WEDGEFIELD – David Richard Barrett, 59, husband of Frances Weems Barrett, died Wednesday, October 6, 2010, at McLeod Hospital in Florence.

Born March 15, 1951, in Sumter, he was the son of the late James Frederick and Posie Roberts Barrett. He was a construction worker, and a member of Manning First Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of Wedgefield, are two sons, David Richard Barrett Jr. of Columbia, and Joseph Michael Barrett of Irmo; two daughters, Victoria Barrett Ard of Alcolu, and Elizabeth Barrett Windham of Manning; a sister, Mary Lou Barrett Hardy of Manning; and ten grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Stevie Barrett.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, October 8, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Tom Vassar officiating. Burial was in Manning cemetery.

Iris Laverne King - October 5th, 2010

MANNING - Iris Laverne King, 72, died Tuesday, October 5, 2010, in Tuomey Healthcare System.

Born Februrary 14, 1938, in Baltimore, Maryland, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Tilghman Downey and the late Emma Murphy Downey. She was of the Episcopal faith and retired from the banking industry.

She is survived by two sons, Gary King of Summerton and Greg King of Maryland; and a brother, Rue Tane Downey of Maryland.

Services were private.

Peyton Olivia Lyn Bryant - October 5th, 2010

PAXVILLE – Peyton Olivia Lyn Bryant, infant daughter of Robert Lee and Stephanie Evans Bryant, passed away on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, at Palmetto Health Richland NIC Unit in Columbia.

Peyton was born September 10, 2010, at McLeod Hospital in Florence.

Surviving in addition to her parents of Paxville are two brothers, Jared Lee Bryant and Devin Travis Bryant of the home; maternal grandparents, Al Evans of Manning, and Danny and Karen Welch of Sumter; great grandmother, Betty Welch of Sumter; paternal grandparents, Delores and Jody Griffin of Sumter; and Dean and Linda Bryant of Umatilla, FL.

Peyton was predeceased by a sister, Kaylyn McKenzie H. Bryant; and a cousin, Brooklyn MiKayla Gauthier.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 8, 2010, in Home Branch Baptist Church, Manning, with the Rev. Robert Haynes officiating. Burial was in Zoar Community cemetery in Sumter County. Justin Amerson served as pallbearer.

Cody Lee Parnell - October 3rd, 2010

MANNING – Cody Lee Parnell, 17, son of Joseph Jacob”Jay” and Vicki Lea Mitchell Parnell, ended his journey on this earth Sunday, October 3, 2010, together with his brother, Jessi James Parnell, 14.

Cody was born August 23, 1993, in Sumter, and was a Junior at Laurence Manning Academy. He loved participating in team sports including football, basketball and track. He was an avid ourdoorsmen and was forever fishing, hunting, boating, swimming, motorcycling, fourwheeling, golfing and living life to the fullest. He and his brother, Jessi, were inseparable to the end. He believed in Christ, having been baptized by brother Ron Bower, and was a member of First Church of God, Sumter. He will be sorely missed by family and friends and is awaiting our homecoming in heaven...with Jessi.

Surviving in addition to his parents of Manning are a sister, Leah Beth Daly and her husband John Jr. of Shelby, NC; paternal grandmother, Sandra H. Parnell of Manning; maternal grandparents, George & Rosalea Mitchell of Bemidji, MN; three aunts, Cheryl Harrington and her husband Ronnie of Sumter, and Pam Parnell and Laurie Parnell, both of Blythewood; an uncle, Doug Mitchell of Madison, WI; a nephew, John Luke Daly; and cousins, Carina, Camryn, Heather, Brad, Lydia, Brandon and Jenna.

He was predeceased by paternal grandfather, John Joseph Parnell.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 7, 2010, on the Laurence Manning Academy Football Field, with the Rev. Ron Bower officiating.

The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Laurence Manning Academy Gymnasium.

Jessi James Parnell - October 3rd, 2010

James Frederick McBride - September 30th, 2010

MANNING – James Frederick McBride, 78, husband of Jeanine Rhode McBride, passed away on Thursday, September 30, 2010, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Born January 12, 1932, in Cambridge, OH, he was the son of the late Frederick Allison and Vera Grabans McBride. He was a retired materials manager in electronics; a United States Navy and Marine Corps veteran; a graduate of Ohio State University; and a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church. He was a member of the Elks, American Legion and Ancient Order of Hibernians; an employee of Wyboo Golf Club; and a member of 40/8.

