Fay Harmon Knight
November 13, 2007

Fay Harmon Knight, 86, of 100 Finley Road, Columbia, widow of John A. “Jack” Knight to whom she was married for 47 years, died Tuesday at her residence.
She was born on September 22, 1921 in Pomaria, a daughter of the late John M. and Edna Koon Harmon. She graduated from Columbia Hospital School of Nursing in 1945. She was a WW II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army, Army Nurses Corps. She served as a nurse at Fort Benning, Ga. and Fort Bragg, NC. Following her military career, she continued her nursing with the Veteran’s Administration for the remainder of her career. She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Columbia and was an associate member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Pomaria.
Mrs. Knight is survived by two nieces, Mary Ann H. Slaton of Spartanburg and Martha H. Blackmon of Charlotte and a circle of extended family. She was predeceased by a brother, John Virgil Harmon. The family would like to thank Judy L. Graham, a cousin, for her special care of Fay over these last years.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 P.M. Saturday at St. Matthews Lutheran Church by the Rev. Dr. Herman R. Yoos and Rev. Dr. Mark Bredholt.
Memorials may be made to the St. Matthews Lutheran Church, PO Box 170, Pomaria, SC 29126 or to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 3909 Forest Dr., Columbia, SC 29204.

W. Thomas “Tom” Werts

W. Thomas “Tom” Werts, 88, of 1126 Reeder Road, Newberry, died Tuesday, November 6, 2007 at his residence.
He was born on Feb. 7, 1919 in Silverstreet, a son of the late Edwin L. “Ed” and Annie Lake Werts. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II and after 44 years of employment retired from Greenwood Mills, Joanna Plant in 1984.
He was a member of Bush River Baptist Church. In 1998 the Church recognized him for his 25 years of service as the church treasurer and for his many years of faithful service to the church including serving as Deacon, Choir Member, Royal Ambassador leader, Intermediate Boys Sunday School teacher and as a member of the Men’s Brotherhood. Additionally he was awarded perfect attendance pins for his many years of faithful attendance.
Mr. Werts is survived by three daughters, and two sons-in-law, Tommie Ann Danielsen and Betsy and Rickey Chapman all of Newberry and Rachel and Ron Gilmore of Summerville; four grandchildren, Laura D. Cousins, Rachel V. Gilmore, Jeannie and Will Chapman; a great grandson, Caleb McCain Gilmore and three sisters, Novice Hunter and Mildred Boozer both of Silverstreet and Katherine Simpson of Simpsonville. He was predeceased by his wife, Annie Floyd Werts, infant daughter, Minnie Elizabeth Werts, son-in-law, Larry Danielsen, granddaughter, Kristy Danielsen, and three brothers, Henry Walter Werts, Robert Edwin Werts, and Lewis Werts.
Funeral services were conducted at 3:00 P.M. Friday, in Bush River Baptist Church by the Rev. Brian Horton and the Rev. Lamar King. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Visitation was from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family was at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Rickey Chapman, 1234 Sims Abrams Road, Newberry.
Memorials may be made to Bush River Baptist Church, c/o John E. Smith 3903 Bush River Road, Kinards, SC 29355 or to Palmetto Health Hospice, PO Box 352, Newberry, SC 29108.
Active pallbearers were Will Chapman, Randy McCain, Harold Hunter, Jr., Bobby Hunter, Kenneth Floyd, and Guy Floyd. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Men’s Sunday School Class, Yoder Bedenbaugh and former members of the Bush River Senior Center, former Royal Ambassadors of the Bush River Baptist Church, and the employees of Angel Care of Newberry.

James H. “Jay” Lucas

James H. “Jay” Lucas, 72, of 2432 Fair St., Newberry, widower of Dolly Ann Jeffcoat Lucas, died Sunday, November 04, 2007 at his residence.
He was born on September 19, 1935 in Columbia, a son of the late Henry T. and Minie Shiver Lucas. He was a veteran of the United States Army and was the owner of James Lucas general Contracting. He was a member of Glenn Street Baptist Church, the Newberry Country Club; and the Newberry Moose Lodge.
He is survived by five sons and three daughters-in-law, Keith & Martha Lucas and David and Christine Lucas all of Newberry, James Lucas of Prosperity, Kenny and Lynn Lucas of Whitmire, and Lloyd Lucas of Newberry; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.
Memorial service was conducted at 10:00 AM Tuesday at Glenn Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Jeff O’Dell and the Rev. Erskine Shiver.
Visitation was from 5:30 to 7:30 PM Monday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. The family will be at his residence.

Patricia Bedenbaugh Perkins
Nov. 3, 2007

Patricia Bedenbaugh Perkins, 74, of 646 Little Pond Road, Easley, widow of Billy R. Perkins, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007, at her daughter’s residence.
She was born on April, 30, 1933 in Newberry, a daughter of the late Julian M. and Ellen Ouzts Bedenbaugh
She was a former private care nurse and was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Marietta.
Mrs. Perkins is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Belinda and Tommy Bennett of Greenwood, Julia and Robert Taylor of Conway and Sandra and Mark Miller of Easley; two sons, Steve Perkins of Travelers Rest and Jeff Perkins of Greenwood; nine grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services were conducted at 4:00 PM Monday in the West End Cemetery in Newberry by the Rev. Eddie Caps.
Visitation was from 2:00 to 3:30 PM Monday at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry prior to the funeral service.
Memorials may be made to Open Arms Hospice, St. Francis Hospital, One St. Francis Dr., Greenville, SC 29601.

