ARTHUR JOHNSON Jr.

Arthur "A.J." Johnson Jr., 47, of 8 King St., husband of Bobbie Green Johnson, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, after a brief illness.

Born Sept. 27, 1957, in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Arthur Johnson Sr. and Juanita Slater Johnson. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and graduated in 1975 from Sumter High School. He attended Central Carolina Technical College. He served in the U.S. Army. Hodge Trucking Co. employed Arthur. At an early age, he joined Bethlehem Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of the home; two sons, Derrick Renaldo Johnson (Shekinah) and Devin Rashad Johnson of the home; one daughter, Brittany Kewanda Shavonne Johnson of Rembert; two grandchildren, Javiya Ashinti Denise Johnson and DeShawn Nasir Johnson of Sumter; one brother, Edward Samuel (Henrietta) Johnson of Raleigh, N.C.; two special sisters, Blanche Thomas and Delores Brown-Johnson, both of Sumter; one aunt, Corine Spann Pringle of Sumter; one uncle, George Silas of Sumter; foster parents, Albertha Davis and Mr. and Mrs. James Potts.

Two brothers, Lawrence D. Slater and James W. Houck, and one sister, Rosetta "Tiay" Johnson, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. today in the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 325 W. Fulton St., Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. James Blassingame officiating.

Burial will follow in the Hillside Memorial cemetery.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

CYNTHIA N. BROWN

Dyson's Home for Funerals and Historic Liberty Hill AME Church, Summerton, along with the Rev. Melvin J. Capers, pastor, announce funeral services for the late Cynthia Nixon Brown will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church, Summerton. The Rev. M.J. Capers, pastor, will officiate. Final resting place will be the church cemetery.

Cynthia Nixon Brown, age 48, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born in Washington, D.C., she was a daughter of the late Frank and Mamie Ruth Green Nixon. She was the wife of John Lee "Ka-La" Brown. She was educated in the public schools of Washington, D.C. After moving to Clarendon County, she attended the public schools of Clarendon County, where she graduated from Scott's Branch High School, Class of 1975. She completed courses in early childhood development at Central Carolina Technical College in Sumter. She was employed with Allied Department Store, Manning, and later as a bus driver for the Rural Transportation Authority (RTA) for six years. Mrs. Brown was also a very active parent in the schools of Clarendon District One.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Earlene "Cookie" Nixon, and three brothers, Romey, Michael and Willie Nixon.

She leaves to cherish her memories her husband, John Lee "Ka-La" Brown Sr. of the home; a son, John Brown Jr. of the home; two daughters, Ruth (Darelle) Squirewell of Columbia and Alaina Brown of the home; two sisters, Helen (Alphonso) Smith of Summerton and Barlinda Nixon of Spartanburg; three grandchildren; and a host of other close relatives and friends.

Pallbearers and floral bearers will be members of the Class of 1975, Scott's Branch High School.

The family will receive friends at the home, 1142 Barberry St., Lazy Acres Subdivision, Summerton.

Arrangements are entrusted to Dyson's Home for Funerals of Summerton.

EARLEAN W. LESANE

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Earlean Watson Lesane died Feb. 20, 2005, at Sinai Hospital, Baltimore.

Born in Horry County, she was a daughter of the late Deacon Everett Watson and Deaconess Rosetta Floyd Watson. She was the sister of Mildred Watson Bowman of Sumter.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. today at Transformation Church of Jesus Christ, 5150 Baltimore National Pike, Baltimore, with the Rev. Dr. Monroe Sanders Jr., pastor.

DORENE H. KING

BISHOPVILLE -- Dorene Hodge King, 88, widow of Thomas Joseph King Sr., died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at a local nursing center.

Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Cantey Labon Hodge and the late Alice Bessie Bartlette Hodge. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bishopville, a member of the Happy Timers Group and the Faith Sunday School class. She was a former member of the Iris Garden Club, and was a retired cosmetologist.

Survivors include a son, Joey King of Sumter; daughters, Debbie Coesens and her husband, Ken, of Spartanburg, Nancy Jackson and her husband, Dale, of Newmarket, N.H., and Shirley Leaphart and her husband, Tom, of Mt. Pleasant; two sisters, Jean Terry and her husband, J.C., of Sanford, N.C., and Betty Hodge of Birmingham, Ala.; a brother, C.L. Hodge of Ashwood; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Thelma Kirven.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dale Warren officiating.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday in the church fellowship hall.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Bishopville, 229 W. Church St., Bishopville, SC 29010.

MAE T. EDWARDS

Mae Thelma Edwards, 71, wife of Franklin Roosevelt Edwards Sr., died Feb. 18, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 8, 1933, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Albert Wilson and Mary Benbow Wilson. She attended Mayesville Institute, Mayesville. She confessed Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and joined Galilee Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Jimmy Lee (Martha) Wilson, Roosevelt (Florena) Edwards and Robert Edwards, all of Sumter; two daughters, Mary A. (Esau) Walker of Sumter and Sarah (James) Prince of Manning; 18 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from the Galilee Baptist Church, Mayesville, with the Rev. Eugene Myers, pastor, eulogist.

Burial will be in Mayesville City cemetery, Mayesville.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Floral bearers will be family and friends.

The procession will leave at 1:15 p.m. from the home of her son, Jimmy Wilson, 144 Anderson St., Sumter.

