MANNING – Janie Allene Tisdale Garner, 77, died Friday, May 28, 2010, at Lake Marion Nursing Home in Summerton.

Born August 26, 1932, in Williamsburg County, she was the daughter of the late Nathaniel and Eloise Morris Tisdale. She was retired from Exide, and was of the Church of God faith.

Surviving are two daughters, Elaine Fiddie and Evelyn Lamb of Manning; a sister, Bertha Mae Welch of Manning; two brothers, Fred Tisdale and James Edward Phipps of Kingstree; five grandchildren, Tammy Hipp, Stacey Puckett, Christiana Richburg, Cindy Richardson and Dee Lamb; and ten great grandchildren, Brett Puckett, Skylar Fulton, Marissa Puckett, Danni Richardson, Kirsten Richburg, Jaymi Hipp, Anna Puckett, Jordan Richburg, Morgan Hedge and Trinity McCoy.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, Robert Michael Garner; and a sister, Delma Dukes.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 30, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Ray Barfield officiating. Burial was in Kingstree Memorial Gardens in Kingstree.

Pallbearers were Larry Welch, Ben Butler, Hunter Butler, Cam Thompson, Eric Tisdale and Edward Bell.

Matthew Hodge Sr. - May 26th, 2010

MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA – Ret. Senior M/SGT USAF Matthew Hodge Sr., 75, formerly of Sumter, died Wednesday, May 26, 2010, in an Alabama nursing home after an extended illness.

Born December 6, 1934, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Hampton and Annie Dell Bryant Hodge. He served in the United States Air Force for 33 years, and retired from Civil Service. He was of the Church of Christ faith.

Surviving are a son, Matthew Hodge Jr. of Houston, TX; a daughter Laquitta Smith and her husband Tim of Mississippi; a brother, Raymond Hodge of Sumter; a sister, Rosa Miles and her husband D. D. of Manning; sister-in-law, Bobbie Hodge of Sumter; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Gerald Hodge, Hampton Hodge and Edmund Hodge; and a sister, Viola Brewer.

A graveside service was held at 5:00 p.m. Friday, July 16, 2010, at Home Branch Baptist Church cemetery, with the Rev. Sammy Thompson officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Parkinsons Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018.

Margie Ridgeway Bagnal - May 25th, 2010

MANNING - Margie Ridgeway Bagnal, 93, widow of James Everett Bagnal Sr., died Tuesday, May 25, 2010, in the Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born June 16, 1916, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Maggie Bell Craig Ridgeway and Allen Oliver Ridgeway. She was married in 1935 to James Everett Bagnal Sr. She was a member of Manning United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a son, James "Jim/Jimmy" Everett Bagnal Jr. of Cayce/Lake Marion; a daughter, Nell Bagnal Price (Mel) of Kingstree; two grandchildren, Jonolyn Bagnal Ferreri (John) of Beaufort and Cynthia Bagnal Eskew (Tim) of Braselton, GA; three great grandchildren, Jack Ferreri, Jamie Ferreri of Beaufort and Erin Eskew of Braselton, GA.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Ryan Ridgeway; a sister, Eunice Ridgeway Owens; two half-sisters, Jessie Mae Craig Bell Justice and Ethel Craig Bell Botkin; and her daughter-in-law, Mildred "Millie" Crocker Bagnal.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Debra Quilling Smith officiating. Burial was in Union United Methodist Church cemetery, Wilson.

Pallbearers were David Bagnal, Bill Brewer, Howard Bagnal, Butch Price, Cliff Bagnal and Don Herlong.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.

William Cunningham Owens - May 20th, 2010

SUMMERTON, SC - Mr. William Cunningham “Bill” Owens, Jr., age 76, of 1119 Danya Drive, formerly of Lancaster, died Thursday, May 20, 2010. He was born January 20, 1934 in Chester, SC, the son of the late William Cunningham Owens, Sr. and Mary Peay Owens and was the husband of Sarah Bell Owens. Mr. Owens was a retired plumber and a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church.

Mr. Owens is survived by his wife, Sarah Bell Owens of the home, 4 sons, William Ray Owens and his wife Barbara of Sumter, Daryl Owens of Goose Creek, Danny Jack Burch and his wife Sue, and James Michael Burch and his wife Jeannie both of Lancaster, 4 sisters, Louise Reece, Elaine Hamilton, Caroline Thompson and Margaret Cash all of Chester, 5 grandchildren, 7 step grandchildren, and several great grandchildren.

Mr. Owens was preceded in death by a son, Ricky Burch.

The Celebration of Life Graveside Funeral Service for Mr. Owens was at 3:00 pm, Saturday, May 22, 2010 at Lancaster Memorial Park by Rev. Dan Batson with burial to follow.

The Family of Mr. Owens suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church Building Fund, 128 Providence Road, Lancaster, SC 29720 or Southern Care Hospice, 217 Dozier Blvd., Suite 201, Florence, SC 29501.

