Edward Manigault Stuckey - April 5th, 2010

SUMMERTON – Edward Manigault “Eddie” Stuckey, 78, husband of Betty Darnell Dawkins Stuckey, died Monday, April 5, 2010, in Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.

Born February 3, 1932, in Summerton, he was the son of the late Knight and May Davis Stuckey. He was retired from U. S. Fish and Wildlife on July 1, 1992, with 30 years of service, and a member of Summerton United Methodist Church. He attended University of South Carolina from 1951-53, and was self employed for twelve years at Stuckey’s Plumbing and Electric. In August 1973 Scoutmaster Eddie Stuckey lead Troop 382 of Summerton to the National Scout Jamboree in Moraine State Park, PA, and won many awards. He served for twenty years at Clarendon Memorial Hospital on the Board of Trustees, and was chairman for four years. He was a member and served on the SC Law Enforcement and Boating Advisory Board until September 2003. He was a member of the Lion’s Club, served as a Clarendon County Magistrate, and was appointed to Clarendon County School Board District 1.

Surviving in addition to his wife of Summerton are two sons, Charles Edward Stuckey and his wife Tina of York, SC, and John Coy Stuckey and his wife Alisha of Merritt Island, FL; a daughter, Angela Sellers Works and her husband John of Mt. Pleasant; and six grandchildren, Shannon Stuckey Bralley (Ben), Lauren Stuckey, Charlie Stuckey, Ashlee Stuckey, Joseph Davis Works, and Anna Grace Works.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Knight Stuckey Jr. and Preston Stuckey; and a sister, Louise Stuckey Owens.

A graveside service was held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, April 9, 2010 in Benbow Family cemetery near Summerton, with the Rev. Randy Bowers and the Rev. David Mitchell officiating. Honorary pallbearers were Summerton Men’s Sunday School Class.

Many thanks go out to the staff, nurses, CNA’s, and those who showed love and kindness to Eddie during his stay at Lake Marion Nursing Home.

James Ferrell Gardner - April 4th, 2010

ALCOLU – James Ferrell Gardner, 73, husband of Sadie Maybin Hodge Gardner, died Sunday, April 4, 2010, at Tuomey Healthcare System in Sumter.

Born July 14, 1936, in Sumter, he was the son of the late Robert L. and Gladys Player Gardner. He was a certified dental technician for over 53 years, served in the South Carolina National Guard, and was past chairman of deacons, Sunday school teacher, and active member of Clarendon Baptist Church in Alcolu. He loved his family and his church.

Surviving in addition to his wife of Alcolu are two sons, James Ferrell “Jay” Gardner Jr. and his wife Kim, and Lenn Gardner and his wife Tabitha of Alcolu; a brother, Robert L. Gardner Jr. and his wife Alice of Augusta, GA; and a sister, Mary Edna “Meg” Huggins and her husband Kermit of Hilton Head; six grandchildren, Lauren, Jordan, Robby, Katherine Ann, Sadie and W. L. Gardner.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 7, 2010, in Clarendon Baptist Church, with the Rev. Kirk Carlisle officiating. Burial was in Trinity United Methodist Church cemetery.

Pallbearers were David McCabe, James Richburg, Mark Evans, Tom Chappell, Jack Hubbard, and Neil Richardson.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon Baptist Church Building Fund, P. O. Box 307, Alcolu, SC 29001.

Lewis Fletcher Jackson - April 2nd, 2010

ALCOLU – Lewis Fletcher Jackson, 64, husband of Frances “Bunnie” Nichols Jackson, died Friday, April 02, 2010, at his home in Alcolu.

Born July 21, 1945, in Moncks Corner, he was a son of the late Lewis Fletcher Jackson, Sr. and the late Lurline Martin Jackson. He retired from the S.C. Highway Patrol in 1989, retired from the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office after four years of service, owned and operated Kodiak Mobile Home Setups, and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his wife of Alcolu, one daughter, Christie Bagnal and husband, David, of Summerton; one son, Lewis Brandon Jackson and wife, Sabrina, of Manning; one stepdaughter, Susan Aldridge of Covington, Georgia; three grandchildren, Tyler Aldridge, Jordan Self, and Hannah Bagnal.

Memorial services were at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 5, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Burgess officiating.

Hubert Leffel Taylor, Sr. - April 2nd, 2010

MANNING – Hubert Leffel “Fet” Taylor, Sr., 87, husband of Esther Irene Ridgeway Taylor, died Friday, April 2, 2010 at his home.

Born April 29, 1922, in Lexington, SC, he was the son of the late James Andrew and Sarah M. Harmon Taylor. He was a retired farmer, a United States Air Force Veteran of WWII, and a member of Clarendon Baptist Church in Alcolu.

