LUCILLE K. ANTHONY

Lucille Kennedy "Nook" Anthony, 85, widow of Buck Anthony, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Clarendon County on Sept. 24, 1923, a daughter of the late James and Nora Rose Kennedy. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County, where she played basketball. At an early age, she distinguished herself as a Christian and joined Melina Presbyterian Church, where she served faithfully until her health declined. Lucille had a diverse employment history, working at the Holiday Inn, dry cleaners in Baltimore and at a bakery. She also was a farmer.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory: five daughters, Sally Adams (Al) of Philadelphia, Mary Lewis (John), Brendell Moses (Marvin), Brenda James and Julia Kennedy, all of Sumter; a nephew raised as a son, Maxwell Bennett (Beverly) of Washington, D.C.; a brother, Maxwell Kennedy of Sumter; three sisters, Bernice McDonald and Mary McFadden, both of Sumter, and Jerome Shaw (Alphonso) of Philadelphia; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Maple Stokes, and brother-in-law, Ray Anthony, both of Baltimore; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Buck and James Anthony; a daughter, Nora Anthony; two brothers, Warren and James Kennedy; three sisters, Laura, Viola and Queen Kennedy; a granddaughter, Terry Wright; and two grandsons, Willie and Sherman James.

Viewing will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Melina Presbyterian Church, Gable, with the pastor, the Rev. Carnell Hampton, officiating. Interment will follow in Melina cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday for viewing until the hour of service.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Julia Kennedy, 1050 Robinhood Ave., Sumter, SC 29150.

Job's Mortuary Inc., 312 S. Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

JAMES DELAIN

James Delain, 90, husband of Willie Mae Olden Delain, departed this life on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 23, 1918, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Manuel Delain and Elease Bonaparte. James received his early childhood education at St. Michael school in Sumter County and continued his studies by attending school in Detroit. He was united in holy matrimony on May 17, 1948, in Bishopville, to Willie Mae Olden Delain. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served a tour of duty, where he received many awards and recognition. James had many hobbies, which included the love of animals. He was an avid reader of God's word. He was a faithful member of Wayman Chapel AME Church.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories: a sister, Sarah Dickens of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two nephews, John Bonaparte Jr. of Caseyville, Ill., and Steven Dickens of Apex, N.C.; two nieces, Patricia Alaka of Brooklyn, Valerie Murphy of Hopewell Junction, N.Y., and their children; goddaughter, Gloria Jean Brisbane; godson, Ceasar Thompson; in-laws, Larlia Olden and Bessie Olden; a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, John Henry Bonaparte Sr., Charlie Bonaparte and Pete Delain; and a sister, Wilhelmenia Owens.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today from the Wayman Chapel AME Church, 160 N. Kings Highway, (S.C. 261 North), Sumter, with the Rev. Laddie N. Howard, pastor, the Rev. Charlie Howard, eulogist, assisted by Minister Delores Harris.

The family will receive friends at the family home, 5090 Cain Savannah Road, Wedgefield.

The remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.

The funeral procession will leave from the family home at 10:20 a.m.

Floral bearers will be members of the Stewardess Board and the Women's Missionary Society.

Pallbearers will be stewards, trustees and family.

Burial will be in the Wayman Chapel AME Churchyard cemetery, Sumter.

Services directed by the staff and management of Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

JOE LOUIS GIBBONS

Joe Louis Gibbons, 67, departed this earthly life Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter County on Dec. 9, 1941, he was a son of the late William "Jack" Gibbons and Mattie Cousar Gibbons. At an early age, he attended Mount Sinai AME Church, Lynchburg (Shiloh community of Sumter County). Joe was employed by the South Carolina Department of Transportation. He was a gentle soul who possessed a genuine love for auto mechanics and customizing. He was united in holy matrimony to Judy Edwards Gibbons. To this union a son was born, Joseph Gibbons, who preceded him in death.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories: two brothers, George Gibbons of Capital Heights, Md., and Larry Gibbons of Sumter; six sisters, Doris Knight of Philadelphia, Ella (Lee) Burns and Alice (David) Stewart of Sumter, Louise (Thomas) Goodman of Lynchburg, Ardenia Parrett of Norcross, Ga., and Deborah (Leroy) Fields of Mount Holly, N.J.; an aunt, Rosetta Cousar of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter, with Bishop L.H. Burns, pastor of Union UAFW Baptist Church, Kingstree, eulogist.