Surviving in addition to his wife of Manning are three sons, Frederick Allison McBride and his wife Denise of Cambridge, OH, Timothy James McBride and his wife Cathy of Fayetteville, GA, and Thomas Patrick McBride and his wife Wendy of Pickerington, OH; six grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah, Ashley, Jimmy, Jacob and Michael McBride.

A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 4, 2010, at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, 2529 Raccoon Road, Manning, with Father Samuel Oloyede officiating, followed by interment at 12:00 Noon on Monday in the Florence National cemetery.

The family received friends from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with a prayer vigil officiated by Deacon Walsh at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mary Elizabeth Rigby Osborne - September 25th, 2010

NICEVILLE, FL, formerly of MANNING - Mary Elizabeth "Fritz" Rigby Osborne, 90, widow of the late Ret. Col. USAF Thomas Fleet Osborne, who predeceased her in 1972, passed away in Ft. Walton Beach Hospital, Ft. Walton Beach, FL on Saturday, September 25, 2010.

Born August 24, 1920, in Manning, SC, she was the daughter of the late Joseph William and Mary Elizabeth Harvin Rigby. She was a Winthrop College graduate, former member of Manning United Methodist Church, and member of Myrtle Beach United Methodist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Richard Thomas Osborne of Cornelius, NC, and William Edward Osborne and his wife Patricia of Niceville, FL; two grandchildren, Colin William Osborne of Raleigh, NC, and Elizabeth Ann Osborne of Chandler, Arizona; a nephew, Samuel Allen Rigby of Bamberg, SC; and a niece, Ann Scott Rigby Altman and her husband Luke of Galivant's Ferry, SC.

A graveside service was held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 28, 2010, in the Manning cemetery, with the Rev. Randy Bowers officiating.

The family received friends from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

Merrell Brunson Jones - September 22nd, 2010

MANNING - Merrell Brunson Jones, 88, widow of George Rou Jones Sr., passed away on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at her home in Manning.

Born April 7, 1922, in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Wentworth and Mamie Blackwell Brunson. She was a graduate of Columbia College, and a faithful member of Clarendon Baptist Church in Alcolu where she served many years as a Sunday School teacher, choir member, and was on numerous committees. She was a member of the Camelia Garden Club, Retired Teachers Association, and Daughters of the American Revolution.

Surviving are a daughter, Linda J. Barkley and her husband Bill of Lexington; two sons, Dr. George R. Jones Jr. and his wife Kay, and Frank Blackwell Jones and his wife Honri, all of Manning; nine grandchildren, Laura (James) Bradford, Nancy Margaret (Bob) Harkins, F.B. Jones, Jason (Amy) Gambrell, Beth (Christian) Grattan, Kerry (Joel) Richardson, Todd (Leigh) Barkley, Ashley (Marion) DuBose, and Tori Jones; and eight great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Brunson Goldfinch; and a brother, Clarence W. Brunson Jr.

Funeral services were at 4:00 p.m. Friday, September 24, 2010, in Clarendon Baptist Church, Alcolu, with the Rev. Dr. Robert Lewis Alderman and the Rev. Kirk Carlisle officiating. Burial was in Manning cemetery. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

The family would like to thank BeBe Coker, hospice nurse, and Brenda Gamble, nursing assistant, for their dedicated and professional care. A special thanks to caregivers Joycesteen Mack, Casey Ridgeway, Martha Frierson, Cookie Pack, and Liza Mae Brown for their loving care and devotion during the last months.

Homer David Beard - November 22nd, 2010

SUMTER - Homer David Beard, 70, died Monday, November 22, 2010, in the Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia.

Born August 18, 1940 in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Ivy Dargan Beard and the late Ruby Barfield Beard. He was a United States Army 82nd Airborne veteran, retired from S.C. Electric and Gas, an avid golfer, and attended Promised Land Ministries Church.

He is survived by a son, Troy Beard of Columbia; a daughter, Janet Elaine Beard of Columbia; a granddaughter, Miranda Beard of Columbia; five sisters, Carolyn Loree Covington of Columbia, Jeanette (James) Beatson of Sumter, Frankie (David) McCabe of Manning, Barbara (Wayne) Potter of Sumter, and Lisa (Al) Osborne of Sumter; four brothers, Thurman (Linda) Beard of Sumter, Neil (Phyllis) Beard of Manning, Grant (Betsy) Beard of Summerton, and Donnie Beard of Sumter; and a special friend, Sandy McGarry.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Julie K. Beard, and a sister-in-law, Susie Gainey Beard.

