BERNICE L. BOYKIN

Bernice Lowery Boykin, 78, wife of the late Paskell (Pat) Woodward Boykin, died Friday, March 4, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Kershaw County, she was a daughter of the late Raymond Lee Lowery and the late Alma Cassidy Lowery.

Mrs. Boykin worked for many years at Pioneer LTD until its closing and later retired from Tuomey Regional Medical Center with 22 years of service.

Surviving are two sons, Edward E. (Gene) Boykin and his wife, Gloria, and Avery W. Boykin Sr. and his wife, Gayle; three daughters, Linda Whitaker, Darlene Timmons and her husband, John, and Debbie Dixon and her fiancee, Terry Anderson, all of Sumter; one brother, Richard L. Lowery and his wife, Esther; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and a very special friend Nadine Morris.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Tidwell.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Revs. Eugene Moisier and Tim Tomlinson officiating.

Burial will be in the Sumter cemetery.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Phil Brandt and Dr. James Cahill.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 32 Lemmon St.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St., Sumter, is in charge of the arrangements.

CATHERINE MOURITZEN

Catherine Mouritzen, 86, widow of Robert Mouritzen, died Friday, March 4, 2005, in Lake City.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late John Abel and the late Katherine VanHouten Abel.

She is survived by a son, Robert Mouritzen of Columbia.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Sumter cemetery.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St., Sumter, is in charge of arrangements.

STEPHEN 'J.L.' COOKE Sr.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Stephen "J.L." Cooke Sr., 67, former husband of the late Clara Mae Williams Cooke, died Friday, March 4, 2005, at Willow Crest Hospice Center.

Born Aug. 9, 1937, in Sumter County he was a son of the late Austin Cooke Sr. and the late Carrie Jackson Cooke.

The family will receive friends at the home of his sister and brother, Mae Ruth Cooke and Elijah Cooke, 4230 Dubose Siding Road, Sumter.

Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel, Inc. of Sumter.

MILDRED L. BALLARD

HARTSVILLE -- Funeral services for Mildred Lynn Ballard, 47, who died March 5, 2005, will be at 3 p.m. Monday from the New Providence Baptist Church.

Burial will be in the New Providence cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home and visitation will be today from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Miss Ballard was born in Darlington County, a daughter of Clara Bell Hall Ballard and the late George Gus Ballard Jr.

Surviving besides her mother of Hartsville are two sisters, Jessie Louise Rogers of Hartsville and Nancy (Donald) Brown of Sumter; two nieces, Ginger (George) Green III of Hartsville and Donya Elle Brown of Sumter, and one great nephew, George (GG) Green of Hartsville.

She was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Troy Rogers and a sister, Augusta Ballard.

ANNIE M. McFADDEN

EFFINGHAM -- Annie McFadden McFadden, 79, widow of Horton McFadden, died Friday, March 4, 2005, at Regency Hospital in Florence.

Born April 8, 1925, in the New Zion section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late George McFadden and Maggie Holland McFadden.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Ricky McCullough, 3831 Sherry Johnson Road in Effingham.

Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home, LLC of Manning.

DONTRELL McFADDEN

Dontrell Antwan McFadden, 18, of Sumter, died Jan. 2, 2005, in Palmetto Richland Health Hospital in Columbia.

He was born Nov. 26, 1986, in Sumter County, and was a son of Ernest Green and Shelia McFadden.

"Trell, " as he was affectionately known by his family and friends, attended Lakewood High School and was employed by Bojangles. At a young age he developed a love for music. In the community, he was well known and loved by many. He will be fondly remembered.

Survivors include his father, Ernest (Wanda) Green and his mother, Shelia McFadden (Ignatius Brown) all of Sumter; two brothers, Eric and Travis McFadden of Sumter; two sisters, Ericka Calhoun and Ororo Green of Sumter; maternal grandparents, Willie (Betty) McFadden of Lake City; maternal great-grandmother, Teaster McFadden of Sumter; maternal great-grandfather, Carl McFadden of Lake City; paternal grandfather, LeErnest Young of New York; paternal grandmother, Evelyn Green of Sumter; paternal great-grandmother, Daisy Young of Manning; three aunts, Williett (Russell) Dukes of Durham, N.C., Dawnynetta (Robert) Polite of Lake City, Janet (Jimmy) Joe of Elliot; four uncles, Willie Bill McFadden Jr., and Christopher (Vickie) Green of Sumter, Derick and Eric Young of New York, a special cousin, Desmon Green and two special friends, Mike Nelson and Howard Logan Jr.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Diane McFadden, who also raised him; his paternal great-grandmother, Robertha Green and paternal great-grandfather, Richard Green.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday from the Green Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Green Hill Church Road, Alcolu. Elder Ray K. Ingram, eulogist, will be officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Missionary Baptist Church cemetery.

