Charles Vernon Singleton - March 10th, 2010

MANNING – Charles Vernon Singleton, 79, husband of Gwendolyn Windham Singleton, died Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at his home.

Born May 10, 1930, in Sumter, he was the son of the late Jessie Mason and Pauline Dora Weir Singleton. He was former Manning Chief of Police, formerly employed by the Department of Juvenile Justice, and a Mason.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of 59 years of Manning, are a daughter, Paula Jordan and her husband Jamey of Hartsville; a granddaughter, Jessica Boone and her husband Travis of Columbia; two great grandsons, Nolan and Jordan Boone; three brothers, Jessie Singleton of Sumter, William Singleton of Belton, and Tony Singleton and his wife Ginger of Summerton.

A memorial service was held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 14, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

William B. Moriarity - March 7th, 2010

MANNING – William Bryant “Bill” Moriarity, 55, husband of Debra Ryan Moriarity, died Sunday, March 7, 2010, in Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia.

Born August 26, 1954, in Leesburg, VA, he was the son of Jack Moriarity and the late Lyndel Willingham Moriarity. He was a municipal employee and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his father and wife of Manning are a number of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and an uncle.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating. Burial was in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were C. T. Ryan, Ray Arthur, Dan Wharton, Tom Weatherald, Brian Keesling, and Eddie Barrett.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Greenville-Spartanburg NC-SC Office, 16-A Brozzini Court, Greenville, SC 29615.

Robert Earl Carter - March 6th, 2010

MANNING – Robert Earl Carter, 64, husband of Peggy Daniels Carter, died Saturday, March 6, 2010, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born June 23, 1945, in Converse, SC, he was the son of Georgie Guy Carter Lamm and the late George Hoyle Carter. He was a salesman, a United States Navy/Marine Corps veteran of the Viet Nam era, and was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife of Manning, and his mother of Spartanburg, are three brothers, George Hoyle Carter Jr. and his wife Laura of Spartanburg, Joseph Dean Carter and his wife Marlene of Spartanburg, and James Edward Carter and his wife Pat of West Columbia; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A graveside service with military honors was held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 12, 2010, at Fort Jackson National cemetery in Columia.

Arthur Melvin Thigpen - March 5th, 2010

MANNING – Arthur Melvin Thigpen, 85, beloved husband of Flossie Ardis Thigpen, died Friday, March 5, 2010, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born August 28, 1924, in Manning, he was the son of the late Thomas Jackson and Annie Corrie Gladden Thigpen. He was a United States Army Air Corps veteran of WWII, a retired mechanic from Santee Motor Company, and a member of Manning United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife of Manning, are three daughters, Marie Brunson and husband Frankie of Alcolu, Linda Liscio and husband Ralph of Manning, and Helen Bosshart and husband Chuck of Seabrook Island; two sisters, Elizabeth Pack of Alcolu, and Frances Ardis of Manning; six grandchildren, Kathy Cramer and husband Larry, Cheryl Blank and husband Bryan, Lin Brunson and wife Pam, Lisa Gibbons, Von Corbett and husband Johnny, and Tina Stoia and husband Tommy; ten great grandchildren; and one great, great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Ed Gibbons; a sister, Iola Amerson; and a brother, Thomas Thigpen.

A graveside service was held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 8, 2010, in Clarendon Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Debra Quilling Smith and the Rev. Dr. James C. Adams officiating.

Pallbearers were Lin Brunson, Larry Cramer, Bryan Blank, Johnny Corbett, Tommy Stoia, Brent Cramer, and Gib Gibbons.

Memorials may be made to Manning United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 68, Manning, SC 29102.

Nancy Blackwell Tucker - March 4th, 2010

SUMMERTON – Nancy Blackwell Tucker, 55, died Thursday, March 4, 2010, in McLeod Hospital in Florence.

Born September 16, 1954, in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late William Lionel Blackwell Sr. and the late Rena Ward Blackwell. She was a secretary for a number of businesses during her lifetime, and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are companion Gregg Callen of Summerton; two sisters, Carol Brzyski of Summerville, and Rachel Drose and husband Don of Manning; three brothers, Roger Blackwell of Manning, Wayne Blackwell and David Blackwell, both of Sumter.

