MANNING – Sharyn Lee Bidgood Gilbert, 64, wife of John Richard Gilbert Jr. passed away on Thursday, August 12, 2010, at Tuomey Healthcare System in Sumter.

Born December 1, 1945, in Dover, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Charles Tildon and Alice Catherine Dunn Bidgood. She was of the Presbyterian faith.

Surviving, in addition to her husband of Manning, are two daughters, Wendy G. Vargas and her husband Donald, and Leilani L. “Loni” Knowlton and her husband Richard “Rocky”, both of Sumter; two brothers, Bruce C. Bidgood and his wife Maria of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and Stuart Bidgood of Sparta, New Jersey; five grandchildren, Ashton, Joshua and Walker Knowlton, and Selena and Daniel Vargas; a number of nieces and nephews; and her loving and attentive sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

Funeral services were held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, August 14, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. John C. Hall officiating.

Larry Coker - August 11th, 2010

SUMTER - Larry Wayne Coker, Sr., 63, husband of the late Pamela McElveen Coker, died Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Manning, he was a son of the late Brightman Blonzo Coker, Sr. and the late Dorothy Kolb Coker. Mr. Coker was a mobile home salesman and served in the US Army National Guard.

Survivors include three children, Larry Wayne Coker, Jr. of Sumter, Jennifer Elizabeth Coker of Silver Spring, MD, and Kimberly Megan Coker of Irmo; two grandchildren, Kaleob Brytmon Coker and Hazel-Grace Olivia Coker; a brother, Brightman Blonzo “Sparky” Coker, Jr. of Mobile, AL; and two sisters, Linda Lovell and Diane Hodge both of Manning.

Funeral services were held at 11 AM Friday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Harold Waynick officiating. Burial was in the Manning cemetery.

Lionel Marion Holladay Sr. - August 9th, 2010

MANNING – Lionel Marion Holladay Sr., 87, widower of Daisy Eugenia Tobias Holladay, died Monday, August 9, 2010, at his home in Manning.

Born June 10, 1923, in Manning, he was the son of the late William Henry and Janet Tobias Holladay. He was a WWII United States Army veteran, a member of Union United Methodist Church at Wilson, and maintenance supervisor at Clarendon Memorial Hospital for over twenty years.

He is survived by a daughter, Kathy Gales and husband Tommy of Manning; two sons, Lionel M. “Buddy” Holladay Jr. and his wife Gwen of Manning, and Daniel W. Holladay and his wife Dora of Manning; two sisters, Addie Weisiger of Powhatan, VA, and Dorothy Begley of Jacksonville, FL; four grandsons, Trey Holladay and his wife Courtney, Judson Strange and his wife Melinda, Morgan Strange and Carrie Anna Lane, and Daniel Holladay Jr.; two great granddaughters, Tracie and Emily Holladay.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 11, 2010, in Union United Methodist Church at Wilson, with the Rev. Carl Ritter and the Rev. Ashley Brunson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Aubrey Johnson, Ken Holladay, Bill Holladay, Jimmy Holladay, Trey Holladay, Don Holladay, and Michael Johnson. Honorary pallbearers were Jimmy Tobias, Mike Johnson, Frank Baldwin, and Wayne Holladay.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to his caregiver, Carrie Anna Lane.

Raymond Coker - August 9th, 2010

DENMARK - Carlysle Raymond Coker Jr., 68, husband of Patsy Spigner Coker, died August 9, 2010 in Lexington Medical Center.

Born April 18, 1942 in Turbeville, he was a son of Edith Driggers Coker and the late Carlysle Raymond Coker Sr. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Denmark, a member of the Denmark Masonic Lodge 246 AFM. He was an owner and operator of Piggly Wiggly Grocery Stores.

Surviving are his wife of Denmark and his mother of Manning; two sons, Carlysle Raymond "Bubba" Coker III and wife Karin of Denmark and William Todd Coker and wife Michelle of Columbia; a daughter, Frances Teresa "Teri" Huber and husband Robbie of Denmark; three brothers, Jerry and Rick Coker of Manning, and Glenn Coker of Goose Creek; three sisters, Brenda Coker, Lois Ann Coker, and Mary Hinson, all of Manning; six grandchildren, Rob Huber, Jessica Coker, Megan Huber, Kamryn Coker, Carysle Raymond "Cash" Coker IV, and Maddie Marie Coker.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Rose Marie Tomlinson.

Funeral services were at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 11, 2010, in the First Baptist Church of Denmark with the Rev. Andy Hunter officiating. Burial was at 2:00 p.m. in Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning.

