SUMMERTON – Archie Thomas “Tom” Kinard, 45, died Friday, June 11, 2010, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia.

Born March 10, 1965, in Columbia, he was the son of Barbara Outlaw Holder and the late Herbert Woodrow Kinard Jr. He was employed with Custom Installers, and was of the Baptist faith. Tom was an avid outdoorsman.

Surviving in addition to his mother of Chester, VA, are significant other, Christina Catherine Frederickson of Gilbert; one son, Alan Thomas Kinard of Orangeburg; two sisters, Barbara Katherine Kinard of Summerton and Mary Carolla of Manassas, VA; two brothers, Herbert Woodrow Kinard III of Summerton, and James Edward Kinard of Stafford, VA; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 6:00 p.m. Monday, June 14, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Larry Kennedy officiating.

Eleanor Jane Loar Shirkey - June 8th, 2010

MANNING – Eleanor Jane Loar Shirkey, 72, wife of Norman William “Norm” Shirkey, died Tuesday, June 8, 2010, in Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.

Born March 24, 1938, in Steubenville, OH, she was the daughter of the late Columbus Bradford and Mildred Jane Brown Loar. She was a member of First Assembly of God.

Surviving in addition to her husband of Manning are a daughter, Drenda Gibson (Del) of Manning; a brother, Robert Loar of Steubenville, OH; two sisters, Ruth Loar Paluch of Steubenville, OH, and Kathie Loar Halsted of Naples, FL; two grandchildren, Janey Ray Gibson and Christine Kay Gibson, both of Manning.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Clark Loar.

A memorial service was held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 10, 2010, at First Assembly of God, 3574 Hwy. 260, Manning, with the Rev. Sam Neal officiating.

Emma Marshall Boyce - June 7th, 2010

MANNING – Emma Marshall “Aunt Pete” Boyce, 82, wife of Hazel Ethredge Boyce, died Monday, June 7, 2010, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

Born March 12, 1928, in St. Stephen, she was the daughter of the late William Bryant and Audrey Mae Winter Marshall. She was owner and director of Wee Care Nursery in Manning since 1969, and was a member of Manning Second Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband of Manning are three daughters, Linda Griffin of Florence, Nancy Elliott of Manning, and Ann Hutto of Orangeburg; a son, Bryant Boyce of Manning; a sister, Frances Rodgers of Sumter; eight grandchildren, Tripp Griffin, Rob Elliott (Dixie), Greg Elliott, Dr. Suzann Weathers (Robbie), Ashley Wolfe (Brandon), David Hutto Jr., Ansley Boyce, and Blake Boyce; and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in Manning First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Pec Chatham officiating. Burial was in Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning. Pallbearers were Ben Osborne, Nate Lyles, Kevin Ross, Landon Morris, Eddie Keels, Bill Boyce, and Larry Rodgers.

William Darry Thigpen - June 7th, 2010

MANNING – William Darry Thigpen, 59, widower of Sondra Kaye Baxley Thigpen, formerly of New Zion, died Monday, June 7, 2010, at his residence.

Born December 27, 1950, in Cades, SC, he was the son of the late John Hugh and Azalee Bennett Thigpen. He was a truckdriver, and was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.

Surviving are a daughter, Tamara Bryant and husband Craig of New Zion; a son, William D. Thigpen Jr. and his wife Rhonda of Turbeville; a brother, Johnny Thigpen and his wife Jo of Cades; a sister, Phyllis Coward and her husband Dale of Scranton; four grandchildren, William D. Thigpen III, Whitney Thigpen, Thomas Bryant, and Tanner Bryant.

A graveside service was held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday in New Hope Christian Church cemetery, with the Rev. Tim Nail officiating. Pallbearers were Roy Welch, Mike Anderson, Wayne McKenzie, Doug Evans, Hal Edwards, and Kyle Edwards.

Lola Clyde Knowles - June 6th, 2010

MANNING - Lola Clyde Swanson Moody Knowles, 93, widow of John P. Knowles, died Sunday, June 6, 2010, at Tuomey Healthcare System in Sumter.

