MANNING – Janice Lynn Barnhart Cortez, 60, died Wednesday, February 17, 2010, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

She is survived by a son, Robert Shadd Jr. of Manning; a daughter, Candace Kupcheck Walker of Pennsylvania; four grandchildren; two sisters, Donna Ridgeway of Manning, and Kim Weatherford of Darlington; a brother, Douglas Barnhart Jr. of Pittsburgh, PA.

Funeral services were private.

Lawrence Edward Braxton - February 16, 2010

ALCOLU – Lawrence Edward Braxton, 72, husband of Nadine Marie Lane Braxton died Tuesday, February 16, 2010, at Tuomey Hospital in Sumter.

Born May 9, 1937, in Alcolu, he was the son of the late John Patrick and Loutisha Rogers Braxton. He was a United States Army veteran, a retired supervisor at the Clarendon County landfill, and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of Manning, are a son, Lawrence Wayne Braxton and his wife Paula of Sumter; a stepdaughter, Peggy Barton of Holly Hill; a stepson, Tom Judy Jr. and his wife Suzi of Manning; a granddaughter, Cheryl Ann Braxton of Sumter; three step grandchildren, Heather Judy and Deanna Judy of Manning, and Julie Marissa Gostic and husband Michael of Livermore, CA; three brothers, Jack Braxton and Bobby Braxton of Alcolu, and Charles Braxton of Sumter; and a sister, Annette Griffin of Sumter.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Alfred Willis officiating. Honorary pallbearers were Ed Dyson, Donnie Dixon, Ray Brown, Gene Conyers, Tim Hilliard, Louis Hilton, Jake Ross and Bunny Clark.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Greenville-Spartanburg NC-SC Office, 16-A Brozzini Court, Greenville, SC 29615, or to the American Heart Association, SC Office, 520 Gervais St., Ste. 300, Columbia, SC 29201.

Raymond Alton Alsbrook - February 14th, 2010

MANNING – Raymond Alton Alsbrook, 63, husband of Barbara Ann Mitchum Alsbrook, passed away on February 14, 2010, at WBJ Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia.

Born May 27, 1946, in Manning, he was the son of the late George Hardy and Lucy Mae Ridgeway Alsbrook. He was a United States Marine Corps veteran of the Viet Nam War, and was owner and operator of Alsbrook Construction, a member of Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church, a member of United Bird Hunters, and Southern Trail Riders.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of Manning, are a son, Ray Alsbrook and wife Catherine Anne of Summerton; two daughters, Laura Alsbrook of Manning, and Aimee Steen and husband Buck of Manning; three grandchildren, Caitlan and Justin Alsbrook, and Brittani Steen; a brother, Marvin Alsbrook and wife Mary of Manning; five sisters, Lila Ellis and husband Bill of Manning, Margaret Ardis of Manning, Jeanette Lowder and husband Lee of Pinewood, Angela Hodge and husband Harold of Sumter, and Pam Beatson and husband Billy of Manning; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. James O. Floyd and the Rev. Morris Smith officiating. Burial was in Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Al Hovermale, Michael Hovermale, Johnny Alsbrook, Kevin Alsbrook, Brian Nexsen, and Raymond Timmons. Honorary pallbearers were Lenny Corbett and Jerry Moody.

Emma Lee Stone Rhame - July 14th, 2010

PAXVILLE – Emma Lee Stone Rhame, 92, widow of Thomas Boyd Rhame, died Wednesday, July 14, 2010, in East Cooper Medical Center in Mt. Pleasant.

Born March 15, 1918, in Paxville, she was the daughter of the late Ethan Allen and Viola Rhame Stone. She was a member of Paxville Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Judith R. Fell and her husband Robert L. of Mt. Pleasant; a son, Thomas Boyd Rhame Jr. and his wife Kathy of Columbia; four grandchildren, Jason Rhame Fell, Nathan Dolen Fell, Courtney Stone Kort, and Christian Cannon Rhame; and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, July 17, 2010, in Paxville Baptist Church, with the Revs. Gene Mosier, Tom Vassar and Richard Hudson officiating. Burial was in Paxville cemetery.