Elizabeth Floyd Cousins

Elizabeth Floyd Cousins, 94, of 660 Mallard Dr., Chapin, widow of Jackson R. Cousins, died Saturday, December 29, 2007 in Saluda, NC at the home of her daughter.
Mrs. Cousins was born in Newberry County, a daughter of the late J. Yancy and Cora Maybin Floyd. She and her husband were the former owners of Suburban Food Store in Columbia. She was a member of St. Thomas Lutheran Church and the Mary Parks Circle.
She is survived by her daughter, Narvice Gilbert of Saluda; a sister, Willie Ruff of Prosperity; three grandchildren, Cassandra Conner and her husband Tim, Wendell F. Gilbert, and Randall C. Gilbert; and two great granddaughters, Megan Davis and her husband John and Heather Conner. She was predeceased by two sisters, Ellie Floyd and Eula F. Cousins, her brother, J. Reuben Floyd, and her son-in-law, Fred Gilbert.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 PM Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
The family did receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to St. Thomas Lutheran Church, 215 St. Thomas Rd., Chapin SC 29036.
Active pallbearers were Wendell Gilbert, Randall Gilbert, Gaston Floyd, Reuben Floyd, Yancy Floyd, Lloyd Cousins, and Floyd Cousins.

Norris E. Hallman
December 28, 2007

Norris E. Hallman, 80, of 117 Green Meadow Dr., Chapin, died Friday, December 28, 2007 at his residence.
He was born on October 10, 1927 in Leesville, a son of the late James O. “Jim” and Katie Johnson Hallman. He was a retired Poultry Farmer and a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, the Adult Sunday School Class, Lutheran Men and Prime Timers.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Margaret Frick Hallman of Chapin; a daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Charles Frick of Little Mountain; two sons and daughters-in-law, Benny and Janice Hallman and Donnie and Lynne Hallman all of Chapin; a brother and sister-in- law Houston and Patsy Hallman of Gilbert; seven grandchildren, Angela Conder, Charles Everett Frick, Andrew Carroll Frick, Kenny Hallman, Deena Hallman, Corey Hallman and Brittany Hallman; and one great grandson, Ryan Charles Conder. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
Funeral services were 3:00 PM Monday at St. Peter Lutheran Church by the Rev. David Tholstrup. The casket was placed in the church at 2:00 PM. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Visitation was from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Sunday at the Whitaker Funeral Home, Chapin. The family was at the residence, 117 Green Meadow Dr.
Active pallbearers were Charles Everett Frick, Andrew Frick, Kenny Hallman, Corey Hallman, Kelvin Frick, Melvin Frick and Welch Conder. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Prime Timers.
Memorials may be made to St. Peter Lutheran Church, 900 Dreher Island Road, Chapin 29036.
The family would like the give a special thank you to Dr. Tripp Jones and Dr. Rosemary Lambert-Falls, his care giver, Mae Savoy and to Teresa with Tri County Hospice.

Rev. Dr. L. E. Virgil Carico
December 16, 2007

Rev. Dr. L. E. Virgil Carico, 79, of 142 Cannon Spring Dr., Newberry, died Sunday, December 16, 2007 at the Newberry County Memorial Hospital.
He was born on March 25, 1928 in Pound, VA, a son of the late Luther E. and Inez Davis Carico. He retired as a SSgt. in the U.S. Air Force after twenty years of service, having servered during WW II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He also retired from the ministry in the Christian Church, having served the Newberry Christian Church for 10 years.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Lester Carico of Newberry; a daughter, Deborah A. “Debbie” C. Fritts of Charleston; a son, Robert A. “Bobby” Carico of Newberry; three sisters, Juanita (Tom) Foley of Coco Beach FL, Eva Mae (Willis) Newsome of Louisa KY and Sue (Homer) Lyons of Lowmansville KY; three brothers, Billy Ray (Tillie) Young, Carl (Linda) Castle, and Bobby Castle all of Louisa KY; two grandchildren Travis Lee Carico and Robert Allen Carico, Jr.; and three step-grandchildren, Kenneth Gillespie, Garron Gillespie, and Tara Gillespie. He was predeceased by a sister, Elaine C. Castle; a brother, Herbert K. Carico; and his step-father, Edgar Castle.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 PM Wednesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home by the Rev. Mike Lyles. Interment was in Newberry Memorial Gardens with military honors.
The family was at the residence, 142 Cannon Spring Dr., Newberry and did receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M. Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Newberry Christian Church, 41 Christian Circle, Newberry SC 29108.
Honorary pallbearers were the members of the Newberry Christian Church, Dr. Mark Davis, Dr. Allen Paysinger, and Marshall Sexton
