White, Mamie Lee

MANNING – Mamie Lee Grady White, 78, widow of Reuben White, Sr., died Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at Tuomey Healthcare System in Sumter.

Born September 14, 1930, in Timmonsville, she was the daughter of Willie E. and Geneva Freeman Grady. She was retired from Santee Print, and was a member of Southside Baptist Church in Sumter.

Surviving are a son, Reuben “Curly” White and his wife Carolyn of Manning; a sister, Grace White and her husband Scott of Scranton; a grandson, Tripp White and his wife Mandi of Manning; two great grandchildren, Carmen White and Alice Mamie White.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Annie Mae Knotts.

A private family graveside service was held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 29, 2009, in Sumter cemetery, with the Rev. William Nichols officiating.

Lawrence Edward Braxton - February 16, 2010

ALCOLU – Lawrence Edward Braxton, 72, husband of Nadine Marie Lane Braxton died Tuesday, February 16, 2010, at Tuomey Hospital in Sumter.

Born May 9, 1937, in Alcolu, he was the son of the late John Patrick and Loutisha Rogers Braxton. He was a United States Army veteran, a retired supervisor at the Clarendon County landfill, and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of Manning, are a son, Lawrence Wayne Braxton and his wife Paula of Sumter; a stepdaughter, Peggy Barton of Holly Hill; a stepson, Tom Judy Jr. and his wife Suzi of Manning; a granddaughter, Cheryl Ann Braxton of Sumter; three step grandchildren, Heather Judy and Deanna Judy of Manning, and Julie Marissa Gostic and husband Michael of Livermore, CA; three brothers, Jack Braxton and Bobby Braxton of Alcolu, and Charles Braxton of Sumter; and a sister, Annette Griffin of Sumter.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Alfred Willis officiating. Honorary pallbearers were Ed Dyson, Donnie Dixon, Ray Brown, Gene Conyers, Tim Hilliard, Louis Hilton, Jake Ross and Bunny Clark.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Greenville-Spartanburg NC-SC Office, 16-A Brozzini Court, Greenville, SC 29615, or to the American Heart Association, SC Office, 520 Gervais St., Ste. 300, Columbia, SC 29201

Bobby Jordan Bryant, Sr. - January 29th, 2010

MANNING – Bobby Jordan Bryant Sr., 73, passed away on Friday, January 29, 2010, at Tuomey Hospital in Sumter.

Born September 3, 1936, in Manning, he was the son of the late Sphinks Thomas Bryant Sr. and the late Pearl Hodge Bryant. He was retired from Campbell’s Soup, and was of the Baptist faith. He dearly loved his family, church and friends.

Surviving are three daughters, Minnie Gardner and her husband Robert of Sumter, Rebecca Bryant and Crystal Bryant of Manning; four sons, Bobby J. Bryant Jr. and his wife Elizabeth of Jackson, SC, Joseph Bryant of Beaufort, GA, William G. Bryant of Manning and Steven Scurry of Sumter; a sister, Rosa Bryant Southerly and her husband Ted of Summerton; four brothers, Joe H. Bryant and his wife Ann of Sumter, Sphinks T. Bryant Jr. of Manning, Gerald F. Bryant of Manning, and William D. Bryant and his wife Linda of Florida; seven grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 1, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Gene Mosier officiating.

Memorials may be made to Connie Maxwell Children’s Home, 810 Maxwell Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29646-1934.

Hubert Edward Bryant, Sr. - February 13th, 2010

MANNING – Hubert Edward Bryant Sr., 77, husband of Rosa Hodge Bryant, departed this life and went to be with his heavenly Father on Saturday, February 13, 2010.

Born March 16, 1932, in Manning, he was the son of the late James Homer and Mary Dyson Bryant. He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War, a retired electrician, and a member of Home Branch Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of 53 years of Manning, are two daughters, Brenda Waters and her husband Bill of Sumter, and Rose Lynn Pace and her husband Larry of Palmetto, FL; two sons, James Bryant and Kenneth Bryant and his wife Hope of Manning; two sisters, Gladys Hodge of Manning and Elizabeth Ridgeway of Sumter; a brother, Dewey R. Bryant and his wife Sara of Sumter; five grandchildren, Shane Green of Sumter, Douglas Pace of Palmetto, FL, Sigmon Bryant and Katherine Bryant of Manning, and Crystal Pace Johnson and her husband Scotty of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by a son, Hubert Edward “Hubie” Bryant Jr.; and four brothers, Wilbur, James, Miles and Lavern Bryant.

Funeral services were held at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday at Home Branch Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robert Hayne officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were nephews, Jay Hodge, Ray Ridgeway, Lee Bryant, Sam Browder III, Jake Hodge and Roy Bryant. Honorary pallbearers were Deacons and Men’s Sunday School Class of Home Branch Baptist Church, and Wil Geddings, Steve Browder, Rob Hankins, Thomas Brewer, and Danny Brewer.

Memorials may be made to Home Branch Baptist Church Youth Program, 1667 Stone Road, Manning, SC 29102.

