ROSE ADAMS

Rose Anna Alford Adams, 88, wife of the late Cleveland Adams, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 9, 1920, in Bennettsville, daughter of the late Alexander and Lou Oliver Alford.

Funeral plans are incomplete and will be announced by Job's Mortuary, Inc.

Job's Mortuary, 312 S. Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

ROSA W. SCHWARTZ

Rosa Weinberg Schwartz, 82, wife of Ramon Schwartz Jr., died Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Dr. Milton Weinberg and Ethel Harper Weinberg.

Mrs. Schwartz was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter where she was active for many years in the Episcopal Church Women (ECW) and as a Sunday school teacher. She was a former President of the ECW Board for the Diocese of South Carolina. For numerous years, she spearheaded the pansy sales, the annual fundraiser for the ECW, and worked tirelessly with other church committees.

In 1988, she was honored at a special Sunday worship service for her years of service to the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter and presented with an original painting of the church commissioned in her honor.

Mrs. Schwartz was a graduate of Edmunds High School and Winthrop College. She was a member of the Junior Welfare League, numerous civic organizations, The Cotillion, The Trian Club and The Sumter Assembly.

Surviving are her husband of Sumter; one daughter, Barbara Burchstead and husband Harry of Sumter; three sons, Ramon Schwartz III of Sumter, Milton Schwartz and wife Caren of Sumter, and Bill Schwartz and wife Meg of Columbia; one brother, Dr. Milton Weinberg of Lake Forest, Ill.; one sister, Ethel Flynt of Kernersville, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Michael Burchstead, Matthew Burchstead, Sarah Burchstead, Hughes Schwartz, Reid Schwartz, Grier Schwartz, Maggie Schwartz and Page Schwartz.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter with the Rev. Dr. John M. Barr, the Rev. Hamilton Smith and the Rev. Charles F. Walton Jr. officiating.

Committal of the ashes will be in the Church Memorial Garden.

The family will receive friends following the memorial service and the committal of the ashes in the Parish Hall of the church.

The family is grateful to her many care givers, the staff of Tuomey Healthcare System, Tuomey Hospice and National Healthcare for their many acts of kindness.

The family is grateful for the expertise and loving care rendered by Dr. Al Jordan, Dr. Andy McFaddin and Dr. Charles White.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter Building Fund, P.O. Box 338, Sumter, SC 29150 or to the Solomons Home for the Aged, 620 N. Guignard Drive, Sumter, SC 29150 or to a charity of one's choice.

JULIUS M. DesCHAMPS

MAYESVILLE -- Julius Maurice DesChamps, 28, husband of Shelia Perry DesChamps, entered eternal rest on Dec. 27, 2008, at Kershaw County Medical Center.

Born Aug. 6, 1980, he was a son of Julius DesChamps and Emma Abrams Moore.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home of his mother, 4045 4th St., Mayesville, and the home of his aunt, Connie DesChamps Smiling, 6915 Panola Road, Pinewood.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Community Funeral Home.

M. RICHARD THORPE

M. Richard Thorpe, 83, beloved husband of 60 years to Ruth Brown Thorpe, passed away Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, after an extended illness.

Born in Zanesville, Ohio, he was a son of Charles Raymond and Lura Wagner Thorpe. He was raised in Spartanburg. Mr. Thorpe served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in Italy. Mr. Thorpe was a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church, had served as a deacon at Lake Marion Baptist Church, and taught Sunday school at Southside Baptist Church in Spartanburg. He worked for several national companies and was retired from Cox Wood Preserving in Orangeburg, where he was a sales manager.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Renee Infinger and her husband, Ron, of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Richard Thorpe and his wife, Judy, of Palm City, Fla.; four grandchildren, Zach Infinger of Winston-Salem, N.C., Allison Infinger of Columbia, Alex Thorpe and Jenna Thorpe of Palm City, Fla.; and a nephew, Gary Griffith of Spartanburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Clay Smith and the Rev. Talmadge Infinger officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Bullock Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Alice Drive Baptist Church, 1305 Loring Mill Road, Sumter, SC 29150; the American Heart Association, Memorial and Tributes, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216; the American Diabetes Association, 2711 Middleburg Drive, Columbia, SC 29204; or to a charity of one's choice.

The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter for the arrangements.

