Noah Irby Cockerill Jr. - November 13th, 2010

SUMTER – Noah Irby Cockerill Jr., 83, husband of Dorothy Marie Thames Cockerill, passed away on Saturday, November 13, 2010, at his home.

Born September 2, 1927, in the Silver Community of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Noah Irby Cockerill Sr. and the late Retha Mae Hodge Cockerill. He was a retired glass blower, a United States Navy veteran of WWII, and a church member of Unity Baptist Fellowship.

Survivors, in addition to his wife of Sumter, are two sons, Glenn Allison Cockerill and his wife Tanaporn “Lynn” of Sumter, Gerald Wayne Cockerill and his wife Helen of Goldsboro, NC; three daughters, Patricia Diane Geddings and her husband Mikey of Sumter, Janie Louise Pye and her husband Tommy of Columbia, Eadie Marie McKenzie and her husband Harry of Kingstree; a brother, William M. Cockerill of Sumter; two sisters, Susie Mae Scurry and Margaret Cockerill, both of Sumter; twelve grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. He is also survived by his “second” family, the staff and customers of the Sportsman Stop ‘N’ Shop.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, November 15, 2010 in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home, 515 Miller Road, Sumter, with the Reverend Pete Mixon and the Reverend Jimmy Atkerson officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park in Sumter.

Pallbearers were Michael Geddings, Tommy Norman, Ricky Kolb, Jeffrey Thames, Eric Brown, Jimmy Giles and Woody Scurry.

Memorials may be made to Unity Baptist Fellowship, 1760 Twelve Bridges Rd., Sumter, SC 29150.

Eunice Mahoney Mathis - November 13th, 2010

MANNING – Eunice Mahoney Mathis, child of God, widow of C. Leo Mathis, passed away on Saturday, November 13, 2010, at her home in Manning.

Born March 5, 1913, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Robert M. and Mattie Beatson Mahoney. She was a graduate of Manning High School, lifelong member of First Baptist Church and the T.E.L. Sunday school class. She was best remembered for her love of God, enduring faith, and her nurturing of family and friends.

Surviving are two sons, Leo Mathis Jr. (Jeannie) of Manning, Robert G. “Bobby” Mathis (Barbara) of Manning; a daughter, Linda Lesemann (John) of Manning; six grandchildren, Robert G. “Robbie” Mathis Jr. of Lansing, Michigan, Anita Ladd (Gary) of Mt. Pleasant, Brian Calloway (Stephanie) of Simpsonville, SC, Laura L. McNair (Pierce) of Columbia, John Davis Lesemann Jr. (Juthamat) of Lemoore, CA, Leslie Capobianco (Joe) of Hartsville; six great grandchildren, Meredith Ladd, Madison Ladd, Mary Catherine McNair, Evans Davis McNair, Cammie Calloway, and Dalton Capobianco; two sisters-in-law, Beulah S. Mahoney of Manning, and Ruth Floyd of Winnsboro.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Robert Marion Mahoney, Bunyan Mahoney, George Mahoney, Daniel Mahoney, and Henry B. Mahoney; and sisters, Annie Mae Nash, Bessie Scott, and Elizabeth Reardon.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 16, 2010, in Manning First Baptist Church, with the Reverend Thomas Vassar officiating. Burial was in Manning cemetery.

Reverend Dr. John C. Doubles - November 12th, 2010

MANNING – The Reverend Dr. John Carroll Doubles, 49, passed away on Friday, November 12, 2010, at his home in Manning.

Born May 10, 1961, in Abingdon, Virginia, he was the son of Malcolm Carroll and Jacqueline McLeod Doubles. He was minister of Santee Presbyterian Church and member of Charleston-Atlantic Presbytery.

Surviving in addition to his parents of Laurinburg, NC, are a daughter, Alexandra McLeod Doubles of Hartsville; a brother, Malcolm McLeod Doubles of Troutville, VA; and a sister, Mary Blake Nickles of Anderson, SC.

A memorial service was held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, November 15, 2010 in Santee Presbyterian Church, 306 Bradford Blvd., Santee, SC 29142, with The Reverend Deck Guess officiating.

Amy Marie Calligan Dibens - November 11th, 2010

MANNING - Amy Marie Calligan Dibens, 55, passed away on Thursday, November 11, 2010, at Tuomey Healthcare System in Sumter.

Born September 9, 1955, in Jamaica, NY, she was the daughter of Anna Theresa McFarland Calligan and the late Edward J. Calligan.

