CLARA E. HODGE

ALCOLU -- Clara Evans Hodge, 99, widow of Saul Hodge Sr., died Sunday morning, Feb. 13, 2005, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility, Summerton.

Born Jan. 29, 1906, in the Biggers/Brewington section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Ervin Evans and Carrie Brogdon Evans. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. In her youth, she joined Biggers AME and later she moved her membership to St. Mark AME, where she served faithfully as the president of the senior choir, member of the Missionary Society and Stewardess Board. She was a member of Red Hill Order of Eastern Star Lodge No. 157 and the YMCA.

Survivors include three sons, Ervin Hodge of Miami, Fla., the Rev. Saul (Dorothy) Hodge Jr. of Reading, Pa., and Clifton Hodge of South Norwalk, Conn.; six daughters, Lucille Blanding and Earlean Bradley, both of Reading, Ella Mae Preston of Hobe South, Fla., Maxine Hodge and Margie (Charles) Wilson, both of Alcolu, and Deloris (Jenkin) Cooper of Gable; 69 grandchildren; 92 great-grandchildren; and 25 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Edward and Archie Hodge.

Eastern Star Rites will be held at 7 p.m. today at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning.

The remains will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Mark AME Church, Alderman Camp Road, Alcolu, with the Rev. Vaughn, pastor, the Rev. Leroy Green, presiding, the Rev. Saul Hodge Jr., eulogist, assisting the Revs. Northern Miller and Carnell Hampton. Burial will be in the churchyard cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence, 3413 Alderman Camp Road, St. Mark community, Alcolu.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

ROY O. McKNIGHT

Roy Oneal McKnight, the son of Jannie Bradley McKnight and the late Edward McKnight, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

The family will be receiving friends at the home, 1034 Acres Ave., Sumter.

Services are incomplete and will be announced by Community Funeral Home of Sumter.

JACK H. WINGARD

TURBEVILLE -- Jack H. Wingard, age 80, died Feb. 14, 2005, in a Florence hospital, after an illness.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Turbeville Southern Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late George Henry Wingard and Ila Coker Wingard. Mr. Wingard was a Navy veteran of World War II, a retired truck driver and was a charter member of Turbeville Southern Methodist Church, where he served as a past steward, a trustee, and a member of the men's Bible class.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Wingard.

Surviving are his wife, Lila Baird Wingard of Turbeville; a daughter, Patti W. (Randy) Osborne of Turbeville; two sons, R. Keith (Cheryl) Wingard and Randy (Jackie) Wingard, both of Turbeville; two brothers, J.D. Wingard of Turbeville and Loren Wingard of Eastover; seven grandchildren, Jason Osborne, Ron Wingard, Kevin Wingard, Lorrie Coker, Amy Wyatt, Jenny Stephens and Abby Wingard; five great-grandchildren, Spencer Wyatt, Mary Lynsey Wyatt, Savanna Wingard, Lillie Blakelyn Coker and Cody Plummer.

Memorials may be made to Turbeville Southern Methodist Church.

RAYMOND T. KELSEY

Raymond Thomas Kelsey, 68, widower of Mary Brunson Kelsey, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005, at a local nursing center.

Born in Vicksburg, Miss., he was a son of the late George Kelsey and the late Electa Kelsey. He was a member of Northside Memorial Baptist Church and was retired from DuPont.

Survivors include one daughter, Tammy Griffin and her husband, Larry, of Sumter; two grandchildren, Jessica Kelsey and Brandon Caples, both of Sumter; one great-grandchild, Lexi Kelsey; one brother, Darrell Kelsey of Pine Bluff, Alaska; one sister, Lucille Milam of Virginia; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. today in the Sumter cemetery with the Rev. Jimmy Holley officiating.

The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, 30 Folsom St.

Memorials may be made to Northside Memorial Baptist Church, 1004 N. Main St., Sumter, SC 29150.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.

FRANCES HEARD

Frances Heard died Feb. 16, 2005, at NHC Healthcare of Sumter.

Services will be announced by Bullock Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

NAOMI R. ADAMS

SUMMERVILLE -- Naomi Richardson Adams of Rimini died Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at the Summerville Medical Center.

The family is receiving friends at the home in Rimini, off Governor Richardson Road.

Plans will be announced by Community Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

CHARLES L. RAY Sr.

Charles Lawrence Ray Sr., 57, husband of Diane Barnhill Ray, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of Lillie Mae Buckner Ray and the late Lawrence Ray. He was a member of Springbank Baptist Church, a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a Shaw Air Force Base civil service employee for 15 years in the housing maintenance division.

Survivors besides his wife and mother include one son, Charles L. "Chuck" Ray Jr. of the home; one sister, Margaret Robinson of Dalzell; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in the Spring Bank Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ken Ray, Jack Buckner, Greg Ray, Barry Ray, Paul Goff and Steve Walker.

Honorary pallbearers will be the housing maintenance division employees.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home.

ROY O. McKNIGHT

Roy O'Neal McKnight, son of Jannie Lou Bradley McKnight and the late Edward "Ned" McKnight, was born in Sumter on Dec. 1, 1961. He attended Mayewood High School. He was employed by Martin Color-Fi. He was a member of Mulberry Baptist Church and was a 32nd degree master mason of St. James Lodge No. 5 and shriner of Kabah Temple No. 1.

