ALVIN M. LEVINE

Alvin Murray Levine, 84, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, March 9, 2005, at Sardis Oaks.

His funeral service will be held 3:30 p.m. today in the Wilson Chapel of Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service, 5301 Albemarle Road, Charlotte, with Rabbi Jeremy Barras of Temple Beth El officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday in the cemetery of the Church of the Ascension in Rembert.

Born May 15, 1920, in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of the late Isadore J. and Jennie Gewirtzman, Al attended St. John's University in Brooklyn and was employed by Wonderland of Knowledge Inc. for 23 years and by Cablevision for more than four years. He retired in 1996, having worked since 1983 as a courier for ADP of Charlotte.

In New York, Al had been a member of his Temple choir. Since his move to Charlotte, he had been active in the Coventry Woods Neighborhood Watch, worked to promote outdoor handball and was a member of Temple Beth El.

On Oct. 26, 1998, Al was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Alston Levine.

Never having met a stranger, Al lived life to the fullest. He enjoyed singing. After retirement, in addition to relaxing poolside, he enjoyed bowling and Panthers' games with his daughter. He'll be missed by all of those fortunate enough to have known him.

Among Al's survivors are his devoted daughter, Janet Marie Levine of Charlotte; his sister, Florence Brown of Brooklyn; a special nephew, Stuart Brown of Manhattan, N.Y.; and several other nephews, nieces and cousins.

Memorials may be made to Temple Beth El, 5101 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28226, or to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 E. 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204.

The family wishes to extend their special thanks to the staff of Sardis Oaks.

LEGATHA M. McFADDEN

NEW ZION -- The Rev. Legatha Montgomery McFadden, 52, wife of Thomas McFadden, died March 16, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

Born Dec. 5, 1952, in New Zion, she was a daughter of Christine Montgomery and the late Benjamin McFadden. She was a 1969 graduate of Walker Gamble High School and she was a graduate of Morris College with a bachelor of science degree. She received a master's degree in education from Cambridge College, Cambridge, Mass. At an early age, she joined Howard Chapel AME Church and served faithfully as musician of the church, choir director, missionary president, YPD director, class leader, and assistant pastor. She was employed by Sumter School District 2 at Brewington Academy. In 2000, she accepted her calling to the ministry and was admitted by the class of admissions to the Northeast South Carolina Annual Conference and ordained an intinerant deacon in the AME Church.

Survivors besides her husband, Thomas McFadden of the home, and mother, Christine Montgomery of New Zion, include one daughter, Rhonda K. McFadden of Olanta; one grandchild reared as her own, Kayrondra Benjamin of Olanta; five brothers, Ernest L. Montgomery, Curlie Montgomery, Nathaniel (Sylvia) McFadden, James L. (Barbara) McFadden, Clarence (Mary) McFadden, all of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and three sisters, Carrie Dell Myers of New Zion, Katie (Roy) Rattray and Betharee Tomlin, both of Fort Lauderdale.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Viewing will be held from noon to 9 p.m. today.

A wake service will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, Manning.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Walker-Gamble Elementary School, Walker-Gamble Road, New Zion, with the Rev. Edward Roberts, pastor, officiating, the Rev. Jerome McCray presiding, assisting Presiding Elder R.L. McCants, the Revs. Jacqueline Fulmore, Eddie Mayes and Minnie Pearl Johnson.

Burial will be in the Howard Chapel AME Church cemetery.

The body will be placed in the school at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

The family will receive friends at the home of her sister, Carrie Dell Myers, 5960 Old Manning Road, New Zion.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

HORACE COOK

Horace Cook, 36, departed this life Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, after a fatal truck accident on Interstate 75 in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Born in Queens, N.Y., on Aug. 18, 1972, he was a son of Benjamin F. Cook and Edith (Elijah) Gayle. In his youth, Horace moved from Queens to Sumter in March 1987. He graduated from Sumter High School. After graduation, he worked for Champion Rent to Own as an account manager. Later he pursued and entered a career as a tractor-trailer driver. He moved to the Atlanta, Ga., area and worked for several truck companies, including Keystone Petroleum Transport Inc. At an early age, he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and attended World Changes Ministries in College Park, Ga. He enjoyed listening to and arranging hip-hop music with lyrics, writing poetry, spending time with family and close friends and traveling. Horace was truly the breath of life by providing a great sense of humor to any tense situation and a focused determination in the face of adversity.

Left to share memories of his life are his stepchildren, Lamont Jackson and Chase Daniels; three brothers, Benjamin (Tamika) of Columbia and Thomas Gayle and Darren Cook of Queens; a sister, Eve N. (Glen) Mack of Mayesville; three nieces, Giona T. Mack, Jahmya K. Segar and Isis A. Cook; a special friend, Johanna Rivera of Norcoss, Ga.; and a host of aunts, uncles, family and friends.

He was preceded in death by a grandmother, Emma D. Felder, and a cousin, John "John John" Lee.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday from John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter, with Elder Marlin J. Clemmons officiating, eulogist.

The family will receive friends at the home of his mother and stepfather, Elijah and Edith Gayle, 363 South St., Sumter. The procession will leave from the home of his mother and stepfather at 1:30 p.m.