Amy was employed as a clerk in the Clarendon County Treasurer's Office in Manning, and attended Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church in Manning.

Surviving in addition to her mother of Manning are three sisters, Barbara Ann Calligan Brathe and her husband Dieter of Charlotte, NC, Mary Margaret Calligan Resteghini and her husband Joseph of Manning, and Nancy Jayne Calligan Synek of South River, NJ; a brother, Edward Leo Calligan and his wife Glenda of Denver, Colorado; nieces and nephews, Stephen Brathe, Christopher Brathe, Joseph N. Resteghini, Katherine Rose Pedro, Ryan Calligan, Erin Calligan, Anna Synek and Megan Synek.

She was predeceased by a sister, Virginia Calligan Brewer.

A prayer vigil will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, November 21, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Reverend Mr. Charles Walsh officiating.

The family will receive friends following the prayer vigil until 5:00 p.m. Sunday.

Margaret G. Ferguson - November 11th, 2010

MANNING - Margaret G. Ferguson, 71, wife of Charles Francis Ferguson, passed away on Thursday, November 11, 2010, at McLeod Hospice House in Florence.

Born December 17, 1938, in Lancashire, England, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Sadie Stephenson Richardson. She was a retired facility manager in Prince Georges County, Maryland, and attended Manning United Methodist Church.

Surviving, in addition to her husband of Manning, are a daughter, Karen Stanley and her husband William of Manning; a son, Mark Ferguson and his wife Debra of Huntington, MD; two sisters, Sadie Ford and Mavis Trett, both of England; and a brother, James Richardson of England; and twin granddaughters, Kristy and Chelsea Stanley.

A memorial service was held at 4:00 p.m. Friday, December 17, 2010 in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home.

Linwood Ernest Mahoney Sr. - November 9th, 2010

MANNING - Linwood Ernest Mahoney Sr., 91, husband of the late Alice Rhodus Mahoney, passed away on Tuesday, November 9, 2010, at his home.

Born June 25, 1919, in Manning, he was the son of the late James Percy and Lula Davis Mahoney. He was a retired service station attendant, and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are two sons, Linwood E. "Ernie" Mahoney Jr. and his wife Betty, and Donald Wayne "Donnie" Mahoney and his wife Neal of Manning; a daughter, Diane Benenhaley and her husband Jeff of Manning; six grandchildren, Jeffery Benenhaley (Dawn) of Ohio, Marie Powell (Steven) of Columbia, Donald Mahoney of Manning, Alica Adams (Jason) of Irmo, Lin Mahoney (Melissa) of Manning and Lee Mahoney of Florence; and six great grandchildren, Drew Benenhaley, Jaelyn Benenhaley, Hawkins Powell, Byars Powell, McKenzie Mahoney, and Breanna Brown.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 12, 2010, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Raymond Barfield officiating. Burial was in Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Jerry Coker - November 9th, 2010

NEW ZION – Jerry W. Coker, 55, husband of Margaret Driggers Coker, died Tuesday, November 9, 2010, at Hopewell Nursing Home in Sumter.

Born August 31, 1955, in Florence, he was the son of the late Louie and Louise Powell Coker. He was a construction worker, and was of the Protestant faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife of Sumter are two daughters, Felicia Foster of Wilmington, NC and Jackie Coker of Greenwood, SC; a son, Joseph Coker of Sumter; a brother, Mitchell Coker of Alcolu; and a granddaughter, Emily Ann Foster.

A graveside service was held at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, November 11, 2010, in New Hope Christian Church cemetery at New Zion, with the Reverend Buster Coker officiating.

James Dolphus Lane - November 5th, 2010

MANNING – James Dolphus “Tootsie” Lane, 80, passed away on Friday, November 5, 2010, at Williamsburg Nursing Home in Kingstree.

Born July 2, 1930, in Kingstree, he was the son of the late Homer and Mabell Young Lane. He was a self-employed roofer who always enjoyed life to the fullest.

Surviving are a son, Steven L. (Chris) Lane of Greeleyville; two daughters, Thetis Lane (Ted) Ricks, and Karen (Larry) Osborne, both of Jacksonville, FL; a stepson, Marshall Ardis of Sumter; a sister, Virginia Way of Greeleyville; seven grandchildren, Stephen Osborne, Jessica Osborne, Christy (Brian) Nexsen, Jamie (Holly) Lane, Candace (Herbie) Blanton, Krissa (Frank) Young, and Ted Ricks; and step-granddaughter, Brittany Ardis.

