EDITH Y. BROWN

Edith Yates Brown, 93, widow of Heyward J. Brown, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late William Yates and the late Mamie Y. Yates. Mrs. Brown was a member of New Salem Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Edith Brown June and husband, Bobby, of Sumter; five grandchildren, Robert H. June and wife, Karen, of Conway, Royce P. June and wife, Amanda, of Latta, Ronald S. June and wife, Lori, of Sumter, Renee J. Inman and husband, Joseph, of Rock Hill and Rebecca "Becky" J. Whittle and husband, Kevin, of Florence; and six great-grandsons.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Dora Y. Brown.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert N. Rivers officiating.

Burial will be in the Brunson cemetery at Brogdon.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at 2515 Boots Branch Road.

Memorials may be made to New Salem Baptist Church, 2500 W. Oakland Ave., Sumter, SC 29154.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St., Sumter, is in charge of the arrangements.

HORACE E. GREEN

Horace Eddie Green, husband of Anna Scriven Green, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at Mariner Healthcare of Sumter.

Born in Sumter County, on Aug. 19, 1927, he was the son of the late Eddie and Nellie Green. Mr. Green was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. He also served in the U.S. Armed Forces. He was a faithful member of St. James United Methodist Church in Sumter until his health failed. He was a member of the choir and served as a class leader. He loved God, his family and his friends. He was a good neighbor and friend to everyone who knew him.

Horace leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife, Anna Scriven Green; two sons, Jackie (Mary Lynn) of Philadelphia, Pa., and Ernest (Essie) of Farmville, Va.; four daughters, Helen Hewitt and Anna Pickens of Columbia, Georgianna Robinson and Linda Green, both of Staten Island, N.Y.; seven sisters, Vermell Cabagestalk of Pittsburgh, Pa., Julia Mae Glover of Dalzell, Gussie Johnson, Minnie Brooks, Maggie (Leroy) Rose, Georgia Josey and Dorothy Williams, all of Sumter; one brother, Frank (Carolyn) Green of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by a son, Horace Green Jr.; three brothers, Charlie Green, Willie B. Green and Harold Green.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at St. James United Methodist Church, 720 Broad St., with the pastor, the Rev. Nathan McClennon, officiating, assisted by Pastor Sammy C. Simmons, Pastor Manning Scriven and Racheal Glover. Burial will follow in the Dicks cemetery.

Pallbearers will be nephews and friends and floral bearers will be nieces and friends.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 512 Dicks St.

Scriven Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

CARROLL E. NEWMAN Sr.

Carroll Edwin Newman Sr., 54, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, at his home.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of Louise Barnes Newman and the late James Epps Newman Sr. He was a member of Concord Presbyterian Church and was employed by Newman Construction Inc. He served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1976 and was a Vietnam War veteran.

Survivors besides his mother include two sons, Carroll Edwin Newman Jr. and James Woodrow Newman and his wife, Stacy, all of Sumter; a grandson, James Woodrow Newman Jr.; two brothers, James E. Newman Jr. and his wife, Edie, and Terry L. Newman and his wife, Linda, all of Sumter; two nieces, Cynthia Newman and Kim Saunders; three nephews, Jim Newman, Mark Newman and Lee Newman; and a very special friend, Ann Prescott.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Concord Presbyterian Church with the Rev. William Albert and the Rev. Jerry Watson officiating.

Burial will be in the Concord Presbyterian Church cemetery with military honors.

Pallbearers will be Lee Newman, Mark Newman, Tom Crites, Jim Newman, Claude Newman, Lennie Newman, Bobby Jones and Larry Lasseigne.

Honorary pallbearers will be employees of Newman Construction Inc., CNA Construction Inc., Dexter Mims and Tommy Newman.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the family home on Myrtle Beach Highway.

Memorials may be made to Concord Presbyterian Church, 3350 E. Brewington Road, Sumter, SC 29153, the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210, or to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

EVELYN DURANT

GABLE -- Evelyn Hudson Wheeler Durant, 86, widow of John Wheeler and Westley Durant, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2004, at Mariner Health of Sumter West.

Born March 22, 1918, in Mayesville, she was a daughter of the late Jenkins Hudson and Dora Fleming Hudson. She was educated in the public schools of Lee County. She joined Ebenezer AME Church of Mayesville in her youth and later became a member of Melina Presbyterian Church, where she served on the Missionary Board. She was also a member of Jordan Chapel Order of Eastern Star Lodge No. 237.

Survivors include two daughters, Alice (Chilton Charles) Thomas of Baltimore, Md., and Betty Brayboy (John) Pearson of Jacksonville, Fla.; two brothers, Slyvester Hudson and Isaiah Hudson, both of Baltimore, Md.; three sisters, Victoria King of Brooklyn, N.Y., Olive Hampton of Mayesville and Sallie Thomas of Baltimore, Md.; several stepchildren; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.

The remains will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Melina Presbyterian Church (USA), Sardina, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, assisting the Rev. Richard Baxter. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Charles and Alice Thomas, 3701 Farmington Road, Gable.

