Herman Rudolph Carter - April 27th, 2010

MANNING – Herman Rudolph Carter, 83, died Tuesday, April 27, 2010, in Veterans Victory House Nursing Home in Walterboro.

Born October 18, 1926, in Manning, he was a son of the late Jessie Weston and Mamie Elease Griffin Carter. He was a self-employed merchant, a pilot, a United States Army veteran of the Korean War, a member of the South Carolina National Guard, former co-owner of Carters 5 & 10 in Manning, owner of Carter’s Furniture in Summerton, and owner/operator of Carter’s 5 & 10 in Summerton. He was a member of Manning First Baptist Church.

Surviving are three brothers, Cecil Carter and J. W. Carter Jr. of Manning, and Russell Carter of Franklin, TN; a sister, Linda Adrell Craft of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews, Jeff and Joey Carter, Bob and Jay Carter, Gaye Weaver and Betsy Phillips, Pat and Mike Roberson, Jane Wolfkill, Donna Barrineau, Robbie Rowe, Tommy Carter and Laurie Cheatham.

He was predeceased by sisters, Gertrude Rowe, Barbara Roberson, and Ann Coleman; a nephew, Mark Carter; and a niece, Kim Coleman.

Graveside services were at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 30, 2010, in Manning cemetery, with the Rev. Todd Hodge and the Rev. Jerry Cottone officiating.

Memorials may be made to Pineview Pentecostal Holiness Church, 2111 Martin Luther King Hwy., Kingstree, SC 29556 or to a charity of one's choice.

Susan Sutherland Lutz - April 27th, 2010

MANNING - Sue Sutherland Lutz died suddenly Tuesday night April, 27, 2010. She was born in Charleston, South Carolina on Feb. 4, 1950 to Richard and Marianne Blossom and was raised in Florence.

She is survived by her husband Hallett Lutz of Manning, SC, two sisters, Bonni Johnson Morrell (Mrs. Charles Morrell) of Sturgeon Bay, WI and Mary Bishop Drake (Mrs. Shawn Drake) of Columbia, SC. She was a special aunt to her niece, Anna Drake, and her nephews, Walker Johnson of Charlotte, NC and Jess Bishop of Columbia, SC. She was a stepmother for Hallett's three children, Chad and Christie Lutz of Sumter, SC, Justin Lutz also of Sumter and Maggie Lutz of Greenville, SC. She was affectionally known as Su Su to Hallet's grandchildren Travis and Zach. Her best friend of 25 years is Sharon Raffaelle of James Island, SC.

For 28 years Sue taught kindergarten, first grade, and the visually impaired, and held school psychologist positions in the South Carolina public school system. As a former Director of Special Education and again in private practice Sue worked with autism assessments and supervised applied behavioral analysis programs. Sue was a member of the South Carolina Association of School Psychologists, the National Association of School Psychologists and the American Psychological Association.

She was currently devoting her time to working with parents and children in creative ways to help them adjust to developmental changes and behavioral issues.

A memorial service was held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 2010, in The Presbyterian Church at Manning, 233 N. Brooks Street, Manning, with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating.

Charles Everett Hinsdale - April 26th, 2010

MANNING – Charles Everett Hinsdale, 84, widower of Virginia C. Hinsdale, died Monday, April 26, 2010, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born September, 23, 1925, in Polk County, NC, he was the son of the late Alice Hinsdale. He was a United States Navy veteran of WWII, retired foreman for Spring Mills in Fort Mill, and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are an uncle, Bennett Hinsdale; a sister-in-law, Avie Sloan and her husband Kiss of Ft. Mill; and special friends, the Driggers family and the Ronald Brazzell family.

Funeral services were held at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at Little Star Pentecostal Holiness Church in Alcolu.

Graveside services were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 29, 2010, at Unity cemetery in Fort Mill. He was buried beside his beloved wife, Jenn.

Edna Anderson Welch - April 25th, 2010

SARDINIA – Edna Anderson Welch, 94, widow of Samuel Maxley Welch, died Sunday, April 25, 2010, at the home of her daughter in Lake City.

Born January 31, 1916, in Barrineau, she was a daughter of the late Eddie and Huldi Barfield Anderson. She was a retired farmer, housewife, and of the Holiness faith.

Surviving are a daughter, Linnie Bell Chockley of Lake City; four sons, Ernest Welch of Sardinia, Kenneth Welch of Turbeville, Ed Welch, and Bobby Welch, both of Gable; a brother, Buddy Anderson of Manning; three sisters, Juanita Anderson Parker and Maree Anderson Bryant, both of Sumter, and Ruth Anderson Blake of Charleston; 30 grandchildren, 58 great grandchildren, and 52 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four children, Sam Welch, Jr., Delbert Welch, Jewell Mae Johnson, and Ernest Dalton Welch; two brothers, Pearly and Lamb Anderson; and a sister, Lizzie Anderson Christmas Floyd.