A memorial service was held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, November 7, 2010, in Mount Vernon United Methodist Church in Williamsburg County.

Harry LeGrand Stewart Jr. - November 5th, 2010

MANNING – Harry Legrand Stewart Jr., 53, passed away at Clarendon Memorial Hospital on Friday, November 5, 2010.

Born October 4, 1957, in Manning, he was the son of Diane Price Stewart of Manning and the late Harry Legrand Stewart Sr. He was a mechanic, retired from Prothro Chevrolet.

Surviving, in addition to his mother of Manning, are a son, Harry Legrand Stewart III and his wife Kaleena of Manning; two grandchildren, Camara Marie Stewart and Harry Legrand Stewart IV; a brother, Ronnie Stewart and his wife Kay of Sardinia; friend and companion, Dianne Tucker of Manning; stepson, Shawn Nathan "Little Bubba" Tucker of Manning; and very special friend, Vernon "Pop" Fisher of Manning.

Graveside services were held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 8, 2010, in Price-Snyder cemetery in Manning, with the Reverend Nick Erickson officiating.

Lorea Ridgeway Campbell - November 3rd, 2010

ALCOLU - Lorea Ridgeway Campbell, 86, widow of Albert Campbell, went to be with our Lord Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at RoseCrest Retirement Community in Inman, South Carolina.

Born February 5, 1924 in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Charles Nettles and Naomi Bryant Ridgeway. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Manning.

She is survived by two daughters, Marian C. O’Shields and her husband Michael L. (Mike) of Landrum, South Carolina, and Roberta (Bert) C. and her husband Dr. William B. Rush (Billy) of Newberry, South Carolina; five grandchildren, Mickey O’Shields (Lana) of Campobello, South Carolina, Betsi O’Shields of Charlotte, North Carolina, Rebecca Rush (Rod Elkins) of Prosperity, South Carolina, Sarah Rush and Albert Campbell Rush of Charleston, South Carolina; and two great grandchildren, Mackaylan O’Shields and Rory Elkins. She is survived also by three sisters, Willowese R. Campbell (Mrs. W.L.) of Kingstree, South Carolina, Esther R. Taylor (Mrs. H.L.) of Manning, South Carolina, and Betty R. Spigner of Sumter, South Carolina.

She was pre-deceased by one daughter Gwendolyn Naomi Campbell; one grandson William B. Rush, III; three brothers, William E. Ridgeway, Charles T. Ridgeway, and Albert Ridgeway; and two sisters, Oneida R. Montjoy and Oletheia Ridgeway.

Funeral services were held at 11 AM Friday, November 5, 2010 at First Baptist Church of Manning, South Carolina, with the Reverend Chad Rickenbaker officiating. Burial was in Trinity United Methodist Church cemetery in Alcolu.

Merritt E. Gibson - October 30th, 2010

MANNING – Merritt E. Gibson, 102, widower of Helen Hutchison Gibson, passed away at his home in Manning on Saturday, October 30, 2010.

Born July 24, 1908, in Walbridge, OH, he was the son of the late John and Lille Mae Castor Gibson. He was a retired telephone repairman, and attended Manning United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a cousin, Charlie Cramer and his wife Sharon of Manning; and two nephews, Marty Hutchison of CA, and Dan Hutchison of Vancouver, Washington.

He was preceded in death by his wife; and his son, Richard M. Gibson.

Services are private. He will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Helen, at a later date in Lake Township cemetery in Millbury, OH.

William Kenneth Brown - October 29th, 2010

SUMMERTON – William Kenneth "Ken" Brown, 76, husband of Frances Belk Brown, died Friday, October 29, 2010, at his home in Summerton.

Born August 15, 1934, in Camden, he was the son of the late William J. “Buck” Brown and the late Blanche Dority Marshall. He was a graduate of Furman University in Greenville, SC, and Fruitland Bible College in Hendersonville, NC; a United States Navy veteran of the Korean War; owner of Ken Brown Transportation Inc. in Summerton; a member of Grace Christian Fellowship Church in Manning; past Master at St. David Lodge #72 in Darlington; a member of Omar Shrine Temple in Charleston; and Santee Shrine Club.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of Summerton, are a son, Kenny Brown of Camden; a sister, Barbara Powell and her husband Harry Francis of Johsonville; and two nephews.

A memorial service was held at 3:00 Monday, November 1, 2010, in Grace Christian Fellowship Church in Manning, with the Reverend Michael E. Murdoch officiating.
