Bessie Tarver, Frances Humphries and Camelia Brewer all of Newberry; and a sister-in-law, Betsy Crumpton of Whitmire. He was predeceased by three sisters, Doshia Gentry, Doris Smith, and Mavis Tarver and a brother, Thomas L. Crumpton.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 PM Friday at Faith Assembly of God by the Rev. Mitchell Burriss with interment in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.

Leonard C. Hall, 79, of SC Highway 34 & 121, Silverstreet, died Monday, September 17, 2007 at his residence.
Mr. Hall was born on April 18, 1928 in Edgefield, a son of the late M. Ramey and Effie Scott Hall. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a retired employee of Senn Freight Lines. He was a member of Epting Memorial United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 24, and the Forty & Eight.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline Jones Hall of Silverstreet; daughters and son-in-law, Linda and Randy Crews, Joyce Hall and Lynda Ruff all of Newberry; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Donna Hall of Newberry; four grandchildren, Randy C. Crews, Jr., Tammy Lynn Pilgrim, William L. C. Crews, and Bryan Hall; six great grandchildren, Dakota Pilgrim, Cody Pilgrim, Nicholas Crews, Hayden Hall, Maddie Crews, and Joshua Crews; and four brothers, Lester Hall of Graniteville, Harold Hall of Spartanburg, William Hall of North Augusta, and Bartley Hall of Trenton. He was predeceased by a grandson, Joseph Hall, a sister, Marie Turner, and brothers, Edward Hall, Bruce Hall, and James Lee Hall
Funeral service were conducted at 4:00 PM Wednesday at Epting Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. David Inman, Rev. Tony Rowell, and Rev. Eric Fink. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation was from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence, SC Highway 34 & 121, Silverstreet.

David F. Bennett

David Francis Bennett, 61, of Ripley Station Road in Columbia, died Monday, September 10, 2007 at Lexington Medical Center.
Born in Newberry on November 30, 1945 to the late Ernest and Frances Bennett, he was the beloved grandson of the late Frank M. and Kizzie H. Schumpert and J. Floyd and Nellie S. Bennett.
David graduated from Newberry High School and received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and remained a loyal Gamecock throughout his life. He also served his country as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
Due to his declining health, David recently retired from the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulations where he served as Administrator of the Manufactured Housing Board.
David is survived by his wife, Dee Aldridge Bennett; two daughters, Leigh Bennett-Conner (Andrew) of Norcross, Georgia, and Sara Bennett (Scott) of Newberry; stepson Zack Winslow (She’) of Lexington; grandsons Donovan Bennett, Duncan Bennett-Conner, Lincoln Winslow; granddaughter Chloe Thackeray; one brother, James E. Bennett (Felicia) of Lexington; a sister, Linda Smith (Cecil) of Lugoff and nieces, nephews, and cousins who will mourn his passing. He was pre-deceased by one brother, Thomas W. Bennett and sister-in-law Gloria Bennett of Prosperity. David is the great-nephew of Elizabeth Miller of Lexington, and the nephew of Doris Gardner of Palm Springs, California.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 PM Thursday at the O’Neal Street United Methodist Church, Newberry, where David was christened and baptized, a church, which holds special significance for him. Burial will be in the family plot in Rosemont Cemetery, Newberry, with Military Honors.
The family did receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry.

Dr. Lucille E. Wassman

Dr. Lucille E. Wassman, 87, of 2503 Henry Ave., Newberry, SC died Thursday, September 6, 2007 at Springfield Place in Newberry.
Dr. Wassman was born on Feb., 22, 1920 in Cedar Lake, IN, a daughter of the late Fred and Emma Behrens Wassman.
She received her bachelor and master degrees in Education from Indiana University and her Ed.D in Education from Columbia University. She taught in the elementary schools in Indiana and Illinois from 1942 until 1961; was an instructor at the National College of Education in Evanston, IL from 1963 to 1967; Asst. Professor of Education at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee from 1967 to 1971; the Executive Director of Lutheran Deaconess Association in Valparaiso, IN from 1971 to 1975; Associate Professor of Education at Birmingham Southern College from 1975 to 1977; and was Associate Professor of Education at Newberry College from 1977 to 1985 where she also served as the Coordinator of Early Childhood/ Elementary Education.
Dr. Wassman was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer where she had been involved in many programs and activities including teaching adult Sunday School Classes. She also taught Adult Sunday School Classes at White Oak Manor and the Lowman Home. She was very active in the American Association of University Women. She served several terms as the President of the Newberry Chapter and was the S.C. State President from 1990 to 1992, and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.
She is survived by four nieces, Clarice “Maggie” Segert of St. John, IN, Marcella Reichert of Lowell, IN, Rosemary Hesemann of Moscow Mill, MO, and Ruth Stege of Varna, IL and three nephews, Rodger Teske of Beecher, IL, Clifford Bernhard of Lowell, IN, and Albert Seehausen of Grand Island, FL. She was predeceased by six sisters, Lillian Bernhard, Linda Junge, Helen Seehausen, Margaret Seehausen, Marie Grieving, and Clara Teske
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday, September 9 at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer by the Rev. Marion Clark. Interment services were at 10:00 AM Tuesday, September 18, 2007 in the Graceland Cemetery Mausoleum in Valparaiso, IN. by the Rev. Don Williams
