DONALD H. BLAGG

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Donald Harrison Blagg, 56, beloved husband of 29 years to Carol Jean Frank Blagg, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, in Jacksonville.

Mr. Blagg was born in Bristol, Va., the son of Samuel Blagg and the late Katherine Sneed Blagg. He attended Deer Meadows Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Melissa Kay Blagg of O'Fallon, Mo., and Stacey Elizabeth Blagg of Jacksonville; and one sister, Patricia McGowan of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. today at Bullock Funeral Home.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home for the arrangements.

JANIE M. HART

Janie M. Hart, 65, wife of David Hart, died Feb. 8, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 12, 1939, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Willie J. and Janie L. James McCoy.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 325 Reames Road, Sumter.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

DEBBIE D. HAIR

Debbie Dawson Hair, widow of Thomas Gene Hair, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at her home.

Services will be announced by Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter.

WALTER McMILLAN Sr.

Walter McMillan Sr., 83, husband of Annie Mae Mack McMillan for 60 years, died Feb. 6, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born June 10, 1921, in Sumter, he was a son of the late McKinley McMillan and Bertha Archie McMillan. Mr. McMillan accepted Christ at an early age and was a lifelong member of Mechanicsville United Methodist Church, where he was an active member until his health began to decline. He loved his church and was very active by serving in many capacities: chairperson of administrative council, church school superintendent, trustee board, finance committee, United Methodist Men, membership committee and archives and history committee. He was known as the "handy many" for Mechanicsville. Mr. McMillan was a hard worker, supporting his family by working at Hurst Funeral Home, Kirby's Appliance and the City of Sumter, before becoming a self-employed appliance repairman until his retirement.

Survivors include one son, Walter McMillan Jr. of Tampa, Fla.; one daughter, Ruth (Delano) Rankin of Charlotte; one brother, Hampton P. McMillan of Sumter; one sister, Thelma L. Phillips of Newark, N.J.; one grandson, Delano (Matika) Rankin Jr. of Charlotte; two nieces, George Mae Barnhardt of Jacksonville, Fla., and Sheila Bell of Newark; special cousins, Hampton (Maggie) McMillan of Sumter, James (Estelle) McMillan and Jean Carter of Woodrow.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Mechanicsville United Methodist Church, Ashwood community, Bishopville, with the Rev. Herbert Fogle, pastor, eulogist.

The remains will be placed in the church at noon.

Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Mechanicsville United Methodist Men.

Floral bearers will be Mechanicsville United Methodist Women.

The procession will leave at 12:25 p.m. from his home, 510 Dicks St., Sumter.

The family will receive friends at his home, 510 Dicks St., Sumter.

ROSE H. JONES

Rose Herrington Jones, 71, widow of John R. Jones, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Services will be announced by Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St., Sumter.

SARAH G. McCONICO

Sarah Daisy Green McConico, daughter of the late March Green and Delia Robinson Green Boyd, was born Oct. 8, 1913, in Clarendon County. Her earthly life ended Feb. 5, 2005, at Mariner Health of Sumter East.

She attended Spring Grove School of Clarendon County and, at an early age, accepted Christ. Sarah was joined in holy matrimony to Moses McConico and this union was blessed with two children and a nephew she raised as her own.

She was preceded in death by two children, Lorina McConico and Eligah "Mickey" Williams; five brothers, Dennis, James, Abbie, Dickie and Willie Green; and three sisters, Mae Bell Powell, Virgina Ragin and Sarah "Gallie" Williams.

Precious memories will be cherished by her son, Boyd McConico of Sumter; a special niece and caregiver, Rosa Lee (Douglas) Harriott of Sumter; six grandchildren, Anthony (Shalon) McConico, Christopher (Kinisha) McConico, Bryant Addison, Hope Addison and Elijah (Rickie) Williams, all of Sumter, and Elijah Stein Williams of Neustdat, Germany; seven great-grandchildren, Quenton Temony (one she called her own), Antonio McConico, Travis McConico, Shalandria McConico, Shukeen McConico, Nukeem McConico and D'andre McConico, all of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Peter AME Church in Rimini with the Rev. Larry Davis, Elder Barrington Pierson and the Rev. William Prince.

The remains will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. for viewing.

