EMORY PATTERSON

Emory "Clay" Patterson, 59, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.

Services will be announced by the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St., Sumter.

WILLIAM J. TURBEVILLE Jr.

AUSTIN, Texas -- William J. "Jack" Turbeville Jr., age 89, of Austin, loving son of Jasper and Lucille Turbeville, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005.

Mr. Turbeville began his distinguished career in the field of international trade and the fertilizer industry in 1936 when he joined American Agriculture Chemical Co. (Agrico) as a trainee salesman. By 1963, when Agrico was acquired by the Continental Oil Co. (Conoco), Mr. Turbeville had advanced to become Agrico's president and chairman of the board. From 1963, Mr. Turbeville was vice president and general manager, Plant Foods of Conoco as well as president and chairman of Agrico. In 1966, he was also appointed as chairman of Amalgamated Chemicals, an Australian conglomerate of 42 separate companies owned by Conoco.

In 1972, when Agrico was acquired by the Williams Co., he served for a brief period as vice chairman of the Williams Board, and later that same year was appointed as chairman and CEO of the board of the Phosphate Rock Export Association, the marketing organization representing virtually all the major companies in the U.S. phosphate industry. He served in that position with distinction until 1984.

In addition to other industry activity, Mr. Turbeville has served as chairman of the board of the Fertilizer Institute, president of the International Super Phosphate Association headquartered in Paris -- the only American elected to that position, and vice chairman of the Fertilizer Advisory Committee of the Food and Agriculture Organization headquartered in Rome.

Mr. Turbeville is past chairman of the Tampa Committee of 100, past trustee of the Florida Council of 100, and was honored as the Florida International Business Person of the Year in 1979, and Tampa Maritime Man of the Year 1982-83. He was an overseer of Old Sturbridge Village.

Mr. Turbeville has served on the board of directors of various corporations including TECO Energy Co., First National Bank of Lakeland, Second National Bank of Tampa, First Florida Bank of Tampa, and ConAgra Fertilizer Company of Knoxville, Tenn.

Mr. Turbeville is a native of Turbeville, South Carolina, degreed graduate of Kentucky Wesleyan College, later receiving a Ph.D. During World War II, he served in the European Theatre and rose from private to major in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Turbeville was a 60 year member of Masonic Lodge, Highland Lodge No. 38, Hillsboro, Ohio, and a member of Palma Ceia United Methodist Church in Tampa, Fla.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Ruth; and sons, Dan and Larry; grandson, Raskal Jack; two sisters, Rebecca and Polly; and one brother, Bill.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Pinegrove cemetery in Turbeville.

ARTHUR F. BRUNSON

Arthur Felder Brunson, 78, husband of Catherine Parish Brunson, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at a local nursing center.

Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late David Murray Brunson and the late Lucille Barwick Brunson. Mr. Brunson was of the Methodist faith and a former member of Lewis Chapel United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Army Infantry veteran, serving during World War II, and was a recipient of the Bronze Star. He was employed by Williams Furniture Co. and Jones Chevrolet.

Surviving are his wife of Sumter; three sons, Glen Arthur Brunson, Rudolph Felder Brunson, Michael D. Brunson and wife, Leslie, all of Sumter; two daughters, Esther E. Brunson of Cheraw and Ginger K. Brunson of Sumter; a sister, Louise B. Justice of Manning; two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Stephen Brunson; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys V. Mazza; and two brothers, Roy E. Brunson and David Murray Brunson Jr.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 1595 N. Main St.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Brunson cemetery.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St., Sumter, is in charge of the arrangements.

JANIE V. WESTON

Janie Vaughan Weston, 87, widow of the Rev. Benjamin F. Weston, died Feb. 8, 2005, at her residence.

Born Dec. 6, 1917, in Rembert, she was a daughter of the late Israel and Amelia Taylor Vaughan.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 908 S. Main St., Sumter, SC 29150.

Services will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

LEON NATHANIEL

Leon Nathaniel, son of the late Charles Nathaniel Sr. and Marthena Heyward Nathaniel, was born on Sept. 12, 1954, in Sumter. He departed this life on Feb. 8, 2005, at his residence.

He received his education in the public schools of Sumter, and Baltimore. He joined Orangehill RMUE Church at an early age before moving to Baltimore. He joined Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Baltimore where he was a member of the Sunday school and became an ordained deacon. He later joined Ebeneza Baptist Church in Baltimore.

He was employed by the Davidson Chemical Company in Baltimore.

He returned to South Carolina and was reinstated at Orangehill RMUE. He taught the young adult class at one time. He was a member of the male chorus until his health prevented him from serving.

He leaves to mourn a daughter, Juanita Nathaniel; a son, Darnell Nathaniel of Baltimore; a devoted mother, evangelist Marthena Nathaniel; a devoted aunt, Elizath Mitchell of Sumter; two sisters; two brothers; and other relatives and friends.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, at the Orangehill RMUE Church in Wedgefield with the Rev. Thomas Junious officiating. Burial will follow in the Orangehill cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home, 770 Isadore Nathaniel Dr., Sumter.

AGNES BRUNSON

Agnes Irene McKeiver Brunson, 83, wife of David Brunson, died Feb. 5, 2005, at Heartland of Hanahan.

Born Dec. 23, 1921, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Lucille Johnson McKeiver. Mrs. Brunson, affectionately called "Irene, " "Mama" and "Grandmamma, " was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. In 2003, she united with Bethel AME Church, where she praised faithfully. In her early years, she operated Glasscock Launder Mat and was later employed by Grace Baptist Church as a cook.

