HENRY P. COTE

SEBASTIAN, Fla. -- Henry Phillip Cote, widower of Martha Ann Cote, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at the Sebastian River Medical Center in Sebastian.

Services will be announced by the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St., Sumter.

L.C. SANDERS

COLUMBIA -- Services for the Rev. L.C. Sanders, of Union, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sims Junior High School, 200 Sims Drive, Union, with burial in Memorial Union Gardens.

Visitation will be held at 4 p.m. today at Union Community Funeral Home.

Palmer Memorial Chapel of Columbia is in charge.

Rev. Sanders died Monday, Feb. 21, 2005. Born in Union County, he was the son of the late John and Eliza Pruitt Sanders. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Benedict College, where he later completed his master of divinity degree. He did further studies at the Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He was the founder of the School of Methods of Tumbling Shoals Association, Laurens County, and the Pocolet River Association, Union County, where he served as clerk (40 years) and dean of Christian education. He served as instructor in the Congress of Christian Education of the S.C. Missionary and Baptist Convention, as well as dean of Christian education. He culminated and was the announcer of the ministers variety radio hour, WBCU. He served as pastor of Wyatt Chapel Baptist Church and St. Paul Baptist Church (18 years), Union County; Mt. Zion Baptist Church and ended his pastorate at the Springfield Baptist Church, Laurens (34 years). He was a retired educator, as well as principal in the Union and Laurens county schools.

Surviving are his children, John Sullivan (Marjorie), Leslie Stanley, Carolyn Loretta (Pastor O.R.) Cleveland and Pastor Reba Lee (Todd) Williams; seven grands; and one great-grandchild.

CLARENCE N. DURHAM

WEST COLUMBIA -- Services for Clarence Norman Durham, 89, of West Columbia, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington, officiated by Pastor Danny Hedgepeth. Burial will follow at Southland Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Westside Baptist Church.

Mr. Durham died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005.

Born in Hall County, Ga., he was a son of the late John C. and Pearl Cain Durham. Mr. Durham was a member of Westside Baptist Church and the "Men Over 65 Years" Sunday school class. He was an Army veteran, having served in the First Armored Division during World War II, and was retired from Touchstone and Little Construction Co.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Rena H. Durham; and son, Norman David Durham of Cayce.

Mr. Durham was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Durham, and a sister, Minnie Bell Williams.

JASPER EDWARDS

Jasper Edwards, 53, husband of Mary Alice Drayton Edwards, died Feb. 24, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.

Born Aug. 18, 1951, in Lee County, he was a son of Catherine Edwards.

Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

JULIE S. HASSELL

Julie Violet Sweny Hassell, age 91, beloved husband of 71 years to Clarence R. Hassell, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005, at NHC Healthcare of Sumter.

Mrs. Hassell was born in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of the late Walter V. Sweny and Rosa Weber Sweny. She was a member of Swan Lake Presbyterian Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, William C. Hassell and his wife, Donna, of Erie, Pa., and John A. Hassell and his wife, Vera, of Ambridge, Pa.; one daughter, Brenda K. Joslin and her husband, David, of Sumter; two brothers, Walter Sweny and his wife, Jeannette, of Hurst, Texas, and Herbert S. Sweny of Erie, Pa.; one sister, Mable Maurer of Carlsbad, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Swan Lake Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Ken Thomas officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Swan Lake Presbyterian Church, 912 Haynsworth St., Sumter, SC 29150.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home for the arrangements.

ALBERT JOHNSON

Albert Johnson, 49, departed this life on Saturday night, Feb. 19, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

He was born Feb. 19, 1956, in Clarendon County, a son of the late Henry Johnson and Ethel Mae Benbow Sweat Johnson. Mr. Johnson attended the public schools of Clarendon County. He was an employee of Cooper for many years and also the lumber plant in Clarendon County. At an early age, he joined Fourth Crossroad Baptist Church, where he attended church regularly, finding strength and understanding in knowing Jesus.

He is survived by a son, Baron Gordon of Manning; five brothers, Ronnie E. Johnson and Johnny M. (Eartha) Johnson, both of the home, Calvin (Thelma) Johnson of Paxville, Cleveland (Robertha) Sweat and Charles E. Sweat, both of Manning; four sisters, Rebecca (Roosevelt) Sinkler of Pinewood, Rutha Mae Rose and Nancy D. (Junior) Rose, both of Sumter, and Victoria Gibson of Paxville; two sisters-in-law, Edith and Elizabeth Sweat; three aunts, Sarah Sweat, Eva Mae Johnson and Phoebe Lou Sweatte; two special cousins reared in the home, Wilbert and Edward Clark; a devoted fiance', Ilene Simon, and her three children whom he loved dearly.

Services for Mr. Johnson will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fourth Crossroad Baptist Church in Manning with the Rev. George K. Carter, pastor, officiating, assisted by Pastor Charles Smith. Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery.

The funeral procession will leave the home, 1684 Sweatt Road, at 1:30 p.m.

The family is receiving friends at the home, 1684 Sweatt Road.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. is in charge of the arrangements.

MILDRED J. FOXWORTH

BISHOPVILLE -- Mildred Josey Foxworth, 96, widow of Thomas Daniel Foxworth Jr., died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness.

Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Luther Fleming Josey and the late Edith Scarborough Josey. Mrs. Foxworth was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bishopville and was retired from Levenson's after 30 years of service. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Manville Lodge No. 44, for 67 years and served as the lodge secretary for more than 50 years.