Maureen Markley Bense - August 9th, 2010

SUMMERVILLE - Maureen Markley Bense, 58, died Monday, August 9, 2010 at a Charleston hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 14, 2010 at St. Matthias Episcopal Church, Summerton, SC at 12 o’clock noon. Burial will follow in Summerton Evergreen cemetery . Mrs. Bense was born October 30, 1951 in Miami, FL, a daughter of the late William Pierce Markely and Anne Daugherty Markley. She graduated from Summerton High School, the University of South Carolina Nursing School and was a Neo-natal nurse at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Survivors include her husband, Joel Bense of Summerville; her mother, Anne Shaw of Sumter; children, Joel Thompson (Karen) of Walterboro, Rebecca Anne Amelia Main (Chris) of Ridgeville; step-children, William Bense (Tonya) of
Summerville, Peter Bense of San Jose, CA, Andrew Bense of Clemson; grandchildren, Markley Joy Main of Ridgeville, Brayton and Charlize Bense of Summerville; brothers, Carl Reader McClary of Atlanta, William David McClary of Summerton; sister, Jessica Markley Lee (Joe) of Sumter; nieces, Annie Lee of Sumter, Caroline Barnette (Will) of Mt. Pleasant, Kate McClary of Summerton, and many close friends.

Henry Burchell Rickenbaker - August 7th, 2010

SUMMERTON - Henry Burchell Rickenbaker, 86, affectionately known by his family as “Pop, ” passed into the arms of his Heavenly Father on August 7, 2010. Born on July 29, 1924, in Summerton, Henry was the son of the late Mannie Wilson Rickenbaker and Norvelle Briggs Rickenbaker. He graduated Summerton High School and attended Clemson University until he left school to enlist in the U.S. Army Air Corp answering the call of duty for his country during World War II. Serving in the European Theater as a flight engineer on B-24 bombers in the 464th Bombardment Group, his plane was shot down over Germany in February 1945.He made his way to Switzerland where he was picked up by the Swiss and kept near Oudeberg, Switzerland for more than two months. Then with assistance from the French Underground, he made his way to France from where he was returned to the United States.

Following World War II, Henry worked with his father in the family farming business. Henry later purchased the Harvin Cotton Gin in Davis Station and started his own agribusiness of farming, ginning, and warehousing. Rickenbaker Cotton Gin is the last operating cotton gin in Clarendon County.

A devoted family man, Henry always found time to serve his community. Through the years, he served in numerous capacities including: Clarendon Memorial Hospital Board, Clarendon County Airport Commission, board of trustees of Clarendon Hall, board of directors on the local and corporate levels for the National Bank of South Carolina, Chairman of ASCA, and member of the board of Santee Cooper.

A lifelong member of Saint Matthias Episcopal Church in Summerton, he served numerous terms on the vestry, including thirty years as Senior Warden. A faithful and loyal supporter of Clemson University, Henry was an IPTAY Representative for Clarendon County and scholarship donor.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Henrietta (Hennie) Tindal Rickenbaker; four children, Lela Rickenbaker Lance (Art) of Florence, Mannie Wilson (Rick) Rickenbaker, III (Carla) of Summerton, Connie Bell (Lester) of Sumter, and Henry Burchell Rickenbaker, Jr. (Julie) of Summerton; nine adoring grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Rickenbaker Middleton of Columbia. Henry was a devoted family man and delighted in the many accomplishments of his loving family.

Graveside services with full military honors were held on Tuesday, August 10, 2010, at 10 :30 A.M.at Saint Marks Episcopal Church, 6205 Camp Mac Boykin Road, Pinewood, SC 29125, with the Rev. Chad Rickenbaker (grandson) and Father David W. T. Thurlow officiating.

Pallbearers were Noel Lance, Art Lance, Lester Bell, Baker Bell, Gill Bell, and David Tindal.

William Edwin Brown - August 5th, 2010

SANTEE – William Edwin Brown, 71, husband of Beverley Ritchey Connelly Brown, passed away at his home on Thursday, August 5, 2010 following a long illness.