Funeral services were 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 28, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev.Wayne Windham and the Rev. Raymond Shaw officiating. Burial was in the New Hope Christian Church cemetery in New Zion. Grandsons Russell Welch "Shorty", Bobby Welch Jr., Gary Chockley, Kent Welch, LaRue Welch, and Michael Welch served as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to the Freewill Baptist Home for Children, P.O. Box 229, Turbeville, SC 29162.

Marvin Keller Bledsoe - April 23rd, 2010

DALZELL – USAF Ret. Master Sgt. Marvin Keller Bledsoe, 75, husband of Sadie Evans Bledsoe, died Friday, April 23, 2010, at Tuomey Healthcare System.

Born May 12, 1934, in Johnston, SC, he was the son of the late Olin Lee Bledsoe Sr. and the late Alice Butler Bledsoe Matthews. He served in the United States Navy for four years; was a retired Master Sgt. United States Air Force after 28 years; received many awards and retired from Civil Service after fifteen years; received many awards and trophies from Boy Scout Troops #342, 361 and #363; and attended Sumter Baptist Temple in Sumter.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of Dalzell, are six sons, Bobby L., Richard, David (Dorris), Christopher (Amy Sue), John M. and Stephen K. Bledsoe; four daughters, Thereasa Bledsoe Prescott, Terry Welch Freeman, Tina Welch Childers, and Tammy Welch Austin, all of Sumter; two sisters, Jean Dorris B. Chrisley and Shirley Bledsoe Norris of Greenwood County; a brother, Olin Lee Bledsoe, Jr. of Johnston, SC; seven grandchildren, David Allen Bledsoe, Blake Bledsoe, Caitlyn Renee Bledsoe, Dalton Keller Bledsoe, William Childers, Shane Childers, and Daniel Kolb.

He was predeceased by a sister, Carrie Lee Bledsoe Miller; and four brothers.

Graveside services were held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, 2010, in Brewington cemetery with full military honors.

Rev. Thomas M. Mellette - April 22nd, 2010

SANTEE – Rev. Thomas Madison Mellette, 75, husband of Barbara Ann DuBose Mellette, died Thursday, April 22, 2010, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born August 3, 1934, in Turbeville, he was the son of the late Miller H. and Bessie McNeil Mellette. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and attended Columbia Bible College. He was a retired minister with fifty years of service to the ministry, a member of Summerton Baptist Church, where he pastored for ten years, and a retired educator and counselor in Williamsburg, Orangeburg, Sumter and Clarendon Counties.

Surviving in addition to his wife of Santee are a daughter, Vicki Ouzts and her husband Rock of Manning; two grandsons, Robert “Robbie” Thomas Ouzts, and Michael Owen Ouzts; a sister, Marbeth Brown of Blythewood; and a brother, Russell D. Mellette and his wife Grace of Lexington.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, April 25, 2010, in Summerton Baptist Church, with the Rev. Rob Pierce and the Rev. Donald Duncan officiating. Burial was in Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning.

Katherine Jones Goins - April 19th, 2010

GREELEYVILLE – Katherine Jones Goins, 79, widow of James Dewey Goins, died Monday, April 19, 2010, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born June 27, 1930, in Hartsville, she was the daughter of the late Byges Brooks and Bessie Miller Jones. She was a member of Goins Independent Holiness Church.

Surviving are five sons, Jimmy Goins, Ronnie Goins (Sue), Bobby Goins (Julia), Pete Goins (Rita), and William Goins (Sara); a daughter, Patricia Ann Haselden (Randy) all of Greeleyville; special friends, Rita Gayle Goins and Howard Goins; ten grandchildren; and eighteen great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, and a son, James Elree Goins.

A graveside service was held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, April 22, 2010 in Goins cemetery in Greeleyville, with the Rev. Veretha Cribb and the Rev. Mary Davis officiating. Pallbearers were Allen Purvis, Donnie Liggon, Wayne Dennis, Ricky Evans, Tommy Evans, and Lonnie Baxley.

Memorials may be made to Goins Independent Holiness Church, 411 Goins Road, Greeleyville, SC 29056.

Joycelyn Gibbons - April 14th, 2010

MANNING – Joycelyn P. Gibbons, 81, widow of Thaddeus P. Gibbons, died Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born January 29, 1929, in Cusaacs Crossroads in Florence County, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Milley Brown Pierce. She retired from Summerton Apparel after thirty years of service to the company, and was a member of Family Worship Assembly in Coward. She lost the love of her life, Thaddeus Gibbons, on March 23, 1987.