JOHN A. SMITH Sr.

John (Pokey) Alec Smith Sr., 93, widower of Rachel Johnson Smith, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Maynard C. Smith and Lilly DuRant Smith.

Mr. Smith was twice married , first to the late Marion Newman Smith then to the late Rachel Johnson Smith.

Mr. Smith was a member of Southside Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Men's Sunday school teacher. He was retired from Williams Furniture Co. after 30 years of service and retired from Carolina Furniture Co. after 12 years of service.

In his youth, he played on the Manning baseball team, of which he was the last surviving player. His greatest loves were The Lord, his family, fishing and baseball.

Surviving are one son, John A. Smith Jr. of Sumter; one daughter, Frances Marion Funderburk of Greenville; one stepson, Allen Johnson of Sumter; three stepdaughters, Annette Alexander and Beverly Johnson, both of Sumter and Kathy DuBose of Summerton; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Maynard C. Smith, a sister, Isabelle McElveen, a stepson, Jimmy Johnson and a grandson, John Funderburk.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Atkinson and the Rev. Jim Johnson officiating.

Burial will follow in the Zoar United Methodist Church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Douglas Mixon, Tom Bouchette, Adrian Ingram, Ray Lyles, Sebastian Brown, Charles McAlister, Jim Glass and Bill Coleman.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Monday at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 1375 Britton Road

MYRTLE BEACH -- Annie M. Cittrich, age 83, widow of Emil W. Cittrich Jr., died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at Grand Strand Medical Center.

FRANCIS P. BRADFORD III

KINGSTREE -- Francis Pelham "Pel" Bradford III, 57, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at his residence.

Mr. Bradford was born Oct. 4, 1951, in Kingstree, a son of the late Francis Pelham Bradford Jr. and Nell McGill Bradford. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School and attended Spartanburg Methodist College. He retired in 2003 as a captain after 29 years of service with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement. Mr. Bradford was a member of Kingstree United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his daughter, Rebecca Bradford of Kingstree; his son, Francis Pelham Bradford IV of Kingstree; and his sister, Mary Louise Bradford of Anderson.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Kingstree United Methodist Church with burial in Cedar Swamp United Methodist Church cemetery.

The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Williamsburg Funeral Home.

ROSE ANNA A. ADAMS

Rose Anna A. Adams, 88, widow of Cleveland Bishop Adams, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.

She was born in Bennettsville on Sept. 9, 1920, a daughter of the late Alexander and Lou Oliver Alford. Mrs. Adams was educated in the public schools of Marlboro County. At an early age, she gave her life to Jesus Christ and became an active member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. She served faithfully as a deaconess, president of the pastor's aide ministry, an usher and missionary. Mrs. Adams was known for her generous heart and loving spirit.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory: a son, John (Maritza) Adams; five nephews, Wade Alford, Charles (Geraldine) Alford, Tyson (Gladys) Alford, Grover (Ann) Adams and Jerry Alford; four nieces, Bertha Adams, Doris (the Rev. Dr. William S.) Randolph, Maggie Kelly and Sandra Jenkins; three grandsons, James (Tisha) Adams, Jeff (Jody) Adams and Rafael Espinosa; two great-grandsons; grandnieces; grandnephews; and a host of friends.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Phillip.

Viewing will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary Inc.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Bennettsville, with the Rev. Earl Platt officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday for viewing until the hour of service.

Job's Mortuary Inc., 312 S. Main St., Sumter, is in charge of arrangements.

MARY B. GERRALD

MANNING – Mary Camille Bagnal Gerrald, 59, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at her home.

Born Jan. 9, 1949, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late George McQueen and Mary Patricia Hodge Bagnal. She was an interior designer, a member of Grace Christian Fellowship Church, and was affiliated with many Christian groups.

Surviving are two aunts, Camille Hodge Thrailkill of Simpsonville and Margie Bagnal of Manning; and many first cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. Burial will follow in Union United Methodist Church cemetery at Wilson.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Stephens Funeral Home.

EDITH D. ROBINSON

Edith D. Robinson, 78, wife of Thomas Robinson, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter County on Nov. 13, 1931, she was a daughter of the late James and Rebecca Bradford Grant.

The family will receive friends at the home of Edith Watkins, 422 Loring Place, Sumter.