He leaves to cherish his fond memories his loving mother, Jannie Lou McKnight; a son, Rodriquez O'neal McKnight; a daughter, Sanqunette Tache' Lucky; a former wife, Cheryl Vanessa McKnight; two brothers, Edward McKnight and Stoney McKnight, both of Sumter; three sisters, Sara Jane (Herbert) Nelson of Alcolu, Dorothy Lee McKnight and Nadine (Johnny) Williams, both of Sumter.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Mulberry Baptist Church with the Rev. O.S. Scott Sr. officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at 1034 Acres Ave., Sumter.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

EDDIE G. SIPES

Eddie Gaynelle Sipes, born Feb. 29, 1924, died on Feb. 16, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. She was the proud daughter of Edward Daniel and Exa Maurine Greene.

Devoted wife of 57 years to retired U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Richard M. Sipes, beloved mother of Suanne, Daphne and Dolly; grandmother of Tony, Tish, Chase, Jonathan and Stephen; great-grandmother; aunt; cousin; mother-in-law to her wonderful son-in-law, Tony; and she was a friend to many folks and animals.

Known by her childhood friends and Texas buddies as "Tooey, " Gaynelle was quick-witted, an adventuress, storyteller extraordinaire and self-taught artist. Gaynelle and Richard raised their family and entertained other family and friends at their second home, "Oleo Acres, the Cheaper Spread, " at Santee, where they enjoyed fishing, picking plums, and the nature of Lake Marion.

She cherished her Irish heritage, Texas roots and career with the South Pacific railroad.

She is predeceased by one grandchild, Dana Blackmon, and all her siblings, Exa, Daphne, Joanne and Dan.

This yellow rose of Texas with a fabulous sense of humor, whose gifted letter-writing kept her friends and family anxiously awaiting the arrival of the letters, will be deeply missed.

She is also survived by her niece, Tish Fiztsimmons and her husband, Jim, of Glenwood, Iowa; Eddie Hite and his wife, Dina, and their daughter, Kristina, of Corpus Christi, Texas; and Bill Hite and his wife, Mitzi, and their children, Andrea and Aaron, of Highlands Ranch, Colo.

The family requests donations in lieu of flowers be sent to The Tuomey Hospital Foundation, 115 N. Sumter St., Suite 120, Sumter, SC 29150-4983, or to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, P.O. Box 4261, Pittsfield, MA 01202.

The family thanks the wonderful nursing, technical and transport staff of 3 Surgical West at Tuomey for their loving care.

A private graveside service will be held on Friday.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Bullock Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Irmo with the Rev. Chip Watson officiating.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home for the arrangements.

GEORGE W. GREEN Sr.

MANNING -- George Washington Green Sr., 76, companion of Isabella Lesaine of Manning, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Feb. 22, 1928, in the Davis Station community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Tilman Green and Bertha Cain Green Oliver and stepson of the late Sam Oliver. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he joined Laurel Hill AME Church. He later joined Trinity AME, where he remained a member until his death. He worked construction for Hanberry Construction Co. until his illness.

Survivors include his companion, Isabella Lesaine of Manning; one son, George (Lucrecia) Green Jr. of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one daughter, Patricia Ann Green of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one sister, Idella (Tom) Byrd of Olanta; three grandsons, Peter and Damel Green of Brooklyn and Darryl Green of Newport News, Va.; two granddaughters, Shante Wilkerson of Brooklyn and Chrystal Green of Newport News; and 21 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Andrew Hickson; a brother, Lee Earnest Green; and two sisters, Lillie Mae Fredrick and Blanche Billups.

The remains will be placed in the church at noon Friday.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Trinity AME Church, Rigby Street, Manning, with the Rev. Dr. Bennie Colclough, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Eddie Lesaine, Dr. Cokley Richburg, the Rev. Henry McCray and the Rev. Deloris Gerow.

Burial will be in Ivory cemetery in the Davis Station community of Clarendon County.

Pallbearers will be nephews and floral bearers will be nieces.

The family will receive friends at the home of his companion, Isabella Lesaine, at 1101 MS Road, Manning, and also at his niece and her husband, Sandra and James Singletary's home, 708 E. Moore St., Olanta.

SAMUEL JOE Sr.

Samuel Joe Sr., the son of the late Deacon Charlie Joe Sr., who is survived by his mother, Clara B. Joe of Sumter, was born Sept. 24, 1934, in Lee County, and was called to rest on Feb. 13, 2005, in Sumter.

He attended the public schools of Lee County and was a graduate of Dennis High School, Bishopville. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Samuel joined the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church at an early age, where he sang on the junior choir and served on the usher board.

Samuel Joe Sr. is survived by his devoted wife, Lillie M. Joe; four children, Carolyn Rowe of Sumter, Samuel Joe Jr. of Sumter, Marcella G. Maclin of Jacksonville, Fla., and Reggie W. (Veronica) Joe of Sumter; five sisters, Ruth Washington, Rebecca Speed, Geneva (Moses) Hudson, Evelyn Joe and Phyllis Keels of Lake City; three brothers, Jimmy (Norma) Joe, Malachi (Miriam) Joe, the Rev. Charles (Sherri) Joe; five grandchildren; his mother-in-law, Mary Leach of Sumter; brother-in-law, the Rev. H.L. Wilson of Marion; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by three siblings, Ruby Cain, David Lee Samuel and Etoy Joe.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, Mayesville, with the Rev. Eugene Myers, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Charles Joe, the Rev. Joshua Dupree, the Rev. H.L. Wilson, Minister Thomas Cain and Elder Clarence Wilson. Burial will follow in the Mayesville Community cemetery, Mayesville.

The remains will be placed in the church one hour before the service.

The family is receiving friends at the home, 23 Rast St.

The funeral procession will leave the home, 23 Rast St., at 1:15 p.m.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. is in charge of the arrangements.
