LONNIE B. GROSS

Graveside services for Lonnie Burt Gross, 86, widower of Wilma Joyce Gross, formerly of Columbia, will be held 3 p.m. Sunday in Greenlawn Memorial Park with full military rites and interment to follow.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be sent to Covenant Place, 2825 Carter Road, Sumter, SC 29150, and/or to a charity of one's choice.

Greenlawn Funeral Home of Columbia is in charge.

Mr. Gross died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at Covenant Place in Sumter. Born on May 31, 1918, in Memphis, Tenn., he was the son of the late Harry and Nettie Gross. There were no other siblings. He joined the U.S. Army at the young age of 17, where he was a member of the U.S. Calvary and was first sergeant in his company. Mr. Gross fought under Gen. Patton in World War II with the 3rd Army Division. He was also a Korean War veteran. He was promoted to sergeant major of the Provost Marshall's Office at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas, in 1959. In 1961, he was assigned to Fort Jackson, Columbia, where he was command sergeant major of the Provost Marshall's Office, until his retirement in 1967, having served more than 30 years in the U.S. Army.

During South Carolina Gov. Robert McNair's term in office, he was the supervisor in charge of security of the Governor's Mansion. Later, he worked for the Public Safety Department for the S.C. Department of Youth Services as captain.

Mr. Gross enjoyed hunting, fishing, photography, golfing and camping with his wife, Joy. He was raised and baptized a Presbyterian, but later attended Baptist churches. While a resident at Covenant Place for the past two years, he was always willing to help others and had a wonderful sense of humor.

Surviving are one son, Lonnie Burt Gross II and his wife, Jerrie Gross, of Columbia; two daughters, Margaret Jean Mills and her husband, Woody Mills, of Sumter and Sue Ann Dacus and her husband, Dr. John V. Dacus, of Greenville; six grandchildren, Sheri Mills Martin, Sandra Mills Dixon, Lonnie Burt "Tripp" Gross, Michael Gross, Mark W. Dacus and Brian S. Dacus; three step-grandchildren, Stephen Johnson, Jennifer Porter and Mandy Johnson; six great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

KATAYSHA MICKENS

DALZELL -- Baby Girl Kataysha Mickens, 4 months, died Feb. 10, 2005, at the Medical University of South Carolina hospital, Charleston.

Born Oct. 16, 2004, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of David Fate and Celeste Mickens.

The family will receive friends at the home of Celeste Mickens, 2148 Spring Hill Road, Dalzell.

Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

WILLIAM L. DOZIER

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- William Levi Dozier, 74, widower of Patricia Johnson Dozier, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at Woodhull Hospital, Brooklyn.

Born Oct. 1, 1930, in Manning, he was a son of the late Rev. Timothy Dozier and Agnes Thomas Dozier. He attended Manning Training School and was a member of William Chapel Christian Church, where he joined in his youth and accepted Christ as his personal Savior.

Survivors include nine brothers, Charles (Eula Mae) Dozier, Jerome (Julia) Dozier, Matthew (Helen) Dozier, Barney (Mary Alma) Dozier, Marcus Dozier, Timothy Dozier Jr., Ruben (Ella) Dozier, Milton Dozier and Jackson Dozier Jr.; three sisters, Bertha Dozier Keels, Ann Dozier and Janet Dozier.

He was preceded in death by one son.

The remains will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Funeral services will be held at noon Sunday at William Chapel Christian Church, Greeleyville U.S. 521, Manning, with the Rev. Emanuel Evans, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of his brother, Jerome Dozier, 1292 Forest Trail, Manning.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

EARNEST McFADDEN Sr.

Earnest McFadden Sr., beloved husband of the late Earlene W. McFadden for 48 years, died Feb. 9, 2005.

He was the father of Kelly, Elease, Ernest Jr., Lizzie Mae, Orel. He is also survived by one brother, Raleigh McFadden; two sisters, Almetta Johnson and Meleathia McFadden; and a host of grand, great-grand, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family and many friends.

He will lie in state at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday until time of service of 2 p.m., at Oak Grove AME Church, 271 N. Burnt Road, Olanta. Interment will be in New McFadden cemetery.

Douglas W. Collins, 53, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

Services will be announced by Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St., Sumter, SC 29150.

CARL L. STONE

MANNING -- Carl Lavern Stone, 41, husband of Shirlene Messer Stone, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born July 15, 1963, in Hemingway, he was a son of Nora Tilton Stone and the late Carlisle Stone. He was a carpenter and was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.