Born January 25, 1917, in LaGrange, GA, she was the daughter of the late Leon and Mary Wright Swanson. First married to James Carlton Moody, she was retired owner and operator of the Manning Restaurant. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Pine Mt., GA.

Surviving are three sons, Jimmy Moody (Mary), Jerry Moody (Kathy), and Stuart Moody and Robin Locklear, all of Manning; two daughters, Mary Kozy (John)and Charlotte Broadway (Ernie) of Manning; a brother, Ed Swanson of LaGrange, GA; nineteen grandchildren; and twenty-three great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Stacy Carl Moody.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Dale Turner officiating. A graveside service was held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 10, 2010, in Warm Springs cemetery, Warm Springs, GA.

Memorials may be made to the Free Will Baptist Home for Children, P. O. Box 229, Turbeville, SC 29162.

Harriet Claxton Hoyt Jones - June 6th, 2010

SUMTER, SC - Harriet Claxton Hoyt Jones, 104, widow of Joseph E. Jones, died Sunday, June 6, 2010, at Covenant Place in Sumter. She was first married to the late Dr. W. Fenn Hoyt.

Born December 10, 1905, in Torrington, Connecticut, she was the daughter of the late John Malcolm and Harriet Wilkinson Claxton; and was a graduate of Torrington High School, The Hillside School, and Wellesley College. She has previously resided in the Boston area, Longmeadow, MA; Okmulgee, OK; Harwichport, MA; Dunedin, FL; Columbia, SC; and Toledo, Ohio; prior to moving to Sumter, SC.

She was a member of the choir at the First Church of Christ Longmeadow for several years and was a member of the church for over 75 years. She was a founder and President of the Springfield Hospital (now Bay State West) Auxiliary; President of the Springfield Wellesley Club, Vice President of the Springfield Women's Club; member of Longmeadow Women's Club; and was active in the American Red Cross and Meals on Wheels.

Survivors include a son, John Claxton "Jack" Hoyt and his wife Maryalice of Manning, SC; three grandchildren, Judith Furse (William C.) of Manning, Happy Heavenly Oasis of Prescott, AZ, and Robert Fenn Hoyt of Manning, SC; two great grandsons, William C. Furse Jr. and John Louden Furse of Manning; a niece, Diane Derow and nephew, David Derow of the Boston area; and a nephew, Norris Hoyt Jr. of Norwich, VT.

She was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Derow of Arlington, Massachusetts.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Church of Christ, Longmeadow, MA 01106 or Toledo Salvation Army, 620 N. Erie Street, Toledo, OH 43624 or The Presbyterian Church at Manning, P. O. Box 207, Manning, SC 29102 or to Wellesley College, Wellesley, MA 02481.

A memorial service was held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating. A graveside service will be held at a later date at the Longmeadow cemetery, Longmeadow, Massachusetts.

Glenn Wayne Shorter - June 3rd, 2010

SUMMERTON – Glenn Wayne "Dick" Shorter, 68, died Thursday, June 3, 2010, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born January 22, 1942, in Davis Station, he was the son of the late John E. Shorter Sr. and the late Martha Lowder Shorter. He was a retired sign painter, a United State Army veteran, and an associate of Shorter Auto Sales in Sumter until his retirement.

Surviving are a brother, J. E. Shorter Jr. of Sumter; a sister, Evangeline S. Oldham of St. Augustine, FL; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, June 5, 2010, in Bethlehem United Methodist Church cemetery in Davis Station, with the Rev. Morris Smith and the Rev. Charles Shorter officiating.

Special thanks to the nursing staff on 3 North and the ICU nurses at Clarendon Memorial Hospital for the attention given to the family.

Kathryn Jenelle Register Fleming, 82, died Thursday, June 3, 2010, in The Methodist Oaks in Orangeburg.

Born on August 17, 1927, in Houston County, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Akas and Maggie Mulkey Register. She was a retired nurse, and was of the Southern Baptist faith.

John Thomas Billham - June 3rd, 2010

SUMMERTON – Ret. TSGT John Thomas Billham, 79, husband of Brenda Pauline Pallett Billham, died Thursday, June 3, 2010, at his home in Summerton.