Survivors besides her husband include two daughters, Deloris Brunson Black of Columbia and Darlene Brunson (Arvel) Hagans of Sumter; two sons, David A. Brunson Jr. of Goose Creek and Tyrone Brunson of Sumter; a granddaughter reared in the home, Monique Harrington (Reggie) Primus of Sumter; a special grandson, David Brunson III of Goose Creek; 23 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mary Willingham and Lucyann Theresa Cocklin, both of Sumter, Irmacine Hill and Delores Hines, both of Philadelphia; one brother, William McKeiver of Philadelphia; one daughter-in-law, Audrey Brunson of Sumter; one son-in-law, Henry Lee Harrington; a goddaughter, Debra Grant; two special friends, Mary Allen and Carolyn Dupont; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Evelyn McKeiver William; two grandchildren, Baby Black and Baby McKeiver; one brother, Abraham McKeiver; and two sisters, Ruth McKeiver and Lucille Bently.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Bethel AME Church with the Rev. Davie Brown, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Robert E. Galloway and Barbara Lash. Burial will be in Walker cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. today.

The family is receiving friends at the home of her daughter, Darlene Hagans, 36 Chandler St., Sumter, and the home of her sister, Mary Willingham, 618 W. Oakland Ave., Sumter.

Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

DOROTHY L. SMITH

Dorothy L. Smith went to be with the Lord and be an angel Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, while visiting with family in Largo, Fla.

Born June 16, 1924, in Bridgeport, Conn., and raised in the beautiful town of Fairfield, Conn., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Parker. She received her formal education in the public schools of Fairfield County and graduated from Roger Loudlow High School in Fairfield, Conn. At a very early age, she sought a need for a personal Saviour that was her Lord and Creator Jesus Christ. She was a very loving, caring and giving person.

Survivors are her husband of 56 years, Al Smith; two sons, Greg A. Smith and Kevin J. Smith and his wife, Rita, all of Sumter; one daughter, Elaine DeMarte and her husband, Martin, of Twinsburg, Ohio; two brothers, John Parker of Fairfield, Conn., and George Parker of Morristown, Conn.; two sisters, Mildred Peretti of Stratford, Conn., and Jannette Galya of Fairfield, Conn.; and four grandchildren, Sarah DeMarte, Lauren DeMarte, Christopher J. Smith and Nicole E. Smith.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Kownacki.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with the Rev. John Hall officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Smith, 3380 Butterworth Circle, Austin Acres, Sumter.

FREDERICK BRADFORD

Frederick "Boy" Bradford, 81, widower of Dorothy Mae Gadson Bradford, died Feb. 7, 2005, at Mariner Healthcare of Sumter East.

Born Sept. 23, 1923, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Sam Nicholas and Elizabeth Campbell Bradford.

Survivors include three sons, four brothers, two sisters, a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by one son, Frederick Bradford Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First New Hope Baptist Church, 1818 3rd St., Washington, D.C., with the Rev. McCoy Hayes officiating.

The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Monday.

JAMES H. LOGAN

James Howard "Howie Howe" Logan, 40, died Feb. 6, 2005, at Palmetto Health Richland.

Born Dec. 7, 1964, in Sumter, he was a son of Catherine Montgomery Logan and the late Heyward Logan Jr. James attended the public schools of Sumter County and was a 1983 graduate of Sumter High School. At an early age, he became a member of Salem Missionary Baptist Church. He was employed by Sumter Transport.

Survivors besides his mother include two sisters, Tonya D. Mack of Dalzell and Shanita Harris of Reading, Pa.; one brother, Ricky Logan of Reading; paternal grandparents, Heyward Sr. and Mary Logan; 12 aunts; nine uncles; a special niece, Raven Mack, and loving nephew, Rayshon Mack, both of Dalzell; a number of other nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Albert and Thelma Montgomery.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Salem Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. N.L. Newsome, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be Walker cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 6 H St., Sumter.

JAMES M. CARTER

MANNING -- James Melvin "Mellie Mel" Carter, 50, husband of Manzie Ridgill Carter, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at his residence, 5193 Moses Dingle Road, Davis Station.

Born March 21, 1954, in Manning, he was a son of Alreda Cain Carter and the late George Carter Sr. He was a 1973 graduate of Scott's Branch High School, Summerton. He was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, where he served faithfully. He was the founder of M and M Production Entertainment as a disc jockey. He was also operator of Davis Station Quick Stop.

Survivors besides his wife of Anderson and mother of Davis Station include his companion, Teresa Cage of the home; three sons, Michael (Falecia) Miller of Manning, Michael Bowman of Summerton and Rickey Wilkerson of Charlotte; two daughters, Adrianne Carter of Davis Station and Deidra Johnson of Newark, N.J.; four brothers, Ronnie Carter of Manning, Robert Carter of Philadelphia, Gary (Vanessa) Carter of Wilmington, Del., and George Carter Jr. of Alexandria, Va.; one sister, Brenda (Greg) Council of Wilmington, Del.; and seven grandchildren.

The remains will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Jordan community of Manning, with the Rev. Antonio Lee, pastor, assisting the Rev. Dr. Leon Winn, the Rev. Jerry Dingle and the Rev. O'Donald Dingle.

Burial will be in Antioch Memorial Garden.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 5193 Moses Dingle Road, Davis Station.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.