Pallbearers were John H. Lewis III, Michael Rhame, Wade McLeod, Al Harris Jr., Charles “Buck” Ingram and John H. Lewis Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Marion S. Riggs, Carey Turner, Earldine Brown, Lloyd Rhame and Jimmy Brunson.

Memorials may be made to Paxville Baptist Church, E. A. Stone Light Fund, P. O. Box 5005, Paxville, SC 29102.

Diana Kerlin - July 13th, 2010

SUMMERTON – Diana Beck Kerlin, wife of David Scott Kerlin, passed away on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at her home.

Born March 30, 1950, in Toledo, OH, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Virginia Bryan Beck. She was a member of Summerbrook Community Church in Summerville.

Surviving, in addition to her husband of Summerton, are a daughter, Jenny Kerlin of Summerton; a granddaughter, Emilee Grace Kerlin; a sister, Cynthia Beck of Oregon; and two brothers, Steven Beck and John Beck, both of Maumee, OH.

A graveside service was held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 16, 2010, at Trinity United Methodist Church cemetery in Alcolu, with the Rev. Greg Varner officiating.

Edna Grace Hardin Pyritz - July 11th, 2010

MANNING – Edna Grace Hardin Pyritz, 83, widow of Kenneth Pyritz, first married to the late Hoke F. Hardin, died Sunday, July 11, 2010, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born March 24, 1927, in Marion, she was a daughter of the late Rembert Collins and the late Eva Mae Collins Collins. She was a retired inspector for Westinghouse Nuclear Fuel Division in Columbia. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Columbia, and attended Good Shepherd Baptist Church and New Covenant Presbyterian Church, both of Manning.

She is survived by three daughters, Patricia (Larry) Gallman of Manning, Debra (Ron) Baker of Spartanburg, and Denise (Tim) Benken of Florida; a sister, Miriam Bennett of High Point, NC; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Gloria Jean Hardin.

Graveside services were at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, 2010, in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Columbia with the Rev. James Salter officiating. Pallbearers were Larry Gallman, James Bacon, Robert Bacon, Ira Bacon, Tim Benken, Everett Goff, and Ronald Johnson.

Jeannette Ann Benoit - July 10th, 2010

MANNING – Jeannette Ann Benoit, 45, died Saturday, July 10, 2010, at her home in Manning.

Born February 2, 1965, in Salem, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of Roland Louis Benoit and the late May Elizabeth Mawdsley Benoit. She was of the Protestant faith.

Surviving in addition to her father of Manning are a son, Brandon L. Benoit (Tiffiny) of Manning; two granddaughters, Noelle Benoit and Lacey Barrett of Manning; a brother, Roland Benoit of Florida; and three sisters, Lynne Benoit, Lois Benoit and Annette Benoit, all of Florida.

Funeral services were private.

Anna M. Hodge Harris - July 8th, 2010

ORANGEBURG – Mrs. Anna Margaret Hodge Harris, formerly of Greenville & Chapin, age 90, widow of the late Mallon Perdieu Harris Jr., died Thursday, July 8, 2010, at The Methodist Oaks in Orangeburg.

Born November 19, 1919, in Alcolu, she was the daughter of the late Albert Cunningham and Nannie Witherspoon Hodge. A graduate of Draughons Business College in Columbia, she was a retired legal secretary for the State Legislature and Greenville County Purchasing & Personnel for seventeen years, retiring in 1982. She was a member of the National Legal Secretary’s Association; a member and past president of the SC Legal Secretary’s Association; a member and past president of the Greenville Legal Secretary’s Association; a life member of the Columbia Legal Secretary’s Association; an honorary member of the Orangeburg League of Professional Secretaries;
a member of the Eastern Star, Columbia Chapter; formerly a member of the Eastern Star at Chapin; and a member of Chapin United Methodist Church in Chapin.

Surviving are a daughter, Anna Marilyn Harris Turney of Chapin; a son, Mallon Philip Harris of Dunwoody, GA; a sister, Arena Holladay Perry (Bill) of Manning; two grandsons, Kenneth Andrew Turney and David Earl Turney; and two great grandsons, Blake Andrew Turney and Chandler Andrew Turney.