Born April 3, 1931, in Steubenville, OH, he was the son of the late Jack and Mamie Moran Billham. He was a Ret. TSGT United States Air Force Avionics Specialist; a retired machinist for Cummings Diesel in Charleston; and a member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church in Charleston.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of Summerton, are a daughter, Lorraine Greene of Moncks Corner; two sons, Darrell J. Billham and his wife Libby of Summerville, and Lee W. Billham and his wife Melissa of Goose Creek; a brother, Ralph Billham of Steubenville, OH; six grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. Burial was at 2:30 p.m. Monday in the Carolina Memorial Park, N. Charleston.

Fannie Louise DuBose - June 1st, 2010

GABLE - Fannie Louise Wilson DuBose of Gable, South Carolina died on June 1st, 2010 at the home of her daughter in Charlotte, NC. She would have been 93 years old on June 29, 2010. A native of Blythewood, SC, she was the daughter of Charles Dagnal Wilson and Katherine McLean Wilson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Elsivan (F.E.) DuBose, Jr., of Gable.

Mrs. DuBose was a graduate of Blythewood High School and Winthrop College and was an elementary teacher with the Salem-Black River and Clarendon District 3 school systems in Clarendon County. She was an active member of the Sardinia Presbyterian Church in Sardinia, SC for more than 70 years and served as the church’s historian until 2009, as well as being a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher. She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting and needlepoint. Her greatest pleasure, however, came from the enjoyment of being with her beloved family and friends and from her deeply held faith, which she lived each day by her words, thoughts and actions.

She is survived by her four children, Frank E. (Van) DuBose, III and his wife Eva DuBose of Bath and London, England, Dr. David McLean DuBose and his wife Mynel Yates DuBose of Atlanta, GA, Charles Wilson DuBose and his wife Patricia Rayle DuBose of Madison, GA, and Mary DuBose Nash and her husband Homer Byron Nash, Jr. of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Hunter Ryland DuBose and his wife Jenny Hammarlund of London, England, Brooke McLean DuBose of San Francisco, CA, Dr. Alison DuBose Sturm and her husband Dr. Jesse James Sturm of Atlanta, GA, Lauren Anne DuBose of Durham, NC, Homer Byron Nash, III and his wife Amanda Whitten Nash of Tega Cay, SC, Sallie Nash Harrell and her husband Steven Bennett Harrell of Pleasant Garden, NC, Charles Wilson DuBose, Jr. of Madison, GA; Margaret Louise Rayle DuBose of Madison, GA, and Frank Elsivan DuBose, IV of Madison, Georgia; two step grandsons, Arthur Joshua Harris and Adam Yates Harris; her sister, Margaret Wilson Turner, of Hendersonville, NC; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 5th, 2010, in Sardinia Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. John Dodd and the Rev. Dr. Gordon Reed officiating. Burial was in Sardinia-Gable cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to Sardinia Presbyterian Church, Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Harvin Clarendon County Library or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Virginia Elliott Robertson - May 29th, 2010

MANNING – Lois Virginia Elliott Robertson, 89, wife of Alasdair William McLeod Robertson, died Saturday, May 29, 2010, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born March 31, 1921, in the Panola Community of Pinewood, she was the daughter of the late Wayne Vivian and Annie Lou Britton Elliott. She attended Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, GA and Piedmont College in Demorest, GA; and was a retired secretary/bookkeeper for Elliott Lumber Company in Summerton and Elliott Gin Company in Manning; a member and former church secretary of Pisgah Pentecostal Holiness Church in Pinewood; a longtime member of Virginia’s Pride Garden Club; and an avid gardner.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a daughter, Elizabeth R. Wolf and her husband Bob Wolf of Georgetown; a granddaughter, Virginia Lee Huntsinger; four sisters, Ida E. Jenkinson of Summerton, Annie Lou “Joy” Elliott, Faye E. Coulliette, and Ethel E. Barwick, all of Pinewood; two brothers, Richard F. Elliott and John F. A. “Abie” Elliott, both of Pinewood.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Rev. Wayne V. Elliott, Marion S. Elliott, Rev. Tony Elliott, DuValle C. Elliott, and T. Walden Elliott.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 31, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with D. L. Barwick officiating. Burial was in Elliott cemetery in the Panola Community of Pinewood.