Services directed by the staff and management of Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

JOHNNIE LEE McKNIGHT

Johnnie Lee "Kevin" McKnight, 36, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Lee County on Aug. 22, 1972, he was a son of Johnnie Woods and Carolyn McKnight.

The family will receive friends at the home of his father, Johnnie Woods, 56 Colin Lee Lane, Mayesville.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

JACK BUCHANAN

Retired Lt. Col. Jack Buchanan, 89, widower of his beloved wife of 61 years, Darthula Belle Wolfe Buchanan, passed into eternal life with his family by his side at his residence in Wilmington, N.C., on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008.

Born in Bristol, Va., on June 1, 1919, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Preston Buchanan of Bristol. Jack graduated from Bristol Virginia High School in 1938, where he played center and punter on the football team. He was awarded the school's "Best All-Round Boy, " which he later stated was his most prized lifetime achievement. Jack graduated from Emory and Henry College in 1942. In college, he lettered in basketball and was the captain of the track team. Jack began medical school at the University of Virginia in 1942 but because of his desire to serve his country during World War II, he joined the Army Air Corps in 1943 as a pilot.

Jack had a distinguished military career and served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1943 to 1964, 66th Tac Recon Wing, 30th TRS, Germany, France, Guam, and Korea. He flew as a B-25 pilot/instructor in World War II and had more than 1, 000 hours in this bomber, although his favorite bomber to fly was the B-26. After World War II, he was involved in the post-war atomic tests named Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll. Jack later fought in Korea as a Mosquito pilot, where he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Among many other medals, he also received the Air Force Commendation Medal and Air Medal during his military career. Jack was later stationed and retired at Shaw Air Force Base, where he flew his last military airplane, the RF-101 Voodoo. In all, Jack had the opportunity to fly 18 different military aircraft during his career, starting with a cloth BT-13 and ending in the high performance RF-101. He simply loved flying and the common bond among pilots. (To quote Jack after he told a good story, " ... and some of this is true!")

Jack was personnel manager at Korn Industries in Sumter from 1964 to 1983. He was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church for more than 40 years, the Sumter Historical Society, Hospice, Pee Dee Golf Association, and was a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club.

Jack is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth "Betsy" Buck and husband, Rob, of Columbia; and son, Dr. William "Bill" Buchanan and wife, Brandi, of Wilmington. His cherished grandchildren are Jonathan Buck and wife, Lea, Elizabeth, Michael and Susan Buck, all of Columbia, and Kara, Will and Matthew Buchanan, all of Wilmington.

He was preceded in death by a son, Jack Buchanan Jr.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the loving care provided by Lakeshore Commons, the physicians and staff of New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Assistcare, and Lower Cape Fear Hospice.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Evergreen Memorial Park in Sumter.

The family will receive friends following the service at Evergreen.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Lower Cape Fear Hospice.

JAMES E. MAYBERRY

James Edward "Eddie" Mayberry, 52, husband of Sheila Benenhaley Mayberry, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, at Palmetto Health Richland.

Born in Chattanooga, Tenn., he was a son of James O. and Louise Ann Lumpkins Mayberry. Mr. Mayberry was employed by Gold Kist and Pilgrims Pride for 16 years.

Survivors include his wife of Wedgefield; parents of Sumter; two daughters, Suzette Yvonne Yost of Sumter and Tonya Marie Mayberry Wilson of Florida; two grandchildren, Yvonne Denise Yost and James Robert Yost; a brother, William Todd Mayberry of Wedgefield; three uncles, Kenneth Lumpkins of Kansas, Claude Smith of Alabama and Robert Mayberry of Florida; three aunts, Shirley Lambert of North Carolina, Linda Lumpkins of Idaho and Mary Turner of Tennessee; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lynn Gardner officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Darrell Witt, George Holland, Gene Allen Croft, Alan Smith, Vic Truesdale and Kevin Lamb.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of his parents, 2033 Greenville Circle.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 950 48th Ave. North, Suite 101, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577.

JAMES DELAIN

James Delain, 90, husband of Willie Mae Olden Delain, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter County on Aug. 23, 1918, he was a son of the late Manuel and Elease Gadson Delain.

The family will receive friends at the family home, 5090 Cain Savannah Road, Wedgefield.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

MARY FRANCES HUGHES

Mary Frances Hughes, 88, widow of Robert Hughes, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008, at her residence in Lynchburg.

She was born in Lynchburg, a daughter of the late Frank and Mary Player Dickey.

The family is receiving friends at the home of her daughter, Deloris Tapp, 205 Wildwood Drive, Sumter, SC 29154.

Funeral plans are incomplete and will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

HENRY NELSON Jr.

MANNING -- Henry Nelson Jr., 69, husband of Mary Ramsey Nelson, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008, at his residence.

Born Dec. 12, 1939, in Alcolu, he was a son of the late Henry Sr. and Olivia Harrison Nelson and stepson of Theola Wilson.

The family is receiving friends at the home, 1060 Sammie Nelson Road, Alcolu.

These services have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

JOE LEWIS GIBBONS

Joe Lewis Gibbons, 67, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter County on Dec. 9, 1941, he was a son of William Frank and Mattie Cousar Gibbons.

The family will receive friends at his home, 350 Oklahoma Drive, Sumter.