She was preceded in death by a brother, William Lionel Blackwell Jr.

Services were private.

Memorials may be made to Animal Shelter of Clarendon County, 5079 Alex Harvin Highway, Manning, SC 29102.

John Willard Hain - February 28th, 2010

SANTEE – (RET) USN Master Chief John Willard Hain, 92, husband of Elizabeth Gerber Hain, died Sunday, February 28, 2010, at The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.

Born June 9, 1917, in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of the late John A. and Ruth B. McCubbin Hain. He was a retired United States Navy Master Chief, and was in the Seabees.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of Santee, are stepchildren, Susan Dressler (Don) of Edward, CO, and Michael Hinton of Orlando, FL; and four stepgrandchildren.

Services were private.

Ansel Rose McFaddin, Jr. - February 27th, 2010

MANNING – Ansel Rose McFaddin Jr., 73, husband of forty-three years to the late Dorothy Eadon “Dotty” McFaddin, died Saturday, February 27, 2010.

Mr. McFaddin was born July 17, 1936, to the late Ansel Rose McFaddin Sr. and the late Frances Ruth Richbourg McFaddin. He grew up in the Gable community and graduated from East Clarendon High School. He attended the University of South Carolina and graduated from Presbyterian College.

Mr. McFaddin entered business with his father-in-law, Clarence Edwin Eadon, at People’s Furniture and Appliance Store in Manning; later became owner, and retired after forty-four years of service to the community. He was an active member of Manning United Methodist Church serving on various committees, to include the Capital Funds Campaign and teaching youth Sunday school. He served on the Board of Trustees of Manning Christian Academy, volunteered for the American Red Cross, and was an “honorary member” of the Clarendon Pilot Club. He enjoyed outdoor activities and served as secretary-treasurer and president of the Home Lake Club.

He leaves to cherish and honor his memory a son, Dr. Ansel R. McFaddin III and wife Dr. Jennifer McGraw McFaddin of Sumter; a daughter, Frances McFaddin Moody and husband Scott Holman Moody of Hilton Head Island; four grandchildren, Katelyn Rose McFaddin, Robert McFaddin Moody, John Ansel McFaddin, and Eadon Kressly Moody; a sister, Martha Lee McFaddin Rose and husband Ollen Rose of Manning; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at Manning United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Debra Quilling Smith officiating. Burial was in Gable, SC, in the Sardinia Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Oscar Gerald (Jerry) Robertson, James Thomas (Jay) Robertson, Oscar Gerald Robertson, Paul Eadon Butler, Dr. John Elliott (Jack) Rowe, III, and Michael Durden Cousar.

Memorials may be made to the Clarendon Pilot Club’s Dotty McFaddin Medical Professionals Scholarship Fund, P. O. Box 495, Manning, SC 29102, to the Sardinia Presbyterian Church cemetery Fund, 1386 Garland Road, Sardinia, SC 29143, or to the Manning United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 68, Manning, SC 29102.

Julian Elmore Cousar - February 27th, 2010

SUMTER – Julian Elmore Cousar, 75, widower of Susan Hampton Geddings Cousar, died Saturday, February 27, 2010, at Tuomey Hospital in Sumter.

Born May 31, 1934, in Sardinia, he was the son of the late John Landon and Annie Mable Ridgill Cousar. He attended The Citadel in Charleston, was a United States Air Force veteran, and a retired civil service business manager at the Federal Correctional Institute. He was of the Presbyterian faith.

Surviving are two daughters, Susan Cousar Smith of Sumter, and Julie Cousar McGuire and her husband Dale of Anderson; a sister, Carolyn Hoff and her husband Buddy of Manning; six grandchildren, Brandon and Lauren Smith, Joshua, Molly, Emzi, and Ally McGuire; two great grandchildren, Landon and Dillon Smith; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Kennedy; and five brothers, John L., Allison, Allen, Richard and Bobby Cousar.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Rodney Howard officiating. Burial was in Sumter cemetery.