The family will receive friends at his home, 350 Oklahoma Drive, Sumter.

The procession will leave from his home at 2:30 p.m.

Floral bearers will be nieces.

Pallbearers will be nephews.

Burial will be in Edwards cemetery, Lynchburg (Shiloh community of Sumter County).

Services directed by the staff and management of Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

JO EMILY P. DICKSON

Jo Emily Pack Dickson, 78, beloved wife of the late Joseph Dickson, passed away Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence, following a lengthy illness. Prior to her demise, Mrs. Dickson had been a resident of Lake City-Scranton Healthcare for the past year.

Mrs. Dickson was a daughter of the late Wade and Louise Chewning Pack of Charleston and Greeleyville. Born in Charleston, Mrs. Dickson attended James Simmons Elementary School and M. Rutledge Rivers Middle/High School. She married Mr. Dickson in 1948 and became a lifelong resident of Sumter in 1957, when Mr. Dickson joined the staff of The Item. Mrs. Dickson was a member of Faith Outreach Assembly. She was a longtime employee of Campbell Soup and retired at the plant's closing with 20 years of service. She was an avid reader and crossword puzzle worker. She and Mr. Dickson loved camping and trips to the mountains. They often included their children and grandchildren on their trips.

A loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she leaves to cherish her memory: two daughters, Sara D. Foxworth (Doug) and Demma Truell (Phil), both of Sumter; grandchildren, Shannon F. Gradwell (Chris), Beth C. Ingram (Harold), Michael-Shane Dickson, Leigh Jackson, Ryan Dickson (Stacy), Richard Duce Cason and Trey Truell, all of Sumter; great-grandchildren, Bailey Dickson, Taylor Gradwell, Dominic McIntosh, Shane Dickson, Zachary Gradwell, Liam Dickson, Marlee Black and Mia Ingram, all of Sumter; and a daughter-in-law, Ann D. Avis (Tom), also of Sumter; and an uncle, Ikey Pack (Jeanette) of Manning.

Mrs. Dickson was preceded in death by her son, Shane Dickson; her sister, Laura Louise Pack; and her brother, Wade A. Pack Jr.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today at the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home.

The family will be at the home of Chris and Shannon Gradwell following the service.

A private burial service will be held at a later date.

The family will receive friends, one hour prior to the service, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Bullock Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, Memorial and Tributes, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-521.

LELLA T. SUTTON

Lella Taylor Sutton, 94, widow of Thomas H. Sutton, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, at her home.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter.

AGNES S. LYLES

Agnes Claire Stokes Lyles, 103, widow of Clifford Leroy Lyles, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, at a local nursing center.

Services will be announced by Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St., Sumter, (803) 775-9386.

CHARLOTTE JEFFERSON

Charlotte Jefferson, daughter of the late Edmond and Kitty Hart Jefferson, was born June 13, 1919, in Lee County. She entered eternal rest on Dec. 19, 2008, at her residence.

Ms. Jefferson was preceded in death by two brothers, a sister, and three grandchildren.

She is survived by three daughters, five sons, a sister, a brother-in-law, 24 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren, and many other relatives.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Living Church in the Lord Jesus Christ, McBee, with Bishop B.L. James officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Zion United Methodist Church old cemetery, Bishopville.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 3987 Stephen Road, Bethune.

Wilson's Funeral Home, 403 S. Main St., Bishopville, is in charge of arrangements.