The family is receiving friends at the home of her niece, Rosa Lee (Douglas) Harriott, 530 N. Wise Drive, Sumter.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

MARY GRANT

BISHOPVILLE -- Mary Lillies Williams Riley Grant, the daughter of the late Ferry Williams and Mary Williams Morgan, was born Nov. 14, 1938, in Bishopville. She departed this earthly life on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at her home.

Mary, a native of Bishopville, graduated from Dennis High School, ranking first in her class. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from South Carolina State College in Orangeburg. After migrating to New York, she completed her master's degree at City College.

Ms. Grant began her career as an educator in Brooklyn, N.Y. After a three-year stint, she transferred to Junior High School 231 in Queens, N.Y., where she taught keyboarding for 13 years. In addition, she was an adjunct professor at Kingsborough Community College.

In the fall of 1995, after living in New York for more than 33 years, Mary Lillies returned to her hometown, where she immediately became a strong influence and inspiration to all that she came in contact with, especially the youth. She set up a project that enabled 1, 200 award-winning multicultural books, valued at $15, 000, to be donated to the schools in Lee County. She exhibited her extensive African art collection at the Opera House and provided gallery talks and tours for the school children and the community during Black History Month in 1996. Shortly thereafter, Mary became the first African American to chair the Lee County Arts Council.

Ms. Grant is best known for organizing the grassroots organization, We CARE (Children are Reason Enough) Advocacy Group in March 1997. CARE quickly became the lifeline of the Lee County Consolidated High School Bond Referendum throughout the county and Lee Central High School is the finished product of these efforts. She coordinated the first after-school program, Reaching Adolescents for Progress and Strength (RAPS), at Bishopville Middle School and spearheaded the movement to restore the original name of Dennis to Bishopville Intermediate School.

Additionally, upon Mary's return to Bishopville, she briefly joined Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter. At the remembrance of her ancestors and her "Sankofa" mission, she returned to her church of origin, Mount Hermon Missionary Baptist. Once in place, she became a leading force in organizing, initiating and expanding various ministries within Mount Hermon. Ms. Grant served as church administrator and director of Capital Stewardship Campaign. She organized the youth and adult drama ministry and the Mount Hermon Community Development Corp. The Mount Hermon Community Development Corp. served as a catalyst for the Teen After-School Center (TASC) in partnership with the Department of Juvenile Justice and South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus. TASC became the model program for 35 programs within the state.

Ms. Grant was a member of many organizations and served in several capacities, which include being a life member of National Council of Negro Women Inc. -- Lee County section; golden life member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Sumter Alumnae Chapter; National Association of Female Executives, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); and the Mount Hermon Missionary Baptist Church. Her passion was collecting African and African American artifacts. She did extensive traveling throughout the world, including tours of five of the seven continents. In recognition of her many accomplishments, Mary was the recipient of numerous public and community awards.

Left to cherish her precious memories are: a son, Anthony (Sylvia) Riley of Long Island, N.Y.; two daughters, Valerie Riley of Charlotte, and Gabrielle Babette Riley of Queens, N.Y.; two granddaughters, Nicole and Ayanna Riley of Long Island; one great-granddaughter, Tylah Mary Riley of Long Island; one sister, Cora Williams Harry of Bamberg; a brother, Tommy (Dorothy) Williams of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a special cousin, Liza Lee White; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Omega Omega Service will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. today, followed by a wake service from 7 to 8 p.m. at Mount Hermon Missionary Baptist Church, 302 Woodward St., Bishopville.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mount Hermon Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Rodney B. James, pastor, officiating.

The body will lie in state beginning at noon.

Burial will be in Sandy Bluff cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 214 Woodward St., Bishopville.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to WE CARE, c/o Mount Hermon Missionary Baptist Church, 302 Woodward St., Bishopville, SC 29010.

JACKIE SULLIVAN Sr.

Funeral services for Mr. Jackie Laverne Sullivan Sr., 75, of Sumter, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Chapel of Greenlawn Funeral Home. Interment, with military honors, will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Dorn Veterans Medical Center, Garners Ferry Road, Columbia, SC 29209.