Donald George Haberman - February 24th, 2010

MANNING, SC – Donald George Haberman, 80, husband of Donna Lee Lawson Haberman, passed away on Wednesday, February 24, 2010, in Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton, SC.

Born February 25, 1929, in Dunstable, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Carl and Lena Parkhurst Haberman. He was a United States Army Air Corps veteran, and was of the Methodist faith. He retired to Manning, SC, after owning and operating his painting contracting business, Don Haberman & Son, for over forty years, which his son still operates.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of Manning, are three daughters, Donalene Groom and her husband Thomas of Westford, MA, Candice Gardner of S. Berwick, ME, and Kristin Knowlton and her husband Steve of Ipswich, MA; a son, Donald George Haberman Jr. of Groton, MA; three brothers, Carl Haberman of Hudson, NH, Robert Haberman of Tilton, NH, and Warren Haberman of Raymond, NH; a sister, Carlene Buote of Dracut, MA; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Ed Haberman; and a sister, Beverly Haberman.

A memorial service was held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 24, 2010, at Westford Methodist Church, Westford, MA. Morse-Bayliss Funeral Home, 122 Princeton Blvd., Lowell, MA, was in charge of the memorial service in Massachusetts.

Ruth E. Daugherty - February 24th, 2010

SUMMERTON – Ruth E. Wing Miller Daugherty, 70, wife of C. M. “Chuck” Daugherty, died Wednesday, February 24, 2010, at McLeod Hospice House in Florence.

Born June 9, 1939, in Schenectady, NY, she was the daughter of the late Warren and Alice Barnard Wing.

Surviving, in addition to her husband of Summerton, are a daughter, Carla Woodruff of Summerville; a son, Steven Miller of Summerville; a stepson, Jay Charles Daugherty of Elloree; three sisters, Alice Bayer of San Dimas, CA, Jeanette Crumine of Moreno Valley, CA, and Paula Sally of Azusa, CA; two brothers, Warren Wing of Salem, VA, and Paul Wing of Summerton; two grandchildren, Stephanie Miller and Lydia Evans of Summerville; and two step grandchildren, Jessica Marie Daugherty, and Meagan Connor Daugherty, of Elloree.

Memorials may be made to McLeod Hospice, 1203 East Cheves Street, Florence, SC 29506-2711.

Betty Guess Timmons - February 23rd, 2010

SUMMERTON – Betty Guess Timmons, 76, beloved wife of F. Dewey Timmons, Sr. died Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia.

Born August 18, 1933, in Greeleyville, she was the daughter of the late Leroy Olin Guess Sr. and the late Ruby Louise Guess. She was retired office manager at Palmetto Pigeon Plant in Sumter, and was a member of Santee Baptist Church, Manning.

Surviving, in addition to her husband of Summerton, are a daughter, Betsy McCray and husband David of Mocksville, NC; two sons, F. Dewey “Tim” Timmons Jr. and wife Becky of Columbia, and Karl Timmons and wife Dee Alice of Lexington; seven grandchildren, Jason McCray, Amy Stokes, Todd, Jonathan, Stuart, Tyler and Austin Timmons; and two great grandchildren, Blake Stokes and Emma McCray.

She was predeceased by a sister, Ruby Couture; and a brother, Roy Guess Jr.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jimmy Eldreth officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park in Sumter.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Memorials may be made to Epworth Children’s Home, 2900 Millwood Avenue, Columbia, SC 29205-1358.

Hattie Billups Dean - February 23rd, 2010

MANNING – Hattie Billups Dean, 98, widow of William Harper Dean Jr., died Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at Tuomey Hospital in Sumter.

Born August 5, 1911, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Herbert Brown Billups and the late Lou Richburg Billups. She was a retired secretary-bookkeeper, a member of Summerton United Methodist Church and the Willie Dingle Bible Class, and a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include a son, William Glenn Dean and his wife Merline of Stratford, TX; and three grandchildren.

A graveside service was held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 26, 2010, in the St. Paul cemetery in Summerton, with the Rev. Randy Bowers officiating.