A private family service was held on Wednesday.

Scott Harvin Hodge Jr. - November 20th, 2010

GREELEYVILLE - Scott Harvin Hodge Jr., 57, died Saturday, November 20, 2010, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born October 15, 1953 in Manning, he was a son of the late Scott Harvin Hodge Sr. and the late Mary Travis Eaddy Hodge. He was a member of Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church, Woodman of the World, Black Oak Hunting Club, and worked for Albany Felt for thirty years.

He is survived by a son, Scott Harvin "Chandler" Hodge III and fiance, Melanie Benavente of Greeleyville; a daughter, Brandi Michelle Hodge of Greeleyville; six grandchildren; three brothers, Tony Hodge, Donald (Diane) Hodge, and Todd (Tammy) Hodge, all of Greeleyville; and one sister, Polly (Jerry) Welch of Manning.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 24, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Revs. Jimmy Floyd, Charlie Salter, and J.P. Edwards officiating. Burial was in Deep Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Kerri Spivey, Richard Spivey, Randy Cutter, Michael Haseldon, Thomas Hodge, Timothy Hodge, Corey Hodge, and Dexter Welch.

MANNING - James F. Hodge, 73, husband of Noonie Frierson Hodge, passed away on Friday, November 19, 2010, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Born February 26, 1937, in Manning, he was the son of the late J. W. and Fannie DuBose Hodge. He was a carpenter by trade and a United States Army veteran.

Norma Cook Mullins - November 18th, 2010

MANNING – Norma Cook Mullins, 88, passed away on Thursday, November 18, 2010, at Regency Hospital in Florence.

Born October 8, 1922, in Montcoal, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Stanley H. and Dona Asbury Cook, and resided in Medina, OH, from 1953 until mid-2010. She was the beloved fiancé of Samuel L. Smiley of Manning. She was a retired quality assurance inspector; a member of Medina Church of Christ; and attended the Plaza Church of Christ in Sumter since moving to SC.

Surviving, in addition to her fiancé, are a son, Charles K. Mullins (Judith) of Litchfield Park, AZ; a daughter, Katharine E. Tisdale (David Gathings) of Manning; grandchildren, Sharon Mullins-Loeb (Tom) of Bloomfield Hills, MI, Kory J. Cartwright (Sue) of Lake City, SC, and Ryan E. Cartwright (Ann) of Lugoff, SC; great grandchildren, Jonathan McEwen (Melissa) of Summerville, SC, Cori Ann Olshavsky of Pontiac MI, Jacob Ryan Cartwright and Katelyn Ann Cartwright, both of Lugoff; four sisters, Elma Mullins of Medina, OH, Beulah Williams of Burnsville, WV, Irene Smith of Whitesville, WV, and Maxine Wharton of Fairlawn, OH; and two brothers, Stanley Cook of Medina, OH and David Cook of Sun City, AZ.

She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Manuel Murl Mullins, and beloved granddaughter, Christine Sue Mullins.

The family received friends from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday, November 22, 2010, at Waite & Son Memorial Home, 765 N. Court Street, Medina, OH 44256.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 23, 2010, in the chapel of Waite & Son Memorial Home in Medina OH, with Minister Jim Duty officiating. Burial was in Mound Hill cemetery in Seville, OH.

Gale Anthony Gilbreath - November 17th, 2010

FLORENCE, SC – Gale Anthony Gilbreath, 69, passed away on Wednesday, November 17, 2010, at McLeod Hospice House in Florence, SC.

Born November 15, 1941, in Columbus, OH, he was the son of the late Guy Slagle and Frances Mengali Gilbreath. He earned a Masters in Electrical Engineering and was instrumental in formulating WOSU Radio and TV at Ohio State University. He was a radio engineer, formerly employed at Cumulus Broadcasting.

Survivors include a daughter, Galen Barth and her husband Jonathan of Florence; a son, Maxie King and his wife Brittany of Florence; a grandson, Gage King; a brother, John Gilbreath and Latoya Fowler of Columbus, OH; special friend, Nancy Barth of Florence; a number of cousins; and numerous friends.

A memorial service was held at 12 Noon on Saturday, November 20, 2010, at Bethsaida United Methodist Church in Effingham.
