VELMA L. MILLER

Velma Louise Miller, 61, widow of Samuel A. Miller, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, in Jacksonville, Fla.

Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Elbert Miles Turner and the late Henrietta Viola Hudson Turner.

Surviving are two sons, Randy Miller of Jacksonville, Fla., and Frank Miller of Kingsland, Ga.; two daughters, Sharon Holloway of Woodbine, Ga., and Kathy Rogers of Jacksonville; two sisters, Ruby Pritchard of Sumter and Janette Cox of Jacksonville; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Thomas Turner, William Turner and Charles Turner; and a sister, Mary Ann Snider.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.

Burial will be in the Bethel Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of Hank Snider, 1046 Marian Lane.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St., Sumter, is in charge of the arrangements.

GRACIE C. STUKES

SUMMERTON -- Gracie Clark Stukes, 66, died Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born July 21, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Erbie Clark and Louise Cooper Clark. Gracie was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. She was a member of Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the senior choir and missionary department. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star New Light Chapter No. 254 and the YWCA Lodge.

Survivors include her husband, Lendburg Stukes of the home; three sons, Lionel (Glinn) Stukes and Elvin (Velecia) Stukes, both of Summerton, and David (Karen) Stukes of Miami, Fla.; three daughters, Arthelia (Johnny) Waiters and Jacqueline (Nathaniel) Hillard, both of Summerton, and Linda (Charlie) Stukes of Manning; three brothers, Howard and Ruben Clark of Buffalo, N.Y., and Perlie Clark of Manning; two sisters, Doris C. Williams of Miami, Fla., and Mildred Chick of New Jersey; 13 grandchildren, one of whom she reared as her own, Rodney (Christina) Stukes of Summerton.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

Funeral service will be held at noon Wednesday at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church, Summerton, with the Rev. Dr. William T. Johnson officiating, assisted by the Rev. Lonnie Robinson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The remains will be placed in the church at 11 a.m.

The procession will leave at 11:30 a.m. from the residence, 1043 Doughty Road, Summerton.

The family will receive friends at 1043 Doughty Road, Summerton.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton is in charge of the arrangements.

THELMA B. GOODMAN

LYNCHBURG -- Thelma Brown Goodman, 85, widow of Thomas Goodman Sr., died Dec. 10, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 3, 1919, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Harry Bowman Brown and Lula Thompson Brown. During her childhood, she attended St. James United Methodist Church, Sumter. Years later, her father was assigned pastor of Asbury United Methodist Church, Lynchburg, where she served as a lifelong member until her death. The capacities in which she served included, but were not limited to, usher and trustee boards, senior choir, communication and membership secretary, youth coordinator and United Methodist Women. Because of her service in the church and community, various church boards and organizations recognized her.

Mrs. Thelma, as she was often and affectionately called, was a community advocate and very instrumental in the structuring of community-based organizations such as the old and new Shiloh Community Centers. Thelma was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. After graduating high school, she attended Sumter Technical College (Central Carolina Technical College) and completed the certificate program for food services and supervision. She was an employee of Sumter School District 2 as a manager of cafeteria services at Eastern School for many, many years. Her youthful spirit and personality would not allow her to sit home and enjoy retirement. Because of this, she sought post retirement employment and was a part-time transportation specialist for Santee Senior Services.

Survivors include one son, Thomas Goodman Jr. (Louise); four daughters, Lula M. Burch (Arthur), Betty A. Mitchell, Margaret G. Hogan and Thomasena Goodman of Lynchburg; a grandson she adopted and raised as a son, Roger D. Goodman of Atlanta, Ga.; a granddaughter she raised as a daughter, Tarah C. Johnson (R.J.) of Charleston; a daughter-in-law, Hattie Goodman of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Margaret Muldrow Brown of Sumter; a dedicated niece, Barbara J. Dupree of Sumter; a devoted friend, Garfield Miller of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one son, Raymond Goodman Sr.; one sister, Margurite B. Mickens; and five brothers, Leroy, Cleveland, Harry Jr., Lewis and Rainey Brown.