Thomas A. Bryant - January 21st, 2010

DARLINGTON – Thomas Asbury Bryant, 62, passed away on Thursday, January 21, 2010, at McLeod Hospital in Florence.

Born September 22, 1947, in Manning, he was the son of the late Thomas H. “Kent” Bryant, and the late Iva Nell DuBose Bryant Hodge. He was formerly employed by Santee Print Works, and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are a brother, Dwight E. Bryant of Highlands, NC; four sisters, Virginia Bryant of Neeses, Mae Pack of Sumter, Johnnie Geddings (Tony) of Sumter, and Harriet Locklair (William) of Alcolu; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 23, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Dwight E. Bryant officiating. Burial was in Home Branch Baptist Church cemetery. Pallbearers were William Locklair, Lee Bryant, Jimmy Morris, Benjamin Spurling, Marty McKittrick, and Jay Hodge.

Memorials may be made to Bethea Baptist Retirement Center, 157 Home Avenue, Darlington, SC 29532-7625.

Sue Clark - February 10th, 2010

MANNING - Sue Carol Darling Clark, age 65, died on February 10th after a remarkable struggle against pulmonary disease.

Sue was born in Gary, Indiana to George and Mable Darling, both of whom passed when she was young. Sue worked to pay her way through college and was the first in her family lineage to earn a degree. She taught in Indiana for 15 years before moving to South Carolina where she earned her Masters Degree in Education from USC. Sue taught elementary school in Clarendon County for 21 years before her health forced her to retire.

Survivors include three sisters and a brother, her daughter JamieSue Clark, of New York City, NY; her daughter-in-law Cherie McDonald, of Sumter, South Carolina; and four grand-children. Sue was preceded in death by her husband, Jim. The family would like to express deep gratitude to Sue's caregivers Deborah Metzger and Phyllis Owens whose love, humor, and companionship enriched Sue's last years.

Sue was dedicated to the enrichment of each of her students and she loved teaching. She received many teaching awards throughout her tenure, but was especially proud of the "Mary McLeod Bethune Recognition Award" where 390 of her past and present students voted her as the teacher with the most effect on their lives. Because education was Sue's passion, a scholarship fund for students interested in teaching is being created in Sue's name at the University of South Carolina, Columbia campus. Margaret Gainey Coker - February 4th, 2010

SUMTER – Margaret E. "Pete" Gainey Coker, 83, widow of Dewey Burdell Coker, passed away on Thursday, February 4, 2010, at NHC Healthcare of Sumter.

Born October 20, 1926, in Dillon, she was the daughter of the late Kammie George and Elizabeth Hayes Gainey. She was a retired seamstress, and was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.

Surviving are four daughters, Sandra Elizabeth Rogers, Patricia Coker Hudson Rodgers and her husband Ray, and Brenda Ellen Coker of Sumter, Karen Cecil Snider and her husband Scott of Byron, GA; three sons, Dewey Burdell Coker Jr. of Sumter, Michael Coker and his wife Sheryl of Summerton, and Sheldon Gainey “Don” Coker and his wife Annie of Sumter; twenty-eight grandchildren; thirty-six great grandchildren and nine great, great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, James Gresham Coker; and a daughter, Camela Darlene Coker.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 7, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. Burial was in Trinity United Methodist Church cemetery in Alcolu. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Janice Lynn Barnhart Cortez - February 17th, 2010

MANNING – Janice Lynn Barnhart Cortez, 60, died Wednesday, February 17, 2010, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

She is survived by a son, Robert Shadd Jr. of Manning; a daughter, Candace Kupcheck Walker of Pennsylvania; four grandchildren; two sisters, Donna Ridgeway of Manning, and Kim Weatherford of Darlington; a brother, Douglas Barnhart Jr. of Pittsburgh, PA.

Funeral services were private.

Ruth E. Daugherty - February 24th, 2010

SUMMERTON – Ruth E. Wing Miller Daugherty, 70, wife of C. M. “Chuck” Daugherty, died Wednesday, February 24, 2010, at McLeod Hospice House in Florence.

Born June 9, 1939, in Schenectady, NY, she was the daughter of the late Warren and Alice Barnard Wing.

Surviving, in addition to her husband of Summerton, are a daughter, Carla Woodruff of Summerville; a son, Steven Miller of Summerville; a stepson, Jay Charles Daugherty of Elloree; three sisters, Alice Bayer of San Dimas, CA, Jeanette Crumine of Moreno Valley, CA, and Paula Sally of Azusa, CA; two brothers, Warren Wing of Salem, VA, and Paul Wing of Summerton; two grandchildren, Stephanie Miller and Lydia Evans of Summerville; and two step grandchildren, Jessica Marie Daugherty, and Meagan Connor Daugherty, of Elloree.

Memorials may be made to McLeod Hospice, 1203 East Cheves Street, Florence, SC 29506-2711.

Hattie Billups Dean - February 23rd, 2010

MANNING – Hattie Billups Dean, 98, widow of William Harper Dean Jr., died Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at Tuomey Hospital in Sumter.