She was predeceased by her husband; three brothers, J. G. Hodge and wife Martha Ann, Clifton Hodge and wife Ruby, and David Hodge and wife Emma; two sisters, Mary Hodge Pilchard and husband Allen, and Frances Hodge Gause.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 10, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Revs. Jodie Flowers and Carol Holladay officiating. Burial was in Trinity United Methodist Church cemetery in Alcolu. Pallbearers were nephews and grandsons.

Donald Norris Yates - July 5th, 2010

MANNING – Donald Norris Yates, 70, widower of Hazel Oakley Yates, died Monday, July 5, 2010, at his home.

Born December 8, 1939, in Turbeville, he was the son of the Sam E. and Bessie Joye Yates. He was formerly employed by Coca-Cola in Sumter, and was of the Southern Methodist faith.

Surviving are a daughter, Robin Yates of Sumter; two grandchildren, Lane Browder and Regan Yates; four sisters, Joyce Marvin Mixon of Florence, Sherian Matthews of Turbeville, Kay Player (Mac) of Sumter, and Sandra Gaskins (Larry) of Thailand; and a brother, Jack Yates (Rosemary) of Aloha, Oregon.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Gina Yates; a son, Donald Norris Yates Jr.; a brother, S. E. Yates, Jr. and his wife Ruth; and a sister, Rosa Mae Kelly.

The family wishes to express a special thanks to Vernon and Janice Fisher.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jack Coker officiating. Burial was in Turbeville United Methodist Church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Lyrue Driggers, Thomas Purvis, Ted Boan, Robert “Robbie” Robertson, Errol McDonald, Allen Fisher, Tony Cooper, and Danny Laney.

Lois Baggette Turner - July 4th, 2010

ROCKVILLE, MD - Lois Baggette Turner, 92, widow of O. B. "Jake" Turner, died Sunday, July 4, 2010, in a Maryland nursing home.

Born on May 15, 1918, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late R. C. and Elizabeth Ridgeway Baggette. She was a graduate of Manning High School and Atlantic Christian College (Barton College of Wilson, NC); an English teacher; and loved reading, playing bridge, the ocean, and most of all, her family.

She was predeceased by a sister, Carolyn Baggette White; and a great grandson, Alexander Turner.

Surviving are her children, Joseph B. Turner (Linda Hart) of Nashville, TN, Bette Darling (Rick) of Poolesville, MD; grandchildren, Scott Turner (Sandy) of Lacrosse, WI, David Turner (Rita) of Glendale, CA, and Laura Patton (Travis) of Poolesville, MD; great grandchildren, Dakota Turner, Tanner Turner and Caleb Patton.

A graveside service was held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 9, 2010 in Manning cemetery, with the Rev. David Carlson officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP), 3505 E. Frontage Rd., Suite 315, Tampa, FL 33607.

Marjorie Salmon Watts Gackstatter - July 3rd, 2010

MANNING, SC – Marjorie Salmon Watts Gackstatter, 90, widow of John Gackstatter, passed away Saturday, July 3, 2010, at the Lake Marion Nursing Home in Summerton.

Born September 16, 1919, in Brewster, NY, she was the daughter of the late Adalbert Salmon and Estella May Everett Salmon.

She was predeceased by a son, Gary Wayne Watts; two brothers, Harold and Orrin Salmon of Brewster, NY; two sisters, May, and Marjorie, who passed away in the terrible influenza epidemic in 1919, just four months before Mrs. Gackstatter was born. Her parents named her Marjorie in honor of the 19 year old daughter they had lost. She was married for 25 years to the late Arnold Watts of Pawling, NY, and together they raised four children.

She is survived by a daughter, Arlen Gackstatter of Manning; two sons, John Watts and wife Ruth of Manning and William Watts of Ft. Bragg, CA; grandchildren, Christine Cates, Betty Jo Watts, Gary Watts Jr., Shari Gackstatter, Terra Sonora, Melissa Rhodes and Laurie Watts; great granddaughter, Amy Leigh Deaton; and great grandson, Wesley Watts.

Marjorie will be sadly missed by her many friends, old and new. She was blessed with a beautiful smile and a willingness to help others when needed.

Services are private.