Surviving besides his mother of Manning and his wife of Manning are two sons, Christopher Stone and Ethan Stone of Manning; a daughter, Ashley Stone of Manning; four brothers, Ervin Stone and Paron Beeco of New Port Richey, Fla., Linwood Stone of Columbia and David Stone of Manning; three sisters, Linda Corbett of Manning, Barbara McKeithan of Charleston and Pansy Oxendine of Aiken; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Sam Neal officiating. Burial will follow in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home, and at other times at the residence, 300 Paul Moody Drive.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

CHARLES L. CROFT Jr.

Charles L. Croft Jr., 71, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at a local nursing center.

Services will be announced by Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter.

MARIAN T. SMITH

BISHOPVILLE -- Marian T. Smith, wife of Luther S. Smith, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Bishopville, she was a daughter of Oleta Bell Troublefield Sansbury and the late Emmett Troublefield.

She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church at Rembert and was formerly employed by Winn-Dixie.

Survivors besides her husband, mother and step-father, Thomas Sansbury, include three sons, Luther E. Smith and his wife, Rhonda, Darrell A. Smith, and Tony L. Smith and his wife, Natalie, all of Bishopville; a daughter, Sylvia S. Floyd of Lynchburg; two sisters, Carolyn Hatfield and her husband, John, of Dalzell, and Arlene Mathis and her husband, Richard, of Bishopville; two brothers, Charles Troublefield and his wife, Harriett, of Rembert, and Bobby Troublefield of Dalzell; 10 grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Cornelius Troublefield.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Pressley Morris officiating.

Burial will be in the Piedmont cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Chuck Troublefield, Brad Troublefield, Darrell Smith, Jason Rooks, Richard Green and Jamie Floyd.

Matthew Smith will serve as honorary pallbearer.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home and other times at 1950 Woodrow Road.

Memorials may be made to the Freewill Baptist Children's Home, P.O. Box 229, Turbeville, SC 29162.

LILLIAN M. McGILL

Mrs. Lillian Moses McGill, of 100 Webb Ave., died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

The family is receiving friends at the home of her son, Mr. David (Virginia) McGill at 2 Riley St.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Community Funeral Home Inc., 353 Manning Ave., Sumter.

RICHARD MILLER

BISHOPVILLE -- Richard Miller Jr., died Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at his home, 414 Cousar St., Bishopville.

He was a son of the late Richard and Essie William Miller.

The family is receiving friends at the home.

Funeral services will be announced by Square Deal Funeral Home, 106 McIntosh St., Bishopville.

DOUGLAS W. COLLINS

Douglas Warren Collins, 53, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

Born in Sumter, he was the son of the late Horace Leonard Collins and Billie Ree Harrison Bailey.

Mr. Collins worked for Cooper Tools for over 27 years and later for Goldkist Company. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are a daughter, Rebecca Morris of Sumter; three brothers, Michael Lee Collins and wife, Nancy, Robert Carlton Collins and wife, Rosa, Allan I. Collins and wife, Carol, all of Sumter; two grandchildren, Katie Marie Morris and Horace Morris IV.

He was preceded in death by a brother, James Clayton Collins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Tony Sanders officiating.

Burial will follow in the Sumter cemetery.

LEON RABY Sr.

Ret. (MSGT) Leon Raby Sr., husband of Mrs. Maxine McDonald Raby, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at his home.

Born in Baton Rouge, La., he was a son of the late Richard and Mary Gauthier Raby.

He was educated in the public schools of Baton Rouge and was a retired veteran of the U.S. Air Force with 26 years of service, where he was an Administration Technician.

He received several honors and recognition namely the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Overseas Long Tour Ribbon, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon, Education Graduate Ribbon, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

He was selected Who's Who among American Colleges and Universities.

He was employed at Tuomey Health Care System for 10 years as Captain of Security.

Survivors include his loving wife of the home; four sons, Leon Raby II of Glendale, Calif., Patrick (Raquel) Raby, Jonathan T. (Tamikia) Raby, all of Sumter, Clarence B. Raby of Fort Richardson, Alaska; one daughter, Theresa Deann Forbes of Glendale, Calif.; three brothers, Richard Raby Jr., John B. Raby and David Raby, all of Baton Rouge, La.; three sisters, Bertha Severan Compton of California, Elizabeth Satansberry of Denver, Colo., and Luetisher Raby of Baton Rouge, La.; 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Leon was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence and Seabal Raby, and two sisters, Olevia Raby and Carean Honore.

A wake service will be held Monday from 6 to 7 p.m. at Community Funeral Home Inc. in Manning.

Services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Revs. Dr. Marion H. Newton, Ricky Simmons, Irene Anthony and Minister Velda Rucker officiating.

The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. for viewing.

The family is receiving friends at the home, 7 Tree Top Court, Sumter.
