BRENDA G. HERRINGTON

Brenda Garrington Herrington, 61, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at a local nursing center.

Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Ronald and Roberta Brunson Garrington. Mrs. Herrington was a retired cosmetologist.

Surviving are a son, DuVon Herrington of Wedgefield; a daughter, Lisa Prescott and husband, Tim, of Sumter; a sister, Judy Shorter of Sumter; and two grandchildren, Laken Austin and Kelsie Austin.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Victor VanRas officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of her sister, 2480 Beulah Cuttino Road.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

GEARLD S. GIPSON

Gearld Renee Sanders Gipson, 48, was called home to eternal rest Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, at Ascension Hospice Hospita in Irmo.

Born Nov. 7, 1960. in Kings County, N.Y., she was the youngest of four children and daughter of Dorothy Robinson Sanders and the late Albert Sanders.

She attended the public schools of New York City. In 1990, she and her family moved to Athens, Ga. "Renee, " as she was more widely known, was a family-oriented, loving, caring, strong and independent woman. As years passed, Renee eventually became a single mother and raised her four children into their adult years. She moved to Sumter in 2006, her home away from home, and continued to devote her life to her four children and family. "Bay Bay, " an affectionate name given to her by her oldest sister when they were younger, was also known for her bubbly personality.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories: two daughters, LaQuesta and Shanniyyah Gipson; two sons, Trevor and Tyrone Jr.; one sister, Cynthia Ellis; two brothers, Larry Sanders and Tyrone Sanders; four grandchildren, Asia Barnett, Taliah Anderson, Syia Gipson and Katlien Gipson; five nieces; four nephews; six great-nieces; two great-nephews; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Albert Sanders.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at The John Wesley William Sr. Memorial Chapel, Williams Funeral Home, Inc., 821 North Main Street, Sumter, with the Rev. J. Elbert Williams, officiating, eulogist, and the Rev. Darren P. Dixon, presiding.

The family will receive friends at her home, 6065 Camden Highway, Rembert.

The procession will leave from her home at 12:30 p.m.

Floral bearers and pall bears will be friends of the family.

Burial will be in the Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church Yard cemetery, Rembert.

Services directed by the staff and management of Williams Funeral Home Inc., Sumter.

HATTIE B. McFADDEN

Hattie Brayboy McFadden, 63, widow of Sammie McFadden died Dec. 22, 2008, at Cape Fear Health System, Fayetteville, N.C.

Born August 9, 1945, in New Zion, she was a daughter of the late Melvin Brayboy Sr. and Rensie Davis Brayboy.

She received her formal education at Walker-Gamble School in New Zion.

In her youth she accepted Christ as her Savior and joined Hickory Grove Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors are: one son, Minister Gerald (Kelly) Brayboy of Fayetteville; five daughters, Delphine Brayboy, Sandra (Kenny) McFadden, Angela (Lamont), Karen and Natasha McFadden, all of Sumter; eight sisters, Shirley Lancaster, Rensie Walker, Evangelist Mary Adams, Laura (George) Frierson, Minnie Pearl (Phillip) Mallette, Evangelist Rhonda (Wallace) Keels, Gracie (Emanuel) Mack, Mary(Smiley) Dickey; three brothers, Charles (Julie) Brayboy, Terry Davis, Harry (Dororthy) Brayboy; two nephews reared as brothers, Robert L. and Jackie L. Brayboy; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Remains will be placed in the school at 10 a.m. on Saturday Dec. 27. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday Dec. 27 at Walker Gamble Elementary School, Pope Street, Turbeville.

Elder Ronnie McFadden, pastor officiating, the Rev.Clarence E. Patterson, Eulogist. Burial will be at Hickory Grove Freewill Baptist Church

Family is receiving friends at the home, 825 Nevada Court, Sumter.

These services are entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

CHARLES L. CONYERS

Charles Leroy Conyers, 69, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Born Oct. 10, 1939, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Leroy McKenzie Conyers and the late Julia Watts Conyers Gamble Warren. He was retired from the U.S. Navy after 23 years of service as an aviation electrician and was a member of New Start Community Church of the Nazarene.

Surviving are a daughter, Judy C. Cales, and her husband Randy of Jackson, Ga.; a son, Charles L. Conyers Jr., of Columbia; two brothers, Gene Conyers, of Alcolu, and Tom Conyers of Sumter; three grandchildren, April Holladay, Lisa Conyers and Georgia Conyers.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Julia Conyers, and a brother, Jim Conyers.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Dale Turner officiating. Burial will follow in Trinity United Methodist Church cemetery in Alcolu.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

Memorials may be made to New Start Community Church of the Nazarene, 4686 J. W. Rhames Church Road, Manning, SC 29102.

MILDRED ELLIS

Mildred Ellis, 81, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at an Orangeburg nursing center.

Services will be announced by the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory, 221 Broad St., Sumter, (803) 775-9386.

MARY FRANCES HUGHES

Mary Frances Hughes, 88, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008, at her residence in Lynchburg.

She was born in Lynchburg, a daughter of the late Frank and Mary Player Dickey.