Mr. Sullivan died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at the Dorn Veterans Medical Center. Born on Jan. 30, 1930, in Manning, he was a son of the late Lucius Samuel Sullivan and Julia Way Sullivan. He had been a resident of Sumter for the past 49 years. He was retired from DuPont as a machinist, with 35 years of service. Mr. Sullivan was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Germany during the Korean War. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Martha Reardon Sullivan of Sumter; a daughter and son-in-law, Debra and John Kennedy of Gaston; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jackie "Jack" L. Sullivan Jr. and Cathy of San Antonio and John Samuel Sullivan of Zephyrhills, Fla.; two sisters, Maxine Sullivan of Columbia and Clara Mae Epps of Manning; and four grandchildren, Nathan, Meghan, Nicole and John John.

Greenlawn Funeral Home of Columbia is in charge of arrangements.

JOHN S. SINGLETON

John Sanders Singleton died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.

Born in Sumter County, on Jan. 1, 1937, he was the fourth of 14 children born to the late Sanders and Delia Bracey Singleton. He was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was employed as a forklift operator in New York City. After returning to Sumter, he became a self-employed carpenter in the construction industry.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Wade and Maceo Singleton, and a sister, Hattie Jackson.

Survivors are three daughters, Patricia Singleton (Clifford) Parr of Florence, Cynthia Denise Singleton of Lenexa, Kan., and Joan Laverne McCray of Petersburg, Va.; two grandchildren, Clifford Hamilton and Christopher Harris Parr; six brothers, Thomas (Lee) Singleton of Greenbelt, Md., William (Willie Mae) Singleton and Benjamin Singleton, both of Sumter, James Albert of Greenville, Louis Singleton of Hartsville and Gaynard (Delilah) Singleton of Sumter; four sisters, Carrie Mae Prioleau of Sumter, Darcus Stewart of Woodbridge, Va., Sarah (Henry) Griggs of Columbus, Ga., and Rhetta (Sammie) Sanders of Newark, Del.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Mount Zion United Methodist Church, 130 Loring Mill Road, with the Rev. Nathaniel Evans Jr., pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Telly Gadson and the Rev. J. Jeanette Cooper-Dicks.

The funeral procession will leave at 3 p.m. from the residence of his daughter, Laverne McCray, 425 McCleary Lane, Sumter.

The family will receive friends at 425 McCleary Lane.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

LEON NATHANIEL

Leon Nathaniel, of 770 Isadore Nathaniel Drive, son of Marthena Heyward Nathaniel and the late Charles Nathaniel, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 8, 2005, at his residence.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete but will be announced later by James Funeral Home Inc.

The family will receive friends at the home.

AGNES BRUNSON

Agnes Irene McKeiver Brunson, 83, wife of David Brunson, died Feb. 5, 2005, at Heartland of Hanahan.

Born Dec. 23, 1921, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Lucille Johnson McKeiver. Mrs. Brunson, affectionately called "Irene, " "Mama" and "Grandmamma, " was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. In the year of 2003, she united with Bethel AME Church, where she praised faithfully. In her early years, she operated Glasscock Launder Mat and was later employed by Grace Baptist Church as a cook.

Survivors besides her husband include two daughters, Deloris Brunson Black of Columbia and Darlene Brunson (Arvel) Hagans of Sumter; two sons, David A. Brunson Jr. of Goose Creek and Tyrone Brunson of Sumter; a granddaughter reared in the home, Monique Harrington (Reggie) Primus of Sumter; a special grandson, David Brunson III of Goose Creek; 23 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mary Willingham and Lucyann Theresa Cocklin, both of Sumter, Irmacine Hill and Delores Hines, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; one brother, William McKeiver of Philadelphia; one daughter-in-law, Audrey Brunson of Sumter; one son-in-law, Henry Lee Harrington; a goddaughter, Debra Grant; two special friends, Mary Allen and Carolyn Dupont; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Evelyn McKeiver William; two grandchildren, Baby Black and Baby McKeiver; one brother, Abraham McKeiver; two sisters, Ruth McKeiver and Lucille Bently.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Beulah AME Church with the Rev. Davie Brown, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Robert E. Galloway and Barbara Lash. Burial will be in Walker cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday.

The family is receiving friends at the home of her daughter, Darlene Hagans, 36 Chandler St., Sumter, and the home of her sister, Mary Willingham, 618 W. Oakland Ave., Sumter.
