ERNEST D. COLLINS

Ernest David Collins, 48, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at his home.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Lynch, 3311 Nazarene Church Road.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium, 515 Miller Road, Sumter, is in charge of arrangements.

DOUGLAS W. COLLINS

Douglas Warren Collins, 53, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia.

Born in Sumter, he was the son of the late Horace Leonard Collins and Billie Rae Harrison Bailey.

Mr. Collins worked for Cooper Tools for more than 27 years and later for Goldkist Co. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving besides his mother are a daughter, Rebecca Morris of Sumter; three brothers, Michael Lee Collins and wife, Nancy, Robert Carlton Collins and wife, Rosa, Allan L. Collins and wife, Carol, all of Sumter; and two grandchildren, Katie Marie Morris and Horace Morris IV.

He was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Collins Jr. and a brother, James Clayton Collins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today in the chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Tony Sanders officiating.

Burial will follow in the Sumter cemetery.

The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home & Crematory, 221 Broad St., Sumter, is in charge of the arrangements.

LEROY PRICE Jr.

Leroy Price Jr., husband of Ossie Mae McClam Price, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Leroy Price Sr. and Ada Ruth Capers Price.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the home, 76 McCormick Drive.

Funeral services will be announced by Scriven Funeral Home, 230 Lafayette Drive, Sumter.

CLARA E. HODGE

ALCOLU -- Clara Evans Hodge, 99, widow of Saul Hodge Sr., died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at Lake Marion Nursing Home in Summerton.

Born Jan. 29, 1906, in the Biggers/Brewington section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Ervin Evans and Carrie Brogdon Evans.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 3413 Alderman Camp Road, in the St. Mark community of Alcolu.

Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

OLIVER J. KOLB

Oliver J. Kolb, 83, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at his home.

Born in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Julius Elpan Kolb and the late Minerva Carolyn Barwick Kolb.

Mr. Kolb was twice married , first to the late Ernestine Revill Kolb, then to the late Louise Kolb. He was a retired electrician with Hill Amusement Company and enjoyed playing and selling piccolos.

Mr. Kolb sold so many piccolos that he won numerous trips to the Bahamas.

He was a Mason serving in Lodge No. 277 of Great Falls and attended First Church of God in Sumter.

Surviving are a son, Allen Kolb of Great Falls; a daughter, Carolyn Ellis of Great Falls; two sisters, Ida Mae K. Belk and Lillie Juanita K. Belk Davis, both of Sumter; five grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.

Mr. Kolb was preceded in death by a son, Oliver Joseph Kolb and a grandchild, John Hubert Belk.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m Tuesday in the chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Bower officiating.

Burial with Masonic Rites will follow in the Greenlawn cemetery in Great Falls.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 2340 Whites Mill Road.

Memorials may be sent to First Church of God Building Fund, 318 N. Wise Drive, Sumter, SC 29150 or a charity of one's choice.

NATHANIEL PEARSON Jr.

NEW YORK -- Nathaniel Pearson Jr., 72, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, in New York.

Born Feb. 22, 1932, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Nathaniel Pearson Sr. and the late Martha Etta McGhaney Pearson.

Mr. Pearson was educated in the public schools of Sumter and prior to his retirement, he was an owner of a taxi and limousine service.

He is survived by one brother, Herman Pearson of Sumter; two sisters, Mable Pearson Goodine Bennett of Manning and Bernedine Faison of Las Vegas.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Hillside Memorial Park in Sumter with the Rev. Daniel McGhaney officiating.

The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Mable Pearson Goodine Bennett, 14 Harvin Ave., Manning.

Fleming-DeLaine Funeral Home in Manning is in charge of funeral arrangements.

HELEN M. GIBBONS

MANNING -- Helen Morris Gibbons died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, in Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.

Born in New Zion, she was a daughter of the late Julius Wilkens and Ila Barrow Morris. She graduated from Salem School in New Zion, was manager of Allied Department Store, sales clerk at Belk and owner and operator of Gibby's Dress Shoppe. She was a former member of Eastern Star, founding member of Virginia Pride's Garden Club, a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, where, prior to her illness, she was secretary of the Homemakers Sunday School Class.