Born May 3, 1939, in Connersville, Indiana, he was the son of the late Arthur Edwin Brown and the late Evelyn Rose Stephen Brown Green. He was a United States Army veteran; retired from Roots Blower Company in Connersville, Indiana; a former member of the Connersville, Indiana Moose Lodge; a member of the SCMGA (S. C. Meat Goat Association), where he served as president; a member of UAW; and a member of Jerusalem United Methodist Church in Santee.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of Santee, are his stepfather, Leo M. Green of Connersville, IN; one son, William Brown (Virginia) of South Bend, IN; two daughters, Gian Bolen (Mike) of Lebanon, TN, and Ginene "Ginny" Good of Orlando, FL; two stepsons, Andrew Connelly of Memphis, TN, and Arthur Connelly of Beaufort, SC; five brothers, Daniel A. Brown (Diane) of Williamsport, PA, Roy S. Brown (Diana), David E. Brown (Cheryl), Mark E. Brown (Marcia), and Michael C. Brown, all of Connersville, IN; four grandchildren, Whitney Brown, Natalie Bolen, Monica Bolen and Drew Bolen; four stepgrandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

He was predeceased by wife Carol Keilman Brown.

A memorial service was held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at Jerusalem United Methodist Church of Santee, with the Rev. Terry Fleming officiating.

A Celebration of Life service was held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 13, 2010 in Miller-Moster-Robbins Funeral Home, followed by burial in Valley Grove cemetery in Connersville, IN.

Christine B. Johnson - August 3rd, 2010

SARDINIA – Christine Barfield Johnson, 85, widow of Robert Newell Johnson, died Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at Tuomey Healthcare System in Sumter.

Born January 22, 1925, in Newton Grove, NC, she was the daughter of the late Edgar and Roxie Porter Barfield. She was a devoted member of Sardinia Presbyterian Church, where she was active in the Womens Day Circle and Ladies Prayer Group. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post #149. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, whose Godly influence will survive for generations to come.

Surviving are four sons, Bobby Johnson of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, Kirby Johnson (Miriam) of Alcolu, James Johnson (Beverly) of Mayesville, and William Johnson (Wanda) of Manning; a daughter, Kathy Morrison (Earl) of Sardinia; twelve grandchildren, Katie Morrison Beckham, Bert Morrison, Jim Morrison, Rob Johnson, Kit Johnson Hinkle, Leah Johnson, David Johnson, Caroline Johnson, Talmadge Johnson, Hutch Johnson, Dinah Davis Johnson, and Porter Johnson; and two great grandchildren, Lucy Kate and William Beckham.

Funeral services were held at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, August 5, 2010, in Sardinia Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. John Dodd and the Rev. Dr. Gordon Reed officiating. Burial was in Sardinia-Gable cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Bert Morrison, Jim Morrison, Bill Beckham, Rob Johnson, Nathan Hinkle and Talmadge Johnson. Honorary pallbearers were Elders and Deacons of Sardinia Presbyterian Church.

John Kenneth McCord Sr. - August 3rd, 2010

MANNING - John Kenneth McCord Sr., 83, husband of Harriet Magoulas McCord, passed away on Tuesday, August 3, 2010, at his Manning residence after a prolonged illness, and in the loving presence of his family.

Born April 15, 1927 in Orangeburg, he was the son of the late Reverend Lewis Bryson and Mae Harrelson McCord. He was a graduate of Manning High School and enlisted in the United States Navy at age 17. A combat veteran of WWII, he served as a signalman third class aboard the Navy landing craft, LST 863, in the war’s Pacific Theater. He was engaged in the U.S. liberation of the Philippines in 1944, and in the decisive 1945 American amphibious assault on Okinawa. For his military service in World War II, he was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with a battle star, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the Victory Medal. After his discharge from the U.S. Navy in 1946, Mr. McCord earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Presbyterian College, and served as assistant director of the recreation department at Whitten Village in Clinton. Later, he was employed as a coach and instructor at Manning High School; and for fifteen years was a salesman with Southern Agricultural Chemical Company in Kingstree. In 1980, he co-founded an agricultural consulting firm, M&M Agricultural Consultants of Manning, and remained active in the company until his retirement.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, and was a member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church. He was a former member of the VFW and NRA. He will be remembered as an avid outdoorsman, who loved to hunt, fish and work in his garden. He was an award-winning rosarian and an avid bird watcher.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of 62 years of Manning, are two sons, Ken McCord Jr. (Charlene) of Mt. Pleasant and Shawn McCord (Renee’) of Manning; one daughter, Jeri Lindsey (Jimmy) of Conway; two sisters-in-law, Anna McCord of Columbia, and Frances McCord of Manning; four grandsons, Jay Lindsey (Rachel), John Lindsey (Jen), Will Lindsey and John Kenneth McCord III; two step granddaughters; and one great granddaughter; many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three brothers, James Bryson McCord, Charles Lewis McCord, and William Jerome McCord.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 6, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Reverend Charles C. Tyler officiating. Interment was in Manning cemetery. Pallbearers were Jimmy McCord, Toy McCord, Larry McCord, T. J. McCord, Chuck McCord and Billy McCord.