Phyllis C. Metropol - May 17th, 2010

COLUMBIA - Mrs. Phyllis C. Metropol, 80, beloved wife of Dr. Harry J. Metropol, passed away Monday, May 17, 2010 in the Palmetto Health Baptist Hospital after a short acute illness. Mrs. Metropol was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, May 21, 1929. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Constantinides of Thessaloniki. In 1955 she was studying for her Masters Degree in Bacteriology and teaching medical students at the University of North Carolina, School of Medicine, when she met and married Dr. Harry J. Metropol of Duke University School of Medicine.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Harry J. Metropol; her three children and their spouses, Jeanne and Rick Haight of Hilton Head, Dr. Mary and John Metropol of Columbia and Dr. Stephen and Rebekah Metropol of Columbia; nine grandchildren, Elizabeth, Emily and Ehrick Haight of Hilton Head, Phyllis Eleni, Sara Gabrielle and James Zachary Metropol of Columbia, Harry Stephen, Alexandra Ermophile and Nicholas Stephen Metropol of Columbia. She is also survived by a sister, Despina Constantinides of Athens, Greece and her sister-in-law, Helen Metropol Katsos and two nieces, Maria and Angela Kiehling of Manning and Charleston respectively.

Mrs. Metropol was a member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Columbia. The viewing of the body (the trisaghion) took place 6 pm, Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. The funeral service took place Thursday, May 20, 2010, at 2 o’clock at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. The burial took place in Manning cemetery, Manning, SC at 4:30 p.m. assisted by Stephens Funeral Home & Crematory, Manning, SC. Serving as pallbearers were Dr. Tab Thompson, John Zourzoukis, Jack G. Metropol, Mike Malone, Arthur Bambalis, Harry S. Metropol, James Z. Metropol, Nicholas S. Metropol and Ehrick K. Haight, III. Memorials may be made to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1931 Sumter St, Columbia, SC 29201. Shives Funeral Home assisted the family.

Michael Edward Grim - May 14th, 2010

LAMAR - DARLINGTON COUNTY – Michael Edward Grim, 44, died as a result of a serious collision on Friday, May 14, 2010, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.

Born July 7, 1965, in Youngstown, OH, he was the son of Robert Grim, and the late Florance Ann Jenkinson Grim. He was a computer repair technician, and was formerly employed as a paramedic.

Surviving, in addition to his father of Manning, are a son, Robby Grim of Lamar; a girlfriend of many years, Dannette Tyler of Lamar; a brother, Robert “Grimmer” Grim of Manning; two sisters, Beverly Grim Trotter and Diane Grim Wright of Manning; one nephew; and five nieces.

A memorial service was held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 17, 2010 in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with Pastor Michael E. Murdoch officiating. Honorary pallbearers were members of Emergency Medical Services Program.

Keith Carson Deaton - May 12th, 2010

MANNING – Keith Carson Deaton, 69, husband of Christine Kirkley Deaton, died Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at his home in Manning.

Born April 19, 1941, in Pageland, he was the son of the late Robert Deaton and the late Anita Usher Deaton Austin. He was a retired SC Highway Patrolman, attended Wingate College in North Carolina, served in the S. C. National Guard, and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of Manning, are a daughter, Dena Melton and her husband Anthony of New Orleans, LA; two grandsons, Blake Douglas Smith and Austin Geddings, both of Manning; two brothers, Rev. Robert Deaton of Duncan, SC, and Norvard Deaton of Monroe, NC.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 15, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Robert L. Deaton officiating.

Memorials may be made to Tuomey Hospice, 115 N. Sumter St., Ste. 410, Sumter, SC 29150.

Harry McLemore Pritchard III - May 11th, 2010

ELLOREE – Harry McLemore “Mackie” Pritchard III, 59, died Tuesday, May 11, 2010, in Orangeburg Regional Medical Center.

Born February 19, 1951, in Ft. Benning, GA, he was the son of the late Harry McLemore Pritchard Jr. and the late Louise Neal Pritchard. He was employed in heating and air conditioning construction.

Surviving are special friend, Bonnie Stubbs of Santee; four brothers, Harold Pritchard of Tampa, FL, Carlos Pritchard of Manning, Larry Pritchard of Santee, and Gary Pritchard of Manning; three sisters, Debra Pritchard Shantie of Goose Creek, Dorothy Pritchard of Daytona, FL, and Tina Hansen of Sumter; and nineteen nieces and nephews.

Funeral services was held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 15, 2010 in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

Nettie Davidson Hurt - May 7th, 2010

LYNCHBURG, VA – Nettie Davidson Hurt, 94, of Lynchburg, VA, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great great grandmother, died May 7, 2010 at Avante’ of Lynchburg surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late Walker Joseph Hurt.