HENRY A. THOMAS

COLUMBIA -- Henry A. "Hank" Thomas, 62, husband of Rugena V. Thomas, died Feb. 21, 2005, at Palmetto Health Baptist.

Born Sept. 10, 1942, in York, Ala., he was a son of the late Henry Amos Thomas and Mamie Lee Hood Thomas Bush. Hank moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, at the age of seven, where he grew up. He graduated from high school and joined the U.S. Air Force. He obtained a bachelor's degree from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tenn., and later became employed with the U.S. Federal Government, where he held positions with veterans hospitals in Tennessee, Alabama and Pennsylvania. He retired in November 2001 as EEO manager with the Dorn Veterans Medical Center, Columbia.

Survivors include his loving wife of 28 years, Rugena V. Thomas of Columbia; a daughter, Patricia T. Drakeford (Charles) of Orangeburg; a son, Henry A. Thomas Jr. of Columbia; foster mother, Edith Bushillon of Cincinnati; one granddaughter, Zaria M. Drakeford of Orangeburg; one goddaughter, Jasmine Jacobs of Powder Springs, Ga.; three brothers, Willie Bush of Cincinnati, Joseph Bush (Constance) of Detroit, Mich., and Sylvester Bush (Jacqueline) of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Georgia Lee Jackson (Ronald Sr.) of Cincinnati and Rosa Lee Bush of Maryland; mother-in-law, Willie B. Vaughn of Lynchburg; a special uncle and aunt, Jimmie Gulley of Detroit and Irene Lee of York, Ala.; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Mamie Lee Jones.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Greenlawn Chapel, Columbia, with the Rev. John C. Barr, pastor of Asbury United Methodist Church, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Herbert Shackelford and R.J. Jackson.

Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Goodman cemetery, Lynchburg.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 7217 Balmoral Drive, Columbia, SC 29209.

EULA MAE G. McDONALD

Eula Mae Gaither McDonald, 67, wife of the late Ernest McDonald, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Mecklenburg County, N.C., she was the daughter of Cleo Gaither Wilson and the late Laten Wilson. She was a member of Pine Hill African Methodist Episcopal Church. Sister Eula McDonald served the church with a tireless spirit in the following capacities: president of the senior usher board, pastor's aide and past president of the inspirational choir, and chairperson of the food committee. She was employed with National Health Care as a certified nurse assistant.

Survivors include five sons, Jeffrey B. (Paulette) Gaither of Charlotte, N.C., Ernie L. (Minnie) McDonald, Eric (Earth) McDonald, Michael McDonald and Dennis McDonald, all of Sumter; one daughter, Margaret Ann McDonald (Rodenc) Thompson of Sumter; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Bradford cemetery with the Rev. John Platt.

The family will receive friends at the home, 41 Walker Ave., Sumter.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.

JULIE HASSELL

Julie Violet Sweny Hassell, age 91, wife of Clarence R. Hassell, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005, at NHC Healthcare of Sumter.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter.

LOIS W. ROSEBERRY

NORTH AUGUSTA -- Lois Hattie White Roseberry, 72, widow of Ed Roseberry, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005, at University Hospital in Augusta, Ga.

Born May 12, 1932, in Manning, she was a daughter of Samuel Dewey and Bertha Ethel Ridgeway White. She was a retired cashier from Jerry's Truck Stop, and a member of Friendship Freewill Baptist Church in Manning.

She is survived by a son, Richard Posey and wife, Zoe, of North Augusta; two daughters, Lynn Nappari and husband, Wayne, of Glen Burnie, Md., and Marcia Plano and husband, Ed, of Fraziers Bottom, W.Va.; three brothers, Julius White and wife, Martha, of Greeleyville, Harry White and wife, Joan, of Prattville, Ala., and Don White of Coward; a sister, Lillian Ridgeway of Manning; three grandsons and three granddaughters.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Oak Grove cemetery in Manning with the Rev. Bennie Turner officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning and at other times at the residence of Archie and Gloria Coker, 1308 Caroustie Drive, Manning.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 520 Gervais St., Suite 300, Columbia, SC 29201 or the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 1131, Fairfax, VA 22038-1131.

DAVID COLLINS

David Collins, 62, husband of Sue McCray Collins, died Feb. 24, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 5, 1943, in Gable, he was a son of the late Junious Collins and Caroline White Collins.

The family will receive friends at the home, 213 Manhattan Ave., Sumter.

Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

PARRIS E. DAVIS

Parris Eugene Davis died on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa., on April 4, 1937, he was a son and third child of Elouise Pringle Davis and the late James Davis. Early in his life, he attended the Congruity Presbyterian Church and the Congruity Community School. He moved to New York and was employed in the garment industry for more than 20 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Ralph Davis; and two sisters, Lubertha Davis and Barbara Tucker.

Surviving are his mother, Elouise Pringle Davis of New York; three brothers, John E. (Catherine) Davis of Uniondale, N.Y., Bernard (Thelma) Davis of Philadelphia and Robert Tucker of Bronx, N.Y.; two sisters, Elaine Tucker of New York, N.Y., and Beverly Tucker of Norwalk, Conn.; and a devoted aunt, Idell Kingwood of Sumter.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Congruity Presbyterian Church, Gable, with the Rev. William Jones Jr. officiating minister.

Burial will be in the Billie Community cemetery.

The funeral procession will leave at 11 a.m. from the residence of his aunt, Idell Kingwood, 1853 Roach Road, Sumter.