Born August 5, 1911, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Herbert Brown Billups and the late Lou Richburg Billups. She was a retired secretary-bookkeeper, a member of Summerton United Methodist Church and the Willie Dingle Bible Class, and a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include a son, William Glenn Dean and his wife Merline of Stratford, TX; and three grandchildren.

A graveside service was held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 26, 2010, in the St. Paul cemetery in Summerton, with the Rev. Randy Bowers officiating.

Francis Scott Epperson - February 11th, 2010

MANNING – Francis Scott “Scotty” Epperson, 53, died Thursday, February 11, 2010, at Lake Marion Nursing Home in Summerton.

Born December 5, 1956, in Sumter, he was the son of the late Joseph Norwood “Buck” and Eunice Jackson Epperson. He was Salutatorian of the 1975 senior class of Manning High School, attended the University of South Carolina, was a member of The Presbyterian Church at Manning, a substitute teacher, and a volunteer at Manning First Baptist Church Friendship House.

Surviving are his three brothers, Michael Norwood Epperson and wife Doris of Bishopville, Hugh Wayne Epperson and wife Patsy of Manning, and Dr. William Jackson Epperson of Murrells Inlet; a sister Mary Anna Epperson Bilton and her husband Kenny of Manning; nine nieces and nephews; and five great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 14, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating. Burial was in Manning cemetery. Nephews, Michael N. Epperson Jr., Rich Gomez, David W. Epperson, Ryan Way, Billy Blevins, Shawn Bilton, and Joey Epperson, served as pallbearers.

Margaret Ann Metz Felske - February 9th, 2010

MANNING – Margaret Ann Metz Felske, 78, wife of Richard Cabot Felske, passed away at her home on Tuesday, February 9, 2010.

Born September 28, 1931, in Mt. Kisco, NY, she was the daughter of the late Phillip William and Zolabelle Osterdock Metz. She was a certified registered nurse anesthetist, licensed in three states, Texas, Florida and Michigan. She was former Chief of Staff of the Anesthetist Department of Heritage Hospital in Taylor, Michigan. She was a member of Santee Baptist Church. She lived at Wyboo Plantation, and was a member of Wyboo and Player’s Golf Course.

Surviving are her husband of Manning; a daughter, Laura Jean Clark and husband Gregg of Midland, Michigan; son-in-law, Dick Wenzel of Belleville, Michigan; daughter-in-law, Lisa Felske of Humble, Texas; and six grandchildren, Kara Wenzel, Katy Wenzel, Catherine Clark, Alan Clark, Olivia Clark, and Emma Felske.

She was predeceased on April 8, 2005 by her daughter, Patricia Ann Wenzel; and on February 10, 2006, by her son, Dr. Daniel D. Felske.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 15, 2010, in Santee Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jimmy Eldreth officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Santee Baptist Church, c/o Jimmy Eldreth, 1057 Davis Street, Manning, SC 29102.

Addie Brogdon Gamble - February 5th, 2010

MANNING – Addie Brogdon Gamble, 90, widow of Robert Eugene Gamble, died Friday, Feburary 5, 2010, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born October 14, 1919, in the Brogdon Community of Sumter, she was the daughter of the late Allard Memminger and Susan Ida Stukes Brogdon. She was a member of Manning United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Carol G. Ingram and her husband Buck of Sumter; two sons, Robert E. Gamble, Jr. of Pawleys Island, Lynn Brogdon Gamble and his wife Lila of Wedgefield; a brother, Randolph Brogdon and his wife Frances of Myrtle Beach; nine grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Debra Quilling Smith and the Rev. Phil Ross officiating. Burial was in Manning cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons, Chuck Ingram, Chris Ingram, Craig Ingram, Rob Gamble, Michael Gamble and Brian Gamble.

Donald George Haberman - February 24th, 2010

MANNING, SC – Donald George Haberman, 80, husband of Donna Lee Lawson Haberman, passed away on Wednesday, February 24, 2010, in Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton, SC.

Born February 25, 1929, in Dunstable, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Carl and Lena Parkhurst Haberman. He was a United States Army Air Corps veteran, and was of the Methodist faith. He retired to Manning, SC, after owning and operating his painting contracting business, Don Haberman & Son, for over forty years, which his son still operates.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of Manning, are three daughters, Donalene Groom and her husband Thomas of Westford, MA, Candice Gardner of S. Berwick, ME, and Kristin Knowlton and her husband Steve of Ipswich, MA; a son, Donald George Haberman Jr. of Groton, MA; three brothers, Carl Haberman of Hudson, NH, Robert Haberman of Tilton, NH, and Warren Haberman of Raymond, NH; a sister, Carlene Buote of Dracut, MA; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Ed Haberman; and a sister, Beverly Haberman.

A memorial service was held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 24, 2010, at Westford Methodist Church, Westford, MA. Morse-Bayliss Funeral Home, 122 Princeton Blvd., Lowell, MA, was in charge of the memorial service in Massachusetts