The procession will leave at 11:45 a.m. from the home of his father, Ernest Green, 4453 Reona Ave., and 12:20 p.m. from the home of his mother, Shelia McFadden, 119 Murphy St.

HILDA LEE D. BECK

MANNING -- Hilda Lee Dudney Beck, 83, widow of McDuffie Beck, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Pickens, after a lengthy illness.

Born March 12, 1921, in Fair Bluff, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Maynard Norton and Celia Henrietta Nance Dudney. She was a retired seamstress and a member of Clarendon Baptist Church in Alcolu.

Surviving are two sons, Jerry F. Beck and wife, Sandy, of Easley and Richard N. Beck of Manning; three daughters, Janet B. Brewer and husband, Hartley, and Peggy B. Fetta of Manning and Alice Tompkins and husband, Ed, of Pickens; two brothers, Ruyland Dudney of Fair Bluff and Claude Dudney of Aurora, Colo.; seven grandchildren, Gil Brewer and wife, Becky, of Sumter, Mandy Davidson and husband, Jim, of Clemson, Gary Hilton of Calabash, N.C., Joey Siconolfi of Walhalla, Joshua Beck of Easley and Clay and Isaac Beck of Pickens; one great-grandchild, Blake Davidson of Clemson.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Norman Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers are Gil Brewer, Gary Hilton, Rudy Hill, Joey Siconolfi, Jim Davidson and Donnie Mahoney.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home, prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to the Parkinson Research Foundation Inc., 6283 Dunaway Court, McLean, VA 22101.

MARION R. STEPHENSON

BISHOPVILLE -- Marion Ruffin Stephenson, 90, widow of Ray Davis Stephenson, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at Kershaw County Medical Center.

Born in Bishopville, she was a daughter of the late Colin Bradley Ruffin and the late Mabel Fountain Ruffin. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Bishopville. She attended Breneau University in Gainesville, Ga.

Survivors include two daughters, Sally Stephenson Fuller of Danville, Va., and Zylphia Stephenson Quattlebaum of Greenville; a son, Colin Ruffin Stephenson of Greenville; grandchildren, Arthur Marvin Quattlebaum Jr., Michael Patterson Quattlebaum, Caroline Quattlebaum Arnall of Newnan, Ga., Martin Clay Adams of Aiken and David Ruffin Stephenson of Greenville; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dale Warren officiating.

Burial will be in the Piedmont cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10:15 to 11 a.m. Saturday in the church.

JOYCE P. ARDIS

EUTAWVILLE -- Mrs. Joyce P. Ardis, 72, of 118 Driftwood Drive, Eutawville, wife of Ray Ardis, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, in Charleston hospital.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Eutawville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Curtis Felkel and the Rev. John Scott officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in the Sumter cemetery in Sumter.

Pallbearers will be grandsons.

Mrs. Ardis was born in Buffalo, N.Y., a daughter of the late Lyle Petteys and Frances Van Skiver Petteys. She was a retired secretary and a member of the Eutawville United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband of the home; daughter, Wende Lodge of Jacksonville, Fla.; step-daughter, Jennie Skelton of Sumter; sons, James Baun of Atlanta and Chris Baun of Sumter; step-son Michael Ardis of Irving, Texas; and 10 grandchildren.

Friends may call at Avinger Funeral Home in Holly Hill from 4 to 6 p.m. this afternoon.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the building fund of Eutawville UMC, P.O. Box 362, Eutawville, SC 29048.

KENNETH B. OAKLEY Jr.

Kenneth Banks Oakley Jr., 66, husband of Robbie M. Oakley, died Sunday, March 6, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Arrington, Nelson County, Va., on Sept. 4, 1938, he was a son of the late Kenneth B. Oakley Sr. and the late Cora Purvis Oakley. Mr. Oakley was a member of the Nelson United Methodist Church in Arrington. He graduated from the Nelson County School systems of Virginia.

He served his country in the United States Air Force for 22 years, retiring as a master sergeant in 1977. He then attended the Nashville Auto Diesel College in Tennessee. After graduating from NADC in 1978, he was made the first diesel mechanics instructor for the state public school system, serving as the diesel mechanics instructor at the Sumter County Career Center. In 1999, he retired from teaching after 20 years. Following his second retirement, he enjoyed the outdoors and his vegetable gardens.

Survivors besides his wife of 38 years include a son, Keith Darnell Oakley and his wife, Amy; two granddaughters, Rachel and Megan Oakley; and a sister, Thelma Jones of Arrington.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth O. Miller and Mary O. Saunders, both of Arrington.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Holley officiating.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with full military honors.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Anderson, Larry Culick, William Dyson, Thomas Felder, Eddie Jackson and John Weathers.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.