Surviving are two sons, Billy Gibbons and his wife Patricia of Manning, and Thad Gibbons and his wife Janet of Manning; three daughters, Linda Ardis and Charlie Shealey of Lake City, Judy Barker of Sumter, and Patsy Geddings and her husband Alton of Sumter; a brother, Cletus Pierce and his wife Jackie of Lake City; two sisters, Jessie Mae Floyd of Sumter, and Jewel Dean Pierce of Cusaacs Crossroads; eleven grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren; and two great, great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Cleo and Dewey Pierce; a sister, Jettiebyrd Windham; and an infant daughter.

Funeral services were at 3:00 p.m. Friday, April 16, 2010 in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. David Odom and the Rev. Keith Britt officiating. Burial was in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the church of one’s choice.

Stacy Carl Moody - April 12th, 2010

TURBEVILLE – Stacy Carl Moody, 41, husband of Robin Coker Moody, died Monday, April 12, 2010 in Hanover, Maryland.

Born March 22, 1969, in LaGrange, GA, he was the son of Jimmie Moody and Joyce Cook Heiser. He was a long haul truckdriver, and a member of Pine Dale Pentecostal Holiness Church. He is loved, and will be missed by his family.

Surviving in addition to his wife of Turbeville, are his father and wife Mary of Manning, his mother and husband Ralph of Oklahoma, and his paternal grandmother, Clyde Knowles of Manning. He also leaves to cherish his memory a son, Stacy Cole Moody of the home, and a daughter, Hannah Lauren Moody of the home; a sister, Brenda Moody of New Zion; two brothers, Sammy Moody of Manning, and Allen Moody and his wife Karen of Wedgefield; three sisters-in-law, including a special sister-in-law he loved to argue with, Lynn Coker Geddings of Turbeville, Heidi Green Horton (Robbie) of Turbeville, and Rebecca Coker of Turbeville; four nieces; and four nephews.

Funeral services were held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, April 17, 2010, in Pine Dale Pentecostal Holiness Church, 4450 Turbeville Hwy., Turbeville (Hwy. 378), with the Revs. LeGrande Taylor, Charles Hendricks and Derrick Fort officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Hal Whitlock, Kevin McElveen, Jeff Potter, Steve Card, Robbie Horton, and Allen Moody.

Earl Wesley Hill, Sr. - April 10th, 2010

MANNING – Earl Wesley Hill Sr., 62, husband of Lorraine Cook Hill, died Saturday, April 10, 2010, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born January 30, 1948, in Monroe, NC, he was the son of Boyce Cray Hill and the late Alene Parker Hill. He was retired credit manager for Springs Industries in Lancaster, SC and Carole Fabrics in Augusta, GA, a graduate of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, NC, with an accounting degree, and a United States Army veteran of the Viet Nam War. He loved fishing and boating.

Surviving, in addition to his father of Matthews, NC, and his wife of Manning, are two sons, Earl Wesley Hill Jr. and his wife Kimbra of Monroe, NC, and Seth Daniel Hill and his wife Kelley of Longs, SC; a stepdaughter, Rebecca J. Moran of Boston, MA; a brother, Arnold Cray Hill and his wife Ramona of Monroe, NC; three sisters, Bonnie Pender and her husband Phil of Monroe, Barbara Lemmonds and her husband Gary of Monroe, and Sylvia Hill of Monroe; two grandchildren, Rain and Slate Hill.

He was preceded in death by a son, Ian David Hill.

A memorial service was held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 16, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Jerry Neal Hodge officiating.

Peggy Daniels Carter - April 6th, 2010

MANNING – Peggy Dianne Daniels Carter, 61, widow of Robert Earl Carter, died Tuesday, April 6, 2010, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.

Born January 21, 1949, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Joseph William and Ida Louise Alsbrook Daniels. She was a registered nurse, recently retired from Lake Marion Nursing Facility, and was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are a brother, J. D. Daniels and his wife Christine of Manning; three sisters, Dot Stewart and her husband Bobby, Virginia Beatson and her husband Kenneth, and Betty Cribb and her husband Phil, all of Manning; nephews, David Daniels, Brian Beatson, Sam Stewart and Kevin Cribb; and nieces, Julie D. Brunson, Jennifer S. Nettles, Sandy S. Cook, Karen Beatson, and Kerrie Cribb.

She was predeceased by a nephew, Brandon Cribb.

A graveside service was held at 5:00 p.m. Friday, April 9, 2010, in Trinity United Methodist Church cemetery in Alcolu, with the Rev. Greg Allday officiating.