Born in Appomattox County, VA, on November 6, 1915, she was the daughter of the late William Thomas and Lou Carter Davidson. She was the last surviving family member of her generation. Mrs. Hurt was a member of Fairview Christian Church and a retired employee of Leggetts Dept. Store. She was a Past Noble Grand of Fairview Rebekah Lodge No. 52, a member of Lynchburg Home Rebekah Lodge No. 41, and a recipient of the Decoration of Chivalry.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Braxton Thomas Davidson and Ollie Jackson Davidson; and sisters, Hester D. Martin, Evelyn D. Martin and Blanche D. Pulliam.

She is survived by two sons, Daniel Joseph Hurt and wife Donna of North Myrtle Beach, SC, and Arthur William Hurt of Monroe, VA; three daughters, Roberta H. Tucker of Rustburg, VA, Rebecca H. Coleman and husband Alfred of Elon, VA, and VeLinda H. Reynolds and husband Dennis of Manning, SC. She is also survived by grandchildren, Steven E. Tucker and wife Debra of Lynchburg, Darryl W. Tucker and wife Cheryl of Fogelsville, PA, Michelle H. Riggs and husband Robert of Port Charlotte, FL, and Rebecca H. Flynn and husband Sean of Bluffton, SC. Also by great grandchildren, Joshua Tucker and Christina Tucker of Lynchburg, Angela T. Franklin and husband Jeremy of Rustburg, Seneca, Alyssa and Raleigh Tucker of Fogelsville, PA, Zoe and Sophia Riggs of Port Charlotte, FL and Sean Kelly, Evelyn, Veronica and Cooper Flynn of Bluffton, SC; a great great grandchild, J. L. Franklin of Rustburg, VA; and fourteen nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the nurses, CNAs and staff at Avante’ of Lynchburg for their loving care over the years.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Robinson Funeral Home in Appomattox, VA, by the Rev. Jack Hamilton and Parish Minister Jean Reynolds with burial in the Old Herman cemetery in Appomattox County.

Jeanette Lawrence - May 6th, 2010

OAK ISLAND, NC – Jeanette Madge Lawrence, 74, passed away peacefully at her home in Oak Island, NC, on Thursday, May 6, 2010.

Born June 5, 1935, in Anderson, SC, she was the daughter of the late Lonnie Lawrence and the late Madge Kolb Lawrence Turner. She was retired assistant Clerk of Court of Brunswick County, NC.

Surviving are two daughters, Paulette Perry of Oak Island, NC and Marlette Thompson of Southport, NC; a son, Marlon Morgan of New Hill, NC; a sister, Lois Caughman of Sumter; a brother, Robert Lawrence and his wife Edith of Riverdale, GA; a sister-in-law, Lynn Lawrence of Atlanta; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a grandson, Thomas Reid Perry; and a brother, Ernest Lawrence.

A graveside service was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 9, 2010, in Paxville cemetery, with the Rev. Eugene Mosier officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your local hospice care center.

K. Alvin Kennedy - May 4th, 2010

MANNING – K. Alvin Kennedy, 57, died Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at his residence in Manning.

Born August 12, 1952, in Manning, he was the son of L. Kenneth Kennedy and the late Lois Corbett Kennedy. He worked for Moore Oil Company in Manning, and Suburban Propane in Sumter, was in the South Carolina National Guard, and a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his father of Kingstree; two daughters, Kimberly Kennedy of Florence, and Jessica Kennedy of Manning; a son, Joseph Kennedy of Manning; a sister, Fay Benton and special brother-in-law Terry of New Zion; a brother, Dale Kennedy and his wife Tammy of Memphis, TN; special sister-in-law, Marilyn K. Bowling of Kingstree; and a very special friend, Irene W. Hardy of Turbeville.

He was predeceased by his twin brother, Allen Kennedy.

A graveside service was held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 8, 2010, in New Zion United Methodist Church cemetery, with the Rev. Murray Gibbons officiating, followed by a visitation in the church fellowship hall.

Pallbearers were Johnny Corbett, Chris Kennedy, Jason Benton, Trey Brown, Lin Rainey and Greg Kennedy.

Memorials may be made to New Zion United Methodist Church, 6905 Salem Road, New Zion, SC 29111, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Harry Lee Clark - May 2nd, 2010

MANNING – Harry Lee Clark, 71, died Sunday, May 2, 2010, at Tuomey Healthcare System in Sumter.

Born October 13, 1938, in Summerville, he was the son of the late Matthew David and Margaret Louise Clark Clark. He was a retired heavy equipment operator, and was a United States Air Force veteran.

Surviving are a daughter, Sonia Nguyen of Callaway, FL; special friend, Nell Lewis of Southport, FL; three brothers, Marion Clark of Sumter, Matthew Clark of Moncks Corner, and Chaplain Heyward Clark of Manning; a sister, Frances Feaster of Moncks Corner; and three grandchildren, Thia, Lien, and Mia Nguyen.

A graveside service with military honors was held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 5, 2010, in the Florence National cemetery, with Pastor Henry McCray officiating.

Memorials may be made to the S. C. Kidney Foundation, 6110 Executive Blvd., Suite 1010, Rocksville, MO 20852.