Surviving in addition to his wife of Manning are a son, James Andrew “Jimmy” Taylor and his wife Mary of Manning; a daughter, Kathy Lee and her husband Gary of Manning; a brother, Thomas L. Taylor of Blythewood; a sister, Margaret Martin of Columbia; five grandchildren, Jody Taylor and his wife Amanda, Curt Lee, Derek Lee and his wife Lauren, Mary Kathryn Lee, and Taylor Lee, all of Manning; two great grandchildren, Anders and Cody Taylor of Manning.

He was predeceased by a son, Hubert Leffel “Little Fet” Taylor Jr.; and a grandson, James Andrew “Drew” Taylor Jr.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday in the Clarendon Baptist Church in Alcolu, with the Rev. Kirk Carlisle and the Rev. Charles Hattaway officiating. Burial was in Trinity United Methodist Church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jody Taylor, Derek Lee, Curt Lee, Aubrey Johnson, Cary Hattaway, Welborn Brewer, and Johnny Baker.

Special thanks to caregivers, Lottie Gray, Sarah Parker, Tuomey Hospice, Deb Embry, and Dorothy Richburg.

Virginia G. Ard - March 31st, 2010

GREELEYVILLE – Virginia Gamble Ard, 88, beloved wife of nearly 70 years of Rev. Emmett G. Ard, passed away on Wednesday, March 31, 2010, at Kingstree Nursing Facility.

Born May 18, 1921, in Greeleyville, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Jesse Gamble Gamble. She was a homemaker and helpmate to her husband, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great, great grandmother. She was a member of Floyd’s Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband of Greeleyville are two daughters, Bertha Burbage of Summerville, and Patricia Cummings and her husband Thomas of Greeleyville; two sons, Charles E. Ard and his wife Bea of Greeleyville, and Donald H. Ard and his wife Jonnie of Timmonsville; a sister, Katherine Joyner of Isle of Palms; eight grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and two great, great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 3, 2010 in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Billy Lee and Rev. Douglas Filyaw officiating. Burial was in Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning.

Memorials may be made to Floyd’s Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, 1701 New Zion Road, Lake City, SC 29560.

Homer Conrad Miles - March 28th, 2010

NEW ZION – Homer Conrad Miles, 67, husband of Carol Baird Miles, died Sunday, March 28, 2010, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Born March 27, 1943, in Lake City, he was the son of the late Roland and Thedocia Langley Miles. He was retired market manager for Piggly-Wiggly, a U. S. Army veteran, and was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife of New Zion are two daughters, Carol Ann Plant and her husband Kenneth of Autryville, NC, and Dinah Winnail and her husband Dr. Scott Winnail of Charlotte, NC; three grandchildren, Collin and Tara Winnail, and Evan Plant; a special grandchild, Will Stewart; and two sisters, Joyce Miles of Lake City, and Libby Cook of Columbia.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Penny Lynn Miles; and a brother, Jimmy Miles.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with Dr. Scott Winnail and Pastor Don Waterhouse officiating. Burial was in New Zion United Methodist Church cemetery.

Pallbearers were John Coleman, Ben Benenhaley, Jay McElveen, Johnny Baird, Joe Amerson, Lance Coker, Hunter Johnson, and Joey Robinson.

Devabhai Patel - March 24th, 2010

MANNING - Devabhai Patel, 88, husband of Deviben Patel, died Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at MUSC in Charleston.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 26, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

James Allen Muhlbauer - March 20th, 2010

MANNING – James Allen Muhlbauer, 73, husband of Inez Dawson Muhlbauer, died Saturday, March 20, 2010, at his home.

Born November 21, 1936, in Verga, NJ, he was the son of the late Charles L. Muhlbauer and the late Freda Seitz Muhlbauer Wendell. He was a retired boilermaker, and was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife of Manning are two sons, James A. Muhlbauer Jr. and his wife Marlene of Paris, Illinois, and Charles Wallace Muhlbauer and his wife Amie of Hubert, NC; a daughter, Michele Lea Hurst and her husband Vincent of Kelso, Washington; two brothers, Charles Louis Muhlbauer and his wife Marie of Thorofare, NJ, and Robert Albert Muhlbauer and his wife Judy of Colonial Manor, NJ; four grandchildren, Thomas Mecouch Jr., Heather Lynn Muhlbauer, James A. Muhlbauer III, and Kathryn M. Muhlbauer.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 23, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with Pastor Mike Murdoch officiating.