A wake will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary Inc., 312 S. Main St., Sumter.

Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. John C. Barr, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Goodman cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Thursday.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 4770 Narrow Paved Road, Lynchburg, SC 29080.

Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

HELEN B. BUTLER

MANHATTAN, N.Y. -- Helen Briggs Butler, 81, widow of Byron Briggs, died Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at her residence in Manhattan.

A daughter of the late Joe Briggs and Frizel Olive Briggs, she was born May 13, 1923, in Clarendon County. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In her youth, she was a member of Historical Liberty Hill AME Church. After relocating to New York, she joined Mount Bethel AME Church, where she served in various organizations.

Survivors include one daughter, Frizel Briggs of Bronx, N.Y.; one adopted daughter, Carrie (Albert) Brailsford of Sumter; two grandchildren, Eurydice and Lewis Mangual, both of Bronx, N.Y.; two sisters-in-law, Lucille Briggs and Bell Briggs, both of Summerton.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.

The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Historical Liberty Hill AME Church with the Rev. Melvin Capers officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence on 3rd Street in Summerton.

The procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the residence.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton is in charge of arrangements.

HARVEY LEE CRAVEN

Harvey Lee Craven, 71, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004, at his home.

Born in Efland, N.C., he was the son of the late Odell W. Craven and the late Elsie Terrell Craven.

Mr. Craven was retired from the United States Air Force and he was a mason.

Surviving are a son, Kenneth Craven and his wife, Kathryn, of Savannah, Ga.; a daughter, Cindi Ferguson of Bishopville; three sisters, Vera Eaddy of Central Point, Ore., Clara Allen and Linda Wheeler, both of Hillsborough, N.C.; three grandchildren, Lindsay Menser of Sumter, Adam Ferguson of Sumter and Lleu Craven of Savannah; and one great-granddaughter, Aubrey Menser of Sumter.

Mr. Craven was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherri Craven.

Graveside services with full military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with Dr. Clarence Elmore officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital.

META D. GORDON

Meta Josephine Dicus Gordon, 80, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at her home.

Born in Waynesville, N.C., she was a daughter of the late James Perry Dicus Sr. and the late Meta Barefoot Dicus.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Sumter Homemakers Club, the Sumter Lamplighters Club and the Turkey Creek Bridge Club. She was retired from Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include three daughters, Celeste Dinkins and her husband, Steve; Amelia Gordon, all of Sumter; and Debbie Griffin and her husband, Wayne, of Wilson, N.C.; a sister, Salinda Monroe and her husband, Leon, of Clemmons, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Wilma Dicus of Tabor City, N.C.; five grandchildren, Lori Dinkins, Stephen Dinkins and his wife, Sarah, Scott Dinkins, David Griffin and Elizabeth Griffin; two great-grandchildren, Rainey Perrou Dinkins and Asa Stephen Dinkins; a number of beloved nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Sylvia Amerson.

She was preceded in death by a son, William Winship "Windy" Gordon.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today in the First Baptist Church with Dr. David Dinkins and the Rev. Ryan Pack officiating.

Burial will be in the Dinkins Mill Family cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Stephen Dinkins, David Griffin, Scott Dinkins, Mitch Monroe, Brent Monroe, Nathan Faulkner, Jake Mattocks and Jim Mattocks.

The family will receive friends at the home.

BRAGMAN W. WILEY

BISHOPVILLE -- Bragman Willie Wiley, 79, of 710 Cedar Lane, Bishopville, passed into eternal rest Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, after a prolonged and courageous battle with various illnesses. The failures in his body that claimed his life never conquered his valiant spirit. He was a World War II veteran, brick mason, motorcycle rider and traveler.