The family extends its deep appreciation to Dr. Lea B. Givens, Jennifer Gamble and Cathy McCord (Home Health), and their heartfelt gratitude to Deb Embry (Tuomey Hospice) for the care and kindness during Mr. McCord’s illness.

Martha Frances Mayo Brixhoff - July 31st, 2010

SUMMERTON – Martha Frances Mayo "Mrs. B." Brixhoff, 89, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 31, 2010, at MUSC, Charleston.

Born January 12, 1921, in Tarboro, NC, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Peyton and Edith Sires Mayo. She was married for 64 years to the late Paul Karl Brixhoff Sr. She lived in Savannah, GA from age five until 1952, where she and her husband lived until moving to Wake Forest, NC. They owned and operated the Western Auto in Wake Forest, NC for thirty-two years. In 1982, they relocated upon their retirement to the Charleston, SC area in order to be closer to their children and grandchildren. She was actively involved in her son’s business for eighteen years, made many younger friends, and became much loved for her concern and compassion for those in need. She has lived in the Lake Marion area of Summerton since 2003. She has been a member of Wake Forest Baptist Church since 1956.

She is survived by her daughter, Lynda Brixhoff Owens and her husband Bryant of Manson, NC; a son, Paul K. Brixhoff Jr. and his wife Ada of Summerton; a sister, Gladys Graham of Jacksonville, FL; three grandchildren, David Adams, Noel Brixhoff Gilman, and Randi Owens Arroyo; seven great grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Justin, Cameron, Alex, David, Kayleigh, and Felix; two nieces, Drucilla & Paula; special family members, Pamela Clark of Raleigh, NC, Patricia & Bobby Dobbins, Janet Tindal, and her faithful companion, Bo.

A memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 7, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with Pastor Carlton Weatherburn officiating.

Lillian Blackmon Barwick - July 29th, 2010

MANNING – Lillian Blackmon Barwick, 73, widow of Gene Wilton Barwick, passed away on Thursday, July 29, 2010, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.

Born June 13, 1937, in Alcolu, SC, she was the daughter of the late Worth R. and Louise Richburg Blackmon. She was a retired insurance clerk and office manager, and a member of Clarendon Baptist Church in Alcolu.

She is survived by a daughter, Kelly Jones and her husband David of Florence; a son, Todd Barwick and his wife Mandy of Alcolu; four grandchildren, Brad Johnson and his wife Rachel, Zac Jones, Whitney Barwick, and Corey Barwick and friend, Brianna Yarbrough; three great grandchildren, Corey Greene, Desmond Johnson, and Gavin Barwick; special friend and sister-in-law, Esther Thomas of Manning; and sisters-in-law, Molly Blackmon, Ruby Bryant, June Blackmon, and Lois Poston.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Worth R., Wilbur A., and William “Gene” Blackmon; and two sisters, Margaret B. Morrison and Mary Belle M. Richburg.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, August 1, 2010, in Clarendon Baptist Church, Alcolu, with the Rev. Kirk Carlisle officiating. Burial was in Trinity United Methodist Church cemetery, Alcolu.

Pallbearers were Russell Harrelson, Dan McInnis, William Locklair, Stacey McInnis, Steve Lowe, and J. Eaddy. Honorary pallbearers were the nephews.

Judy Brewer - July 27th, 2010

MANNING – Mary Julia “Judy” Brewer, 70, passed away on Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Born June 25, 1940, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late John Beniard and Eula Baggette Brewer. She was a retired family court stenographer, having worked for Judge James M. “Mac” Morris, Judge Wright Turbeville, and Judge Sep Belser. She was a member of Liberty Free Will Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class and served as church pianist.

She is survived by a brother, John B. Brewer and his wife Pauline of Manning; four sisters, Doris B. Haberkorn of Manning, Kathleen Wise of Sumter, Ruby Styron and her husband Milton of Davis, NC and Ann Morris of Manning; a sister-in-law, Marguerite Brewer of Rocky Mount, NC; thirteen nieces and nephews; twenty-five great nieces and nephews; and nine great great nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Heyward Brewer; and two brothers-in-law, Casper Haberkorn and Cecil Wise.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 31, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. David Carlson officiating, assisted by Rev. Wright Turbeville. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Nephews served as pallbearers.