Frances Ann DuRant - March 19th, 2010

ALCOLU – Frances Ann DuRant, 72, died Friday, March 19, 2010, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born March 16, 1938, in Alcolu, she was the daughter of the late Warren Wentworth and Geneva Perry DuRant. She was a 1956 graduate of Manning High School, of Coastal Georgia Community College (then Brunswick Junior College), a member of Sardinia Presbyterian Church, a registered professional nurse in Georgia and South Carolina, a volunteer for the American Red Cross for over 12 years, and a member of the Exchangette Club of Brunswick, GA.

Survivors include three sons, William A. McDonald Jr. and his wife Mary of Keystone Heights, FL, Mark DuRant McDonald and his wife Robin of St. Simons Island, GA, and Warren Wentworth McDonald of Tunnel Hill, GA; a brother, Brigadier General Henry L. DuRant and his wife Kay Ravenel DuRant of Charleston; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

A graveside service was held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 24, 2010, in the DuRant New Harmony cemetery, Alcolu, with the Rev. John Dodd officiating.

Special thanks to Jasper Blanding, her long-time supporter, and to Sonya Blanding, Mary Ragin and Angela Blanding, who provided care and comfort in her final illness.

Mack Edward Geddings - March 19th, 2010

MANNING – Mack Edward Geddings, 69, husband of the late Hazel Ruth Goodlett Geddings, died Friday, March 19, 2010, at his home.

Born May 5, 1940, in Sumter, he was the son of the late Jim W. Geddings, Sr., and the late Dorothy Mae Brown Geddings. He was a United States Air Force veteran, a retired Clarendon County Sheriff’s Deputy, and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are a sister, Henrietta “Henri” Geddings and fiancé Thomas M. Nichols of W. Long Branch, NJ; a brother, Jim W. Geddings and friend Dot Ardis of Sumter; stepson, Marty Ramsey and wife Jennifer of Manning; two step grandchildren; and beloved Jack Russell “Peanut”.

A graveside service was held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 22, 2010, in Evergreen Memorial Park in Sumter, with the Rev. Dale Turner officiating.

Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were law enforcement officers.

Sally Shupe - March 18th, 2010

SUMMERTON – Sally Wynn McBride Shupe, 66, wife of John Alexander Shupe Sr., passed away on Thursday, March 18, 2010, at her home after a long illness.

Born May 31, 1943, in Florence, she was the daughter of the late Blackwell Duncan and Lurline Waddell McBride. She was a graduate of McClenaghan High School, and Betty Stevens Beauty School, and was a practicing beautician for several years. She went back to school and received an associate degree in nursing from Florence Darlington Tech, and practiced nursing until 2009, retiring from Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

She was a member of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders and Exhibitors Association, United Racking Horse Owners and Exhibitors Association, Florence Shag Club, and Society of Stranders.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Novis Lurline Ward, and Bonnie M. Ashcroft.

Survivors, in addition to her husband of Summerton, are a son, J. A. Shupe Jr. of Pittsburgh, PA; two daughters, Tracy S. Bennett and husband Winston G. of White Pine, TN, and Larisa S. Hagen and husband David M. of Frankenmuth, MI; seven grandchildren, Robin Biggerstaff, Candace Shupe, John-Michael Philips, Graham Bennett, Gabriella Hagen, Duncan Hagen, and Savannah Hagen; three great grandchildren, Xander, Madison, and Jillian Biggerstaff; and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral service were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 20, 2010 in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Dr. Steve Shugart officiating.

Violet M. Whytsell - March 16th, 2010

MANNING, SC - Violet Melissa Whytsell, beloved wife of Jim Whytsell, passed away on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at Palmetto Richland Heart Hospital in Columbia, SC.

Born in Dille, West Virginia on February 21, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Dessie and Levi Martin. She lived with her husband and their two children in Charleston, West Virginia, where she also worked as a legal secretary. In 1996, she and her husband retired to the Wyboo Plantation community in Manning, SC. An avid golfer and gardener, she cherished her family and her many neighbors and friends. She was a member of the Women’s Circle of The Presbyterian Church at Manning, and was actively involved in serving her church and the surrounding area.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Eric Whytsell and his wife Ginger of Chevy Chase, Maryland; her daughter Melissa Hodges and her husband Jon of Raleigh, North Carolina; and two grandchildren, Thomas Hodges and Mary Blair Whytsell. Additionally, she is survived by her siblings Maxine Ellison, Lorene Campbell, Grace Cavender, Betty Price, Phyllis Graham, Loretta Keener, and Joe Martin.

A service was held at The Presbyterian Church at Manning on Friday, March 19 at 11 AM, with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be sent to the Presbyterian Church at Manning, P. O. Box 207, Manning, SC 29102.