Mrs. Hughes was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age, she joined Asbury United Methodist Church in Lynchburg. Relocating to Baltimore, she joined Mount Moriah Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities for more than 25 years. Mrs. Hughes was first married to the late Joseph B. Eaddy and to this union one child was born. She was later married to the late Robert R. Hughes. She was employed with the McDonnough School, Owings Mill, Md., for more than 25 years as supervisor of the dining room. She later worked for Noxell Corp., retiring after many years of service. Retiring, she returned to Lynchburg with her husband and reunited herself with the Asbury United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the gospel choir and the United Methodist Women.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter, Deloris Eaddy Tapp of Sumter; two grandchildren, Fernando A. Tapp of Baltimore and Shutondia K. Tapp of Glendale, Calif.; two great-grandchildren, Brandon and Jordan Tapp of Baltimore; a godson, Freddie McKnight of West Haven, Conn.; and a host of nieces, nephews, special friends, neighbors, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by one adopted son, Bernard Hughes; two brothers, Henry and John Dickey; and one sister, Lizzle Gamble.

Viewing will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary, 312 S. Main St., Sumter.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Asbury United Methodist Church, Lynchburg, with the Rev. Samuel Cooper Jr. officiating and the Rev. Eliza Black presiding.

The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Saturday for viewing until the hour of service.

The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Deloris Tapp, 205 Wildwood Drive, Sumter, SC 29154.

Job's Mortuary, 312 S. Main St., Sumter, is in charge of arrangements.

RICHARD R. RAWLINS

MANNING – Richard Ray Rawlins, 52, husband of Gail Setzler Rawlins, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, at his home.

Born Feb. 24, 1956, in Fort Valley, Ga., he was a son of the late Nicholson Ruth and Marion Virginia Smith Rawlins. He was a musician and a carpenter.

Surviving are his wife; blended family, Danielle Slesh, Jennifer Rawlins, Richard Rawlins, Todd Herlong, Baker Herlong and Pam Timmons; six sisters, Debra Blackmon, Sandra Stroup, Mary Salazar, Kathy McDaniel, Barbara Jackson and Belindia Nawrocki; a brother, Anthony M. Rawlins; and nine grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home, 304 N. Church St., Manning.

EUNICE J. EPPERSON

MANNING – Eunice Jackson Epperson, 88, widow of Joseph Norwood "Buck" Epperson, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, at NHC Healthcare of Sumter.

Born May 14, 1920, in the Cane-Savannah area of Sumter County, she was the daughter of the late Moultrie R. and Anna Singleton Jackson. She was a retired teacher's aide for Clarendon County Schools, a former nurse's aide at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, and a lifetime member of Manning First Baptist Church, where she was former treasurer of the Sunshine Pals Sunday School Class. She was a loving mother, and helped to raise her brothers, who lovingly called her "sister."

Surviving are a daughter, Anna Epperson Bilton, and her husband Kenny of Manning; four sons, Michael Norwood Epperson, and his wife Doris of Bishopville, Dr. H. Wayne Epperson, and his wife Patsy of Manning, Francis Scott Epperson of Summerton, and Dr. William Jackson Epperson of Murrells Inlet; three brothers, Ralph S. Jackson and his wife Olivia of Gable, Scott H. Jackson, and his wife Rosanne, and Carl F. Jackson, and his wife Margaret, of Manning; nine grandchildren, Michelle E. (Rich) Gomez, of Charleston, Michael N. (Michie) Epperson Jr. of Florence, David (Bridgett) Epperson of Manning, Mary Epperson (Billy) Blevins of Columbia, Emily Epperson (Ryan) Way of Manning, Joey Epperson of Murrells Inlet, Katie Epperson of Murrells Inlet, Shawn Bilton of Sumter and Shannon Shawver of Columbia; four great grandchildren, Amber Timmons of Charleston, Harper David Epperson of Manning, Maggie Ellen Epperson of Manning and William Lawson Blevins of Columbia.

She was preceded in death by six brothers, Moultrie R. "M. R." Jackson, Thomas "Jehu" Jackson, William J. "Billy" Jackson, W. S. "Jimmy" Jackson, Dr. Robert E. Jackson and Rudolph E. Jackson; and a sister, Edna Jackson Hinson.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at Manning First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bill Selman and the Rev. Jerry Cottone officiating. Burial will follow in Manning cemetery. Pallbearers are David Epperson, Michael N. Epperson Jr., Joey Epperson, Shawn Bilton, Ryan Way, Billy Blevins and Rich Gomez.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning and would like to thank NHC Healthcare of Sumter for their many kindnesses.

COMILLA DINKINS

Ms. Comilla Dinkins, 79, of 5540 Dais Road, Rembert, passed on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on today at Haile's Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will take place at Good Hope United Methodist Church cemetery.

JOSEPHINE W. HUDSON

Josephine Damon Wilson Hudson, 84, widow of Nathaniel Hudson, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Lee County on Nov. 28, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Felix Damon Sr. and Winnie Commander Damon.

The family will receive friends at the home 100 Erskine Court, Sumter.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc.

JAMES JOHNSON

James "Bud" Johnson died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Clarendon County, a son of the late Edmond Johnson and the late Edith Johnson.

Arrangements will be announced later by Sumter Funeral Service Inc.