Mr. Wiley was born Nov. 25, 1925, to Mary Anderson Wiley and Willie Graves Wiley. Bragman was the second child of six and was predeceased by his sister, Mildred Wiley Little. Other siblings include Isaac Wiley, Grace Wiley Peterson, Sylivia Wiley (Albert) Golden and Patricia Wiley (Boyd) King.

Mr. Wiley is survived by his wife, Bertha English Wiley of Bishopville; daughter, Bernetta Wilmore of Bishopville and her husband, Willie B. Wilmore, of Camden; son, Wardell Wiley and his wife, Lisa, of Port Washington, N.Y.; son, Brennon Wiley and his wife, Diane, of Bishopville; son, Brian Wiley of Bishopville; daughter, Angela Maine and her husband, Richard Maine, of Avon, Conn.; son, Virgil Wiley and his wife, Courtney, of Harvest, Ala.; and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at noon today at Bishopville Church of Christ, 800 Main St., Bishopville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bishopville Church of Christ Memorial Fund or the Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia.

Boatwright Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

WILLIAM D. BARRY

William "Bill" D. Barry, husband of the late Nancy Eldredge Barry, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at Covenant Place.

Mr. Barry was born on April 22, 1929, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son of the late Joseph Leo and Elaine Barry. He was a retired colonel with the U.S. Air Force with 28 years of service. He was of the Catholic faith.

Survivors include three sons, Douglas Barry of Florence, Richard Barry of Columbia, and David Barry of Wedgefield; four daughters, Barbara McCarthy of Paxville, Susan Ballance of Grapevine, Texas, Anne Cote of Myrtle Beach, and Julie Runge of Columbia; 12 grandchildren, Joshua McCarthy, John, Jennifer, Todd and Greg Ballance, Laura and Steven Barry, Ragan and Ryan Cote, Joseph, Kelly and Mary Alice Runge.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. Daniel J. Carboy, CSsR officiating.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Bullock Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tri-County Hospice, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, SC 29150 or the charity of one's choice.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home for the arrangements.

SARAH DIXON

Sarah Angeline Cooper Dixon died on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, in Lynchburg.

Born Oct. 7, 1929, in Sumter County, she was the third child of the late Eddie and Sarah Wheeler Cooper. Baptized at an early age in the Goodwill Presbyterian Church, Sarah moved to Paterson, N.J., and joined the St. Augustine Presbyterian Church family, where she was an ordained deacon for 25 years. While in New Jersey, she was united in holy matrimony to Albert Dixon. In 1998, she relocated to Lynchburg and moved her membership to Goodwill, where she resumed her services as deacon, a Presbyterian Woman, and attended the adult Sunday school and the seniors weekly Bible study.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Gertrude Boulware.

Survivors are two daughters, Janet M. Cooper of Riverdale, Ga., and Sandra L. Dixon of Paterson; one stepdaughter, Lavern Dudley of Paterson; five grandchildren, Corey Cooper of Paterson, Tameka Brown of Riverdale, Jervne Vann of Memphis, Tenn., Courtney and Corey Dixon of the homestead; four brothers, Curtis (Althea) Cooper of Gable, James Cooper of Paterson, Clifton (Beulah) Cooper of Washington, D.C., and Russell Cooper of Gable; five sisters, Lula (Lawrence) Vaughn of Sumter, Gladys L. Cooper of the homestead, Susie C. Jiggetts of Gable, Shirley (Theodore) Wimberly of Gaithersburg, Md., Edith (Lloyd) Gould of Jonesboro, Ga.; and one aunt, Altomese Cooper of Gable.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Goodwill Presbyterian Church, Mayesville, with the Rev. Richard Baxter, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Carnell Hampton.

The remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. for viewing until the hour of service.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The funeral procession will leave at 10 a.m. from the residence of her sister, Gladys Cooper, 8180 Mac Road, Lynchburg.

The family will also receive friends at 8180 Mac Road, Lynchburg.

Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.