SARAH C. HAYNESWORTH

Sarah Carter Haynesworth, 57, wife of 41 years to Harold Haynesworth, died Nov. 29, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born March 18, 1947, in Camden, she was a daughter of the late Ellen Carter Johnson and Buster Otis Cook and the stepdaughter of Henry Johnson. She was educated in the public school system of Kershaw County. At an early age, she joined St. John Baptist Church, where she was a faithful member of the usher board, pastor aid club and senior choir.

Survivors include three sons, Jerome (Sarah) Haynesworth and Leroy Haynesworth, both of Sumter, and Anthony Haynesworth of Jasper, Ga.; two daughters, Loretta (Daniel) Gailliard and Jennifer (Samuel) Joe of Sumter; three brothers, Michael (Angie) Cook and Otis Cook, both of Camden, and Tommy L. Cook of Florida; 10 sisters, Eva (Jewell) Lilliard of Sumter, Margie Thompson, Dorothy (Moses) Johnson, Alice Boykin, Mary (Reginald) Kelley, Josephine Reynold, Elizabeth Johnson, Diane (John) Pollard, Louise Cook and Betty Jean Cook, all of Camden; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Lucile Cook; and one brother, Harold Cook.

A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St.

The remains will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday from the St. John Baptist Church, 1315 Springfield Road, Camden, with the Rev. Richard James Sr., pastor, eulogist. Burial will be in the St. John Baptist Churchyard cemetery, Camden.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Floral bearers will be nieces.

The procession will leave at 2:15 p.m. from her home, 1046 Dibert St.

WILLIAM RICHARDSON

Dyson's Home for Funerals and St. Peter AME Church, Rimini, along with the Rev. Larry Davis, pastor, announce funeral services for the late William "Strapper Bubba" Richardson will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter AME Church, Rimini, with the Rev. Larry Davis, pastor, officiating. Final resting place will be Mt. Pleasant UME Church cemetery, Panola.

William "Strapper Bubba" Richardson, age 77, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at Lake Marion Nursing Home, Summerton.

Born on Nov. 27, 1926, he was a son of the late George Isaac and Ada Washington. He was reared and nurtured by his grandmother, the late Susan "Strapper" Richardson. He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a faithful member of St. Peter AME Church, Rimini, for more than 40 years. While a member, he served as a steward, trustee and a member of the male chorus, along with many other boards and committees. He retired from Georgia Pacific Lumber Co. He was also a faithful and devoted employee of Dyson's Home for Funerals, Summerton.

He leaves to grow from his legacy, seven sons, Jeremiah (Martha) Brunson of Brunswick, Ga., George (Bobby Nell) Wilson of Manning, Leroy Richardson, Leon (Pamela) Wilson, Earl Wilson and Sam Wilson, all of Summerton, Sidney (Sharon) Stukes of Thomasville, N.C.; three daughters, Debra Wilson and Mary Wilson, both of Summerton, and Martha Wilson of Jacksonville, Fla.; four sisters, Bertha Washington of Longs, Ethelrine York, Pastor Alafaye Vickers and Mary Sanders, all of Tampa, Fla.; three brothers, Bishop Joseph Washington and Herbert Washington, both of Tampa, Fla., and Rufus Washington of Longs; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a special friend, Ella Carter of Summerton; the Dyson's Home for Funerals Family; along with a host of other close relatives and friends.

The family is receiving friends at the home of his son, Leon Wilson, Washington Street, Summerton.

Professional services entrusted to Dyson's Home for Funerals, Summerton.

ROBERT E. WRIGHT

Robert Earl "Randolph" Wright, 59, died Dec. 2, 2004, at 2451 Forest Drive, Columbia.

Born Nov. 3, 1945, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Solomon Wright and Mattie Lee Butler McMillian.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 132 H St.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

GEORGE I. ROBERTS

George I. Roberts, 71, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at a local nursing center.

Services will be announced by the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St., Sumter.

ELSIE RICHARDSON

SUMMERTON -- Elsie Blanding Walters Richardson, 97, widow of Brutus Walters and Andrew Richardson, died Dec. 1, 2004, at Windsor Manor Nursing Facility, Silver community, Summerton.

Born April 8, 1907, in Summerton, Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Lawrence Blanding and Harriett Nelson Blanding. She received her formal education in the public schools of Summerton in Clarendon County. She was a member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as a missionary, YWCA Chapter No. 12, Order of Eastern Star Queen of the South Chapter No. 304.

Survivors include one son, Neolius (Elenora) Felder of Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters, Suesther Richardson and Catherine Richardson, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a granddaughter she reared as her own, Carolet (Edward) Richardson Thomas of Summerton; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, 4319 Rowe Drive, Davis Crossroad community of Summerton, with the Rev. David Lawson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. James Blanding, the Rev. Charlie Thomas, the Rev. Albert Thomas, the Rev. Marco Johnson and the Rev. Kenneth Richardson. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of her granddaughter, Carolet L. (Edward) Richardson Thomas, 3196 Wash Davis Road, Summerton.

ELEANOR V. JORDAN

Eleanor V. Jordan, 80, widow of Ralph E. Jordan Sr., died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at a local nursing center.