Survivors include a son, Daniel Merriell Foxworth and his wife, Earline, of Bishopville; a daughter, Harriett Foxworth Skinner and her husband, Don, of Aiken; a brother, Luther Fleming Josey Jr. and his wife, Mary, of St. Charles; three sisters, Floride J. Reynolds of Andrews, Wave J. Parks of Lexington and Lucia J. Caldwell and her husband, Jim, of Prosperity; two sisters-in-law, Elva H. Josey of Beaufort and Catherine F. Griggs and her husband, Bobby, of Holly Hill; seven step-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the First Baptist Church in Bishopville with the Rev. Dale Warren officiating.

Burial will be in the Piedmont cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home and other times at the home, 518 W. Church St.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Bishopville, 229 W. Church St., Bishopville, SC 29010, or to a charity of one's choice.

Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

BARBARA G. DAWKINS

MANNING -- Barbara Jane Galloway Dawkins, 58, wife of James Robert Dawkins, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, in Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.

Born Oct. 14, 1946, in Manning, she was a daughter of Marian Geddings Galloway and the late Edward Aaron Galloway. She was a former office manager and office consultant and a member of Paxville Baptist Church.

Surviving besides her mother of Sumter and husband of Manning are two sons, Bryan Dawkins and wife, Audra, of Paxville and Kevin Dawkins and wife, Melissa, of Sumter; three grandchildren, Aaron, Phillip and Darren Dawkins.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Gene Mosier and the Rev. Mark Bishop officiating.

Burial will follow in Paxville Baptist Church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Joe Connor, James Tisdale, Craig Blend, Ronald Prosser, Hank Spigner and Danal Hutson.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning and at other times at the residence, 1141 Pocalla Drive, Manning.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association, Midstate S.C. Chapter, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202-7044.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

JOANN C. OSTEEN

JoAnn Copeland Osteen, 65, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at a local nursing center.

Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late John Lewis Copeland and the late Esther Brunson Copeland Marshall. Mrs. Osteen was a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was retired as the owner and operator of the Lingerie Boutique.

Survivors include two sons, Ricky Osteen and his wife, Clara G., and Johnny Osteen, all of Sumter; two daughters, Sonja O. Curry and her husband, Bobby, and Ann Atkins and her husband, Jay, all of Sumter; a brother, John L. Copeland and his wife, Shirley, of Sumter; five grandchildren, Amy Geddings, Byron Osteen, Tanner Curry, Jakob Curry and Ashleigh Atkins; and a great-grandson, Kalib Koeling.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Alice Drive Baptist Church with Dr. Clay Smith and the Rev. Tommy Comer officiating.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home, 2900 South Wise Drive.

Memorials may be made to Alice Drive Baptist Church, 1305 Loring Mill Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

The family requests that pink be worn in memory of Mrs. Osteen.

HARRY LEE COOPER Jr.

Harry Lee "Coop" Cooper Jr., 48, husband of Theresa Plowden Cooper, died Feb. 19, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born March 13, 1956, in St. Charles, Lee County, he was a son of the late Harry Lee Cooper Sr. and Dorothy Rouse Cooper. Harry attended the public schools of Lee County until the age of 15. He moved to Philadelphia, Pa., and attended Oloney High School and later received a certificate as a C-N-C machine operator from Sumter Area Technical College. He was employed by Federal Mogul and later by Caterpillar, until his illness.

Survivors include his wife, Theresa P. Cooper of Sumter; a daughter, Charmaine V. Lee of Philadelphia; one grandson, Damaine Kevin Lee of Philadelphia; four sisters, Addie M. (Buddie) Davis of Sumter, Earnestine D. (Eddie) Shields of Hinesville, Ga., Dorothy A. (Lee) Elder of Raleigh, N.C., and Laquetta Mackey of Norfolk, Va.; one brother, James W. (Sophia) Cooper of Sumter; three sisters-in-law, Gwendolyn A. Smalls of Columbia, Emma (Leon) Rose and Corretta G. (Carlos) Plowden, both of Sumter; grandmother, Mary Rouse of Mayesville; mother-in-law, Helen Plowden of Sumter; one uncle; five aunts; a special aunt, Sue Mae Wells of Mayesville; six granduncles; six grandaunts; 22 nieces and nephews; two grandnieces; one grandnephew; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Larry Cooper, and one sister, Othene "Feany" McDonald.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Unionville AME Church, St. Charles, with the Rev. Joshua DuPree, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Unionville AME Church cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The family is receiving friends at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Addie Mae (Buddie) Davis, 1125 Weatherly Court, Sumter, SC 29150.

RALPH McFADDEN

Ralph "Red" McFadden, 64, died Feb. 22, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 12, 1940, in Elliott, Lee County, he was a son of the late Blossom Franklin and grandson of the late Ralph and Carrie Bell McFadden. He was educated in the public schools of Lee County and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1961. He attended Morris College and, while there, became interested in the ministry. His initial sermon was preached at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Elliott. Shortly thereafter, he became ill. He was a good baseball player, a caring and loving person, and put forth his best in whatever he did.

Survivors include five sisters, his twin, Algia (James) McCray of Sumter, Alveta Thompasionas, Patricia Franklin and Charlene Franklin, all of New York, and Peggy Ann Solomon (Blair) Bergen of New Jersey; nine brothers, Marvin Franklin, Eugene Franklin and Luther Franklin, all of New York, Nathaniel Isaac of Lynchburg, John Mark Solomon, Thomas Edward Solomon and Timothy Solomon, all of New Jersey, Samuel Wesley Solomon of Tampa, Fla., and Roosevelt Scott of New York; three aunts, Dorothy McFadden, Annie Lee McFadden and Mary Thomas; two uncles, Henry McFadden and James McFadden; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Elliott, with the Rev. Rufus L. Snowden, pastor. Burial will be in the St. Paul United Methodist Church cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

The family is receiving friends at the residence of his sister and brother-in-law, Algia (James) McCray, 1317 Covent Garden, Sumter, SC 29153.