MARY L. COLES

Mary L. Getter Coles, 71, wife of Berry Coles, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008, at Lexington Medical Center, Lexington.

She was born in Sumter County, a daughter of the late Walter and Essie Jones Getter.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 7108 Bluff Road, Hopkins, SC 29061 and the home of her sister, Essie M. Getter McCants, 319 W. Oakland, Sumter, SC 29150.

Funeral plans are incomplete and will be announced by Job's Mortuary Inc. of Sumter.

GERALD S. GIPSON

Gerald Rena Sanders Gipson, 48, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, at Ascension Hospice House, Irmo.

Born in Sumter County on Nov. 7, 1960, she was a daughter of Dorothy Robinson Sanders and the late Albert Sanders.

The family will receive friends at the home, 6065 Camden Highway, Rembert.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

LYNN B. MIMS

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Lynn Barker Mims, of Tucson, wife of retired U.S. Navy Capt. Norman W. Mims Jr., passed away Dec. 20, 2008, at the Northwest Medical Center, Tucson, after a 2 ½ year battle with leukemia.

Lynn was born in Charleston on Jan. 19, 1939, and was a daughter of the late George William Barker and Mildred Doscher Barker. She graduated from the College of Charleston in 1961, where she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. On April 29, 1961, she married U.S. Navy Ensign Norman Wells Mims Jr. and began a career as Navy wife that continued for the next 29 years at many duty stations.

She is survived by her husband, Norman; son, retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Norman "Buzz" W. Mims III and daughter-in-law, Celeste M.D. Mims, of Tucson; daughter, Melissa M. Phillips and son-in-law, retired U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. John R. Phillips, of Oro Valley, Ariz.; son, U.S. Navy AM1 (AW) Williams B. Mims and daughter-in-law, Sondra A.M. Mims, of NATTU Oceana, Va., and Weatherford, Texas; and eight grandchildren, Danielle, Christopher and Joshua Mims, Heather, Michael and Allison Phillips, and Austin and Anya-Selene Mims.

Lynn was a member of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church (7570 N. Thornydale Road, Tucson, AZ 85741); the Navy League of the U.S.; College of Charleston Alumni Association; JOY Circle of WELCA at Beautiful Savior; and the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association Recreational Vehicle Chapter.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 3, 2009, at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church.

In lieu of flowers, Lynn requested donations to Beautiful Savior; the American Cancer Society (your local unit or the Great Western Division Inc., Pima Unit, P.O. Box 2970, Phoeniz, AZ 85062-2970); or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, P.O. Box 4261, Pittsfield, MA 01202.

Adair Funeral Homes, Avalon Chapel, of Tucson is in charge of arrangements.

JAMES C. McCASKILL Sr.

Retired U.S. Navy Sr. Chief Petty Officer James Cooke McCaskill Sr., 85, married first to the late Sally Ruth McCaskill for 38 years and, after her death, later married to the late Shirley L. McCaskill for 20 years, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, at Sumter Health and Rehab.

Mr. McCaskill was born in Lee County, a son of the late Finley Cooke and Lydia Brown McCaskill. He retired as a senior chief petty officer with the U.S. Navy after 23 years of service, serving during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He later worked as a finance and credit manager for Phoenix Furniture Co. and as financial personnel for Evergreen and Hillside Memorial Park cemeteries.

Survivors are a son, James C. McCaskill Jr. of Columbia; three daughters, Sandy Mims and her husband, David, of Chapin, Marlene Baldwin and her husband, Billy, of Myrtle Beach and Tammy Scott and her husband, Mel, of Sumter; a brother, Lyde McCaskill and his wife, Bert, of Sumter; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Evelyn Duvall and Susie Maye.

A memorial service with full military honors will be held at noon Wednesday at the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with Ken Ford officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Bullock Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, Gamecock Chapter No. 5, P.O. Box 931, Sumter, SC 29154.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter for the arrangements.