Helen was an avid gardener, cook and dancer. She was also a wonderful mama and grandmama.

She was preceded in death by a son, Chuck; a grandson, Chuckie; and a sister, Veronica Bethany Morris.

Surviving are a daughter, Angela Gibbons of Manning; her special daughter, Patty Bradshaw Wood of Manning; a brother, Ray Morris (Frances) of New Zion; two sisters, Virginia Webster of New Zion and Billie Jean Mathews (William) of Scranton; and three very special grandchildren, Chelsi, Maddi and Colby Gibbons of Shreveport, La. She is also survived by her former husband and friend, Larry Elvin Gibbons, Turbeville, and daughter-in-law, Christi Gibbons Breithaupt of Shreveport, La.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Manning First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Murray Gibbons and the Rev. Dr. Robert L. Alderman officiating. Burial will follow in New Zion United Methodist Church cemetery in New Zion.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 49 W. Boyce St., Manning, SC 29102, New Zion United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 31, New Zion, SC 29111 or to Union Baptist Church, New Zion.

CHARLES L. CROFT Jr.

Charles L. Croft Jr., 71, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at a local nursing center. Born in the Springhill Community of Lee County, he was a son of the late Charles L. Croft Sr. and the late Edith Hatfield Croft.

He retired from Schaefer Distributing Co. and was the owner of Big Charlie's Lawn Care.

Mr. Croft served in the U.S. Army and was a Mason and a Shriner.

Survivors include five children, Terri Simmons and her husband, Julian, of Sumter, Cynthia Croft of Sumter, Charles S. "Buddy" Croft and his wife, Sherrie, of Sumter, Robby N. Croft of Columbia and Gene A. Croft and his wife, Michele, of Sumter; three brothers, David Croft and his wife, Annette, of Sumter, Tim Croft of Alcolu and Mark Croft and his wife, Debbie, of Sumter; two sisters, Barbara Barwick and her husband, James, and Kay Hyatt and her husband, Thomas, all of Sumter; a sister-in-law, Bobbie Croft of Sumter; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Sharon Robinson.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, James R. Croft and Marion Benjamin Croft.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Kirk Baker and the Rev. Jackie Jenkins officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at 533 Georgetown Ave.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, 61 Broadway, New York, NY 10006. Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium, 515 Miller Road, Sumter, is in charge of arrangements.

KATAYSHA A. MICKENS

Little Miss Kataysha Amoni Mickens, 4 months, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Born Oct. 16, 2004, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Celeste Mickens and David Fate.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by two sisters, Alexis and Nyasia Mickens of Dalzell; her grandmothers, Etta Mickens and Sharon Fate; her grandfather, David Boyd; her great-grandmother, Susan Boyd; her great-grandfather, James Mickens; and two uncles, Kevin and Lecedrick Mickens, all of Bishopville.

She was preceded in death by her great-grandmother, Elizabeth "Carrie Lee" Mickens and her great-grandfather, Harmon Boyd.

Funeral services will be held at noon today from the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter, with the Rev. Herbert Fogle, pastor of Mechanicsville United Methodist Church as officiating eulogist.

Burial will be in Mechanicsville United Methodist Churchyard cemetery, Ashwood Community, Sumter.

Pallbearers and floral bearers will be family and friends.

The procession will leave at 11:15 a.m. from the home of her mother, Celeste Mickens, 2148 Spring Hill Road, Dalzell.

Family will receive friends at the home.

Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter, is in charge of arrangements.

SAMUEL JOE Sr.

Samuel Joe Sr., 70, husband of Mrs. Lillie Mae Wilson Joe, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center after an illness.

He was born Sept. 24, 1934, in Lee County, a son of Clara B. Joe and the late Deacon Charlie Joe Sr.

The family is receiving friends at the home, 23 Rast St., Sumter.

Arrangements will be announced later by Sumter Funeral Service Inc., 623 Manning Ave., Sumter.
